Futsukaichi Onsen, 1300-Year-Old Hot Springs

Futsukaichi Onsen, nestled in Chikushino City, Fukuoka, boasts a rich heritage dating back over 1300 years. Once known by various names like "Suita no yu," "Yakushi onsen," and "Musashi onsen," it was officially named Futsukaichi Onsen in 1950. Renowned as the sole hot spring in Fukuoka for centuries, it captured the essence of liveliness in a haiku by the esteemed writer Soseki Natsume. Today, while it may not be the largest hot spring town, Futsukaichi Onsen remains a beloved tourist destination. Visitors are drawn to nearby attractions like the Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, celebrated for its association with learning, the historic Buzo-ji Temple at the mountain's base, and the Kyushu National Museum. The area is also noted for its high-end ryokans, which have hosted many cultured and notable guests. The hot spring's water is an alkaline simple thermal radioactive spring, reputed for its therapeutic effects on neuralgia and skin diseases, adding to the allure of this historically rich and culturally significant destination. We hopped on the JR train and got off at Futsukaichi Station. After enjoying a brief 10-minute walk, we were greeted by two public bathhouses right next to each other. The experience is quite affordable 200-300 Yen (2-3$) After the bath, you feel really good. Your body feels loose and free, like all the tightness has gone away. (Be careful, the water is really hot!
