China has a history of cultivating magnolias for over 2500 years. In the late 18th century, magnolias were introduced from China to European countries such as the UK and France, where they became quite popular. Between 1820 and 1840, horticulturist Bodin hybridized white magnolias with purple magnolias to create 17 different colored cultivars, which were the first artificially hybridized magnolia species. These were later reintroduced to China. Botanists have since developed many new varieties, which are widely cultivated in various regions. In addition to white magnolias, Shanghai also grows other magnolia species such as Yulan magnolia, Erqiao magnolia, Hongyun magnolia, Feihuang magnolia, purple magnolia, and star magnolia. The white magnolia flowers are pure white like jade, with each bloom facing upwards.
