✈️ Understanding Transit vs Entry into Hong Kong

Hong Kong Airport Expansion Will Yield Early Advantages | Aviation ...
When transiting through Hong Kong, there are two main scenarios, and knowing the difference is important.
1️⃣ Air-side Transit (Staying Inside the Airport)
This applies when:
- You do not pass immigration
- You stay within the international transit area
- Your luggage is checked through to your final destination
Key points:
- No Hong Kong visa required
- Suitable for short layovers
- Ideal if flights are on the same ticket
⏱ Recommended minimum connection time:
- 1.5–2 hours (single ticket, through-checked baggage)
- 3–4 hours (separate tickets or different airlines)
2️⃣ Landside Transit (Entering Hong Kong)
This applies when:
- You pass immigration and officially enter Hong Kong
- You plan to explore the city, stay overnight, or collect luggage
🇲🇾 Good news for Malaysians
Malaysian passport holders enjoy visa-free entry to Hong Kong for up to 90 days, making it easy to leave the airport during long layovers.
⏱ Recommended layover time:
- Minimum 6 hours – quick city visit
- 8–12 hours – comfortable sightseeing
- 12–18 hours – near full-day experience
✅ Step-by-Step Transit Process at Hong Kong Airport
If You Already Have a Boarding Pass
- Arrive at HKG
- Follow “Transfer” signs
- Go through security screening
- Proceed to your departure gate
If You Do NOT Have a Boarding Pass
- Arrive at HKG
- Follow signs to the Transfer Counter
- Collect your boarding pass
- Clear security screening
- Proceed to your gate
💡 Hong Kong Airport has clear signage and staff assistance, making transfers easy even for first-time travellers.
⏳ How Much Time Do You Really Need?

Staying Inside the Airport
Hong Kong Airport is extremely efficient.
- 1.5–2 hours: Safe for same-ticket connections
- 3–4 hours: Safer for separate tickets or airline changes
Leaving the Airport to Explore
If you plan to enter the city, always buffer extra time.
Time breakdown:
Activity | Estimated Time |
|---|---|
Immigration & exit | 15–45 min |
Airport Express to Central | ~24 min |
Sightseeing / meals | 2–6 hours |
Return to airport | ~24 min |
Security & exit immigration | 30–60 min |
👉 Always aim to return to the airport at least 2.5–3 hours before your next flight.

Semuanya hebat, kelajuannya kira-kira 80 km/j. Perjalanan mengambil masa kira-kira sejam. Saya mengesyorkannya!

Sangat mudah. Hanya gunakan kod QR dan imbas. Sila ambil perhatian bahawa anda perlu turun dari bas dua kali untuk melalui imigresen ** kemudian imigresen China. Pastikan e-tiket anda sentiasa tersedia kerana ia perlu diimbas setiap kali anda menaiki/kembali menaiki bas. Jumlah perjalanan adalah sekitar 2.5-3 jam.
🚆 Getting from Airport to City Centre
The Airport Express is the fastest and most reliable option.
- Airport → Central: ~24 minutes
- Frequent departures
- Spacious for luggage
- Easy payment via Octopus Card or QR tickets
🛂 Do Malaysians Need a Visa for Hong Kong Transit?
- Air-side transit only: ❌ No visa needed
- Entering Hong Kong: ✅ Visa-free for Malaysians
- Collecting luggage: Requires entering Hong Kong
⚠️ If your luggage is not checked through, you must clear immigration to retrieve it.
🧳 What If Your Luggage Is Not Checked Through?
This often happens with separate tickets or different airlines.
What to do:
- Clear immigration
- Proceed to baggage claim
- Collect luggage
- Re-check baggage at departure counter
- Pass security and immigration again
⏱ Allow 45–90 minutes extra for this process.
💡 Hong Kong Airport also offers luggage storage, useful if you want to explore briefly without carrying bags.

This time I went to Hong Kong Disneyland to play, the overall experience was great! The dynamic line planning is perfect, the waiting time for the amusement facilities is relatively friendly, and it is very suitable for parents, couples and friends to travel together. The park environment is clean and tidy, the staff are very enthusiastic and patient, and the service quality is impressive. Each theme park is full of details and Disney atmosphere, and there are many photo attractions, which are very attractive no matter day or night. The fireworks and light show on the press are even more exciting. It is definitely worth staying and enjoying. It is a journey full of joy and memories. I will definitely visit again if I have the opportunity in the future!

Ocean Park is really Hong Kong's most iconic "mountain and sea amusement park", and everyone who has been to say that it is a treasure place that combines invincible sea views, cute animals and exciting facilities. Whether you are a parent-child tour, a couple date or a friend group, you can find your own happiness. · 🚠 Climbing Cable Car: The soul project connecting the mountain to the mountain overlooks the magnificent scenery of Deep Water Bay. In the evening, the sunset sea view is even more beautiful. If you are afraid of height, you can change to the ocean train to go up the mountain. · 🌊 Ocean Wonder: The top aquarium in the park. The giant curved glass wall is like a submarine tunnel, and thousands of fish swim overhead, which is very dreamy. · 🎢 Dynamic Express: The seaside roller coaster that stimulates the party! The track is attached to the cliff, and you can feel the sense of high speed and weightlessness when you dive. It is recommended to rush in the first hour of the park. · 🪼 Jellyfish kaleidoscope: recognized dream punch point! The purple blue jellyfish with light and shadow transformation, as if entering the galaxy starry sky, super suitable for slow motion movies. ·🐼 Giant Panda Tour: You can see the cute giant panda with your own eyes. The panda hall here is very popular and is the favorite of friends of all sizes. · 🎡 Period limited activities: in 2026, there will be a "Sanliju Star" joint event, as well as a "Nostalgic Music Party" and Halloween event in the water park. 🍽️ Food recommendation · Hailongwang Restaurant: The landscape restaurant with the largest aquarium in Hong Kong can enjoy Chinese food while enjoying the fish. · Bay Restaurant: Seafood buffet, steamed lobster, snow crab feet, etc. · Ice Pot Restaurant: The main restaurant is a unique experience of dining with penguins. · Panda ice room: Hong Kong-style snacks such as pineapple oil and milk tea are provided, and the shape is cute and suitable for taking pictures. · Park snacks: Hong Kong-style food vendors such as fish eggs and egg cubs are distributed throughout the park, and can replenish energy at any time. 🚇 Transportation Information· MTR: Take the Nangang Island Line to the "Ocean Park Station" directly to the main entrance. Or transfer from Exit B of Admiralty Station to Bus No. 629. · Open time: generally 10:00 - 18:00 ( may be closed on Tuesday). It is recommended to queue at the door half an hour early to enter the park. 💡 Practical Tips· Tickets: Adults about HKD 480, children (3-11 years old) about HKD 240. It is recommended to buy tickets on the platform in advance to enjoy a discount. · Time-saving route: First take the "Ocean Train" to the top of the mountain to play facilities, avoid the crowds in the queue, and then take the "Cable Car" to go down the mountain in the afternoon to visit the exhibition hall. Dress: Be sure to wear comfortable sneakers, the park is very large, and you have to walk a lot of roads. · Sun protection: Hong Kong has strong sunlight, and sun protection products must be prepared. Whether you want to seek stimulation, get close to animals or just want to relax with the sea view, this place can satisfy you! 🎢🌊🐼

This is my go-to hotel whenever I'm in Hong Kong. The location is absolutely unbeatable – it's right above Harbour City, so you have endless options for dining, shopping, and entertainment. Plus, there's a direct walkway from the back entrance to the Star Ferry, making it super convenient to get to Central. This was my third stay in six months, and I always feel right at home. I arrived late at night, and the front desk staff, Aaron Xu, thoughtfully asked if I had a power adapter. When I said no, he immediately arranged for one to be sent to my room. It was also lovely to see the Chinese flag pin on his uniform. Highly recommend, I'll definitely be staying here again!DariRUB 10,125

The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful, and the location is absolutely unbeatable. The room was also spacious and the bed was very comfortable. The Cordis Hong Kong is a fantastic hotel with modern facilities and exceptionally clean, dry rooms. Given Hong Kong's notoriously high land prices, the room size was surprisingly generous and incredibly comfortable. The staff were all very warm, attentive, and patient when answering questions. I also loved the unique and atmospheric art installations in the lobby. The hotel is conveniently located right next to Langham Place, with an underground tunnel providing direct access to the bustling Mong Kok shopping district and Mong Kok MTR station, making it super easy to get around and shop.DariRUB 10,523

I stayed here during the Dragon Boat Festival. I had asked Trip.com customer service to arrange a quiet, high-floor room near the elevator if possible. Upon check-in, the hotel front desk upgraded me to an executive floor room based on the Trip.com note, and it was indeed very quiet. For Hong Kong, this hotel is quite spacious; there's enough room to open two suitcases simultaneously. They also provide bed rails, which is perfect if you're traveling with kids. The hotel lobby connects directly to a plaza, making dining very convenient. The only downside is if you're traveling with kids and have a lot of stuff on a stroller, it's better to take a taxi. We took bus A21 from the airport (the bus was pretty fast), but after getting off, we had to drag our luggage quite a long way, which was really exhausting.DariRUB 8,920

The location of the hotel is relatively convenient since it’s a few minutes away from Jordan Station. The temple night market and anytime fitness is close too from the hotel (approx 10-15min walk). The breakfast options aren’t the best but food was hot and decent. We had 2 main issues with the hotel which is the cleanliness and fire alarm. We found several cockroaches in the room but the staff moved us to a different room right after we reported it. Regarding the fire alarm, it went off at 2am waking us up. We evacuated and went downstairs immediately. However, they told us there was no fire and it was just gas leak issue. No apologies. Just told us that it’s normal and we should just go back to our rooms.DariRUB 3,489

Hygiene: The bed sheets and duvet covers didn't seem to have been changed, as there were a few strands of hair on the pillow, and more hair was found when I pulled back the duvet at the foot of the bed. After the sheets were changed, my skin felt itchy when I slept at night.
Service: The service was alright. They were cooperative when I asked for new sheets, trash removal, and extra tissues.
Environment: The hotel's location is quite central, making it convenient to get around.
Facilities: The facilities are a bit old, but that's understandable for Hong Kong. I just hope the hygiene conditions can be improved.DariRUB 3,545

Our stay at The Imperial Hotel Tsim Sha Tsui in Hong Kong was truly exceptional, with professional and incredibly warm service! We didn't have an umbrella when it started raining, and the front desk staff proactively offered us a hotel umbrella, which was a huge lifesaver. When checking out, the front desk auntie was so thoughtful and professional; she even gave us Ferrero Rocher chocolates, considering that tourists might experience low blood sugar. That attention to detail was so touching. The hotel's location is superb, just a few minutes' walk to Tsim Sha Tsui MTR station, making shopping and dining incredibly convenient. I was a bit hesitant after reading the reviews before booking, but decided to give it a try, especially since the price point meant I couldn't expect too much. The room was small but had everything I needed. There wasn't any musty smell as some mentioned, but the air conditioner vent was quite noisy, and the soundproofing wasn't great. If you're a light sleeper, I'd recommend booking a higher-end hotel, otherwise, you might struggle to fall asleep, like myself. Very convenient location to TST station where nearest exit N5 (stairs access only) to hotel. But there is only 1 seater in the room and no bottled water or laundry bag provided. Toiletries are provided via dispensers. Counter staff at check in can be more polite. I will choose this hotel for it's location and room size. Many food options like Red Tea, Bakehouse, dim sum, wanton mee, chagee around. K11 mall just behind hotel. This is a very good hotel for Hong Kong standards. The only minor inconvenience is that it's not directly above an MTR station, but they do offer a shuttle bus service to West Kowloon and Sha Tin. Most importantly, the soundproofing is excellent, which is incredibly rare and a huge plus! Highly recommended.

Last year, we have stayed here several times and back again this summer.
The hotel is in a very nice location with lots of restaurants nearby, good food and not very expensive relative to other tourist districts like TST. Two blocks to the MTR station and bus terminal with easy access to every part of Hongkong. Close to the Victoria Park and walking distance through the park to the Causeway Bay shopping district.
The new East Harbour-front broadwalk offering great view of the entire Victoria harbour and great for a morning jog or sunset walk. Also easy access up to the Hong Kong Island Coastal Trails.
Staffs were very friendly with super fast checkin and checkout. Seems like the hotel has also done some minor improvements like better wifi connections and placing filter units in the hallways to clean the air due to people smoking in their rooms or in the hallway, even though the hotel is supposed to be totally smoking free environment!

Returned to The Empire Hotel Hong Kong · Wan Chai again, and it's still as much a favorite as ever. For someone like me with no sense of direction, its biggest advantage is the location. It's very close to Wan Chai MTR station, making it easy to walk to and from Causeway Bay, Admiralty, and Central. The airport bus stop is also near the hotel, which is incredibly convenient. Plus, there are plenty of dining options in the area. A big thank you for the upgrade to a double room with a window! Hyatt Centric Hong Kong is definitely a hotel worth a glowing review after my trip to Hong Kong. I had a great impression of Hyatt Centric when I stayed at one in Kota Kinabalu before. This time, I checked into the Hong Kong location late at night, feeling quite upset after a terrible experience at another old five-star hotel the night before. My wife and I, with our luggage, decided to try this place out, and the overall experience significantly exceeded our expectations.
Our room was a corner room. While not exceptionally large, it felt very spacious and comfortable, not at all cramped, which my wife also appreciated. Our room offered a partial sea view, but the other side was close to a residential building, so privacy was a bit lacking, and we generally had to keep the curtains drawn. The bathroom was a little small, making it a bit awkward to place the floor mat, and the hairdryer's power was weak, making it difficult to fully dry long hair.
The service was a major highlight. Although the check-in route was a little convoluted, all the staff were very nice, genuinely warm, and unpretentious. Even though the hotel was almost fully booked, the front desk still upgraded our room type and arranged a high-floor room for us. The bellboy was also very thoughtful; he proactively offered an umbrella when we went out and helped us check ferry times. These small details left a great impression.
The location is also excellent, making it very easy to hail a taxi. The hotel is right next to a pier, and it takes about ten minutes to get to Hung Hom by ferry, which is incredibly convenient. There's also a shopping mall nearby, perfect for daily meals, shopping, and stocking up on essentials.
The North Point Exploration Package was the biggest surprise. It guides guests to experience small local shops, many of which I probably wouldn't have discovered on my own. The shop owners were all very welcoming, and the value of the vouchers was substantial, easily enough for a small brunch for two, providing a real taste of local life.
Overall, although this hotel isn't huge and leans towards a business style, its service, comfort, location, and the local exploration experience it offers are all outstanding. Especially after the unpleasant hotel experience the night before, this hotel became a truly wonderful part of my Hong Kong trip. I would definitely consider staying here again on my next visit to Hong Kong.DariRUB 9,193

The hotel is good. The location is excellent, close to many famous restaurants, and it's easy to walk around. There's an MTR station downstairs. However, the reception was slow; it took 20 minutes to get the key card, and everyone else around me had already left. The hotel doesn't provide water or amenities, but you can buy them at a reasonable price. I'd recommend having a water dispenser if you're not going to provide water. The breakfast was just average, not a lot of variety. But if I were to stay again, I would, because I really liked the location.DariRUB 7,091

Tsim Sha Tsui Hong Kong|1.85km dari pusat bandar
This hotel is always my first choice because of its excellent location, making it incredibly convenient to get to West Kowloon High-Speed Rail Station, the Hong Kong Cultural Centre, and Elements Cinema. However, with fewer tourists recently, the room rates fluctuate significantly. I wouldn't recommend booking too far in advance. I booked two months ahead, and when I contacted Trip.com and the hotel about canceling due to price changes, the hotel refused. Trip.com, however, compensated me for the price difference. I’d recommend bringing your own toiletries and slippers – the hotel's slippers are as flimsy as paper and practically unusable. I've spoken to the cleaning staff multiple times about it, and they say there's nothing they can do. Despite that, it's still a great hotel for tourists, and the staff are very polite and enthusiastic. Both times I've stayed recently, I've been able to check in early, probably due to the low occupancy. A big thank you to Trip.com! And the lobby service desk, which offers luggage storage, has always been friendly over the years.
Facilities: Good👍 This time I stayed in a room near the stairs and it was great👍 The hallway was spacious and the elevator was large~DariRUB 6,148

Tsuen Wan Hong Kong|7.97km dari pusat bandar
On a business trip, I once again stayed at the Nina Hotel Tsuen Wan West, located at 8 Yeung Uk Road. It's conveniently situated near Tsuen Wan Plaza, Tsuen Wan Park, Yeung Uk Road Market, Tsuen Wan West MTR Station, Tsuen Wan Plaza, and The Mills. The transportation is excellent, and there are plenty of dining and entertainment options!
The hotel is divided into high and low blocks, reaching up to 87 floors, making it the tallest five-star hotel in the New Territories. Below the hotel, there's a shopping mall and office space. Inside, you'll find the flagship Chinese restaurant 'Rú', the all-day buffet restaurant Café Circles, and the trendy pastry brand Nina Patisserie. The hotel also boasts a spacious outdoor swimming pool and a well-equipped fitness center, allowing guests to fully relax and unwind.
The room size is ample, and basic amenities are comprehensive. Besides local basic channels, the TV also offers cable and satellite TV. However, it's a pity there's no access to streaming platforms like Netflix and Disney+! The bathroom even has a bathtub, which I appreciate for a relaxing soak! Thanks to the hotel's height, you can enjoy panoramic views of Tsuen Wan and the Ting Kau Bridge, which is truly invigorating. The price is reasonable, offering great value for money!DariRUB 6,545

Mong Kok Hong Kong|0.49km dari pusat bandar
The hotel's location is excellent. You can take the A21 bus from the airport directly to the hotel entrance. If you're over 65, you get a 50% discount on the bus fare, which is about HKD 15. It's a good idea to set up your Hong Kong Alipay or WeChat Pay at the airport to avoid the hassle of buying and refunding an Octopus card. The room was clean, and the facilities were generally good, though the electric kettle was quite old and had some limescale on the outside. I wish the coffee cups were larger ceramic ones; they were too small to brew proper coffee, and you'd only get a sip or two. Toiletries and mineral water are not provided in the room, so you need to buy them. Water from the machine in the lobby on the first floor costs HKD 3 a bottle, which is much cheaper than buying from a convenience store. When leaving for the airport, the bus stop is near Mong Kok MTR station. If you don't have much luggage, you can take one MTR stop to transfer there. Overall, I'm satisfied with the hotel.DariRUB 5,875
