Yunnan's two busiest stops sit 341 km apart, and the railway between them does most of the work. Between 12 and 16 trains run each day in either direction, the quickest covers the ground in 3 hours 23 minutes, and second class seats start at RM82.55. Booking one takes five minutes. A flight spends less time in the air and then hands you two airport transfers, a baggage drop and a second security queue. Lijiang Sanyi Airport sits 26 km from the old town before you have collected a bag. The train ends 10 km from the same gates.

Which Kunming station, and why your ticket might say Kunming South

Kunming spreads its high-speed departures over two stations, and this is where visitors lose time. On the day I checked, Trip.com listed four Kunming to Lijiang departures from Kunming station and two from Kunming South. The two are not neighbours.

Kunming station sits in the older city, close to Kunming Old Street. Kunming South is the new build out in Chenggong District, and its address on Lianda Street puts it well outside the centre. Journey times separate them too. The 10:15 train from Kunming station reaches Lijiang in 3 hours 29 minutes, while the 13:36 from Kunming South needs 4 hours 52 minutes for the same 341 km. If you book the wrong one, an 18 minute connecting train links the two stations for about RM5.70.

Trip.com's live timetable showed 12 departures on the day I looked, a figure that drifts between 12 and 16 as the date changes. The first leaves soon after midnight, and the last pulls out at 21:34.

C86 is the one to aim for. It leaves Kunming station at 10:15 and puts you in Lijiang at 13:44, early enough for a late lunch and a slow afternoon of wandering. Take C450 two hours later if you would rather sleep in and still arrive in daylight.

The Lijiang to Kunming trains run in similar numbers, around 14 a day, first out at 08:08 and last at 21:34. Speeds hold up in this direction, with a fastest run of 3 hours 23 minutes.

Y768 is the sleeper, and it is the quiet bargain of the route. The 18:02 departure reaches Kunming at 05:18 the next morning, which saves a hotel night if you fly out early. Book a berth, bring earplugs, and treat those 11 hours as your accommodation. Everyone else should take C456 at 13:01.

What a seat costs

Second class on this route starts at RM82.55, and Trip.com quotes a ceiling of RM126.36 across the trains and seat types on offer. Treat any single figure as a snapshot, because price moves with the train, the class and the date.

Business class appears on selected departures only, and sleeper berths only on the overnight runs, so check the seat map before you set your heart on either. Second class sells out first on Friday afternoons and during the school holidays.

Tickets open 15 days before departure, not months ahead. Set a reminder for 15 days out, then book the moment the window opens, since the popular morning trains go quickly.

A passport is all you need. Enter your name exactly as it appears on the document, including middle names, because the gate scanner matches the booking against the chip in the passport. Malaysian travellers get 30 days visa free per entry under the agreement that took effect on 17 July 2025.

Two rules catch people out later. Each ticket can be changed once, and that change covers the date, the train number and the seat class only. Passenger names and ID types are locked. Refunds work up to 60 minutes before departure and not after.

Luggage is carry-on only, since there is no baggage consignment service on this route. The allowance is 20 kg for an adult and 10 kg for a child, and no single piece may exceed 130 cm in length, width and depth combined. Bring water and food. Nobody weighs a backpack, but an oversized hard case annoys everyone on a 3 hour train, including you.

From Lijiang station to the old town

Your journey is not over when the train stops, because the station sits 10 km south of the old town. A taxi or a DiDi into Dayan costs CNY 25 to 35, about RM15 to RM21, and takes 20 to 30 minutes. Buses 4 and 16 do the same trip for CNY 2 to 4.

Sort two things before you leave the station. Agree the fare or use the app before you get in, and have your Lijiang hotel address in Chinese characters ready, since old town guesthouses sit in alleys that maps handle badly.

What the ride is like, and the altitude question

The line climbs onto the Yunnan-Guizhou plateau and keeps going. Kunming sits at about 1,900 m and Lijiang at 2,400 m, so the last stretch tilts upward past terraced fields and northern hills. Windows are large, and phone signal comes and goes in the cuttings.

Altitude is the part nobody warns you about. That 500 m of extra height is enough for a mild headache on the first evening if you flew in from sea level that morning. Drink more water than feels necessary, skip the second beer, and give your body one night in the old town before you ride the cable car up Yulong Snow Mountain to 4,506 m.
