Pousada Convento de Evora – Historic Hotel

With my family I booked a room in the Pousada Convento Évora. The “cel” n 4 was supposed to be a superior/suite room but unfortunately it was an overestimated definition…the carpet was dirty, the air conditioning was loud and full of mold, the room window (restaurant side) was broken and it wasn’t possible to be closed. The swimming pool was dirty ( I was not able to see my foot on the bottom of the pool…). After checking out we asked for some help with our luggages, our car was in the hotel parking but the concierge, instead of offering us some help, suggested us to drive the car to the front of the hotel…she didn’t say that the we would have to drive the car trough the narrow streets around all town (I damaged the car in one of those streets). I’m totally disappointed for the low care received in this kind of “high level structure”

Beautiful historic charming hotel and fantastic location; right in the middle of the historic centre. The staff were incredibly friendly and polite. Very peaceful environment and also very clean. Loved staying at this hotel and definitely will stay there again in the future !

THE place to stay in Evora! Evora has several nice places to stay but you would not stay any other place than this fabulous Pousada. A converted monastery with at great feel to it, smack in the middle of this charming university town. The staff is supernice and knowledgable - and will direct you to one of many great monuments, churches and interesting places to visit. The cells are very cute and adoringly decorated. The suites are out of this world. Just do it!

Close to $400 (Canadian Dollars), but what a treat! This historic location will take your breath away. The breakfast was royal! Service impeccable! Very well located, right beside the gorgeous Roman ruins. Breath taking. Our room was not as luxurious as the rest of the Pousada. Mattress was hard (too hard for us). Maybe to remind us that we are staying in a former convent! We loved our experience.

Service: Front desk staff was extremely friendly and cheerful. Same goes to the food & beverage guest facing staff. We were treated well throughout the hotel with no gaps in service or attention. Breakfast selection was fresh and having the opportunity to try traditional “convent cakes” is a real treat. The lobby bar is very quiet but it’s a good place to come for an afternoon snack (sandwiches, toast with butter, potato chips/crisps). Facilities: Wanted to use the outdoor pool but the weather was too cold to go swimming. No fault of the hotel. - does not have an elevator, not good for elderly guests. - parking is limited, call in advance to get a spot or drive around the city to find an empty spot like we did. - driving to the hotel is tricky as the location is in the historic city center with very steel and narrow roads. - free WiFi and good connectivity throughout. Hygeine (overall): Although the convent is centuries old we find the common areas very clean and full of sunlight. Only area we find to be dark are the interior corridors towards to swimming pool and another set of hotel rooms. Antique furniture and the display of azuleju and tapestries were very well done and well preserved. Rooms: We stayed on the 2nd floor and had a nice view to the Cathedral. The rooms were clean and very basic. Loved the hotel using local Portuguese brand Castelbel for shampoo/soap and the body lotion. - does not have hot water kettle (some hotels you need to call to have it delivered to the room, we did not do that this time) - acoustics are quite powerful especially the noise from the corridor to the room. - need to confirm a breakfast time slot the evening before. All in all, our stay was pleasant and I had one of the best sleeps. It was so close to major landmarks and will certainly come back to stay.

I booked this hotel mainly because its proximity to the Roman Temple. I chose the room which was a suite because it mentioned a partial view of the Temple. Unfortunately, what we got was a view of a wall. The bedroom opened out onto the breakfast area. The room was shabby with faded carpets. The bath with shower over was not easy to get in and out of for our 70 something bodies. A rubber mat would have helped. The air con broke down on the first night and although it appeared fixed it failed again on our second night. Sleep was fitful on both nights as it was quite warm. If you arrive by car be aware of the narrow streets. My satnav tried to take us down no entry streets. We eventually parked up and walked to the hotel. The saving grace for this hotel is the staff. They were great. 5 Star it is not.

A beautiful and historic building in a lovely setting. The staff are friendly, welcoming and helpful. However, for the money they are charging they should have been better. We were 3 couples travelling together and all of us had various issues with our rooms that rather took the shine off things. In 2 rooms the bath plugs didn’t work, so taking a bath was impossible. One of these rooms had no water to a sink tap. This was all reported to reception but never fixed. One room was missing a coffee machine (plus the bath issue). In another room the toilet cistern stopped working. It was several hours and a chase up after reporting the problem that we were told it couldn’t be fixed. To be fair, they did eventually provide us with another room. We raised these issues at checkout (we had prepaid) but were told that any complaints had to be made to the hotel group head office. We all had a lovely stay but this is not a cheap place to stay and as a minimum we expected things like baths and toilets to work!

Beautiful historical building, walking along its corridors can create illusions of what was back when it was a monastery. The rooms themselves are adequate in size whilst the bathrooms are fairly spacious. Service with a smile from friendly staff, breakfast is what you we would expect at most hotels. All in all a wonderful stay at a beautiful hotel complemented with friendly staff.
