Everything was fantastic, hotel location, services and design of the hotel. I enjoyed the 2 nights there. Unfortunately the welcoming was not good for me as I waited for 3 hours and 20 minutes. Yes I came early before the check in time which is 2 Pm and I came at 11:50 and the front deck staff ( Eduard ) confirm to me that my room will be ready at 2 pm but till 3:10 pm only I got to my room after I esclate my issue to the front deck manager ( Peter ), the problem was not about the time I lost, but the attitude of front deck staff as he is looking to my face multiple times and he didn’t come to say sorry that your room not yet ready just to apologizing…

Very good hotel in an excellent location for an easy if hilly walk into town.The room was big and we were on a corner so had 3 balconies. The only thing that let it down was the furnishings could do with being cleaned ie sofa bed was grubby. However we found the beds very comfy and clean.The food was very good and staff could not have been more helpful. We would definitely go back in a few years.

We have just returned from a thoroughly enjoyable week here. We had, of course, seen several very positive reviews here before booking, which had been encouraging, even although we always treat the most gushing praise with a degree of caution. Very well done Porto Mare Hotel - you more than lived up to the expectations the other reviewers had generated in us! What a marvellous hotel! We were fortunate to have a very pleasant top floor room which gave us excellent views of the delightful and very well-maintained gardens, the main pool and the sea beyond. We found the staff, without exception, to be very friendly, approachable and helpful - and, as many others have done before me, I do have to mention the breakfasts - just wow! The only slight disappointment for us was that the showers (yes, there were two different types - standard and 'rainwater' ) were above the bath, rather than having their own cubicle. However, that really did not detract from the overall experience of a wonderful stay. We will certainly be lookng to return to the Porto Mare on our next visit to Madeira. Thank you all.

My first trip to Madeira and this hotel was such a great choice. close enough to Funchal centre to be within walking distance and quiet enough you didn't feel like you were in a big city. The view was fabulous and sunrise a joy. Surrounded by gardens the morning bird chorus was amazing and a great way to wake up. The Hotel was built in the 70's and is showing a little age but in a charming way. Being an architecture lover I was in hog heaven to view this Oscar Meyermier classic... The rooms are large enough for two, Clean, great shower, tidied everyday and all the staff are very helpful and knowledgeable. A few other reviews have complained about the food but for the price, I found it just right. Already looking forward to my next stay in September.

Nice entertainer couple! Good dancers! Excellent teachers having lovely dancing skills! Also a great team with activities for children. Concerning the hotel, it is a nice place to stay on 31st december and choose the opportunity to view the fireworks show in Madeira Island!

This hotel was excellent. There are 1 and 2 star reviews here on TA - I do not recognise the picture in these reviews - all I can say is that the more spelling mistakes I see in a review, the less I value it. (I mean - you expect the hotel to be so perfect in every respect, the least you could do is exercise the same level of care and attention in your review. How can you expect high standards elsewhere when you don't hold yourself to the same level?) From the moment we walked in we felt welcome. The check-in was very simple and efficient. We arrived quite late, and they'd thought to have a tray of cold food sent up to our room for us. Thank you! There is an underground car-park free for guests (useful with a hire car) and whilst we were there it was not too busy at any point. The Wifi is easy to connect to and pretty fast. It did tend to drop out quite a bit when in the main bar area, but otherwise it was problem-free. The pools and areas are excellent - perhaps it would be nice to have one of the outdoor pools slightly heated - they could be cold. The little gym is fine - like most hotel gyms its not exactly a full health-club, but it allows you to keep up most of your workout routine. Restaurants - really good. The buffet for breakfast and evening meal was excellent - very well presented, maintained, and huge choice. That includes for vegetarians, with the slight caveat that it would have been nice to have vegetarian hot main meals for dinner, although with the very wide salad range, no-one is short of choice. The three special restaurants (Madeiran, Italian, and Moroccan) were also great, and although you have to book in advance, there's no limitation on how many times you can go. Vegetarians here generally have to ask, but then there are plenty of options. The staff in all the restaurants were particularly friendly and good at what they do. The room was nice, and comfortable. We had a double room with an extra bed (to make it a family room) - perhaps it was a little small for that given that it is a 5-star, but it was by no means cramped and if you were just a couple in that, then you'd be fine. The room housekeeping was good. A small criticism is that although there was a leaflet saying that soft drinks in the minibar would be replaced (for free) this wasn't done - I don't know if we needed to specifically ask. It wasn't a problem for us (or we would have asked) but it would be nice to have had that happen automatically. Point of criticism - we seemed to spend a little longer waiting for lifts than would be ideal - there seemed to be one lift out of operation although no signage to that effect, and the lifts were a little under-sized - quite cramped when more than three people were in. In many ways the experience of a hotel like this can be affected by the number of people, and while we were here, it didn't seem overly full - perfect for us but may not always be like that. One of the world's great hotels, Reid's does not disappoint. We had a ten night stay recently (Feb 2024) in a deluxe sea view room. Everything about Reid's is a five star experience starting every day with a fantastic breakfast. All the staff go that extra mile to make your stay as memorable as possible. We dined once in the Michelin starred Willam restaurant, which was excellent. So too is the Italian, Villa Cipriani, which we used on two occasions. Our room (564) was great from where we could step out into the garden. Beds are super comfortable and every room as a fully stocked minibar from which you can help yourself to free soft drinks which are topped up on a daily basis. Funchal centre is around a tweny minute walk away down the hill, which we did more or less every day of our wonderful stay. It's not a cheap experience, but you get what you pay for. This was our third stay at Reid's and will definately not be the last !

Overall great stay and we'll likely be back next time we visit Madeira. Great location close to lots of restaurants and bars, and bus stops. It's not too far to walk to the city center and there's lots to see on the way there, too. The rooms were clean, shampoo etc. was provided and there were even extra blankets which we were very grateful for as it can be chilly at night. What we did not enjoy that much was the breakfast, as both restaurants serve about the same food and it was the same every morning. The taste was ok but we probably won't add breakfast the next time we stay, or not for all days. Most of the staff were friendly and helpful, however, the hotel appeared to be understaffed, meaning we'd have to wait quite a bit to receive service, e.g., at the reception, and staff seemed stressed at times.

This was our 5th holiday at the wonderful Santa Maria. Everything about this hotel is just simply perfect from the location, hotel facilities and brilliant, friendly staff. Nothing is to much trouble and all staff go out of their way to make it a perfect holiday for all their guests. You simply cannot fault this hotel is any way. Our only disappointment - having to come home!! but we are booked to come again May 2024 and already counting the days.
