Waldorf Astoria Edinburgh - The Caledonian

Our assessment of our 3 night stay at the Waldorf was mixed. The hotel was very nice and as a Diamond member we were upgraded to a castle view room. The complimentary breakfast was very good and the front desk staff were generally helpful. We did have a problem one night with the light fixture leaking water from the ceiling. This may have been due to a rainstorm one night and staff brought a bucket to catch the leaking water. The biggest problem, however, occurred after checkout. At the time of checkout I was told that the hotel printer wasn’t working so they would email me my receipt. Since all 3 nights were paid for with HH points I asked if there was a zero balance and was told yes. Later that day I received the final bill and was charged over $1,000 on my credit card for all three nights. I immediately called the hotel and was told by in house reservations staff that my reservation had been cancelled when I didn’t show up. I reminded them that we had been staying with them the last 3 nights and had no problem at checkin on the scheduled day. In fact I confirmed our arrival time several hours before checkin. So they didn’t know what the problem was but would talk to the reservations manager when they were free. In the meantime I called the Hilton diamond desk and again was told that someone had cancelled my stay with points and it had been rebooked by someone as a cash stay and they were not sure what the problem was. My points had even been put back onto my account by someone. By now I am a bit irritated. I finally receive a call back from the hotel reservation manager who tells me that the Waldorf had a computer glitch on our arrival date and that all hotel reservations had been cancelled and had to be manually reentered by hotel staff. However, Hilton hotels have no way to make reservations using points so they made them as a cash payment. Thereby the $1,000 bill. Now glitches are bound to occur sometimes. However, all of this angst could have been avoided by telling me at checkin about the problem and I could have immediately rebooked the room using points while standing at the front desk. The hotel did ultimately reverse the charges and apologize. However. this shouldn’t happen at a property like the Waldorf.

In all honesty we decided on the apartments because it was the cheapest available for a bank holiday weekend and seeing Harry Styles. It was great and no complaints and we were pleasantly surprised, it worked well having a bedroom then separate living area with sofa bed and mini kitchen for privacy & snorers lol. We initially thought it was the west end so bit far out from Murrayfield stadium/princes street but it really wasn’t that far at all and was a nice sunny day. Would 100% stay here again

We stayed two nights at The Lane Hotel and it was a great experience. The room was sparkly clean, the bed was really comfy, shower & bath was great and all the staff were really kind and helpful! The hotel is located in a very nice residential area in Edinburgh with lots of cafe and restaurants nearby, would definitely recommend The Lane Hotel to anyone who wants to stay in Edinburgh!

Quirky, beautifully-appointed boutique hotel with welcoming and friendly staff. The rooms, whilst not huge, were extremely comfortable and our room (108) had a beautiful high ceiling, with stunning cornice and a huge bay window overlooking the park. Little touches like tasty shortbread biscuits, delicious smelling toiletries and a great shower made our one night stay even more enjoyable. We ate in the restaurant for dinner and breakfast. Our dinner was very good, the steak pies in particular worthy of mention, also the excellent service. The breakfast next day was ok overall, with great service again from our waitress. There was however a mix up with my order, which was quickly sorted without fuss or question. Sadly however, my replacement was not as hot as it should have been. But this was my only negative on an overall good experience at this hotel. Would happily recommend, with one other very small caveat. Our room at the front overlooked the outdoor seating area and I did wonder if on weekends it may get a bit noisy? We stayed midweek which was fine, but I can envisage the bar getting very busy at weekends and in the summer, as it’s so atmospheric and buzzy. That’s no bad thing if you are just coming for drinks and/or dinner - what a great atmosphere! - but may be an issue if trying to sleep?

This hostel provided just what we needed for a one night stay in the city before an early morning journey to the airport. Three of us travelling together stayed in the triple room with shared bathroom. Our room was well furnished with a double bed and set of bunk beds, sink/wash area, full length mirror, table and tv. The beds were comfortable and everywhere was clean, plus you could adjust the heat on the radiators yourself in your room. The shared bathrooms on our floor were all individually private, with both a toilet and shower inside - plenty of room to get changed in and hot water available! We arrived fairly late in the evening and departed before 6am so we didn't use the other facilities such as the kitchen or lounge area, but from what we could see the kitchen had good amenities and the lounge looked comfortable. The reception closed at 7pm so we didn't have any face to face interaction with staff but received a detailed email on how to check in/access our room. I think the hostel overall is in need of some TLC and updates/new furniture (there's a lot of wear and tear in areas) but I would happily stay here again, the location was decent and the atmosphere good - we weren't disturbed by anyone.
