Deepavali in KL or Penang: Where to Spend the Long Weekend

Author's Profile Picture

Deepavali 2026 falls on Sunday 8 November, and most of the country takes Monday 9 November off as well. That gives you three days in the middle of the festival, which is why the same question keeps coming up: Kuala Lumpur or Penang?

The short version. Brickfields in KL is the bigger celebration and the easier trip. George Town's Little India is smaller, calmer and much better folded into a weekend of eating. Both are public, both are free to walk through, and both reward the person who arrives before the festival day rather than on it. This guide compares the two on what happens on each of the three days, how you get there, where you sleep and what to skip. The full 2026 calendar, including the state-by-state holiday table, sits on the Malaysia public holidays 2026 page.

The short answer

Pick KL if you want the festival itself with the least planning. Pick Penang if the festival is one part of a weekend you would have enjoyed anyway.

Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur

George Town, Penang

What it is

Malaysia's best-known Little India, a short walk from KL Sentral

A compact Little India inside a UNESCO heritage core

Best night

The eve, Saturday 7 November

Any evening in the final week before

Temple morning

Sri Kandaswamy Kovil and Sri Mahamariamman on Jalan Tun H.S. Lee

Sri Mahamariamman on Lebuh Queen

Getting there

Walk out of KL Sentral

Four hours by ETS, then a ferry or a drive

Where you sleep

KL Sentral hotels, walkable to the lights

Heritage shophouse hotels inside the core

Choose it if

You want one strong day out and a short trip home

You want three days of food with a festival in the middle

The decision usually comes down to travel time. Brickfields is a fifteen-minute walk from a major rail hub, so a day trip from anywhere in the Klang Valley costs you nothing but an LRT fare. Penang eats a travel day in each direction, which is fine over a long weekend and miserable over two days.

What actually happens on 7, 8 and 9 November

The festival is one day. The celebration runs for weeks before it, and the part visitors enjoy most is the run-up, not the day itself.

Saturday 7 November, the eve. The bazaars are at full volume, the lights are on and the last-minute shoppers are out. In Brickfields the main street is usually closed to traffic for a public celebration on the eve, so plan to arrive by train or on foot. In George Town the stalls along the Little India lanes run late and the crowds peak after dark.

Sunday 8 November, the festival. Families take an oil bath before dawn, dress in new clothes and go to the temple in the morning. Afternoon and evening belong to open houses and family visits, which means the streets are quieter than the day before and the temples are much busier. If your plan is photographs of lights and stalls, the 8th is the weakest of the three days for that.

Monday 9 November, the replacement holiday. Banks, government offices and plenty of family-run shops stay shut. Malls and anything aimed at visitors usually open. Roads between Kuala Lumpur and Penang are heavy in the morning and heavy again after lunch on Monday, so travel early or travel late.

Brickfields: the capital's Deepavali

The whole neighbourhood runs along Jalan Tun Sambanthan, and the festival is concentrated in the few hundred metres around it. Flower sellers string marigold garlands across the five-foot ways, sweet shops stack trays of laddu and jireh, and textile shops spill saris onto the pavement. Go after 7pm when the heat breaks and the lights are doing their work.

For the religious side, two temples matter. Sri Kandaswamy Kovil on Jalan Scott is the neighbourhood's own, and Sri Mahamariamman Temple on Jalan Tun H.S. Lee, a short ride away, is the oldest Hindu temple in the city, dating to 1873, and the busiest on festival morning. Expect queues, security checks and a dress code at both.

What makes KL easy is the geography. KL Sentral is next door, which means KTM Komuter, the LRT, the MRT and the KLIA express all deliver you within walking distance. Park at a mall and you will spend the evening circling. If you are staying over, the hotels around Kuala Lumpur Sentral put you inside the crowd rather than commuting into it, and rooms in the area were listed from roughly RM130 a night when I checked on 30 October 2026.

I would like to give a very big thank you to the wonderful service team at Hotel Maya, especially Joy, Hannah, Krisbell, and Andrew. My fiancée and I had a wonderful stay at Hotel Maya, and their service really made our experience even more special. From the moment we interacted with them, they were extremely friendly, attentive, professional, and always willing to help. They provided excellent customer service without making us feel uncomfortable or overly formal, which made us feel genuinely welcomed and well taken care of. What impressed me most was their attention to detail and their warm attitude throughout our stay. Every small interaction felt sincere, and they were always ready to assist whenever we needed anything. Their service definitely added a personal touch to what was already a beautiful and luxurious hotel experience. We were celebrating a very special occasion during our stay, and the team made the experience even more memorable for both of us. Their kindness and professionalism truly stood out, and I sincerely appreciate all the effort they put into making our stay comfortable and enjoyable. A big thank you once again to Joy, Hannah, Krisbell, and Andrew. You are a wonderful representation of Hotel Maya, and your excellent service deserves to be recognised. We had a luxury, comfortable, and memorable experience at Hotel Maya, and we would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone looking for great hospitality, beautiful surroundings, and genuinely friendly service. Highly recommended! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Royal Chulan Kuala Lumpur Extremely satisfied with my stay at Royal Chulan Kuala Lumpur. 🥰✨ The room was comfortable, the hotel atmosphere was very pleasant, and the service was good. The only thing that could be improved is the breakfast selection and quality. If the breakfast could be enhanced, the experience at this hotel would be even more perfect. Overall, it's still highly recommended, and I will definitely be back to stay again. ❤️

Our stay at The Face Suites Kuala Lumpur was truly one of the highlights of our trip. From the moment we arrived, we felt welcomed by the friendly staff. The suite was spacious, clean, and perfect for our family, with breathtaking views of the city that we enjoyed every day. My son especially loved the infinity pool, and it was such a joy creating special family memories together. After a full day of exploring Kuala Lumpur, coming back to a comfortable and peaceful room made all the difference. Thank you, The Face Suites, for making our stay so enjoyable. We left with wonderful memories and will definitely choose to stay here again when we return to Kuala Lumpur.

This was my first time staying at DoubleTree by Hilton Kuala Lumpur, and I had a really pleasant experience. The staff were very friendly, attentive, and helpful throughout my stay. They were always willing to assist and made us feel very welcome. The breakfast was also one of the highlights of our stay. There were so many choices and a good variety of food, which was very impressive. We really enjoyed having breakfast there. What made the stay even more special was that the staff made an effort to prepare some simple decorations for our wedding anniversary. It was a very thoughtful

Overall, it was a decent stay for our one night baby moon trip. We were able to check-in early than 3pm and the services are great from front desk and the room service. The only thing that needed improvement is the cleanliness - the room is clean but upon check in, there are few bits and pieces of plastic or probably little clean up leftover from the house keeping. Not a big deal but if this can be further improved, it can definitely make the stay more great. Other than that, the only thing I'm not very satisfied is the pillows were too soft that it’s affected my sleep and slightly hurt my neck and shoulder. We did request for additional pillows and they did provided us with extras. Hope the team can look into this and further improved as we really enjoyed our stay.

I booked the Pullman Kuala Lumpur City Centre for F1 during the National Day holiday, knowing it would be late and hotel prices would be heavily inflated. I chose this Pullman after extensive research and comparing many reviews. However, right after booking, prices kept dropping due to the Indonesian haze… frustrating 😓. The hotel itself is an older upscale chain with a certain sense of history. The facilities are quite dated; the overall decor, air conditioning, hairdryer, and iron all show their age, but they are maintained relatively cleanly. Noise is a major issue: 1) There's a construction site right outside the hotel. 2) The door gaps are very wide, offering no sound insulation (and I was given a room near the elevator, so I could hear people checking in late every night). 3) The air conditioning unit is old and makes a clunking noise when operating. There are still some positives: The buffet breakfast offers a good variety and tastes decent, and there's plenty of seating, so you rarely have to queue. There's an outdoor pool and gym on the 10th floor, both well-maintained. The location is also quite good; Pavilion is just across the road, but note that you can't just walk straight across as there's no crosswalk. You have to walk about 300 meters to use the pedestrian bridge (the same bridge also leads directly to the Petronas Twin Towers). Overall, it's decent. Shopping and dining in the vicinity are well-covered. However, the value for money significantly drops during holidays. If you can get it for a few hundred during off-peak times, it would be excellent value, given its prime location.

Near to the metro, only 3 stops from KL sentral where you can catch the airport express train. The hallway has need renovated by the room, despite well-maintained, shows signs of age. The mall linked to the hotel is also quite old, just sufficient for food and grabbing some necessities.

We booked this hotel based on the reviews but it was different from what we expected. We stayed there for a week and unfortunately, our initial room was right next to the elevator and had no windows. It was extremely noisy and we could hear everyone passing by in the hallway. Eventually, they moved us to another room which was a bit quieter. Cleanliness was just okay, not great. We had to ask housekeeping to change the bedsheets because they were stained, and the bathroom cleanliness was also average. Although the staff were friendly, they weren’t very professional in handling complaints. When we raised our concerns, the response was basically, 'It is what it is.'

1. The hotel service was very friendly. The Chinese guy with glasses was very welcoming, and the receptionist at the restaurant was lovely too. They even gave us complimentary bottled water before we checked out. 2. The hotel room was very clean, tidied and serviced daily, and they even folded the towels into swan shapes. 3. The only minor drawback was that the bathroom didn't have a separate wet and dry area, so a lot of water would splash out while taking a shower. 4. The hotel location is decent. Although it's not right in the city center, it's only a 10-minute taxi ride from the KLCC Petronas Twin Towers. However, there isn't much to explore within walking distance. 5. The breakfast was delicious; I'd recommend booking a room with breakfast included.

The front desk offers Chinese-speaking service, but if you don't ask, they'll assign you a room at the very end of the hallway—it's a long walk from the elevators, though it is quiet, so it depends on what you prefer. It seems none of the hotels in Kuala Lumpur provide bottled water; instead, the rooms have Halal direct-drinking water taps, but you can cross the street downstairs to buy bottled water with green caps from the convenience store. The hotel restaurant looks quite good, but I got back to the hotel too late every day to try it. The hairdryer is great and the bed is comfortable too; overall, I am very satisfied. It's only about a 10-minute walk from the Petronas Twin Towers back to the hotel.

Hotel Review Location: Excellent—just across the road from Kampung Baru food area, very convenient for foodies. Check-in: Allowed early check-in at 1:30 PM despite 3 PM standard time due to room availability. Much appreciated. Staff: Special mention to the staff member resembling celebrity singer Hafiz—excellent service, kept everything smooth and entertaining. Kudos. Room (1619): Connecting room arrangement was inconvenient; needed to prop the door open (1619,1620) TV in father's room not functioning (1618) Major issue: Strong sewage smell in bathroom—disturbing and needs immediate attention Toiletries: Initially not refilled—no lotion, body wash in my room; no shower gel or conditioner in dad's room. Staff replaced with hand-packed amenities. Appreciated the gesture. Food & Dining: Breakfast buffet: RM37.10—excellent value; surprisingly good nasi goreng (first time I enjoyed it) In-room dining: Nasi Goreng Tamu was good, but sambal prawn was too sweet Hotel breakfast preferred over outside options—area dominated by nasi padang, which isn't to our taste Overall: Okay stay. Responsive service on toiletries and excellent staff, but bathroom odor and room setup issues need fixing.

The room is spacious and clean. Perhaps our room is not facing the main road, we do get peaceful night rest (love it). As we booked the executive club, we were entitled to the club benefits, where we enjoyed ourselves every evening with great snacks and drinks, served by Audray. He is cheerful and attentive. He is always ready to clear the table in a timely manner, and make sure we get the help we need. In the morning, you can choose to have breakfast at level 3 cafe with a wider range of food choices, or you can choose to have a quiet breakfast in the lounge, served by White. Even though the food choice is lesser compared to the cafe, the food was yummy and sufficient. The swimming pool is small, enough if you just want a quick dip. I am not a gym person, but it is available. This hotel is connected to lalaport by bridge. Is convenient and easily accessible. BTW there is this massage opposite - Asia Oasis. They provide a 10% discount to Furama staying guests.

Despite a quick and efficient check-in, we were assigned our room. Upon arrival, there was a constant motor noise in the room, as well as extremely loud music and street noise. The music vibrations were so strong that we asked to change rooms. The second room was even worse in terms of noise—a constant air conditioning hum. When you put your head on the pillow, the noise and vibrations in our ears were even worse. We spent 3 horrible nights because of this noise. Elevator wait times can be long. Very helpful staff and nothing to fault regarding cleanliness. The location is top-notch. As for the rest—specifically getting a good night's sleep—with two different rooms, the experience was very disappointing.

The location is excellent, making it convenient to get to the city center and nearby attractions. The hotel environment is comfortable overall, and the room size is decent. My overall stay was pleasant. However, it's a bit of a shame that there are hardly any restaurants or convenience stores near the hotel; food options are very limited, making it inconvenient to find something to eat at night. As this was my first time in Kuala Lumpur, I chose to stay at this hotel for its great location. Right across the street is the Central Market, so finding souvenirs and food at the 2nd-floor food court was a breeze. The train station is just a short walk away, making it easy to get anywhere. Walking a bit further brings you to the Kuala Lumpur Station, from which you can also visit Batu Caves. The location of this hotel is simply unbeatable. Plus, there is a laundromat right in front where you can wash and dry your clothes for around 20 RM. The breakfast, though simple, offered a variety of local flavors, and I was glad I chose the breakfast-inclusive plan. There were a few ants, but it didn't bother me much. The only disappointing thing was the lack of soap, so I had to use body wash to wash my hands. Overall, it's a very nice hotel.

The check-in experience was very good. Someone came to help push the luggage when I got of the bus. Although you can't check in early if you arrive early, you can also check in your luggage for free. During check-in, there are also staff to help deliver the luggage to the door of the room, and will also explain where to eat if you need a hotel buffet breakfast the next morning. The service is considerate! Check out is also very smooth and there is no need to wait! The security is also very good. There will be several guards downstairs! Decent place to stay. The breakfast was really good 👍 and I slept quite well. The location is fantastic, but the traffic right outside is indeed quite heavy. The hotel is very welcoming to Chinese guests. When our credit card failed to process the deposit after multiple attempts, they waived it altogether. The staff greeted us warmly whenever we came and went, proactively asked for our license plate number and kept an eye out for our ride while we waited, and enthusiastically helped with our luggage. Rooms on higher floors are relatively quiet. The facilities are not overly outdated; while there are a few missed spots during cleaning, it is generally good. Housekeeping is prompt and includes turndown service. Overall, it's a great place. None of the messy issues mentioned in the negative reviews happened to us. Perhaps the hotel has improved since those reviews were written? Anyway, I had a very pleasant stay...

The hotel's location is absolutely fantastic. From our room, with the curtains open, we had a direct view of the Twin Towers. On good weather days, we could even walk to the Twin Towers through the park downstairs. If you want to avoid the sun and wind, you can take the long corridor on the G floor, then an elevator down to the C floor, and use the underground passage to reach KLCC. From KLCC, there's even an indoor skybridge connecting to Pavilion Mall! This whole experience was truly excellent! The hotel service is top-notch, whether it's the front desk or room service. The only minor drawback is the lack of Chinese-speaking staff, so you'll need English throughout your stay. However, the breakfast selection was quite ordinary, and some items weren't to my taste. Additionally, the bathroom design is rather impractical. The shower and bathtub share a single sliding glass door, which inevitably leads to a larger area of the floor getting wet when showering, making it a slipping hazard. Moreover, the showerhead is positioned quite low, making it a bit inconvenient to use.

Convenient location and close to the main attractions, although the roads are very narrow if you’re driving. The parking information is misleading. The photos show automated/mechanical parking, but the hotel doesn’t actually have it. There are only a few free parking spaces in front of the hotel on a first-come, first-served basis. If they’re full, you’ll need to park at the open car park opposite for RM15 per entry. The room looked clean at first, but there was quite a bit of dust beside the bed, a pin on bedside (which could be a safety hazard), and some stains on the bedsheet. The bathroom was clean. Soundproofing is poor, and the hair dryer in my room wasn’t working (though I forgot to inform the staff). On the bright side, the staff were very friendly and helpful throughout the stay.

The hotel's location is excellent, making it convenient for dining, shopping, and visiting attractions. Taxis also find it easy to locate, making it a convenient choice for first-time visitors to Kuala Lumpur. The hotel breakfast offers a wide variety of options, including many local specialties. However, I personally prefer lighter meals in the morning, and the selection of vegetables was a bit limited. Otherwise, it was all very good. The hotel service was also excellent. Staff assisted with luggage upon arrival and departure, and luggage storage felt very secure. The service was enthusiastic. The hotel facilities are comprehensive, and they are generous with beverages, which I didn't experience at Hilton. Finally, I have three suggestions: 1. The bedding really needs to be replaced. There were many yellow stains and it felt damp, which made it seem unhygienic. 2. When cleaning, please check if all items are replenished. The shampoo in room 1812 was empty, and it seemed like it wasn't noticed during cleaning. I had to use body wash for my hair... please be more thorough. 3. There were insects in both the bathroom sink area and the toilet. The sink area is open and quite close to the bed, which made me feel itchy. Pest control is needed promptly. With many restaurants nearby and the room being a bit damp, hygiene really needs attention. Lastly, the prepayment refund is taking a bit long; it should be processed promptly.

TLDR: Ceylonz is a great hotel, but the provider (Five Senses) is not. Book a different provider if you want to stay at Ceylonz. (Trip.com does not let me post videos, refer to the pictures below) Initial room conditions: When we first entered the room we encountered these things: - Leftover jacket from the previous guest(?) - stains on the chairs - water stains on the wardrobe - dead ants in the wardrobe - a flickering light Service: Because we chose to stay for 7 nights, we had a 1 free make-up room offered to us which we appreciated. However when we flagged up the issues we found on the first day, they gave us a make-up room on the second day and consumed our free make-up room without our choice. We wanted to use it in the middle of the trip like the 4th day. Because of this we had no toilet paper, tissue box was empty, towels were not replaced. After the 2nd day, they no longer replied to our texts when we enquired about using the sports lounge, requesting a makeup room, getting more toilet paper. Very bad service. After their make-up room, they removed the jacket and cleaned the seat stains, but they did not fix the light or clean the dead ants in the wardrobe. We understand fixing a light might not be possible but the ants were easily removable and we did it ourselves after they left. It felt like they were cutting corners as they also did not replace our tissue box, clean the dead ants or clean the water stains on the wardrobe. Ceylonz: The hotel comes with - nice pool, - 2 gym rooms with great views, - a minimart at the ground floor, - amazing location, walking distance from Bukit Bintang's Pavilion Room: - the amenities provided are not the same for every room, the last time we came there was a water dispenser and pull-out kitchen, this time there isn't (same five senses at ceylonz, same room type) - spacious - tall ceiling - well equipped - bay window - the walls are relatively soundproof so you cannot hear other rooms but the door is not and the hallway is very audible from inside the room, we can hear people chatting, checking in, pulling luggages Bed: - not soft, hard bed with springs - pillows and blanket is okay - uncomfortable bed We would have given this place a glowing review if they: - Stuck to their 1 complimentary makeup room offered - service: replied to our enquiries at all after the 2nd day - better room cleanliness/make-up room diligence: cleaned the dead ants and the water stains on the wardrobe

A little birthday staycation with my BFFs at Four Seasons KL 🥂🎂❤️ Really enjoyed the whole stay — beautiful room, comfy bed, amazing bathroom and all the little luxury touches that made it feel extra special. ✨ The Executive Lounge was definitely one of the highlights too. Loved having a quiet place to chill, enjoy the food and drinks, and just catch up with my BFFs. The service was attentive and everything felt so comfortable and relaxing. And the spa experience… 💆🏻♀️❤️ The foot massage was superb! Exactly what I needed after a busy period. So relaxing that I almost fell asleep. 😂 Definitely one of the best parts of the stay. But honestly, the best part was spending time together — chatting, laughing, eating and celebrating another year with the people who make life more meaningful. 🥰 Thank you Four Seasons KL for making my birthday staycation extra special. ❤️ Good food, good service, relaxing spa, beautiful stay and most importantly… good friends. 🥂✨

The breakfast selection was extensive, and they didn't rush to clear things or stop refilling even when it was close to closing time. Since my flight was late at night, I requested a late check-out and was allowed to check out at 3 PM, which gave me more time to enjoy the hotel facilities during the afternoon. That was excellent. All the staff members were very good at providing various services and assistance. The location is indeed very convenient, right in the city center, but you should also be aware that traffic jams can be frequent there.

It takes about an hour by SUV taxi from the airport, costing 94 MYR. I stayed here for 3 consecutive days. It's a well-established hotel located in the Bukit Bintang area, surrounded by many upscale hotels and shopping malls. While the hotel is a bit dated, the facilities and amenities are quite good, and the breakfast is also decent. The main advantage of staying here is the convenience for shopping—Pavilion, Fahrenheit88, Jalan Alor, and the iconic McDonald's photo spot are all within a 10-minute walk. On the second floor, there is a sky bridge connecting to the adjacent Marriott; you can walk through the Marriott main entrance, and Pavilion is right across the street. Walking to the Petronas Twin Towers takes about half an hour, and you can take the covered walkway starting near Pavilion all the way there. Overall, a decent stay.

During our stay at Grand Millennium Kuala Lumpur, we would like to extend our special thanks to Hao Ting for his warm and enthusiastic help! We accidentally lost our wallet during the trip and needed to communicate with the local police and relevant authorities. He patiently and thoughtfully assisted us in overcoming language barriers and communicating effectively, which gave us immense help and peace of mind. Encountering difficulties in a foreign country makes such sincerity and warmth particularly touching. Huge thanks to Hao Ting for his professionalism and kindness, and we hope the hotel management will recognize his efforts! Exceptional staff truly bring a warmth that exceeds expectations to any stay.

Though our Premier room was big in size, it was not efficiently layout with bed facing the entrance door directly. Though we were at 32nd storey, the room faced a tower under construction. Fortunately upon request, we were given another room on the 43rd storey the next day, though it was a 'downgrade' to a Superior room. Thanks to the friendly front desk lady who helped us with the room change. Cheers

Quite a surprise! I booked this hotel last minute, and the price was great. After checking in, I found it to be very clean and much quieter than the hotel next door. It has a pool, and when you store your luggage, they give you a proper tag, unlike other hotels where they just haphazardly leave it at the front desk. After a long day of sightseeing, I was too tired to go out, so I ordered takeout to the hotel. Overall, I'm very satisfied.

Banyan Tree does not disappoint. The zen-like retreat atmosphere and the super attentive staff reminds me of the first trip I made here last year. Right from the start at check in, you are well taken care of with the welcome package - the iced hibiscus tea and cookie and towel. Then you proceed to choose your scent for your room. Special kudos to the wellness initiatives on the TV, just a tad pity that the physical activities were not available. The breakfast was top notch quality with both ala carte and self service buffet selections. I'll be back!

I wouldn't recommend staying here if you don't speak English. Communication was a nightmare, and the front desk staff weren't very clear. Basically, the language barrier combined with an unaccommodating front desk made everything difficult. The location isn't great either; you need a taxi to get anywhere, and walking takes about half an hour. The room itself was just okay. I was swayed by good reviews saying the front desk had friendly female staff and that early check-in was possible for a fee. But when I got there, it was all male staff at the front desk. I had to wait for a room immediately, and paying extra for early check-in wasn't even an option. I arrived in the early morning and couldn't check in until 1:30 PM. Also, I saw that breakfast was included when I booked, but when I asked, they said it would cost 17 MYR. For 230 a night, it's really not worth it. I might as well have stayed at a hostel in Chinatown or a hotel with a pool for better photo opportunities. I just wanted my own room, but it ended up being a lot of hassle, very tiring, and I didn't get good rest. I don't recommend it; it was quite a miserable stay.

Indie Hotel is tucked away in a quiet corner of Bukit Ceylon, making it a great escape from the busy city while still being close to everything. The location is honestly one of its strongest points — just a short distance from KL Tower, about 10 minutes from Bukit Bintang MRT, and only a few minutes’ walk to Jalan Alor, which is basically street food heaven in KL . The room itself is clean, cozy, and very comfortable. What really stood out to me was the bed — the pillows and mattress were incredibly soft, easily among the most comfortable I’ve experienced in a hotel. Everything worked well too: strong hot shower, cold air conditioning, and free WiFi provided. There’s also a mini mart right below the hotel, which is super convenient if you don’t feel like heading out for food or essentials. Overall, this is a great choice for an affordable staycation — especially if you’re looking for a quiet environment without sacrificing comfort or location.

George Town: Penang's Deepavali

Penang's version is smaller and, for my money, nicer to walk. The lanes are Lebuh Queen, Lebuh Pasar, Lebuh King and Lebuh Penang, all packed into a few blocks of the heritage zone. Sri Mahamariamman Temple on Lebuh Queen anchors it, and it is the oldest Hindu temple on the island.

The rhythm is different from KL. Stalls go up in the evenings and the final week before Deepavali is the busiest, with the last Saturday the peak. Because everything sits inside the heritage core, you can leave the hotel on foot, eat banana leaf rice, buy a garland, watch a kolam being drawn and be back in your room without touching a car. Parking in that last week is genuinely bad, and driving in is slower than walking.

The trade-off is scale. Brickfields has more of everything: more stalls, more shops, a bigger temple crowd. George Town gives you a festival you can finish in an evening and then spend the rest of the weekend on Penang food, which is the reason most people go to Penang anyway. A George Town hotel list puts you inside that walking radius, with rooms listed from about RM129 a night on the same date.

Overall, the room at Ascott Penang was spacious, and the bathroom was also very large. The view was beautiful, and the location is excellent — right next to Gurney Bay and connected to Gurney Walk. It’s very convenient to find breakfast, restaurants, massage and hair salons nearby. However, there were quite a few areas that I felt could be improved. The bed was surprisingly small, especially considering how spacious the room was. More importantly, I was disappointed with the facilities and service. The room telephone was not working when I tried to contact Room Service. I then Googled the hotel’s phone number and called using my mobile phone, but no one answered even after several attempts. I also contacted the hotel via WhatsApp, but the only available contact was the Dining department, and I only received a reply the next day. For a hotel of this standard, I feel that the facilities and service response should be improved. I was also not very impressed with the front desk service. During check-in, I went to the middle counter, but the staff asked me to go to another counter. When I went there, I noticed the staff member rolled her eyes, which I personally found quite unprofessional. Overall, the front desk staff did not seem very welcoming or enthusiastic, and the service attitude could definitely be improved. I think Ascott Penang has a lot of potential because the room size, view and location are all great. However, the facilities, communication channels and staff service training need more attention to match the standard expected from the hotel.

An exceptionally satisfying first-time experience! I initially only booked one night after reading online reviews mentioning strange noises in the hotel, but because our previous stay at the Hard Rock was such a disappointment, we decided to extend our stay here by another night. It completely exceeded our expectations. Service: The staff were all warm, friendly, and proactive in offering help. There was even a turndown service before bedtime, where they neatly folded the duvet and left a thoughtful little bookmark printed with a Malay proverb. Out of all the hotels we've stayed at in Malaysia, Eastern & Oriental (E&O) is by far the most generous with complimentary bottled water! Ambiance: The hotel is stunning, steeped in art and literature. We stayed in the Victory Annex and didn't experience any of the strange noises we were worried about. The hotel's interior design is very tasteful—truly living up to its reputation as a heritage hotel. Breakfast: The variety was fantastic, and looking out over the sea while dining was a great experience—we chose outdoor seating, which was super chill. The swimming pool is also gorgeous, and the kids had a blast. Location: Very convenient, right in George Town. Walking around to explore and eat is a breeze; even if you go out at 9 or 10 PM for a bite, you can still find small shops open. If I ever get the chance to visit Penang again, I will definitely stay here!

The hotel has an amazing location, and the staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. We even received a complimentary late check-out, which was very much appreciated! The bar adjacent to the hotel was superb, with excellent drinks and a great atmosphere. The amenities were beautiful, especially the pool area. Unfortunately, during our stay, workers were preparing the venue for a wedding, which made the pool area a little less peaceful than expected. Of course, things like this happen, but it would have been nice if the workers had been a bit more mindful of the guests relaxing by the pool and kept the noise and shouting to a minimum. Overall, we had a wonderful stay. My only regret is that we didn't stay longer, as there were so many things the hotel had to offer that we didn't have enough time to experience. I would happily come back!

The Muntri Room is a standalone building, formerly a Nanyang Chinese merchant's residence, not far from the main building. It's well-preserved and a typical Baba Nyonya house. The house is structured into two floors: the first floor has an entrance hall, a main hall, a deep well courtyard, a kitchen, and a servant's room; the second floor has a master bedroom, a secondary bedroom, a long corridor living room, and an elder's room/boudoir. This house fully showcases the structure and culture of a wealthy Chinese merchant's residence during the British colonial period a hundred years ago. The location is truly excellent; it's very close to Beryl's chocolate 'white house', Tai Tong Restaurant, and Southwest Teahouse, and it feels safe at night. The only downside is that the house is very large, and the hotel doesn't have enough staff. Due to its age and lack of maintenance, there's a musty smell upon entering, and because of the humidity, there are mosquitoes, cockroaches, and ants. The hotel provides insecticide inside the house. The mattress likely hasn't been changed in a long time due to dampness, leading to bed bugs. I brought disposable sheets, pillowcases, and eucalyptus essential oil myself, which helped control the bugs. The door to the small terrace in the elder's room on the second floor was broken, so they simply locked it with a small iron lock, and a thin curtain provided some cover. The master bedroom on the second floor is large but faces the road, so it can be noisy at night when motorcycles pass by. If you're particular, you wouldn't be able to stay here. However, if you're willing to do some cleaning yourself, this building is quite good and offers great photo opportunities, whether for VLOGs or professional shoots. Nanyang shophouses have a unique characteristic: they appear dim even with lights on during the day but brighter at night, which is for heat dissipation. If the entire house were consistently fumigated with moxa sticks, the dampness, musty smell, and insects would disappear. After a deep conversation, the proprietress of the hotel turned out to be quite enthusiastic. The overall structure of the house is really great, but it's a shame the hotel only has two staff members. It's quite challenging for two people to clean so many buildings, especially to every corner. The owner could improve cleaning efficiency with some modern tools (like high-power vacuum cleaners with UV disinfection). If the hygiene issues and certain hardware problems in such a wonderful antique building were resolved, the occupancy rate would significantly increase.

Regal and distinctly English in style, this hotel was once a duke's private residence. With only eight rooms, each is quite spacious, clean, and well-maintained, offering attentive service. The main draw is the limited number of guests. The rooms have high ceilings, and the bathrooms are generously sized, with separate areas for showering, washing, and the toilet. Each room has a unique, single key. Breakfast is à la carte, small yet exquisite, though it only starts at 8 AM. Overall, a wonderful experience. It's right in the city center.

The location is strategic and convenient, and the hotel provides parking. However, for a 4-star hotel, the toilet roll provided feels more like a budget hotel standard. There is also no non-slip mat provided in the bathroom, which can be quite inconvenient and potentially unsafe. The parking arrangement is also a bit troublesome. Facilities: This is a very, very old local hotel. We booked it by mistake because we misread the name, but it was cheap, so that's a plus 🤣. Hygiene: The hygiene was really just average. There was a lot of dust on the bathroom counter and the room's desk. Environment: It's located in the old town of Penang, surrounded by old streets and buildings right outside. Penang's main cultural attractions are all in this area, making it great for photos and sightseeing. It's quiet despite being in a busy area, and also very close to the airport. Service: The bellhop was very enthusiastic, opening and closing doors – excellent service from them. However, the front desk service was just average. A gorgeous, beautiful, and authentic hotel where every detail has been meticulously thought out. I stayed for one night during peak season in the latter half of January 2026. ROOM: Located on the second floor, designed for four guests (two couples), featuring two large beds and a sofa. Amenities included a silent ceiling fan, ducted air conditioning, a refrigerator, and two 43-inch Panasonic TVs with USB ports but no YouTube. There's no electric kettle in the room, but electric thermos pots are available on the floor, along with unlimited tea, coffee, and snacks. Upon arrival, the room had four large bottles of water, plenty of fresh lemons, juice, and a non-alcoholic drink in the fridge. Street noise is audible in the room; to mitigate it, you need to close the bathroom windows. While not a cheap hotel, it's luxurious and in excellent condition. The complimentary breakfast was also convenient & delicious. We missed our chance to have dinner at the restaurant, but the mutton rendang and nyonya food sounded promising. Only downside was the room only came with one key, which had to be inserted to provide room power, preventing us from doing separate activities (not the end of the world). It has an ocean view, an executive lounge, and Chinese-speaking staff, but the food is mediocre and the room experience is even worse. Absolutely terrible value for money—it's outdated, cramped, and doesn't even provide body lotion. The hair dryer is the oldest model available. The floor is high up, and the lounge staff are smiling and provide great service, despite the mediocre food offerings. Welcome fruit was provided. Everything else is a downside: I asked for an extra blanket, and hours passed without housekeeping showing up. Costing over 700 RMB, it has the price of a JW Marriott but the room size of Atour, and it's quite dated. Not even a body lotion. The hair dryer is the most archaic type where you have to hold down the button the whole time. My hair is short and thin, and my hand ached from holding the button before it was even dry. You keep bumping into protruding corners just by turning around. The bathroom sink... The bedside table design is also anti-human—it's a protruding, sharp marble right angle. All in all, not kid-friendly. Strongly advised to skip.

We checked in late on the 5th Sept 2026, after midnight. The check in was smooth and only staff was very friendly and helpful. Our room was on the 29th floor. Next morning, we noticed that the water pressure was extremely loe, esp the shower and bidet. I also noticed the bathroom was not clean. We had to rush for an event and we thought we will inform staff later. Checkout was poor. Two staffs were managing. There were one person before us. The process took at least 15 minutes for the person infront of us The staff didnt even acknowledge us,at least saying ” I'm sorry for the delay” and left us to a third staff who joined later. The second disappeared without even saying that the 3rd staff will take over. Our checkout process was fast. My wife mentioned about the water pressure but the staff didnt give any response. I will not book this hotel despite the location

First impression is very simple layout, and have main necessities. Although 19m2 area have sufficient space to move or luggage placement. Noise outside the building can be heard but it does not disturb the sleep. Surprising comfortable bed. Oh Yes The Location is wonderful because it’s just short walk to all the durians stalls, restaurants, eateries or street hawkers. 2min to Komart or Gama… Again only one word describe this hotel is “simple”. I did not book their breakfast because it is not necessary due to plenty of food short walk from the hotel at a fraction of price.

I stayed in Kuala Lumpur for five days at a hotel that claimed to be a direct branch of a certain domestic chain. I called the Kuala Lumpur branch from China and spoke to an Indian female receptionist, informing her I was a platinum member and requesting a room upgrade for my stay from September 12th to 17th. When I arrived and asked for the upgrade, the Indian receptionist I had spoken to wasn't there. Instead, there was a Malay female receptionist. They then called the Indian receptionist who had promised me the upgrade. After taking my payment for the five days, the Indian receptionist became extremely rude and even pretended that the Malay receptionist who was checking me in was her subordinate and that she was the boss. Eventually, I found out that a Chinese person, who didn't seem to be around much, was actually the Hotel Manager. The front desk staff generally didn't speak Chinese. It was chaotic for a direct branch of a domestic chain. I requested a refund. The female receptionist was uncooperative and refused. I tried to contact the domestic chain's customer service, but they were intentionally unresponsive. After all, I am a platinum member. The direct branch didn't provide an invoice, and since I was on a business trip, I needed an invoice from mainland China, not a local receipt for external trips. Later, I went to Penang for business and cautiously booked a 3-day stay at Nio Hotel through Ctrip. I've been scammed by so many companies in China, big and small, so I was careful. The 3-day cost wasn't much, so the potential loss would be minimal. I carefully reviewed Nio Hotel and its AI analysis. The hotel itself was fine, but it lacked toothbrushes and slippers. I had a toothbrush in my luggage as I travel globally for business frequently, and I had planned to bring slippers from the KL hotel but forgot. I flew business class from Kuala Lumpur to Penang, hoping to get a pair of slippers there, but the business class attendant said they didn't have any. When I arrived at Nio Hotel, I found that my room had a toothbrush and slippers, which was great. It had a window, and despite the Muslim prayer calls and the sound of speeding cars, I usually carry earplugs and noise-cancelling headphones, so I slept well. Due to what might be hotel cost-cutting, I found a long strand of woman's hair on my bath towel on the third day. AI helped me analyze that this hotel might be extremely cost-conscious, but given the higher cost of living in Malaysia, which follows the British Commonwealth system, the price was incredibly good value. All the front desk staff when I checked in were Malay and Indian. While I speak Chinese, I also speak English, so it doesn't matter if the front desk staff speaks Chinese or not, as long as they don't speak Arabic, which I don't understand. I also know a bit of Japanese and German. Durian in Kuala Lumpur was too expensive. I bought a piece of Musang King durian to taste at the base of the tallest building in KL, Menara Monica. At Nio Hotel in Penang, I went downstairs to eat durian and met a large group of wealthy Chinese from Surabaya, Indonesia. They were indulging in Musang King durian, each costing 300 Malaysian Ringgit (nearly 500 RMB). I ate a 50 MYR Kunyit King. These Indonesians must have very high incomes. I also saw some Filipino Chinese feasting on durians costing hundreds of Malaysian Ringgit. The incomes of Filipino Chinese must certainly surpass those in China's first-tier cities. While at Nio Hotel, I drank free coffee at the front desk, but I was concerned about the cup hygiene. Suddenly, an East Asian-looking female manager appeared, spoke Chinese, and told me it was clean and safe to drink. I didn't re-wash it with water and had several cups of coffee. Finally, when checking out to fly to Guangzhou, I had another cup of coffee at the front desk around 6:00 AM. My flight was at 8:15 AM. I had already called a taxi, driven by a young Malay man. I forgot that the driver who was picking me up for the airport had arrived while I was drinking coffee. After finishing my coffee, I went downstairs and told the waiting driver, 'I am here.' The driver said it was fine and that getting to the airport would be smooth. It's been several days since I returned, and the nearby restaurant even refunded me 35 Malaysian Ringgit because on the first day, there was a black spot on a vegetable leaf in my dish. The waiter explained it was a bug bite or something. Anyway, this stay at Nio Hotel was very good value for money.

Here's a polished positive review you can post: I had a wonderful experience at Kim Haus Penang. The building has a beautiful heritage charm with a unique and artistic atmosphere that makes the visit memorable. The food and coffee were delicious, and everything was presented nicely. The staff were friendly, welcoming, and attentive throughout my visit. The location is also perfect for exploring George Town. I would definitely recommend Kim Haus to anyone looking for a cozy place with great food, excellent service, and a distinctive ambiance. Looking forward to visiting again!

Love the traditional deco vibes of this Hotel. Our room was a split unit design where downstairs is living & toilet & bedroom is located upstairs. All the good food & shopping streets are within walking distance. Hotel provides complementary simple breakfast but we opted to eat at nearby Chowrasta Market. Highly recommed to stay in this Hotel if you are visiting Penang.

Convenient location in an office building right smack in Georgetown with eateries within walking distance. Not too busy street so roadside parking is easy for convenience, or you can also park in the building for free under the hotel. It is also a quiet street but not dodgy, allowing travelers restful sleep without compromising safety.

Pros: The hygiene was decent. Cons: 1. The peephole had no cover and directly faced the bed, even offering a view of the bathroom exit. If you stay here, remember to cover it. 2. The front desk staff's service attitude was terrible. You could describe it as overly picky, inflexible, or even deliberately difficult. 3. Arrived at the hotel around 2 AM, only to find out that the deposit *must* be in Malaysian Ringgit cash or a physical credit card for pre-authorization. WeChat Pay or RMB were not accepted. I spent half the night looking for an ATM, only to discover they weren't 24/7 and wouldn't open until 9 AM. When I asked the front desk if they'd accept RMB as a deposit, they flat-out refused. 4. Although it took a while for Trip.com to communicate with the hotel, they eventually managed to arrange for an RMB deposit. But by then, I had already spent about an hour wandering the streets looking for an ATM. 5. The absolute crucial point!!! I really felt like the front desk guy was deliberately making things difficult for Chinese guests. Seriously, no preconceived notions here.

Soori Penang, nestled in Penang's most culturally significant area, is located right next to Khoo Kongsi (Khoo Clan House) and within walking distance of all of Penang's key attractions. You can exit through the side gate before 5 PM; after that, please use the main entrance. The Soori brand is closely associated with its founder, Soo K. Chan, who is also the founder of the renowned architectural firm SCDA Architects. Consequently, the Soori hotel collection is considered an 'architect-led boutique luxury hotel brand.' Unlike large chains like Marriott, Hilton, or Hyatt, Soori stands out as a much rarer independent luxury boutique brand. Soori Penang was meticulously restored from several 19th-century historical shophouses, emphasizing a blend of 'heritage × contemporary luxury.' The room layouts divide the living room, bedroom, and bathroom into three separate, distinct spaces. The shophouse-style elongated layout, private internal courtyard, skylight, reflective pool with water features, premium amenities, and butler service – every design element is simply breathtaking. Upon arriving at Soori Penang, you won't find a standard check-in counter. Instead, a butler will personally greet you. After enjoying a welcome drink, they will take you directly on a room tour. I was fortunate enough to conclude my Malaysian journey perfectly with Soori Penang (including a private car transfer to Penang International Airport). I truly thank myself for making this choice, and I also thank every member of the Soori Penang team.

This hotel is truly special, blending historical charm with modern design. The renovated architecture seamlessly integrates with the old buildings, creating an atmosphere that's both rustic and contemporary. Its location is excellent; you have free access to the Blue House and its facilities, which I visited twice. In the evenings, you can easily walk to the night market street, and there's even a chocolate museum right across the street. The service is exceptional and thoughtful in every detail; they helped with luggage, and you can book a tour guide at the front desk. The tea and tea sets provided were also lovely. Breakfast is served as a set menu, which my mom said was a great way to reduce waste while still offering a balanced meal. I definitely want to come back!

The hotel is within walking distance of the main attractions. There are plenty of shops with groceries and souvenirs nearby to suit all tastes. The room has everything necessary (TV, refrigerator, kettle, hairdryer, Wi-Fi, bottled water). The food is monotonous, and there aren't many dishes, but you won't go hungry. The room is quite small, there's no wardrobe, only a couple of hangers on a rack, and virtually no storage space, which is very inconvenient. The room needs a cosmetic renovation. The ceiling in the shower is low, so if you're taller than average, showering will be uncomfortable. The staff is friendly. It's fine for a couple of days.

I had a pleasant stay at Summer Tree Hotel Penang. The hotel is clean, comfortable, and offers great value for money. The room was spacious, well maintained, and the bed was comfortable, making it a relaxing place to rest after exploring Penang. The location is convenient, with plenty of local eateries, cafés, and popular attractions within a short drive or walking distance. The staff were friendly, helpful, and check-in/check-out was smooth. One thing to note is that the walls are a little thin, so you may occasionally hear noise from neighboring rooms or the hallway. Parking can also be limited during busy periods. Overall, it’s a great choice for travelers looking for an affordable, clean, and conveniently located hotel in George Town. I would definitely consider staying here again on my next trip to Penang.

I had a mixed but overall pleasant stay at Chulia Heritage. The room itself was clean and looked like it was newly renovated, though the amenities provided are very basic. One thing that could be improved in the bathroom is adding a shower door or curtain—currently, water gets everywhere and it doesn't separate the toilet and sink area well. The biggest challenge was the reception area, which has no AC. Standing out there for more than 10 minutes in the hot, humid weather was really tough. I truly hope the owner considers installing a ceiling fan or even some proper portable cooling fans around the reception desk to make it comfortable for guests checking in and out. That being said, I am giving this hotel 5 stars strictly because of the superb receptionists! They made a massive difference. A special shoutout to Natasha 🥰❤️—she was absolutely wonderful! The hospitality here is top-notch thanks to the team.

Getting there, and what it costs you in time

From Kuala Lumpur you have three realistic options, and the train is the one I would take for the long weekend.

The ETS from KL Sentral to Butterworth takes roughly four hours, and KTMB's current timetable runs several northbound services through the day, starting early and finishing late. Not every northbound train continues all the way to Butterworth, so check the train number rather than the departure time. Fares depend on class, Silver, Gold or Platinum, and the cheap seats on the Saturday before a public holiday go first. Book the KL to Penang train before you book the hotel, because the hotel is replaceable and the 8am service is not.

Flying takes about an hour in the air and rather longer door to door: KLIA or Subang, an hour of buffer, then the drive from Penang airport into George Town. For a three-day trip that is a lot of the trip spent in transit. Driving is roughly 340 to 360km depending on route, four hours in good traffic, longer on the Sunday and Monday of a long weekend. The ferry across to the island from Butterworth is short and frequent, and the two bridges do the same job if you are in a car.

What I'd skip, and the etiquette that matters

Five things I would not do, in the order people get them wrong.

Arriving on the 8th expecting the bazaar. The stalls are winding down by festival day. Come on the 7th.

Treating the mall light-ups as the festival. Pavilion and the big malls put on Deepavali displays, and they are pleasant and air-conditioned. They are not Brickfields and they are not Little India.

Turning up at the temple in shorts. Shoulders and knees covered, shoes off at the entrance, and ask before photographing inside the sanctum. A sarong borrowed at the door is normal, not embarrassing.

Assuming everything is shut on Monday. Banks and government offices are. Malls, restaurants and anything tourist-facing mostly are not. Family-run shops in Little India may close for the whole day, which is worth knowing if you went for a specific shop.

Planning an east coast island after the festival. November is when the northeast monsoon arrives and the Perhentian, Redang and Tioman operations close for the season. West coast and Penang are the safer bet, though afternoons on this side bring rain in November either way. Carry a small umbrella and treat 4pm as the risky hour.

On open houses: they are private invitations, usually from a colleague or a friend, and they are one of the warmest things about Deepavali in Malaysia. If you are lucky enough to be asked, bring something small, fruit or a box of sweets, and eat what you are given. You cannot buy a ticket to one, and any page that suggests otherwise is selling you something that does not exist.

Where to stay for the long weekend

If you picked KL, stay near KL Sentral and walk to everything; the KL Sentral hotel list is the right starting point. If you picked Penang, stay inside the heritage core rather than on the coast, and start from the George Town hotel list. Whichever you choose, sort the transport first: the KL to Penang trains and the things to do in Penang both fill up in the week before the festival.
