Our stay in Monteverde marked the midpoint of our first trip to Costa Rica, and a mistake led to an unexpected opportunity. Our itinerary required a 3-night stay but we accidentally only reserved two nights in Glass Cabin 2. Thankfully, Black Glass haus was available for the third night, so we had the opportunity to sample two of the extraordinary units on this property. Upon arrival, we were greeted by Aaron, a young genial English-speaking gentleman, who helped us with our luggage and oriented us to our first place. Upon entry, the view took our breath away. We had driven up from La Fortuna that day and had stopped along the road to photograph the beautiful countryside, unaware that the most beautiful view would be available to us from the comfort of our room. Aaron skillfully demonstrated all the many amenities, which included electric shades that doubled as a projector screen, massaging beds, an outdoor jacuzzi and outdoor shower, a beautiful modern bathroom with shower and jacuzzi tub and a kitchen with several snacks on hand. They even provided some eggs in the refrigerator. For our transfer to Black Glass haus, Aaron invited us to leave our packed bags in the foyer of Glass Cabin 2, and the staff would take responsibility for the move to Black Glass Haus. Both properties offer breathtaking views of the area. Black Glass Haus has a romantic wood burning stove and a 2-person shower. It’s a little smaller and more difficult to utilize some of the storage space. I think our preference for Glass Cabin 2 may have been determined by its having been our first encounter. I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the difficulty driving in the area. Many other reviewers comment about the “bumpy” roads, but I think that doesn’t do the experience justice. The word “road” is a euphemism. One should drive a 4WD SUV to be certain one has adequate clearance. Driving in the area is a continual challenge to avoid potholes, and the experience quickly becomes tedious. There is a “Door Dash”-like service offered, and I thought of it often when venturing out for lunch or dinner, though we never used it. Still, the prize at the end of the drive is very much worth the experience.
