We booked here for a 2-night day whilst visiting a friend near-by. We had a garden facing room with a lovely view and enjoyed watching the rabbits running in the meadow next door. Our room was comfortable and the bed was very good with both of us getting a good night’s sleep. Our host Sarah was lovely and very welcoming. Breakfast was excellent - both cooked as well as cereals, juices, yogurts etc. Service was very good and we appreciated the fact that we didn’t have to wait a long time for our food. We recommend this place highly and will return again. Thank you Sarah. Andy & Prim
The Ancient Gatehouse & Rugantino Restaurant

Booked into the Ancient Gatehouse in Sept 2023 for one night. Communication before arriving was very good. The hotel itself if very old and a most beautiful building. I have seen some reviews commenting about the smell and the stairs etc, which is rather ridiculous. The building is about 500 years old! This only adds to the charm. Views from the back of the hotel are stunning as it looks directly towards Wells cathedral. I forget her name, but the manageress was most helpful and very friendly. Unfortunately the restaurant was closed when we stayed so we are looking forward to eating there when we return in a few months time. If you don't like old buildings and creaky stairs then stay in a Premier Inn. We loved it, hence our return for 2 nights soon which we are very much looking forward to in a bigger room.

My friend and I booked the function room for a very special occasion...........Our 55 Years of Friendship and joint Birthday celebration. We booked 6 hotel rooms, the function room and Top buffet for 55 guests and the bar. The evening started well but when the buffet was put out I felt the standard was very poor, and they couldn't even put a tablecloth on the table. At Midnight we were told to vacate the room and go to the bar downstairs and at 1am told to put our drinks into plastic cups and go out in the garden and at 1.15am TOLD to go to bed. We went upstairs reluctantly as we were paying guests and my 41 year old Son who had traveled from Dublin to perform a Magic show (He is a professional Magician) and after entertaining the bar staff was TOLD to go to bed also and was told by the manager that if he didn't go then he would be asked to leave the hotel. In the morning we all came down for breakfast to find warm food, poorly presented, missing items that arrived after we had finished (hash browns) and waiting too long for it to arrive. My overall experience was very disappointing, the attitude of the Manager was very Bad and needless to say we will NOT be frequenting the White Heart Hotel in Wells ever again.
