Wat Pariwas Ratchasongkhram Phra Ram 3 Soi 30, Bangkok Wat Pariwas Ratchasongkhram is located on the bank of the Chao Phraya River on the Phra Nakhon side and Phra Ram 3 Road. It was originally called “Wat Pariwas”. In the past, it might have been just a small monastery or temple. It was built by wealthy people in the past who valued temple construction. It is estimated that it was built around the end of the Ayutthaya period to the beginning of the Rattanakosin period. Later, during the reigns of King Rama II and III, there is evidence that Krommuen Sakphonsena built a temple on the west bank of Khlong Lat Luang with Phraya Phetphichai (Ket). From the evidence, it appears that his ancestors were the master craftsmen who passed it on. Phraya Phetphichai was the head of the construction of Phra Nakhon Khuen Khan (Phra Pradaeng) and the temple there, which became well-known. When the temple was completed, it was given the name “Wat Phaichinphonsep” (Wang Na). Phraya Phetphichai was a great believer in Buddhism and wanted to build a temple as a memorial, so he asked for permission to build another temple opposite. Wat Phaichin was granted the name “Wat Phrotket Chettharam” (Wang Luang). Both temples were royal temples. In the construction of both temples, there was another important chief, Phraya Ratchasongkhram (That), who was another person who was skilled in construction and designing palace temples and had great faith in Buddhism. When the two of them, Phraya Phetphichai (Ket) and Phraya Ratchasongkhram (That), worked together to build Wat Phaichinphonsep and Wat Phrotket Chettharam, which were located on the riverbank, they saw that there was another temple on the opposite bank of Wat Phrotket Chettharam, which was in a very dilapidated condition. They therefore renovated it until it was beautiful and named it Wat Pariwas Ratchasongkhram, following his title at the end of the temple’s name. The temple’s full name was Wat Pariwas Ratchasongkhram. People who came to visit the annual festival would always get into fights. Luang Pho Wong therefore cut off the ending of the name “Ratchasongkhram”, leaving only the word “Wat Pariwas”, which was strange because after cutting off the word “Ratchasongkhram”, there were fewer and fewer fights. At present, the original sign of Wat Pariwas has been renovated and is attached to the riverside. There is another sign of Wat Pariwas on the temple arch on Phra Ram 3 Road. At present, Wat Pariwas has many famous tourist attractions within the temple, such as the Benjarong stucco church, which is a contemporary international art work consisting of images of gods, angels, hermits, giants, demons, animals, and important characters from famous epics such as Ramakien, Three Kingdoms, Dragon Ball, cowboys, Vikings, King Arthur, Pharaohs, samurai, and Native Americans.
