Taipei MRT Map – Taipei Metro Route & Station Map

Author's Profile Picture

Hey geng! 👋 I just got back from a makan-filled, bubble-tea-fueled adventure in Taipei, and I’ve got to say – one thing that made my trip super smooth was the Taipei MRT system. 💯

As a fellow Malaysian, I know what we look for:
✅ Easy to use
✅ Affordable
✅ Can reach all the food, shopping, and Insta-worthy spots without stress 🙌

And trust me, the Taipei MRT map became my best friend. Whether I was heading to Ximending for street food, Beitou for hot springs, or Taipei 101 for the city view, the MRT got me there – fast, clean, and on time. ⏱️

The best part? You don’t need to speak Mandarin to get around. Signs are in English, the maps are color-coded, and locals are super helpful (especially when they hear our accent – they know we’re from Malaysia lah 😄).

If you’re planning your trip to Taiwan, this MRT guide will save you time, money, and confusion – so you can focus on makan, jalan, and repeat. 😋🛍️

🏙️ Introduction to the Taipei MRT

source from https://english.metro.taipei/

If it’s your first time in Taiwan, let me assure you: the Taipei MRT (Mass Rapid Transit) is one of the most tourist-friendly transport systems I’ve ever used. It’s reliable, air-conditioned (a must!), and signs are in Mandarin, English, and even Pinyin, so tak payah risau.

Why I loved it:

  • 🚆 Trains come every few minutes
  • 🧼 Stations are super bersih
  • 💳 Easy to use with a stored-value card
  • 🗺️ The MRT map is color-coded and easy to follow

Whether you're going shopping, sightseeing, or just lepak-ing at a local café, the Taipei MRT Map is your golden key. 💛

🔴 Red Line (Tamsui–Xinyi Line 淡水信義線)

Route: Tamsui – Xiangshan
Best For: Iconic sights, sunset views, hot springs & shopping

This was my most-used line! It takes you from the scenic north (Tamsui) to the city’s bustling shopping and skyscraper zones.

🚉 Must-Stop Stations:

  • Tamsui (淡水): Beautiful riverside walk, fried squid, street food 🌅
  • Beitou / Xinbeitou (北投 / 新北投): Hot springs & public baths ♨️
  • Shilin (士林): Massive night market with everything from XXL chicken chop to bubble tea 🍗🧋
  • Taipei Main Station (台北車站): Central hub for trains, MRT & HSR
  • Taipei 101 / World Trade Center (台北101): Insta-famous skyscraper, luxury malls 🏙️
  • Xiangshan (象山): Start of the Elephant Mountain hike with the best city views 🐘

📌 Pro Tip: Try to catch the sunset at Tamsui – super romantic & perfect for photos!

🔵 Blue Line (Bannan Line 板南線)

Route: Dingpu – Nangang Exhibition Center
Best For: Shopping, night markets, and transport connections

This line cuts straight through downtown Taipei and is a backbone for both tourists and locals.

🚉 Must-Stop Stations:

  • Banqiao (板橋): Shopping malls, transport hub to Taichung, Tainan, Kaohsiung
  • Ximen (西門): Street food, fashion, arcades – think of it as Taiwan’s Shibuya 🎮🛍️
  • Zhongxiao Fuxing (忠孝復興): Big SOGO mall and Japanese stores
  • Taipei City Hall (市政府): Shopping district & close to Taipei 101
  • Nangang Exhibition Center (南港展覽館): Events, expos, and start of the Airport MRT

📌 Pro Tip: This line gets crowded during rush hour—plan your travel times if you prefer quieter rides.

🟢 Green Line (Songshan–Xindian Line 松山新店線)

Route: Songshan – Xindian
Best For: Culture, nature, and night markets

I loved this line for connecting historical sites and local food gems. It also gets you to riverside parks and some student-friendly neighborhoods.

🚉 Must-Stop Stations:

  • Songshan (松山): Raohe Night Market right outside the station – try the pepper buns! 🌶️
  • Nanjing Fuxing (南京復興): Interchange with Brown Line, great for shopping
  • Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall (中正紀念堂): Beautiful square, history, and changing of the guard
  • Gongguan (公館): University area, cute cafes, bookshops, & cheap local eats 🍱
  • Xindian (新店): Nature, Bitan Suspension Bridge, and paddle boats 🚣‍♀️

📌 Pro Tip: Perfect for an afternoon that starts with culture and ends with a chill park walk.

🟠 Orange Line (Zhonghe–Xinlu Line 中和新蘆線)

Route: Nanshijiao – Luzhou / Huilong (Y-shaped)
Best For: Local life & exploring the less-touristy Taipei

This line was quieter and gave me a peek into the everyday lives of locals. Still very connected and worth a ride if you like venturing off the beaten path.

🚉 Must-Stop Stations:

  • Nanshijiao (南勢角): Local street food & markets
  • Daqiaotou (大橋頭): Dihua Street nearby – traditional Chinese medicine & fabric shops
  • Luzhou (蘆洲): Great for local vibes and temple visits
  • Zhongxiao Xinsheng (忠孝新生): Quick switch to Blue Line

📌 Pro Tip: Don’t underestimate this line—sometimes the best eats are hidden in these “local” neighborhoods!

🌈 Brown Line (Wenhu Line 文湖線)

Route: Taipei Zoo – Nangang Exhibition Center
Best For: Scenic views, animals, tea plantations & nature

This line is elevated (above ground), so the views are super syok if you like greenery and mountain backdrops.

🚉 Must-Stop Stations:

  • Taipei Zoo (動物園): Family-friendly, home to pandas 🐼
  • Maokong Gondola (connects from zoo): Glass-bottom cable car with views of Taipei—plus tea houses! 🍵
  • Technology Building (科技大樓): Great breakfast spots nearby
  • Nangang Exhibition Center: Transfers to Blue Line

📌 Pro Tip: Go early to Maokong for morning tea and quiet scenery—feels like you’re in Cameron Highlands!

💡 Tip: Don’t forget to get an eSIM for smooth internet access in Taiwan! It’s affordable and perfect for staying connected on the go.

🟪 Taoyuan Airport MRT (桃園機場捷運)

Route: Taoyuan Airport – Taipei Main Station
Best For: Airport transfer – fast, smooth, and luggage-friendly

There are two train options:

  • Express Train: Fewer stops, ~35 minutes
  • Commuter Train: More stops, ~50 minutes

🧳 Some airlines like EVA Air even let you check-in your luggage at Taipei Main Station—how cool is that?!

📍 My MRT Travel Tips as a Malaysian:

  • 🗣️ Don’t worry if you can’t speak Mandarin—just smile and ask politely. Locals are super helpful.
  • 🧭 Use Google Maps or the Taipei MRT app—super accurate and real-time
  • 💳 Get an EasyCard (more on this later!) and top it up at convenience stores
  • 📸 Screenshot the MRT map or save it offline in your phone
  • 🚦Follow station signs carefully—platforms are clear and color-coded!

I chose the Howard Plaza Hotel for my conference, as the venue was at the Taipei International Convention Center, right next to 101. Personally, I had a good experience. Although it's an 8-9 minute walk to the MRT station, it's only two stops away from the convention center. The hotel's facilities are a bit older overall, but there were no issues with the experience itself.

The hotel is conveniently located next to Wanhua Train Station and just a short walk from Longshan Temple Metro Station. There are plenty of eateries in the surrounding neighborhood, making it easy to find meals nearby. Like many hotels in Taiwan, early check-in is not allowed, and all guests can only check in after 3 p.m. Check-in is done through a self-service machine, which feels somewhat impersonal for a hotel at this price point. The room is clean and modern, with a comfortable bed. However, it doesn’t provide complimentary bottled water; you’ll need to use the water dispenser next to the elevator. The gym is very small, equipped with just treadmills, and there’s also a small pool with a lifeguard on duty. Remember to bring a swimming cap if you plan to use the pool. There's also a play area for children which I didn't see anyone ever use.

A big thank you to the helpful Ctrip agent who went out of her way to book me the same room as my previous stay. That last visit was particularly special as we celebrated my son's acceptance into his master's program and a post-pandemic birthday here. This time, the hotel's facilities and service were as consistently excellent as before. Despite the slightly hazy view due to unfavorable weather, this is the only place that offers such a superb vantage point, with iconic Taipei landmarks like Xiaonanmen, the Presidential Office Building, Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, and Taipei 101 all visible. It was a truly enjoyable trip to Taipei, and we look forward to returning next year.

I frequently visit Taipei, but this was my first time staying at the Grand Hotel. Its vibrant red aesthetic is incredibly captivating; every time the MRT passes by, I can't help but take an extra look. My direct experience staying here was excellent. Even though it was a windowless room, it didn't feel stuffy at all, and there were no odors, which shows how diligently the hotel manages its rooms. The breakfast spread was exceptionally rich – I ate for an hour and was completely stuffed! You can also visit the secret tunnels; this time I went to the East Secret Tunnel. It cost 500 TWD, and you can book it at a counter near the hotel's front desk.

The hotel generously upgraded our rooms from twin single beds to twin double bed. The location is absolutely fantastic and strategic as it is located just across major transportation nodes for HSR, Local Train and Metro. The rooms may look a bit dated but if aesthetic isnt a major concern, all else considered, it was a convenient and pleasant stay.

The hotel is average but location is great. MRT is 2min away and close to Shopping, Spas, Restaurants, and attractions by Metro. Breakfast is fair. Healthy options are available but basic. Washer and dryer availble for $150. It's fairly far from Taipei Taoyin Airport and usually $1500-$1700. You can almost stay 2 nights here for Airport round-trip. Perhaps one of the best hotels I’ve ever stayed in! The location is incredibly convenient, just a 10-15 minute walk from Ximending station, making it easy to explore the area. The room was spacious and well-appointed, complete with complimentary bottled water. I appreciated that the housekeeping staff cleaned the room daily, provided you didn’t activate the ‘do not disturb’ button. The hotel features a unique underwater or submarine theme, which adds a fun and immersive atmosphere. I booked a room without windows, and while the lighting was somewhat dim, it created a cozy ambiance that I found quite pleasant. The receptionists were exceptionally friendly and accommodating, always ready to assist with any inquiries or requests. A thoughtful addition to the hotel is the luggage scale available for guests, allowing you to weigh your bags before checking out—definitely a great touch! We also enjoyed the breakfast buffet, which I would rate a perfect 10/10! There was an impressive variety of food options, including a delightful hotpot selection. The bathroom facilities were well-designed, with the toilet and shower room separated for added convenience. They provided complimentary body wash and shampoo, and I was pleased to see that the bed sheets were changed daily, ensuring a fresh and clean environment throughout my stay. Overall, I highly recommend this hotel for its excellent location, friendly service, and thoughtful amenities!

I stayed at Midtown Richardson Taipei and overall the room cleanliness and hotel service were very good. The room was comfortable, tidy, and well-maintained, and the front desk staff were friendly and helpful. However, I had a disappointing experience at the breakfast restaurant. One morning, I noticed another guest accidentally dropped a piece of bread on the floor and placed it back into the food tray. I picked up the bread and handed it to one of the staff to alert her. Instead of acknowledging it, she gave me a black face, threw the bread into an empty tray, and continued with her work without any response. This left a very negative impression, especially since hygiene and customer service are important in a dining area. Overall, the hotel stay was pleasant, but I hope the breakfast restaurant staff can improve their attitude and professionalism in the future.

Overall a pleasant stay. Staff are polite and pleasant, the dried tomatoes at L5 is good. 😊 only hair dryer, handwash, body wash and 2in1 shampoo/conditioner provided in room so be sure so bring your other toiletries if you need! Pros 😊 - fuss free check in (room was ready ahead of check in time so recep let us in) - water dispenser avail (don’t have to buy your water) and 2 bottles in room daily - small area at L5 for you to relax at with some snacks and drinks (great if you’re having a late flight and need somewhere to rest after checking out, or if you arrive early before check in) - easy walk to xmd - bus stop outside with buses that gets you to most places Cons 😞 - poor sound proofing (can hear kids running down the rooms, people chatting outside, opening/closing of doors) - room not super conducive for light sleepers. E.g there is gap between the pelmet and curtain so once the sun rises, the light will shine into the room, your room will not be in the complete black-out state. Can bring an eye mask to help with this! - very basic room amenities. - slightly steep price given how basic and no-frills this hotel is.

Air conditioning is weak in the mid of summer, can't seem to adjust it, might be central airconditioning. Breakfast is a simple fare, but the scrambled eggs was cooked perfectly! This used to be one of the best hotels in Taipei, unfortunately the service has fallen a long way since covid. Switches in the room were not working, I tried ordering room service and the front desk staff just hung up on me, and the details I provided immediately were sold to someone who tried hacking my accounts. I use different throwaway emails when I register for hotels in foreign countries, so I know right away when a property is selling the guests info. This was so disappointing because Eclat seems to be a hotel where the owners spared no expense, and every detail was immaculate and with a total focus on art and beauty. But now it seems like the property was sold to scammers and the staff doesn't really care.

🧭 Summary of the Taipei MRT Map – Why It’s a Game-Changer

After exploring Taipei from morning till malam every day, I can honestly say that the Taipei MRT system made my trip so much easier, cheaper, and more fun. 😄 I didn’t need to worry about expensive taxis, complicated routes, or getting sesat in a new city.

With the Taipei MRT map in one hand and my EasyCard in the other, I managed to:

  • Catch sunset at Tamsui Old Street 🌅
  • Relax in the Beitou hot springs ♨️
  • Eat non-stop at Shilin and Raohe night markets 🍢
  • Take the Maokong Gondola for tea with a view 🍵
  • Hike up Elephant Mountain and snap pics of Taipei 101 📸

And all this was just a few MRT stops away!

The trains are clean, the stations are well-marked, and the connections are super smooth. As a Malaysian who’s used to crowded LRTs and complicated bus changes, I was really impressed lah. 🙌
