The Independence Monument

#getgoing2025 The Independence Monument is a historical landmark located within Maha Bandula Park in Kyauktada Township, Yangon. The foundation stone of the Independence Monument was laid at 8:00 AM on January 4, 1948, and it was officially opened on November 26, 1950. The monument is 150 feet tall and is surrounded by five smaller pillars. The Declaration of Independence is inscribed around the base of the monument. The secretary of the Independence Monument Construction Committee was Thiri Pyanchi U Than Sein, a Constituent Assembly Member of Parliament and Parliamentary Secretary from the Botataung constituency in Yangon. The monument was designed by engineer U Ohn Kyaing (author of the Myanmar Calendar Research book), and the construction was overseen by architect Sithu U Tin.
