Winding Along the Dragon’s Spine: A Breathtaking Hike in Hong Kong

#favouriteitinerary #travelanywhere Our first hike in Hong Kong had to be an unforgettable experience, so we set our sights on one of the city’s most renowned trails—Dragon’s Back. This 8.5km ridge hike, winding through Shek O Country Park and culminating at the shores of Big Wave Bay, promised breathtaking coastal vistas, lush greenery, and a rewarding challenge. The adventure began at Shau Kei Wan MTR Station, where we hopped on the No. 9 minibus for a scenic 30-minute ride to To Tei Wan, the gateway to Dragon’s Back. As we stepped onto the trail, a dense canopy of trees enveloped us, the crisp morning air carrying the gentle hum of nature. The path started off easy, a gradual ascent through tranquil woodlands, but as we gained elevation, the landscape transformed, revealing sweeping panoramas of the coastline. The real test of endurance came as we tackled the ascent to Shek O Peak, standing 284 meters above sea level. The climb, though strenuous, was punctuated by moments of awe. Each step brought us closer to a vantage point unlike any other, and as we reached the Dragon’s Back Viewing Point, the effort instantly felt worthwhile. From the ridge, the views were nothing short of spectacular. To the south, the Shek O Peninsula stretched gracefully into the sea, flanked by the rugged D’Aguilar Peak. Below us, the golden sands of Shek O Beach glistened under the sun, while to the west, the vast expanse of Tai Tam Bay shimmered like a painter’s masterpiece. The undulating ridgeline truly resembled the back of a mythical dragon, snaking its way toward the horizon. As we continued along the crest, each viewpoint offered a fresh perspective of Hong Kong’s unparalleled natural beauty. The cool mountain breeze was invigorating, and despite the weekend crowd, the atmosphere remained peaceful. At the final viewing area, a rustic wooden bench awaited—ideal for catching our breath and capturing the moment. The descent was a welcome change of pace, leading us through dense foliage before gradually easing into open terrain. As the sound of crashing waves grew louder, the trail unveiled its final surprise—Big Wave Bay. The sight of surfers riding the rolling tides, the salty sea breeze on our skin, and the soft sand beneath our feet made for the perfect reward after an exhilarating trek. For our first-ever hike in Hong Kong, Dragon’s Back exceeded all expectations. It was a journey of challenge and discovery, where every ascent was met with a view that took our breath away. #citydaytours #travel #couplestrip #beachlife #naturalwonders #thingstodo #seascapes #myitinerary #chinatrip

Dragon's Back

We are traveling because we need it. This was our second day in Hong Kong and still haven’t decided yet where to go though we already have an itinerary. Thanks to Justelle for sharing his Hong Kong quick escapade (super budget-friendly literally!). Public transportation in Hong Kong is superb! HOW TO GET DRAGON'S BACK 1. From TST Station ride MTR bound to Central (Red Lane) and then drop to Admiralty Station. 2. From Admiralty Station connect to Chai Wan (Blue lane - 4.5 HKD) and then drop at Shaw Kei Wan Station and follow Exit A3.  3. Take bus 9 at Shau Kei Wan Bus Terminal to To Tei Wan, Shek O Road. (Jump off) I brought an extra shirt and swimwear because based on my research Stanley Beach is near Shek O Road. But due to cold weather, we decided to go home instead. The driver will notify you when you are already in the jump-off area. Travel time from Shau Kei Wan to Shek O Road is about 30 minutes.  You can visit Stanley Beach after your hike at least to refresh there. In our scenario, we weren't able to visit the beach since it's already late, and also the temperature in Hong Kong dropped to 14'c. (Please refrain from eating or drinking in any public transportation (bus, ferry, and train) unless you want to pay their fine. Eating and drinking in any public transportation are strictly prohibited.) #dragonsback #hongkong #hongkongmountain  #seasidephotoguide#naturalwonders
