Don Q Inn

We went to Don Q Inn as part of a quirky weekend adventure; we really enjoyed our stay there. It was easy to find since there is a full-size military cargo plane parked in the yard which you can actually go in to and sit in the pilot's seat! We stayed in a regular double; the rooms are dated but they are huge, clean, and the beds were comfortable. They do also offer Fantasy Suites which would be a fun option for couples. The hot tub was very relaxing, and the pool is very nice offering indoor and outdoor swimming. The lobby is very unique with antique barber chairs surrounding a huge fireplace. There is a huge checker table, cribbage board and TV in the lobby and foosball, bumper pool and a pool table on the second floor for added fun. Breakfast was good each morning offering waffles, sausage, biscuits and gravy, bagels or toast, hard boiled eggs, oatmeal or cereal. All of the staff at Don Q were very friendly, always smiling and taking the time to talk to us making us feel very welcomed. Our only disappointments were 1) there are no restaurants nearby nor pizza delivery and 2) the underground tunnel was closed. We spoke with staff about this and were told that they are currently working on the tunnel and hope to have it re-opened next year. They are also working with the city to obtain a liquor license so that they can have a bar in the tunnel. I think re-opening the tunnel and having a bar, with pizza options at least, would really add to the appeal for Don Q Inn. There are a lot of things to do short distances away from the Don Q Inn; we went to House on the Rock, Cave of the Mounds, and Mt Horeb to do the "Troll Tour". We did a one night getaway midweek and stayed in one of the fantasy suites. Yes, the place is older, but the hotel and our room were clean and in decent shape. The staff was very nice. The breakfast was about what you expect from a continental type, but it was pretty good and enough for us. Governor Dodge State Park is just up the road and restaurants are just a few minutes away. Yes, we will go there again.

This place really needs some TLC. The rooms are very dilapidated and have a stale odor. Luckily, I was able to open a window. Only one station worked on the television. The presumed owner was very friendly. Fortunately, I only stayed for one night.

We have stayed at the Don Q Inn for the second year in a row. It is conveniently located near Governor Dodge State Park and The House on the Rock. There is ample parking, it is quiet and in a good location. It is an older hotel, but clean and very reasonably priced. There is hot coffee available 24 hours a day and a morning breakfast for the guests. The staff is friendly, and it has a family-business vibe. We visit to tour the House on the Rock. We came back for The Dark Side, their Halloween attraction, which we highly recommend. Thank you to the staff at the Don Q and we appreciate all you do to make our stay the best.

We booked a king room and paid for it accordingly ahead of time. When we checked in and got to our room, we were given what they call a double queen room, but it was a double full room, not the king we paid for. When we asked they said they only had 2 king rooms and both were booked. The room itself was something out of the 1970s wall paper, carpet with one of those mustard yellow bathtub/showers. The beds were hanging off of the box springs causing the sides to be extremely soft to the point of falling off the bed. The decor lacked any updating. The continental breakfast, thankful that they offered it, but it was sub par and very basic. However, many said the waffles were very good. The pool is not heated and it was shared with the parts outside. The hot tub was small, but warm. As adults you like to drink adult beverages in the pool area. We were yelled at and our drinks taken away and the only sign posted was no glass. When check out time came, I asked for my receipt. They had changed the room to dbl queen on the final receipt which was not represented on the first and no discount in price or other accommodations from the lack of not giving us what we reserved. Safe to say, we won't be back there.

So disappointed. Booked our stay based on reviews that the hotel was a must see - which in its glory days, might have been true. We stayed in room 216. The carpet was disgusting - we kept our socks and shoes on during the entire visit. Drapes had what looked like bed bugs on them. Heater was busted and super loud. Tv was so quiet (volume didn’t work). Bathroom was disgusting - shower was the worst. Wallpaper stained and dated. Spoke to the staff at the front desk and they didn’t seem very surprised. Disappointing to see nobody cares enough about this place to clean it up and bring it back to its old glory. Seriously - avoid it.

Please don't stay here. The location was good and my bed was comfortable and clean. My hot tub was not working, air conditioning was noisy, carpet and decor was dated and disgusting. I was not impressed by the breakfast. My friend stayed in the basement. We walked down the hallway and either something died down there or they used the most disgusting smelling cleaning products ever. I had to hold my breath. The shower is not in the bathroom but in the hot tub in his room. Never again.

Yes it is dated but hands down the best staff!! This is a quirky, off beat place. The owners are A+, very hospitable. Totally chill atmosphere. The pool was nice. Staff was always “cleaning.” Prompt and courteous. Thank you for a wonderful stay!

I get the sense the glory days of the Don Q are long gone. It appears to mostly be a shell of what was once a very unique and funky hotel. I stayed in one of the moon rooms. While the theming is pretty cool, the room had a dirty and musty feel to it - this is especially a concern in these sorts of "couples" hotels. There's a lot of exposed wiring which may or may not be a hazard. There is also an abundance of remotes which occasionally work. It appears one was for a star projector which no longer works. The hotel feels generally understaffed, which may contribute to its unclean and poor maintenance motif. There is light breakfast served in the morning. The bomber plane outside seems to have a bunch of birds living and pooping in it. It is definitely unique, but I'd probably steer elsewhere unless they get new management.
