Stronghold in Kalisz

The Kalisz stronghold is one of the most important places related to the beginnings of the Polish state. It was built in the 1960s on a sandy island surrounded by the waters of Prosna. According to some researchers, it was from Kalisz that the Piast dynasty began its military conquest of towns located in today's Greater Poland. Early medieval Kalisz experienced its greatest flourishing during the reign of Prince Mieszko III the Old, who founded a Romanesque collegiate church and established a mint here. The Kalisz stronghold also became the burial place of Mieszko the Old. It was during the reign of this ruler that Kalisz, along with Poznań and Gniezno, became one of the three main towns in Greater Poland. The end of the stronghold took place in the 13th century, when the Silesian prince Henry the Bearded conquered the stronghold and moved Kalisz to the right side of Prosna.
