We have gone to Chequers since 2021 and when it was new, it used to be a pleasant stay. Receptionists were respectful, the hotel WAS pet friendly, and rates were reasonably priced; well that was up until this year. When we came back this Feb., they increased their rates and hotel deposit, because of the inclusion of breakfast and some drinks which were non optional to remove. When I asked what the menu is, the answer is "the do not know." How can you actually charge something and not know what you are charging for? They also do not have take out option for the breakfast and only allowed this after I requested several times if they can just buy a take out box as this is very cheap to do so. The "complimentary" drink was also not allowed to be consumed in the room and they require you to drink it in their bar. So many made up rules. The room given to us was dusty and had a broken door. The next time we came back in April, more made up rules again which were not advised pre booking. They say they are pet friendly but pets are only allowed to stay in the ground floor. Please note that the owner himself has a dog roaming the hotel Since we had a reservation in the 5th floor,the receptionists asked us to walk to the basement and to go up the 5th floor using the elevator so the owner wouldn't see the pet. Very stupid. To add, the 2 receptionists were maskless the whole time they were checking in guests. Very disrespectful. We were so pissed with the hotel we just went home and did not push thru with the booking. Service quality is just getting worse for each visit.
