This hotel is a bit hard to reach by public transport. There is a bus that stops closeby, but there is also a train, however, after that you have to walk for 20 minutes and the road can be quite steep in some parts. In the vicinity, there are some convenience stores and restaurants. The town of Hakone is beautiful and located close to mount Fuji. We had a lovely ryokan-style suite with twin beds. Everything was very clean and comfortable, including the pillows. Breakfast is buffet-style and offers both European and Asian food. There are both a public onsen and a private one. Staff is very friendly and speaks English very well.

This hotel is a historic property set in an iconic setting. We stayed in the Forest Section which features large, comfortable rooms that were a little dark, the bathroom lighting could be improved. Here is my issue. We arrived around 1:15 and we’re told that we could check in at 3:00. We had lunch in their cafe ( 50$) and asked again about an hour later if we could have early access. The very polite desk clerk replied “ Yes, for $70 dollars “. Astounded , I countered that we were departing early 2 days later, and he reduced the amount to $35. Now here is where communication becomes an issue: I continued the “are you kidding me?” and he kept bowing. I thought the issue was settled. That night and the next we ate at their lovely restaurants, French and the Cascade. Food and service was superb. With wine we spent about $900. Check out was early, and my husband didn’t really examine the bill. When we were back in our free early access room in Tokyo I noticed the $35 charge. I contacted the hotel’s customer service and they confirmed the charge. So, what about customer hospitality? I have NEVER been charged an early access fee for an hour. They have been times when we patiently waited for a room to be readied, and never demanded a rebate. It is all part of the guest/host agreement, I think this is probably a corporate decision by the Fujiya Group. Rethink your mission, guys, make guests feel wanted!

It was a perfect hotel stay for families visiting Hakone. The room was spacious for our family of three. Comfortable bed and well kept room amenities. The buffet breakfast and dinner food and drinks were delicious. We love our visit to the Hakone Kowakien Morinoyu which was included with our hotel stay.
The only thing I didn’t like was the checkin procedure. We had to use a machine to checkin instead of going to the checkin counter and have front desk staff processing for us. It was a terrible experience because the machine failed at recognising our passport and it was terribly hard to enter everyone’s details on the touch screen. I should have to do this myself as a guest. Please get rid of the machine check in.

Les difficultés de communication avec le staff au moment du check-in dans l’après-midi ne nous ont pas permis de trouver un restaurant pour le soir.
Le lendemain nous avons dîné à l’hôtel et le chef Ikuhiro Akazaki a été super avec le teppanyaki.

The staff was incredibly friendly and accommodating, the room was clean and comfortable, and the location was convenient for exploring the area. I would definitely recommend this hotel to others.

Right next to Gora station, which is an awesome after a day exploring Hakone Yumoto and coming up the Tozan train. Great kaiseki dinner and breakfast, Exploring the public onsen baths was really fun, with free snacks and icicles. Our room also had a great view overlooking Gora station and the mountains. Overall felt this was a really authentic Japanese onsen ryokan experience

One of the nicest hotel I've been to so far! The buffet breakfast selections are crazy, crabs for breakfast? Count me in! From my room, there's a crazy view of the Hakone valleys especially during sunsets.
The staff are very nice people who provided the best for my stay. I was celebrating my anniversary with my partner and they offered a free pass to the bar & lounge.
Would definitely come again the next time.

昨年と同じ1月５日に宿泊しました。部屋はいつも通り低層階の部屋。低層階は葉の落ちた庭の木々の間を通して、月や星、朝日が見えます。高層階は木々に邪魔されず周囲の山々の景観が楽しめます。４階以上は宿泊したことはありませんが、冬の低層階の景色は寂しさと、清々しさが感じられ、味があると思います。私は、もし、最初の宿泊が、YouTubeで見た山側の部屋だったら二度と来ていないと思います。春以降は木々の葉の中、森の中の温泉宿のような雰囲気で、また、別の味わいですが、私は冬が好きです。今回、Aiphoneを新型に変えたら、夜、庭と星が上手く撮れました。全体的には相変わらずの素晴らしさで満足しています。そんな中で敢えて気になったことを申し上げれば、毎回、食事の写真を撮っているのですが、受付時のお茶菓子は昨年と同じもの(もちろん満足してます)でした。事前に館内着のサイズを要望していて用意してもらったのですが、丹前?が小さく着れず、昨年はチョッキのような(何と言うかわかりません)館内着の上に着るものもなく(農民みたいにみえるからか?)、昨年、売店で買った館内着の最大サイズにはピンク色ぽい館内着を買ったのですが、部屋に用意された館内着は同じホワイトグレー?でした。(昨年も同色なので、男女で宿泊予約しても同色かもしれません。又はサイズにより数がない?) 年末に箱根湯本の他のホテルに泊まった時も同様でしたが、夕食の料理が、昨年より、小さかったり、量が少なくなっていると感じました。昨年宿泊時の写真と比べると、どうしても気になってしまいます。宿泊料金も昨年より上がっているような感覚で、料理が小さくなるのが気になりました。良かった点は、各所のスタッフさん達は相変わらず対応が良かったです。ノンアルの飲み物もエレベーター脇のところに多数あり良かったです。事前にSNS等で低い評価もありましたが、確かに、客がいるのに、スタッフ同士で小声の話し方で同僚に対する不満を言いあってるスタッフがいたり、食事処でスタッフ人数を絞っているのか、呼び鈴ボタン押してもすぐには来てもらえなかったりしましたが、私には許容範囲でした。私は、ここでSNSに乗っていたような目にはあったことがありません。今後も利用していきたいと思いました。最後に、ここで昨年買った館内着ですが、他の同じ共立リゾートだと「盗った」と思われそうなので着れませんが、他のホテルで使い、外国人観光客等に評判でした。他の温泉旅館等に泊まる時は常用しています。できれば常時各種サイズの色を揃えてもらいたいです。次回宿泊した際には、海外のお土産用に色があれば買いたいです。

I was seeking a ryokan with private onsens and the willingness to accommodate my primarily vegetarian dietary habits. I chose Hakone Gora Byakudan and was extremely pleased in every single way. We were a little on the early side (around 2:00 in the afternoon) when we asked someone at an information desk by Gora Station to please call the ryokan and ask if they could pick us up (as we had been instructed). Within 5 minutes we were picked up and brought to the beautiful ryokan, removing our shoes upon entry. The room was fantastic. We were in ”hako”, just off the lobby. The space was perfect! And we loved the privacy of the onsen. Both dinner and breakfast were served in a small private dining room. They indeed served me a vegetarian meal with many courses. My husband had some meat or fish in his meal and they provided us each with separate printed out menus. It was truly fantastic!

Pleasantly surprised by the large room we got, with an enclosed balcony overlooking the lush green valley. Spacious bathroom. Clean room. Excellent onsite onsen - enjoyed the experience. Lovely dining areas and sushi restaurant. Free pickup from Odawara Shinkansen station (45 min ride to hotel). Hotel offers free dropoff and pickup to local train station so you can comfortably take the cable car to Lake Ashi. Highly recommend the cable car, boat across Lake Ashi and Hakone's open air museum.

MMeng ChuanHad a delightful stay at the ryokan. The rooms are quite impeccable with the smell of the hinoki filling the room, it was quite heavenly.
We chose the room with the outdoor bath. And given the cool weather, our bathing experience was amazing.
The location was also perfect if you are making a trip to the Sengokuhara Susuki Pampas Grass fields, which is such a scenic spot and of which we enjoyed walked to and through in the setting sun.
We also opted to have dinner at the ryokan, who specially made it Halal-friendly for us.
What's most amazing to us regarding the ryokan was the service. We had a Nepalese staff speaking with us most of the time, as he was the best in English. He personally brought us to our room and even gave an introduction to the room, and what we needed to take note off. After we checked out, he enquired how we were making our way to the train station. There was conveniently located bus stop just outside the ryokan, so we were going to take that. On our way out, he drove out and stopped along the road beside us (good thing there was no traffic) and to our utter surprise offered to drive us to the train station. We found out that he was actually knocking off, but instead of going straight home to rest (before his next shift in the evening), he wanted to drive us to the station. We were exceptionally touched at his extremely kind gesture (as we didn't think it was hotel protocol to do so). Nonetheless, his actions left us a beautiful and lasting impression on the ryokan.
Would definitely go again for the luxurious experience!

PPengguna TetamuHad a large Japanese style room on the fifth floor. The place is characterful and the onsens feel original and charming. Being in our 60's futons and dining on the floor was probably not the best choice. There is no restaurant or bar so you dine in your room. There are a lot of courses, maybe 10, for both breakfast and dinner served in batches of about 3 at a time. We really enjoyed dinner the first night but less so the second - there is no choice so the individual dishes are to your taste or not. We didn't enjoy breakfast which is more like a small meal and not to our taste. The building is up on the side of a hill and the whole area in very hilly so not easily walkable. We had a car and went on the cablecar up to the lake.

Kerusi angsa merah yang terkenal dan sofa di dalam bilik tetamu penuh dengan rasa kontemporari. Kolam air panas dilengkapi sepenuhnya. Jangan risau tentang perjalanan yang bergelombang. Mata air panas dan makanan yang lazat serta-merta menghilangkan kepenatan hari itu. Satu-satunya kelemahan ialah jurang antara perkhidmatan lama dan baharu membawa perasaan yang sama sekali berbeza. Komunikasi bahasa adalah masalah biasa semasa melancong di Jepun, tetapi latihan hotel untuk pekerja baharu perlu diperkukuhkan dengan segera.

PPengguna TetamuThis ryokan is perfect for people who want to experience ryokan for the first time but want something cheaper within Hakone area. Situated on the main road with buses to Owakudani and train to Odawara. I'd recommend catching the bus from Odawara to this ryokan since the walking trail from the closest station to this place is hilly and has lots of stairs. Main road is not very luggage friendly so pack very light when you're staying here.
This place has very nice rooms with view to the river behind it. The view is spectacular when the entire river area is covered in red autumn leaves. Dinner and breakfast are very delicious, you will be served a range of traditional food from a la carte to dessert. You can also book your private indoor onsen FOR FREE. The ryokan also has an open outdoor onsen across the bridge for 3000 JPY.
The only downside of this place is the main road is very busy as it's the only way for people to drive from Odawara to Owakudani. So local people take this road to get to Owakudani. Buses from this place will not stop at there in the weekend. Your best plan is to go to Lake Ashi first and take the opposite route to Owakudani instead. Plan your trip in this area very carefully because a bus trip that would take 10-15 minutes will end up taking you 1 to 1.5 hours.

The rooms are quite average with odd steps down to the room and bathroom. Also the food at the hotel is not particularly good, we had breakfast and a dinner, which I would not recommend. The service was helpful, but I would not specifically recommend this hotel.

JjenniferbG4346QZThe location of this hotel is fantastic. It is just a few minutes walk to the Hakone shrine and tori gate on the water and about 15 minutes walk to the town by the water. From the town you can catch the pirate ship or ferry to the base of the cable car and head up the mountain to other attractions. The hotel grounds are lovely and full of pathways lined with Rhododendrum. The rooms are a great size and all have a view of the lake. I stayed on the third floor and in my opinion rooms on the third and fourth floors have a better view but the second floor rooms have a balcony and the first floor rooms have patios. The hotel provides yukatas and all toiletries you might need. The hotel onsen is small but nice and also has an outdoor bath. The hotel spa is very relaxing with a variety of services. I did not have dinner at the property but breakfast was very good. Every staff member I encountered was extremely professional, courteous and friendly. My only complaint is the mattress was very firm and I prefer some thing softer but that is a personal preference.

The room was large and very comfortable, the private bath was wonderful, the buffet breakfast was delicious (and offers a variety for vegetarians); in fact, it was our favorite part of our trip and we wish we could have stayed longer. The downside is the hotel dinner is expensive and not suitable for vegetarians, so the hike down the hill daily for meals (and then back up it) was a bit tiresome. Definitely book the free shuttle service to and from the hotel especially if you have luggage, the “hill” it is on is in fact several steep inclines that are difficult for those less than moderately fit. Another highlight was the hotel’s commitment to honoring the UN SDGs and striving to reduce plastic waste. There’s absolutely no reason in this day and age for people not to travel with their own toothbrush and combs. If you happen to need such amenities, they are available for nominal fees, barely worth complaining over, as many reviews did. This hotel may be pricey, but it’s so worth it, and they’re doing some good for the earth, so the stay comes with more feel good feelings. We are already planning our next stay here.

This was my first experience at a ryokan. I am so glad that my sister booked a traditional ryokan with a private Kaiseki dinner and breakfast. We also had our own onsen in the room. It was so very relaxing and beautiful. The whole experience put me back into the days of old Japan. I would love to stay here again! The staff does not speak much English but they do use a translator tool that makes it easy to converse and understand. The food was amazing! The sleep was amazing. The room was spacious and accommodated 4 adults. The onsen was so relaxing. The lobby and ryokan is gorgeous and well upkept! We did stay in a newly renovated room-Zuisan. They are very accommodating to your every need. I truly felt like I was in Old Japan. I want to go back again soon. (note: I will update with photos later as there are so many)

SSaschaAn overall very pleasant experience. I stayed there one weekend for two nights and another for three nights.
+ The hot spring bath is very cozy with a nice nature view. The Sauna was great.
+ I wasn't satisfied with one room and could change to another room with large balcony without questioning.
+ The view from the hotel is wonderful, especially during nice weather.
+ Great value for money.
- Dining in the hotel is only possible with reservation, arriving spontaneously for dinner is not possible.
- The bar was closed. But the Gora Brewery is only a 10-minute foot walk away.

PPengguna TetamuWe booked Hakone Airu under the expectation of taking part in an 'experience' and wanted to embrace all that we would be offered. Primarily, we were looking for a place to stay in the Hakone area with a private onsen and reasonably close to transport links. Hakone Airu delivered in all of these aspects and was a fantastic spot from which we could make use of the Hakone pass and explore the region. Directions upon booking were clear and advised taking a bus or taxi from the train station but we opted to walk the 15 minutes and take in the local shops. While the final stretch does climb uphill, if you are reasonably fit, it shouldn't be a problem. Check-in was very welcoming and after complimentary drinks, we were shown to our room which was perfect. The outside area with private onsen and views of the surrounding hills was divine and we enjoyed spending evenings 'soaking' in the atmosphere both figuratively and literally. This ticked every box in achieving the relaxing onsen experience we were looking for. Meals were plentiful. Breakfast was fit for a king and the western menu (with a Japanese nod) set us up for each day with full and satisfied stomachs. The evening meal was 'Kaiseki' which, as defined by Google, is ”a traditional multi-course Japanese dinner. The term also refers to the collection of skills and techniques that allow the preparation of such meals”. It is akin to a 'tasting menu' that you might expect in more elaborate Western restaurants. With that in mind, we fully expected a range of textures, tastes, colours and presentation that could challenge our palates. The meal did exactly that. Over ten, superbly presented courses, we sampled a range of meats, seafood and clever vegetable twists that both delighted and challenged our expectations. The Sashimi was a particular highlight along with the cleverly designed corn dish! A turban sea snail added to the adventure and is a great example of how the menu can push your expectations by providing foods you may not ordinarily opt for. Impressively, the menu was different each night and a delight to sample. Throughout our stay, the staff were outstanding: courteous, polite, helpful and went out of their way to accommodate. Thank you. We arrived at Hakone Airu with high hopes; these were achieved in every aspect. I would love to visit again and recommend it to anyone who is open to embracing everything on offer.
