Wat Mahathat, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya

Wat Mahathat, located in Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, is one of the ancient sites within the Ayutthaya Historical Park. It is situated in the central area of Ayutthaya Island, in the Tha Wasukri Subdistrict, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya District. This temple held great significance during the Ayutthaya period as it housed the relics of the Buddha and served as the residence of the Supreme Patriarch of the Kamavasi sect. The temple was continuously constructed and maintained until it was destroyed and left in ruins after the second fall of Ayutthaya. Wat Mahathat is considered one of Thailand's 'Unseen' attractions, especially known for the iconic landmark of a Buddha head entwined in the roots of a large Bodhi tree. This Buddha head, an example of Ayutthaya-era art, exudes a mystical and captivating beauty. Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya is only 75 kilometers from Bangkok, making it very accessible.
