This is a perfect spot in Nagano if you want to take a break before heading to other parts such as Hakuba for skiing . It is literally right at the station and connected via MIDORI where you can buy groceries and with lots of restaurants.
Due to fight delay, we arrived late at night at around 10pm. MIDORI shops were all closed but ht path to hotel still open and we can still find plenty of cafes nearby.
It has reserved Alpico bus to Hakuba right at hotel or you may go to the regular bus stop at bus station 26 for higher frequency of bus service.
Will definitely stay here again if we need to stop over at Nagano. Though the hotel is not new, it’s spacious and clean enough for a comfortable stay .
Tokyu Rei hotel is conveniently located right across the street from Nagano station. The rooms are of a good enough size for a short stay for a couple, single, or family with young kids. The beds are comfortable and the room clean. If staying a night or two to experience the Snow Monkey Park and the city of Nagano and it's surroundings, it's a good option. It's within walking distance of Zenjiko shrine, which is large and free to enter. The station is right across the street and offers many restaurants and a grocery store. For convenience, it's a good option.
Comfortable spacious room with nice amenities and professional service. Great location near to the bus and train station, and within walking distances to the castle.
Too bad i didn’t have time to try the onsen.
Great Stay at Hotel Courtland, Matsumoto!
Just wanted to drop a quick review for Hotel Courtland in Matsumoto—what a pleasant find!
The location is absolutely fantastic. Seriously, it's about a 5-minute, worry-free walk from the station. This was a huge plus, especially since we had luggage; no need to struggle or look for a taxi. Adding to the value, the price at the time of booking was very cheap, making this a fantastic deal!
As for the hotel itself, I have to say, it's exceptionally clean. Like, super clean. It made our stay feel very comfortable and relaxing.
What really stood out was the amazing hospitality. We arrived after a 4-hour ride from Tokyo and were pretty frozen from the winter shock. The staff kindly offered us a free early check-in, which was incredibly thoughtful and exactly what we needed to warm up and refresh. It really saved the day!
We didn't get a chance to try the breakfast this time, but based on everything else, I imagine it's great too.
Highly recommend this hotel if you're ever in Matsumoto!
The hotel is nice, from the station about 10 minutes walk almost in a straight line, wake up. The room was originally wrong, it was reserved for smokers, even though we don't smoke, the room was given the appropriate one, the smell in it was just not very good, like for those who don't smoke at all, it started already on the floor. But the staff, fortunately, were able to find us a replacement for a non-smoking room, yes, less, yes one big bed instead of two, but with stunning mountain views and a coffee machine. The breakfast at the hotel is just as great, the cuisine is Japanese, diverse, there are many drinks, including fresh juices, many desserts.
non-smoking measures, yes, less, but one large bed instead of two, but with stunning mountain views and a coffee machine
We stayed at this hotel in Nagano as a family of three for two nights. The location was very convenient, with the MRT and bus station just nearby, making it easy to get to Snow Monkey Park and other areas. The service was fine—nothing extravagant, but acceptable and efficient.
One downside was that the toilet had a slightly unpleasant smell, which could be improved. There is a 7-Eleven close to the hotel, which was handy, but for good local food, you’ll need to walk a bit farther, as most of the eateries are located on the other side of the hotel.
Overall, our stay was enjoyable, and we have no major complaints since we didn’t spend much time in the hotel itself. It’s a decent option if you’re mainly looking for accessibility and convenience while exploring Nagano.
I love Dormy Inn. Price is right, location is always near to JR and most have Onsen facilities. Great for solo travellers and couples! This hotel has all you need in terms of toiletries- collectable at the reception. The Nagano Hotel is located right next to a 7-11! Just across from the JR Nagano Zenkoji exit.
We stayed for one night just as a cheap place during our short stop in Nagano to visit the Snow Monkeys. It was better than we expected - clean, convenient, and friendly.
The complimentary breakfast was like a generic buffet, serving mostly daily Japanese food. Not everything was to my liking but I didn’t mind that.
Even though I unintentionally booked a smoking room, and there were no more non-smoking rooms available, the room we got had no lingering bad smell.
Nice budget hotel!
Perfectly located at Nagano station - connected by walkway bridge with Don Quijote just a few steps away.
The staff at front desk were fantastic, always smiling and proactive too! The room is a littler dated but more than comfortable for the night. Amenities at lobby were good enough to get by too, PJs provided at each room floor.
Good stopover if you are going for a day trip to the Snow Monkey Park.
Booked a room here for 1 day just to explore matsumoto. this hotel was a pretty good distance to walk to the tourist attraction such as the matsumoto castle and nawate shopping street. loved that they offered free icecream or ramen between 8:00-10:00 pm. If you ever check out and you still have time before your bus leaves, you can also ask front desk to keep your luggage so you can be luggage free exploring. they were super kind and understanding with all the requests we had.

CCiav BenhonianStaying at Shoho in Matsumoto was an unforgettable experience that truly deserves five stars. Nestled amidst the serene landscapes of Nagano Prefecture, this hotel seamlessly blends traditional Japanese elegance with modern luxury. From the moment we stepped into the lobby, we were enveloped by a warm and inviting ambiance that set the tone for the rest of our stay.
Our room was a perfect sanctuary—spacious, meticulously clean, and adorned with subtle touches of Japanese artistry. The panoramic views of the Japanese Alps from our window were nothing short of breathtaking, especially when the mountains were bathed in the soft glow of sunrise. The traditional tatami flooring and comfortable futon bedding provided an authentic experience without sacrificing comfort.
One of the standout features of Shoho is its exceptional onsen facilities. Soaking in the natural hot springs while gazing at the picturesque scenery was incredibly rejuvenating. The rotenburo (outdoor bath) offered a tranquil escape where the stresses of daily life simply melted away. The hotel's attention to detail extended to these spaces, with beautifully crafted woodwork and stone elements enhancing the overall atmosphere.
Culinary delights awaited us at every meal. The kaiseki dinner was a masterpiece—a multi-course feast that highlighted seasonal and local ingredients. Each dish was artfully presented and demonstrated a profound respect for Japanese culinary traditions. The breakfast buffet was equally impressive, offering a wide array of both Japanese and Western options to suit all palates.
The staff at Shoho went above and beyond to ensure our stay was exceptional. Their genuine hospitality was evident in every interaction, from assisting with our luggage to offering insightful recommendations on local attractions. Despite any language barriers, their kindness and professionalism shone through.
The hotel's location is ideal for exploring the rich cultural heritage of Matsumoto. We were just a short drive from the iconic Matsumoto Castle, one of Japan's most beautiful original castles. Strolling through the historic Nakamachi Street with its classic white-walled storehouses turned boutique shops and cafes was a delightful way to spend an afternoon.
In addition to its proximity to cultural sites, Shoho serves as a great base for nature enthusiasts. The nearby Kamikochi Valley offers stunning hiking trails that showcase the unspoiled beauty of the Japanese Alps. Returning to the comfort of the hotel after a day of exploration was something we looked forward to, especially knowing a soothing onsen soak awaited us.
In summary, Shoho encapsulates the essence of Japanese hospitality. Every aspect of our stay was thoughtfully curated to provide comfort, relaxation, and cultural enrichment. We left feeling deeply refreshed and with a greater appreciation for the wonders of Matsumoto. Shoho is more than just a place to stay—it's an experience that lingers long after you've departed. We wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone seeking an authentic and luxurious retreat in Japan.
GGuest UserThis is our first time to ski Japan. This hotel was located perfectly with great access to some super beginning facilities. Good enough about skiing, the hotel is perfect and the staff is amazing. The food and amenities are excellent. We had a private hot spring every evening really added to the enjoyment. My wife and I and eight year-old daughter had a great time you so much for the great experience and all the hospitality Perfect Stay. 100%!!!

GGuest UserIt was a great stay. The staff was super friendly and spoke English. The had parking vallet, provided an outfit to change into and roam outside. The hot springs was super relaxing and great for the feet and body. We tried five of their private hot spring rooms out of the many more they had, some had super hot water while others were warm. The outside room hot springs were beautifully decorated. They gave us access to the 9 public onsens that had different minerals in the for body healing. At night it was even more beautiful with the night walk and the town puts on a beautiful show and night market. Super glad we booked the stay.
YYangmiemieaichilingshiMy stay at Hotel Indigo Karuizawa was incredibly comfortable and relaxing. It offered a completely different vibe compared to hotels in central Tokyo. The moment I arrived, I felt like I was on vacation. The design is unique and tasteful, not at all ostentatious, blending beautifully with Karuizawa's natural surroundings. The room was more spacious than I expected, and the balcony offered a great view; waking up and opening the curtains in the morning really brightened my mood. The bedding was very comfortable, and it was quiet at night, leading to excellent sleep quality. The onsen (hot spring) and public areas were also a big plus; after exploring Old Karuizawa, a soak there completely unwound me. The staff provided natural and unobtrusive service, yet they were always there to help when needed. Overall, it's a perfect place to slow down and enjoy the pace of Karuizawa for a night or two. If I come back, this hotel will definitely be my first choice again.
GGuest UserThe room was quite spacious and well-equipped, and it was kept very clean. It's about a ten-minute walk from Matsumoto Station. The area around the hotel is very quiet, though dining and shopping options aren't very convenient.
GGuest UserI stayed at this hotel with my wife and two children during a two-night trip to Karuizawa in early February. The hotel is around 100 years old and its claim to fame is that John Lennon has stayed there. The piano that he played on is still in the bar.
Location: The hotel is near Old Ginza Street and around a 15-minutes drive from Karuizawa station. It was not difficult to find, but you must navigate a narrow approach to the hotel which is icy at this time of the year, so you must drive carefully.
Cleaniness: The staff told me that the hotel was only recently and everything was very clean and in good condition.
Service: The receptionist that conducted the check-in was probably the Japanese that spoke the best English that I had encountered on this trip. He spent a lot of time explaining the hotel to our family. The porter was also very helpful and polite. When we asked for extra toothbrushes and slippers for the children, housekeeping was very prompt in delivering them and even brought some children's robes for my sons.
Facilities: The hotel did not have many facilities. There is a small shop, a bar and a french restaurant but not much else. Some rooms had private hot springs in them and they gave us the opportunity to upgrade. Our room, had a small balcony even though we were on the ground floor. It looked onto a wooded area so there was not much to see, especially at night. However, when it snowed the next morning, my kids loved going out and playing in the snow. I was particularly impressed by the breakfast. It was a simple American breakfast very well presented. It was very pleasurable to look out into the inner courtyard with it was snowing.
Overall: I like this hotel as it has a lot of character. It is architecturally attractive and has kept a lot of its charm despite renovation. The staff are very professional and polite. I would stay in this hotel again.
GGuest UserThe room was comfortable and spacious. The hotel also provides thoughtful toiletries and personal care
products. Good location with sightseeing spots iwithin walking distance.
On top of that, the staff were very helpful and patient, my son accidentally left his toy behind, and they went out of their way to help us find it. Truly appreciated!
GGuest UserWe spent 2 nights in Prince after first 2 nights in Kusatsu onsen town. The hotel looked underwhelming on arrival and the front office service was efficient but cursory compared to the warm hospitality we had in the ryokan stay. It was low season and hotel was very quiet and had a ”cold” atmosphere.
I was further disappointed when we were shown our room which was on the lowest floor with a simple garden view. On requesting the check-in staff for a change of room on higher floor and a more scenic view, I was told there is an upgrade charge, which I accepted. The new room was the same size and configuration but on a higher floor with a nice view of Mt Asama. While I was happy to pay the fee, I can't help but compare their practice with all the hotels that I have stayed in all these years, where room changes were complimentary so long as the room type remains the same. Nevertheless, the hotel's facilities delighted me immensely and I enjoyed the overall experience.
The highlight of the hotel stay was the fantastic view of Asama in a high ceiling dining room with full glass window. We were able to have different table seatings for both morning breakfast as the hotel occupancy was low, which gave us different perspectives of the scenery.
The other highlight of the hotel is the onsen facility which is located in a separate building on higher ground, accessible via a self service automated tram. Aside from Asama view in the outdoor onsens, there is a common lounge which has equally awesome view of Asama. We enjoyed our time soaking in onsen and resting in the lounge.

I would go back to Prince Asama and experience the scenery during a different season!
GGuest UserThe reality exceeded my expectations; the hotel was even better than I imagined. The room was very comfortable for a family with a small child! There's a private hot spring for families available by reservation, though the usage time is a bit short, it's still great overall! The food is high-quality, delicious, and varied. It's also possible to extend your stay for 1000 yen per hour, which is super convenient when traveling with a child. The hotel corridors aren't perfectly clean due to age, but the room itself is clean and pleasant.
