This is a beautiful property, but service is not up to standard. This is reflected in their 2.5/5 rating on Bonvoy. Some examples: - hotel entrance is almost impossible to find and sign is laughably small. Concierge talked to our driver in the street and we still missed the entrance. - check-in is slow and cumbersome, literally 20-25 minutes, when 5-10 would suffice. Am dreading the check-out. - asked concierge for Nara restaurant suggestions. Got deer in the headlights look and asked about our priorities and told us everything was closed. Asked for Kyoto suggestions; similar useless response. - in-room dining is limited, so we ordered some food delivery via Uber Eats. Asked front desk to accept our delivery (not bring it to our room, just accept it for us). We were told it wasn’t possible with no explanation (I guess they think making these deliveries more of a hassle will increase room service revenue - it will also increase customer inconvenience). Night desk clerk was not friendly or pleasant to deal with. Room service prices are also astronomical with tiny portions. - asked for foam pillows. Feather pillows were causing allergic reaction. Answer was no, they are all in use. - there are literally almost no places to sit, while waiting for a taxi. Is a bench so hard? - finished breakfast. Some kind of film crew shows up (10:30am); everyone tip-toeing around them. Paying guests being inconvenienced trying to come and go. - “Luxury” service is all about anticipating guest needs and helping them. One very bright spot was Evisa. She saw our taxi driver seeming confused, ran down the driveway and outside to translate and help us, without being asked. She was helpful with a very positive attitude. She could teach the rest of the staff excellent customer service.

I researched a ridiculously long time to find a comfortable authentic ryokan experience in Nara so we could enjoy a more relaxed time in Nara as a family vs just a typical day trip. My husband was VERY reluctant to spend such a large amount on a one night stay where we'd be sleeping on the floor in the room with the kids but I assured him this was a not-to-miss experience, and for the price it was definitely going to be a comfortable night sleep on the floor with lots of padding under the futon mattresses. I was wrong. Not only did it feel like camping out on a hard floor, but the rice paper on the windows did absolutely nothing to block out the bright streetlight outside the window. Between the hard floor and the bright street light glaring into the room, it was a very uncomfortable night of sleep, to say the least. ”Don't worry, this will be an unforgettable Japanese kaiseki meal! It's worth paying so much!” Again, inwas wrong. While the staff was incredibly thoughtful with any pre-discussed food options, and the service was delightful, the food was hit or miss. Some courses were lovely, both as a piece of art in their presentation and also delicious! But aggressively overcooking fish and seafood is just beyond unacceptable. Also, I was disappointed to discover that dinner was served in the dining room, not in our private room, as I had assumed. We chose the western option for breakfast. It was pretty terrible, I have to admit. Perhaps we should have opted for the Japanese option in retrospect. I thought my kids would be more likely to eat a western breakfast, but it just wasn't good. Cold eggs, chicken nuggets, stale bread. One of my daughters and I briefly enjoyed the small public onsen inside the inn and that was nice! I feel bad writing a poor review because I REALLY wanted to love this place, and the staff is very warm, thoughtful, and caring. But with the disappointing food and uncomfortable night's sleep, I just can't recommend staying here for the amount of money we spent. Not the splurge-worthy experience I was hoping for, sadly.

The hotel is just opposite the kofuku-ji temple, with a beautiful window view of the five story pagoda from our room. Although it is near the attraction, it is quiet at night. Location is 5 mins walk away from station.

Hotel with an excellent location next to Nara Park. There is a small kitchen on the floor. The room (dormitory) has a toilet and two showers. There are also showers and toilets on the floor. The bed is normal, but the bed linen is very rough and when someone moves you can hear it a lot.

After some brief confusion at the start during check in everything was perfect. We booked a room with a bath and that was lovely to relax in. Great food and service.
