Hello geng ✋, I’m a fellow Malaysian who just came back from Shanghai, and let me tell you… the Shanghai Metro is a game changer for traveling around the city. 🚇
At first, I thought it would be complicated (Shanghai is huge compared to KL 🤯), but once you get the hang of it, the metro is cheap, fast, clean, and super convenient. Here’s my full guide so you won’t get lost when you come!
🗺️ 1. Shanghai Metro Map 2025

Source from Wikipedia
The Shanghai Metro is one of the world’s largest 🚇 — with 20+ lines and 500+ stations! In 2025, it covers almost every corner of the city.
👉 Pro tip: Download the official Shanghai Metro app or just use Gaode Maps (高德地图) — both apps have the updated map, train timings, and route planning.
(Imagine a giant colorful map like the LRT + MRT in KL… but 10x more complex 😂)

🚆 2. List of Shanghai Metro Lines & Stations

Some of the main lines you’ll definitely use as a tourist:
- Line 2 (Green) – The most important for us tourists! Goes to Pudong Airport, Lujiazui (Oriental Pearl Tower), People’s Square, Nanjing Road, Hongqiao Airport & Railway Station.
- Line 10 (Purple) – Great for Yu Garden, Xintiandi, and Shanghai Zoo.
- Line 11 (Brown) – The line you’ll take to Shanghai Disneyland 🎢✨.
- Line 1 (Red) – Runs north-south, stopping at People’s Square, Xujiahui (big shopping area).
Honestly, you don’t need to memorize all lines — just know your destination, and apps like Baidu Maps or Gaode will guide you.

Major Shanghai Metro Stations
- People's Square is our busiest station - it's where Lines 1, 2, and 8 meet. Think of it as Shanghai's Times Square! From here, you can visit People's Park, the Shanghai Museum, and tons of shopping malls.
- Xujiahui (Lines 1, 9, and 11) is another major hub. It's surrounded by huge shopping malls and electronics markets. If you're looking for gadgets or want to experience modern Shanghai, this is your stop.
- For culture lovers, get off at Yuyuan Garden station (Line 10) to see Old Shanghai, or Jing'an Temple (Lines 2/7) for one of the city's most famous temples surrounded by luxury malls.
- Take Line 2 to Lujiazui. This is where you'll find the Shanghai Tower, Oriental Pearl Tower, and the World Financial Center - basically, all those buildings you see in Shanghai postcards!
- Pro tip: If you're heading to Shanghai Disneyland, take Line 11 to the Disney Resort station. It's a direct ride and the stations are even decorated with Disney themes!

🧭 3. How to Use Shanghai Metro

① Find the Metro Entrance
- Look for the big red “M” sign (地铁 / Metro).
- Entrances are usually near main roads, shopping malls, or railway stations.
- Each station has multiple exits (A, B, C, D, etc.) — check which one is closest to your destination.
② Buy a Ticket or Tap In
You have 3 options (choose one):
- Single Journey Ticket 🎟️
- Use the touchscreen machines (English available).
- Select your destination → pay in cash/coins → get a small green ticket.
- Keep it with you until you exit.
- Metro Card (交通卡) 💳
- Buy at the service counter. Deposit RMB 20, then top up.
- Just tap in & out — no need to queue for tickets each time.
- QR Code 📱
- If you have Alipay or WeChat Pay, just open the Metro QR code and scan at the gate.
- This is the fastest method (locals use it all the time).

③ Enter the Station
- Tap your card/scan QR/insert ticket at the entry gate.
- The gate will open, and you walk through.
- 🚨 If you use a paper ticket, keep it until you exit — you’ll need to insert it again at your destination.
④ Find Your Line & Direction
- Follow the colored signs (each line has a unique color & number).
- Look for the final station name on that line — this tells you which direction the train is going.
- Example: If you’re going from People’s Square → Lujiazui on Line 2, follow the signs for Line 2 towards Pudong International Airport.
- Don’t worry: all signs are in Chinese + English.
⑤ On the Platform
- Wait behind the yellow safety line.
- Trains usually arrive every 3–5 minutes.
- When doors open: let passengers exit first 🚶🚶, then enter.
- Pro tip: Avoid rush hours (7–9 AM, 5–7 PM) — it can get really packed 😅.

⑥ Inside the Train
- Announcements are made in Chinese + English.
- Digital screens show the next stop.
- Seats are usually taken fast, but don’t worry — rides are not too long.
- Keep your belongings close, but generally the metro is very safe.

⑦ Exiting the Metro
- Follow exit signs (e.g. Exit 1, Exit 2, Exit 3).
- Tap your card/scan QR/insert ticket at the exit gate.
- If you’re using a paper ticket, it will be “swallowed” by the machine when you leave.
🙋 Pro Tips from My Experience
- Plan with apps: Use Gaode Maps (高德地图) or Baidu Maps to check routes. Both apps work like Google Maps but better for China.
- Carry small change if you’re buying single tickets (machines don’t always take big notes).
- Look at exit maps inside the station — they show which exit leads to which street/building (very helpful for big stations like People’s Square).
- If lost, just ask: Many young Shanghainese can speak some English, and metro staff are usually friendly.

🔄 4. Shanghai Metro Transfer Guide

Sometimes you’ll need to change lines, like from Line 2 → Line 11 for Disneyland.
- Just follow the Transfer (换乘) signs inside the station.
- Be ready to walk a bit — some transfers are like a mini workout (looking at you, People’s Square 😅).
- Don’t worry, everything is in Chinese + English, and announcements are bilingual.

You’ve got 3 easy options:
Single Journey Ticket 🎟️
Buy from machine or counter. Insert into gate, then keep until exit.

Shanghai Public Transport Card (交通卡) 💳
Like our Touch ’n Go. Reloadable, works for metro, bus, and even some taxis.
Deposit RMB 20, then top up as you like.

Mobile QR Code 📱
If you have Alipay or WeChat Pay, just scan at the gate.
Super convenient (my favorite way!).

💰 6. Shanghai Metro Ticket Price

So murah compared to Malaysia 😍
- Base fare: RMB 3 (~RM 2) for the first 6 km.
- Max fare: RMB 10 (~RM 6.50) even for long rides (like from Pudong Airport to city center).
For tourists staying 4–5 days, I recommend getting the Metro Card — saves time queuing.

- Last trains: Around 10:30–11:30 PM.

For Malaysians planning a trip, don’t be scared of the Shanghai Metro. It’s way more advanced than our LRT/MRT, but also more tourist-friendly. With a map app, a metro card, and a little sense of adventure, you can explore the whole city like a pro.
I swear, once you get used to it, you’ll feel like a local zipping through Shanghai 🚇✨.
