Palazzo Sant'Angelo

We stayed at Palazzo Sant’Angelo in Spoleto for 10 days in late April 2024 on the first leg of a month long trip through Central Italy. It made an ideal base from which to visit the magnificent hill towns of Umbria. This outstanding “boutique bed & breakfast” is housed in a lovingly restored 15th century building on a narrow street within the medieval walls of Spoleto. It is conveniently located within walking distance of the many historic sites, restaurants and shops that made Spoleto our favourite of the ten Umbrian hill towns that we visited. The B&B itself is comfortably upscale. We stayed in the Green Room which is filled with light from two double doors leading out to a balcony overlooking both the B&B’s beautiful garden and the distant hills. The frescoed ceilings of our room and the very comfortable bed and luxuriously finished bathroom provided a haven of serenity after each day of driving and walking around Umbria. The included breakfast was served in two light-filled rooms and in the serenity of the garden. It was the best and most generous breakfast that we enjoyed on this visit to Italy, with a dazzling selection of fresh fruit, juices, yogurt, cereals, cheese, pastries and a different home-made (by Lori) cake and baked breakfast offering each day, made even more special by the warm welcome and discreet service provided by Maria Celeste. Notwithstanding all of the above however, it was our hosts, Lori and Justin, who made our stay so special. It was their vision and hard work that created the Palazzo that we so enjoyed. They were welcoming, generous and incredibly accommodating, assisting us with restaurant recommendations and reservations (our favourite was La Torretta), car rental (we used Avis in Spoleto which was great), parking near the Palazzo and our touring across Umbria. We were delighted with our experience at Palazzo Sant’Angelo and have no hesitation in highly recommending it!

We had a great time at this boutique hotel. It’s a charming place with a very kind staff. They do everything for you enjoy Umbria. The breakfast is very good, the view is beautiful and you can walk everywhere. I recommend it!

Beautiful restored historic property. Bedroom was comfortable and spacious. The outdoor garden was lovely with great views. Perfect location. Quiet but also easy to walk into all parts of Spoleto. Breakfast was fantastic. Lori was the perfect host. Very helpful and interactive in a positive way. Her assistant Celeste was also great.

We had an altogether perfect stay at Palazzo Sant'Angelo. Lori made us feel welcome the moment we stepped over the threshold of this stunning town house. The tranquility that pervades the rooms continues outside to the thoughtfully designed gardens with ancient wisteria and olive tree. The bedroom with adjoining sitting room and bathroom was stylish and very comfortable, and the balcony gives magnificent views over the gardens, hills and castle. We particularly enjoyed the mouth watering array of homemade dishes for breakfast, eaten under the shade of the flowering wisteria. We appreciate all the work and dedication taken in the renovation of the Palazzo and the attention to historical detail is impressive. It would be hard to find more perfect hosts than Lori and Justin, with the lovely Celeste ever present to help too. We look forward to returning in the future!

We recently had our second fabulous stay at Lori and Justin’s beautifully restored and renovated palazzo which is perfectly located in the old town. They are the loveliest of hosts with the most wonderful staff- Celeste is a gem. Not a single design nor hospitality detail has been overlooked - every room is lovingly restored, comfortable and beautiful, breakfast is varied, delicious and beautifully presented, everyone is generous with their attention and focus on the comfort and enjoyment of their guests. Lori is so helpful and accommodating with information, restaurant recommendations and reservations and anything else you may have questions about. When the roads exiting Spoleto were all closed due to a bicycle race, Lori and Justin cheerfully dropped everything, got in their own car as we followed in ours around and through the town checking each exit until they found finally one open and led us out of Spoleto to catch our plane from Rome. I cannot say enough about them, their hospitality or the wonderful palazzo itself. Impossible to recommend any more highly- loved it all.

This place is so perfect that we judged everywhere else we stayed at by this experience and nothing measured up. Lori and Justin have set the bar very high, their restoration work is exemplary and everywhere you look the attention to detail is stunning. Nothing was too much trouble for Lori who exudes warmth from the minute you arrive. We stayed in the garden room which has it's own private garden and is surprisingly peaceful considering you are in the middle of the old town. Breakfast was scrumptious and every Restaurant Lori recommended was a hit. We came as clients and left as friends and cannot recommend it highly enough.

We join every other reviewer with “excellent”. Beautifully renovated historical palazzo with every amenity overseen by ever available and welcoming owner Lori and her vibrant friendly housekeeper Celeste. Our SPOLETO day started with a relaxing and bountiful breakfast in the quiet garden and then onto a wander around the town or a visit to another hilltop town such as nearby Assisi or Orvieto. Palazzo Sant’ Angelo made our trip particularly memorable.

We just completed a section of the Camino of St Francis and it was a hot day. Our hosts welcomed us in as old friends, sat us down with a cool drink and invited us to enjoy their garden. And what a sight! We looked out over a beautiful and well kept garden across to the hills behind Spoleto and we sat down in the cool of the breakfast area. Our room was spacious and comfortable (in the middle ages, the premises was the hotel for aristocracy when they came and dropped off their daughters to attend the convent school nearby), and we were able to relax after a long walk. Located in the old part of town, it is near a number of attractions and restaurants. We spent 2 nights there and were able to walk everywhere we wanted to go. Whilst the hotel is nothing to look at from the road outside, it is absolutely amazing when you walk through the front door. The decor is tasteful, the rooms are spacious and comfortable (ours overlooked the hills of Monteluco and we could see the Ponte delle Torri and Rocca Albornoziana to our left), it was cool and inviting and the garden out the back a good place to relax with a cool drink or coffee. Our hosts made us feel very welcome and prided themselves on providing top class and private accommodation. Discretion was a byword and they ensured we were able to come and go as needed. The hotel has been operating since 2017 and well worth staying in when in Spoleto.

It is not just the beautifully presented room, or the peaceful garden setting overlooking the convent to the mountains beyond, or the sumptuous quality breakfast which varied each morning, or the charming hosts who made us so welcome. It’s all of these things. A special thanks to Lori who is a kind soul.
