Dongsheng House

Dongshengwei is located in Laowei Village, Zhengang Township, 20 kilometers south of Anyuan County. It was built by local tycoon Chen Langting in the 22nd year of Daoguang in the Qing Dynasty (1842) and completed in the 7th year of Tongzhi (1868). Dongshengwei is a typical representative of walled houses in southern Jiangxi. Its exterior walls are made of bricks, the indoor and outdoor floors are all paved with pebbles, and the solid gun tower is unique in construction. It is the only Hakka walled house and is an indispensable and important material for studying the types of walled houses in southern Jiangxi.

Dongshengwei is rectangular and faces east and west. It consists of a courtyard and a gatehouse, with a total area of ​​about 9,270 square meters. The courtyard is composed of four floors on the front, three floors on the east, south and north sides, and four corner turrets. The 7-hole gate is lined up on the front, and the middle gate is inlaid with brick carvings of "Dongshengwei" in three regular characters. The first and second floors are inlaid with stone dou windows. The outer wall is 1.3 meters thick. The "gold wrapped silver" wall method is adopted. The outer skin is built with blue bricks, and the inner skin is built with earth bricks. The top floor is built to form a passage around the whole enclosure, commonly known as "Zou Ma Lou". The outer wall of the courtyard and the turret are all built with blue bricks in a hard mountain form. There are 199 two-story earth brick buildings in the enclosure, with three halls as the central axis, forming a grand building group of "nine wells and eighteen halls". The hall is gorgeously built, with a raised beam roof frame, and the brackets, screens, and wooden windows are all finely carved with dragons and phoenixes, animals, flowers, and historical story characters. The outer gate is a brick-built, four-pillar, three-room, three-story archway-style gatehouse with the words "The Scenery Is Always New" written in regular script on the door lintel.
