We’ve just returned from Dali, and the place we keep thinking about most is this hidden gem at the foot of Cangshan Mountain — Mutian Time Designer Guesthouse.
Oriental aesthetics in every corner
The guesthouse is converted from a century-old traditional Bai courtyard house. With its grey-tiled roofs, white walls, and beautifully carved wooden structures, the space carries a quiet sense of history and elegance. The courtyard features water elements, stone paths, and blue and yellow lanterns that create beautiful layers of light and shadow during the day. At night, the soft lighting outlines the architecture and gives the entire space a warm, cinematic atmosphere.
The common areas are equally charming, with a stone-built fireplace, vintage furniture, and art pieces thoughtfully placed throughout. The design blends traditional Eastern aesthetics with modern touches, creating a space that feels both timeless and refined.
Comfort with thoughtful details
Our room was spacious, bright, and very comfortable. A stone feature wall behind the bed, paired with soft bedding and warm lighting, created a subtle sense of “wild luxury” while still feeling cosy and relaxed. Opening the window reveals the courtyard view — waking up to birdsong in the morning and watching the lanterns glow in the evening adds a special charm to the stay.
Warm and attentive service
From booking to check-out, the hosts were welcoming and attentive. Upon arrival, they introduced the history of the house and highlighted the design features of the property, and were happy to recommend nearby restaurants and local spots to explore.
The afternoon tea was beautifully presented, with fresh fruit and delicate snacks — perfect for enjoying a slow afternoon in the courtyard. Breakfast included some local Bai-style flavours, simple yet delicious, and a lovely way to start the day.
A peaceful location near the old town
The guesthouse is tucked away in Zhongyin Village at the foot of Cangshan Mountain, about a 15-minute drive from Dali Ancient Town. It offers a quiet retreat away from the crowds while still being conveniently close to the main attractions. Surrounded by village life and forested hills, the air feels fresh and full of the scent of nature.
More than just a place to stay, Mutian Time feels like a living piece of art. It brought a sense of calm and poetry to our trip to Dali. If you’re looking to experience the slower, more peaceful side of Dali, this is definitely a place worth staying.

From the moment we arrived, we received such a warm and genuine welcome from the host and his family, making us feel right at home immediately. Our bedroom was impressively spacious and kept perfectly clean throughout our visit. The highlight, however, was the spectacular view; waking up to a panoramic vista of both the city and the lake was truly unforgettable. What really set this place apart was the exceptional hospitality. The host took care of us from the beginning until the very end of our stay, going above and beyond by even personally taking us to the bus stop when it was time to leave. PPengguna TetamuThis stay is the best ever. Not only is the guesthouse clean and beautifully located right across from Erhai Lake. But what impressed me most was the hospitality and service—especially from Joy. From picking us up at the train station, to helping us arrange an EV bike rental (even though we eventually decided not to), to personally taking us to dinner and recommending dishes, trusting us with her dog Hamburg, and specially arranging for us to be dropped off at the station when we left even though she was busy with work. Joy made sure everything was well taken care of. She is a true asset to the guesthouse: friendly, sincere in her kind gestures without expecting anything in return, helpful, and genuinely welcoming. What we admire most is that Joy treats her dog as a family member. She is truly a person filled with loving kindness and will always be blessed for this.
The part we appreciated most was getting to spend quality time with her dog, Hamburg, who brought us so much happiness and filled our days with joy. Hamburg is a loving dog with a heart of gold. Anyone especially dog lovers would truly fall in love with him. Together, Joy and Hamburg make the best combination. They brought smiles and joy to us. They are the real assets of the place. We hope they will be greatly rewarded.
Thank you, Joy, for giving us the best souvenir in China—Hamburg's most loved toy. This is the best gift ever! And thank you for keeping in touch with us whenever you can, including sharing updates on Hamburg. It means a lot to us.😊
Great hospitality was also shown by others on the team. Miki served us breakfast every morning with a smile and was always at the reception keeping Hamburg company. She not only looks after him but also make sure he is in good hands, safe and happily running about. Miki carried Hamburg to bid us farewell. She also updated us on Hamburg's progress daily, which we greatly appreciated. knowing that he is happy made us happy.👍
Most importantly, the owner, Krystina, made us feel at home and welcomed. She has a warm personality, is friendly, and treats her staff like family. She is also in the midst of learning English for self-improvement. She has the willingness to learn and the kind of down-to-earth attitude that most hotel owners don't. We felt comfortable being with her, and she even hosted a farewell dinner for us. What we love most is that she is an animal lover and even included Hamburg in the dinner. She has a heart full of compassion. We had a great time together, and the night ended with smiles and laughter. We started as strangers but ended as friends.🙂
We were reluctant to leave after three nights, and if given the chance, we would love to extend our stay to a week in the future. This place is truly a gem, thanks to the wonderful management and the people behind it. We will surely recommend friends to your guesthouse—it is a gem hidden in Dali.

However, we were slightly surprised to see that the room we had booked was quite compact. It was fine for us, but to might want to check the area before booking for two people.
Another point of attention, everything in the bathroom worked perfectly fine, but the lack of intimacy (practically see-through glass walls coupled with a thin netting) could be an issue for some people. This is, of course, left to individual preference.

The property is situated among preserved buildings that share the same traditional architectural design, making you feel as though you’ve traveled back in time to the olden days. It’s a perfect blend of history and comfort.
Mr. Wang, the gentleman who manages the place, is incredibly friendly and helpful. He went out of his way to provide excellent advice on where to visit in Dali, which made my trip even more enjoyable.
Overall, this is a hidden gem that offers a unique experience, combining traditional aesthetics with warm hospitality. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a peaceful and memorable stay in Dali!

JJas LWe chose this hotel specifically for the aquarium rooms, and it did not disappoint. The view of the marine life—including sharks and stingrays—is incredible and very well-maintained. While the location is less convenient for general sightseeing, it’s the perfect destination if the aquarium is your priority.
The facilities are very clean, though the toilet area is quite cramped; I could feel my knees touching the door. Despite that, the unique experience and friendly staff make this a worthwhile recommendation for families or ocean lovers!
