Ohope Beach Motel

We had stayed here a few times before over the last nine years. This trip we booked through wotif. We arrived and were taken down the back to what I can only discribe as a converted garage that looked out from the bedroom onto a bank. The woman told us it was the family suite but as there were only the two of us... She locked the extra room. I wasn't happy, it was not the queen studio we had had in the past, the same as the pictures we had seen on the site. She told us we got the grotty by comparison room because we booked through *******! She told my husband she could see I wasn't happy but we could have the room I believed I was booking if we paid MORE. I said forget it. We unloaded into the room, I was fuming, then she turned up & told us she had done some juggling and we could have the queen suite at no extra cost... Probably long enough to see my other reviews. She lied, she told us we were in the family suite & when I said I booked a queen suite she said it was a queen suite. She said they were fully booked but managed to juggle things so we could have the other room. Rubbish, the no vacancy sign never went on in all the time we were there & the grotty room wasn't used, there were other queen suites not used & yes we checked. We went out & our room was entered and a window that could be easily accessed from outside was opened risking our belongings, the only "servicing" that was done was the rubbish bag that had a couple of things in it was removed. The price has dam near doubled since our first stay but apart from converting a garage nothing has been done. The lounge chairs were dirty. Don't bother. It's 6km to Whakatane, stay there.

I just can’t relate to a few of the very old poor reviews of this place. This is very basic accommodation done very well indeed. It’s spotlessly clean, very well maintained and looks to be recently refurbished and decorated. The pictures don’t do this place justice. It’s comfortable and affordable and cross the very quite road and your on one of the best beaches in the world. I’d happily spend a week here, it’s party trick is it actually has everything you need for a few days by the sea. We stayed as part of our tour of NZ and this place exceeded expectations. Simply furnished but still with a small kitchen tv, comfortable bed washing line and arm chairs and a simple check in, I’m all in. It exceeded expectations and you can park right outside, a brilliant concept.

This stay was so amazing. Affordable, great location, awesome hosts/owners. Owners/staff were really hospitable, the room was really clean and beds were comfortable. We fit 5 people in a single unit but could fit another person if we wanted. Checking in and checking out was very easy. Loved this place and got to watch the sunrise in the morning as the beach is a 2 minute walk away. Would definitely recommend for families. Also, locals are very friendly as well. There is Sky and Netflix for entertainment. Looking forward to staying here again in future 😊

I do not care if there’s a tiny bathroom. I do not care if there’s a little bit that looks worn. I want to stay here again and again. We will reminisce about this stay for weeks to come. We were in unit 1–facing the beach and with its own private drive. It was heaven. We slept listening to the waves, we cooked our own breakfasts in the cute little kitchen, we walked across to the picnic tables overlooking the ocean and shared a bottle of wine, and we truly believe we spent two nights at the best beach on earth. There’s free boogie boards, laundry facilities (in unit one they are in-house), a full sized fridge, and comfy beds. For a family of three, our unit and our experience was just perfect.

We loved our stay here. Checking in was very simple. The rooms were clean and tidy with a lovely decor. The beds comfortable and we slept very well! The location is a gem with a lovely seating area on the beach.

What a find. Didn’t book just rocked up and greeted by the wonderful Wanda. She was so welcoming and helpful. The rooms were comfortable and the beds were amazing. We were right opposite the beautiful beach with our very own chairs and fire pit which was only for the Motel visitors. Such a lovely way to spend watching the sunset with a glass of NZ Pinot Gris. Wanda popped over for a chat while enjoying the fire. Not a lot of eating places but just a 5min drive over the mountain to Whakatane there were lots of choices. Such a wonderful stay.
