What Furong Ancient Town actually is

Furong Ancient Town, China sits in Yongshun County, Xiangxi, Hunan. Its old name is Wangcun, a Youshui river port that moved timber, salt and tea toward Dongting Lake. For 818 years the Peng clan ruled here, 28 generations of Tusi governors bound by a 940 AD treaty carved into bronze.

Xie Jin's 1986 film Hibiscus Town used the village as its set. Liu Xiaoqing and Jiang Wen became stars, and Wangcun slowly became Furong Town, then Furong Ancient Town. Three to five hours covers the streets. Sleep over for the lights.

The waterfall is 60 m high and 40 m wide, with a stone path behind it. Wuli Slab Street is 2.5 km of bluestone.

Visa-free entry for Malaysians

The China-Malaysia mutual visa exemption has run since 17 July 2025 and lasts to July 2030. You get 30 days per entry and 90 days in any 180, more than a Hunan loop needs. Bring a passport valid for six months, a return ticket and a hotel address.

No permit is needed for Xiangxi. Hunan is an ordinary province and Furong is not a border zone. Fill the arrival card online within 72 hours of landing at s.nia.gov.cn.

When to go: month by month

Yongshun gets 1,366 mm of rain a year, 83% of it between April and October. That rain is why the waterfall looks like the photos; in the dry months you get a thinner curtain.

Go late April to May, or September to early October. Avoid Golden Week and Lunar New Year.

Summer is hot, and winter rooms often have only an air-conditioner and a thick quilt.

Tickets, passport entry and the release window

The gate price is ¥108. Book on Trip.com and it falls to about ¥98, roughly RM60 at RM0.61 to the yuan. The ticket lasts three days with re-entry.

Your passport is the ticket, and there is no paper stub. The booking name and number must match the document you carry, and the gate reads the passport itself, not a phone photo. Staff check again at the waterfall trail and at Tuwang Palace.

Children under 1.3 m and visitors 65 and over enter free; the 60 to 64 bracket pays half. Hours run 08:00 to midnight, lights come on near 19:30, and the last useful entry is about 21:00.

Furong has no lottery and no fixed release hour; e-tickets sell continuously, same-day included. The real deadline is China Railway, which opens sales 15 days ahead.

Getting there from Malaysia and by high-speed train

Fly into Changsha Huanghua (CSX) on AirAsia X, Batik Air or China Southern; the nonstop takes about 4 hours 50 minutes, and one-way fares start near RM462.

The airport maglev costs ¥20 and reaches Changsha South in about 20 minutes. Changsha South to Furongzhen is 297 km and 2 hours 41 minutes, with about six direct trains a day, first at 09:07, last at 18:45, from RM121.59.

The easier route is via Zhangjiajie West: 23 minutes, 11 trains a day, first at 07:28 and last at 19:20, from RM20.37. Check the Zhangjiajie to Furong Town timetable before you fix your dates.

The station is 7 km from the old town; taxis charge ¥15 to ¥30, about RM9 to RM18. Arrive after dark and confirm your inn will meet the car.

Book High-Speed Rail to Kunming

The waterfall night view: timing, route and the wet bit

The Furong Ancient Town waterfall night view runs from about 19:30 to 22:30. The best half hour is 19:30 to 20:00, when the sky still has blue and the water reads white instead of neon.

Start at the East Gate and walk down Wuli Slab Street. Tuwang Bridge gives you red lanterns, the waterfall behind and the river carrying both. Then the platform, then the path behind the curtain.

That path is the highlight and the hazard. Spray soaks you in seconds, the steps are slick and the handrail is wet. Wear grip, not sandals, and bag the phone. Allow two hours.

Tripods work on weekdays and fail on Saturdays. Come back after 21:30 for the best Furong Ancient Town night photos, when the coaches have gone.

What to see in the old town by day

Wuli Slab Street runs 2.5 km past stilt houses, dye workshops and shops selling Tujia brocade. Number 113 is the Liu Xiaoqing rice tofu shop, at ¥10 a bowl. Eat it outside.

The Xiangxi Folk Customs Museum holds the Xizhou Bronze Pillar. Cast in 940 AD, it stands 4 m tall, weighs 2,500 kg, and carries more than 2,000 characters of the treaty that gave the Peng clan eight centuries of rule.

Tuwang Palace sits above the waterfall and was the family's riverside residence. The view back over the roofs is better than any paid viewing deck. Baishou Hall has a free show at 15:00.

Where to stay: waterfall view or gate-side inn

Inside the gate you wake above the water but drag your suitcase up stone steps. Outside, you get flat roads, cheaper rooms and a quiet night, but re-enter through the ticket check.

Waterfall-view rooms run RM300 to RM550 a night. Gate-side hotels start near RM131 and reach RM250 for a proper bathroom and heating. Book four weeks ahead.

The in-town inns sit inside the ticketed zone, so a midnight arrival leaves you outside a closed gate. Send the host your train number and ask for station pickup.

Book inside for one night when the night view is the whole point of your trip. Book outside with older parents, a car, or a late train.

Halal food and prayer in Furong

Xiangxi is not Xi'an: no Muslim quarter, no mosque open to visitors, no surau sign on the main street. Furong has one halal beef noodle shop, a Lanzhou-style kitchen registered as Halali (哈俩里), where a bowl costs RM5 to RM10.

Everything else is Tujia cooking, and pork fat turns up in dishes that look vegetarian. Rice tofu is the trap: the curd is rice, but the sauces are not halal.

Eat a solid meal in Zhangjiajie before boarding; the Damashige kitchen near the Tianmen Mountain cable station is reliable, and Furong is 23 minutes away.

For prayer, use your room: ask for a quiet corner and check the qibla with an app. Guesthouse breakfasts are not halal, so bring bread or noodles.

Paying with Malaysian cards and apps

Alipay and WeChat Pay accept foreign Visa and Mastercard. Payments up to ¥200 are free; anything above attracts 3% on the full amount. Link the card before you fly.

Touch 'n Go eWallet works through Alipay+ at merchant QR codes. Set the country to Mainland China inside the Pay screen, complete eKYC in Malaysia, and let the cashier scan your code. The charge lands in ringgit, with a small spread.

Carry cash for the old town, where stalls prefer ¥10 and ¥20 notes. Install Trip.com, DiDi and Amap, and sort an eSIM before departure, because WhatsApp and Instagram are blocked.
