Summary:
-balcony door was defective and could be opened from the outside
-receptionist gave us a smaller room without compensation
-receptionist assured us that we were safe as we were on the 5th floor (assuming criminals do not scale buildings)
-the fear of myself or children being assaulted in the night and physically forced to commit lewd acts on criminals is at a higher possibility than at other hotels due to this issue
-risk of losing personal property was higher due to lack of working lock

I booked this room for myself and two young children. We got the junior suite but we found out that the balcony door could be easily opened by a toothpick, as demonstrated in my attached photos. They were kind enough to switch us to smaller room but without compensating us for any changes.
When I informed the reception, their response was that we were on the fifth floor so it was safe even without a working lock.
I told the handyman that there was a history of problems with the balcony lock and he didn’t acknowledge until I showed him the pry marks and the patchwork done just to hold the door together as shown in the pictures.
Even in the lobby toilets, there were no locks in the stalls so the risk of physical assault, among other kinds of assault, is very probable for criminals should they wish to commit crimes. Rome is not known as a safe city as shown in various clips online and crime statistics and the chances of victimisation is high.
I would not choose this hotel again as the safety of my young children is paramount and of prime importance to me. This is probably the wrong hotel for families or female travellers.
