We were excited to find an option in San Francisco with a shared kitchen so that we could prepare our own food while there. The self-check-in scenario didn't scare us off but perhaps it should have. What follows is a lot of problems, but overall, the experience at the Kasa La Monarca was not terrible. It just really did not meet reasonable expectations of a hotel. Think of this hotel as an expensive youth hostel with private bathrooms. Our experience began with getting an update less than 48 hours before arrival that the elevator was not in service. We called immediately and were moved down from the 6th to the 3rd floor, but would not have been able to cancel as it was within the 48 hour cancellation period. We were assured that no other services were impacted. When we arrived, we realized that our bed was downgraded from king to queen, but were still happy with the shared kitchen offering. Unfortunately, the next morning, we realized that the oven and stovetop was off during the day, due to the workers fixing the crumbling wall that was the cause of the elevator interruption. Our room did not seem to have HVAC at all, as it was hot during the afternoon and evening and then dropped to very cold temperatures at night. We asked for an additional cover the third night to deal with the cold. They could not provide the extra cover that night, as their staff was already offsite. The next day when we returned to the suite, there was no cover, so we texted and were told to go to the housekeeping closet with an entry code - to no avail as there was no cover there either. It was again too late for them to deliver a cover, so we were promised tomorrow again. The next day when we returned to the room there was a sheet in a bag left outside the room, not a cover. It was again too late for them to deliver a cover, so we were promised tomorrow a third time. The next day we relaxed for the morning, and before leaving in the afternoon, I went looking for a staff member to ask for a cover. We finally got an additional cover halfway through our stay. Given the style of hotel relations to guests, you would expect their communications to be exceptionally good. However, they often have significant mistakes. One was a message confirming our check in time for the WRONG hotel, forcing us to call them to confirm that we were not rebooked into a different hotel entirely. The APEC summit was held nearby in San Francisco. Despite all of the local businesses having been provided advance warning of potential impacts, Kasa did not think it would be important to provide their guests any information. The front door lock is finnicky and results in many guests stuck outside for a while when they first arrive, unless another guest happens to be in the lobby to help them. The pictures shown online have either been taken with lots of additional light or photoshopped - not sure this is much different from other hotels, though it is also misleading. Not many shops nor restaurants inside. The room is highly rated. The service of welcome drinks can be improved, not feeling good to fall in the line to get a free drink.

Excellent choice! Super satisfied with my room cleanliness and size and the lady manager in the front desk was so helpful and hooked me up with a nice view. I will definitely stay here again. So near everything. Love it. Make sure you check out the roof top view at the restaurant bar, amazing!

Absolutely good hotel for a trip. Very close to the wharf and beach. The rooms are clean and comfortable. Surrounding districts are safe. But extremely LOW efficiency of the reception staff. Kept us waiting for housekeeping for AN HOUR without a single word of apology but LIES and disrespect.

Not Kimpton Level Quality. This is a nice Holiday Inn, but not worth the Kimpton price. Stayed for 5 nights. CONS: Homeless guy sitting in the corner sleeping at the long table in the nook of the lobby! Flies swarming outside front doors day and night; and flies in the lobby when they prop open the front door! Stairs going down to enter hotel; very inconvenient with luggage; Everyone pays for parking in price of room, even if you don't have a car; No coffee nor microwave in room; Coffee only in lobby only from 6-10am and it was already COLD at 6:45am; False Advertising: I measured the ”Queen bed”. It's NOT a Queen, it's a FULL sized mattress (smaller) bed! Why did the guy checking in the 4 of us ask if I wanted a free upgrade from 2 Queens to ONE King?!?! I assumed he said 2 Kings, but nope, he checked the 4 of us into a room with only 1 KING bed and explained their rooms are not big enough for 2 Kings. Wow! LOUD ANNOYING keyboard player/singer in small lobby Saturday night; guy checking us in had to shout over the ”music”; No dresser; Dirty, dusty carpet along the walls; Ice only on 3rd & 7th floors; Fitness Center is useless for weight lifting: hand weights up to only 25lbs and no Universal weights machine. 4 cardio machines not necessary because you automatically get your cardio walking anywhere in the city; No breakfast & their on-site restaurant went out of business; They ignored the loud car alarm in their garage for at least 10 minutes. Listen to audio file from lobby attached. PROS: Excellent Customer Service

Opted for early check in for an additional USD 25. Good location, big room. Nice gym. Cable car and bus stops nearby, good location!
