Terrabona Nature & Vineyards

My wife and I signed up to visit the Vineyard and enjoy the wine tasting experience. The location is just gorgeous, very private, a nice breeze from the ocean and high mountains surrounding the property. We enjoyed a very details 2 hours of wine tasting and food pairing with a very detailed explanation of the wine, the property and the area by Maria João. The wine produced by Marco and Maria João is highly rated and acclaimed. We had some bottles shipped back to the US for a reasonable fee. We would highly recommend this experience.

What a serene location with fabulous accommodation and hosts. It takes some finding - satnav is a must - but once you arrive you feel like you have found a little piece of heaven. Marco and Maria are relaxed, kind, entertaining and attentive hosts with a passion for their wonderful wines and rightly proud of the beautiful surroundings. While the accommodation is B&B - fresh eggs in your fridge each day and still warm bread delivered to your room each morning - Marco and Maria will also provide dinner a couple of times a week. It's simple and local fare, and may not suit everyone's taste, but with Marco and Maria as hosts, and a small number of other guests sharing a communal table, these evenings leave an indelible memory of intimacy and warmth. Lovely suites, with a neat but functional kitchenette, great shower and views from the villa and garden for winding down and enjoying moments of mindfulness. The pool and sauna are small but perfectly formed with glorious views to the sea. The beds, bed linen and toiletries are top notch and eco friendly. My wife loved the pillows so much, we found the only supplier on the island and brought one home! Go - you wont be disappointed.

I must admit to being hesitant about posting this review only because I want to keep this place a secret—staying at Terrabona Nature & Vineyards was one of the best travel experiences we’ve had, and I’m reluctant to let others in on the secret. But in this day and age, that seems futile, so here it goes: Firstly, the setting is absolutely breathtaking. As soon as you pull up to the property, you are struck by the design of the buildings and the landscaping, both arresting. The modern and minimalist architecture blends into the surrounding hills and slopes in ways that both complement and contrast, and the dark slate gray plays wonderfully off the colors of the surrounding nature. It’s immediately apparent that this is no ordinary place. Once on the property, with Marco showing us around, it becomes even more obvious how much care and consideration went into everything and that pattern continued during our five days there. Once we were settled in our villa, unpacked and beginning to unwind, more details started to reveal themselves, and not one was overlooked. Inside the villa, the Family Winehouse, the layout and design maintained the bar set by the exteriors of the buildings and property. There is a truly admirable amount of attention that went into the detail and the implementation of the designs. From the lighting fixtures, the wall switches, the trim around the doors and windows, to the cork flooring, kitchen cabinets, appliances, furniture—it’s clear that every detail was taken into consideration. I say this because some high-end accommodations advertise their properties as having the same kind of diligent and considered attention to detail but often fail in the little things, the smallest of things, but Terrabona delivers in every way. It’s a wonderful thing when it all just comes together, and I found myself spellbound by just taking it all in. And the guest experience was just as enjoyable, starting with the overall vibe in the villa and on the grounds. There is an incredibly relaxed atmosphere that, when coupled with Terrabona’s privacy and seclusion, allows for instant relaxation. We did not have to compete with other guests for a spot in the sun, for a lounge chair, for time in the sauna, for parking. We didn’t want for anything, and yet we never really saw the gears of Terrabona operations in action either. There was a seamless experience from hour to hour and day to day. It felt like it was our own place. We rarely saw the other guests. The most memorable experience with the other guests was at a Wednesday dinner, which all guests are invited to. There we were, three couples from different parts of the world, enjoying authentic home-cooked Portuguese cuisine, wines from the Terrabona Vineyard, and having wide-ranging conversations that never strayed too far, enjoying many laughs along the way. On our recent 2-week trip to Madeira for our 35th anniversary, my wife and I decided to stay in four different parts of the island, starting in the south and traveling north, staying a few nights at each location. After spending time in two hotels in Canico and Funchal, we headed to Boaventura and were immediately struck by the wild beauty of the North coast. Arriving at Terrabona we were met by the owner, Marco, who personally walked us through our tastefully appointed private villa perched on the side of a mountain adjacent to a vineyard with views to the sea. The sense of peace and tranquility was immediate. We were supplied with fresh eggs, yogurt, oranges and juicer and fresh bread from different bakeries left at our doorstep each morning. And an Espresso maker of course. If you need to get around at all, a car is necessary. But we were pretty content to hang around and eat and relax and read and drink Marco's wines. For stays longer than 3 days, dinner plans can be made. And we know Marco can cook, because he surprised us with lunch the day before we left. Did I mention the infinity pool and saunas clinging to the mountainside? The staff including Emanuel and Cristina were personable and professional. The attention to detail is present everywhere. All in all, the most special and unique part of our trip.

Que dire de plus ?? L’endroit est paradisiaque, Marco et Maria sont d’une gentillesse infinie tout est calme luxe et volupté… un rapport prix/prestations exceptionnel. Franchement tout est parfait dans les moindres détails: une cuisine équipée haut de gamme, un délicieux gâteau maison tous les jours. Tout simplement parfait !

4 nuits en juillet, pour la première saison de Terrabona en tant qu'hébergement par Marco et Maria - c'était le paradis ! Le cadre naturel, au milieu des vignes et des oiseaux, Les équipements, piscine et sauna, terrasse privée et grand appartement niché dans les pierres sans vis-à-vis, avec de beaux matériaux et une architecture d'intérieur soignée, Le service et l'hospitalité, avec une mention spéciale pour le petit déjeuner et son pain frais et ses fruits tous les jours différents. L'accueil de Marco et Maria et leur egagement dans ce magnifique projet, qui complète la production de vin et les dégustations (ce sont d'excellents cuisiniers aussi). Une réussite.
