The Japanese rooms are almost to small to house two people with luggage, mattresses very thin, no Aircon available (only air clean). Room was run-down, the entire hotel is in dire need for make-over. It surely has seen better days. Therefore, it is overpriced. On the plus side: Food was good and so was the Onsen. But one would find similar Onsen standards nearby, in fact, next door. The nicely sized swimming pool closes at 5pm, can’t tell it’s quality. Massage service available, good service.

Very beautiful place and had buses going directly to it. Gave free admission to the onsen opposite with free rental of robes and swimwear as well. Very nice stay in general.
However staff was quite cold. They didn't even have a shoe dehumidifier like other budget hotels, which was surprising given its price point. The free buffet food was actually one of the worst tasting food I've ever had in the whole Japan. So I guess it depends on what you prioritise.

GGlobal33342712812I was seeking a ryokan with private onsens and the willingness to accommodate my primarily vegetarian dietary habits. I chose Hakone Gora Byakudan and was extremely pleased in every single way. We were a little on the early side (around 2:00 in the afternoon) when we asked someone at an information desk by Gora Station to please call the ryokan and ask if they could pick us up (as we had been instructed). Within 5 minutes we were picked up and brought to the beautiful ryokan, removing our shoes upon entry. The room was fantastic. We were in ”hako”, just off the lobby. The space was perfect! And we loved the privacy of the onsen. Both dinner and breakfast were served in a small private dining room. They indeed served me a vegetarian meal with many courses. My husband had some meat or fish in his meal and they provided us each with separate printed out menus. It was truly fantastic!
PPengguna TetamuHad a large Japanese style room on the fifth floor. The place is characterful and the onsens feel original and charming. Being in our 60's futons and dining on the floor was probably not the best choice. There is no restaurant or bar so you dine in your room. There are a lot of courses, maybe 10, for both breakfast and dinner served in batches of about 3 at a time. We really enjoyed dinner the first night but less so the second - there is no choice so the individual dishes are to your taste or not. We didn't enjoy breakfast which is more like a small meal and not to our taste. The building is up on the side of a hill and the whole area in very hilly so not easily walkable. We had a car and went on the cablecar up to the lake.
PPengguna TetamuWe got this very large suite that was in the CONDO complex. It is outside of the main building but there are walkways in the back that allow transverse with the key. That said, it was incredibly comfortable. The beds were plush and comfy. Spring bath was soothing. The suite was HUGE!! There was a large sitting area as well as a patio. The entire place never felt crowded even though people were always checking in. I did not see anyone the entire time while walking around except during mealtime and the dessert hour. We signed up for both dinner and breakfast because we weren’t too keen on looking for a restaurant. It was the best decision because the food was very fresh and varied (although focused on Japanese more). It was buffet style with an extra personalized item that you get to order. Dessert was generous and there was a small bar to mix one’s own drinks. Afterwards, there is a dessert-beer-coffee bar that was just wonderful. It was like a mixer. The onsen was nice. We ended up doing only the private onsen and it was available both times. We also had the bath in the suite. Everything felt super clean and immaculate. The hosts and reception personnel were nice and friendly throughout. Check-in and check-out was quick and seamless. It is about 5 minutes’ walk from the GORA train station. There are lots of bus in the main street downstairs.
PPengguna TetamuWe stayed at the Hakone Hotel as part of a tour group. We had a spacious twin room with a view over the garden and part of Lake Ashi. The room spotlessly clean and was very comfortable. We had a comfortable chair and a comfortable 2 seater couch as well as comfortable beds. In the morning we had a beautiful clear view of Mt Fuji from the grounds of the hotel. We had a delicious included dinner at the hotel as well as a good buffet breakfast. There was a capsule coffee/tea maker in the room that I tried with Earl Grey Tea which was a bit strong for my taste.
CCoolkieeesAbsolutely love the shower area!
Amenities were comprehensive and environment was very chill and relaxing
Nothing much to shop nearby, great for outside urban life seekers for a 1-2 nights stay!
PPengguna TetamuFirst time in Hakone but not in Japan. Perfect choice! We were a family with a toddler, and the ryokan will be not a proper place for a child to be or enjoy the traditional setting. Green Plaza was a nice cross between ryokan ( we got a tatami room) but had the convince of buffets for breakfast and dinner. We enjoyed it all. Great choices for food, Eastern and Western. Local salmon was to die for, but pasta and pizza were solid as well. The room was big enough and we had a pleasure of viewing Fuji-san from out window. There is a store inside the hotel and you can get supplies and water/ beer for reasonable price. Not far from a ropeway station Ubako but we rented a car and it was a great idea to save time if you want sightseeing. Onsens were awesome and open late. Everything was clean! Overall, highly recommend, especially if you are not ready to commit to a traditional ryokan and picky with food or have kids. Would love to come back and explore the area more
WWY8888Homely, Comfortable and clean environment as all guests are required to take off their shoes at the entrance. Room is spacious and child friendly, my 1.5 year old can roam around without us worrying of hazard. Nice breakfast too. More convenient if you are self driving
CCyphExcellent accommodation and the location is to die for if MtFuji and the lake is what you’re looking for. A very quiet area in the morning and at night when the tour buses are gone.
For those looking to book, here are a few tips we found out to help you out. There’s no receptionist so you will have to figure out how to get in so do not walk on the street side but walk over to the lake side and enter. Otherwise if you enter from the street side, the first pin pad you see is the wrong one. If it’s in front of the door marked “private” then the door code won’t work. Walk around to the front and look for glass doors. That’s where you can enter your door code.
The onsen water is extremely hot. Maybe that’s how onsen works but I couldn’t stay for more than 5 minutes as I got dizzy. The loft area is low ceilings but my kids loved sleeping there. However the food here isn’t great so plan accordingly. The 7-11 close by has great snacks.
If I ever return to Hakone I would stay here again.
PPengguna TetamuWe booked Hakone Airu under the expectation of taking part in an 'experience' and wanted to embrace all that we would be offered. Primarily, we were looking for a place to stay in the Hakone area with a private onsen and reasonably close to transport links. Hakone Airu delivered in all of these aspects and was a fantastic spot from which we could make use of the Hakone pass and explore the region. Directions upon booking were clear and advised taking a bus or taxi from the train station but we opted to walk the 15 minutes and take in the local shops. While the final stretch does climb uphill, if you are reasonably fit, it shouldn't be a problem. Check-in was very welcoming and after complimentary drinks, we were shown to our room which was perfect. The outside area with private onsen and views of the surrounding hills was divine and we enjoyed spending evenings 'soaking' in the atmosphere both figuratively and literally. This ticked every box in achieving the relaxing onsen experience we were looking for. Meals were plentiful. Breakfast was fit for a king and the western menu (with a Japanese nod) set us up for each day with full and satisfied stomachs. The evening meal was 'Kaiseki' which, as defined by Google, is ”a traditional multi-course Japanese dinner. The term also refers to the collection of skills and techniques that allow the preparation of such meals”. It is akin to a 'tasting menu' that you might expect in more elaborate Western restaurants. With that in mind, we fully expected a range of textures, tastes, colours and presentation that could challenge our palates. The meal did exactly that. Over ten, superbly presented courses, we sampled a range of meats, seafood and clever vegetable twists that both delighted and challenged our expectations. The Sashimi was a particular highlight along with the cleverly designed corn dish! A turban sea snail added to the adventure and is a great example of how the menu can push your expectations by providing foods you may not ordinarily opt for. Impressively, the menu was different each night and a delight to sample. Throughout our stay, the staff were outstanding: courteous, polite, helpful and went out of their way to accommodate. Thank you. We arrived at Hakone Airu with high hopes; these were achieved in every aspect. I would love to visit again and recommend it to anyone who is open to embracing everything on offer.
