Huangpu River Cruise Guide: Tickets, Prices & Best Time

Oleh Amal
10 September 2026

Planning your first Huangpu River Cruise in Shanghai? The experience is simple—but choosing the right ticket can be surprisingly confusing.
🌃 For most first-time Malaysian travellers: choose a standard night sightseeing cruise for Shanghai’s illuminated skyline.
🌅 For photographers: consider sunset, but only if the actual sailing time overlaps sunset.
☀️ For families and older travellers: daytime is often easier, calmer and more comfortable.
Before paying for any Huangpu River Cruise tickets, always check:
- 📍 Exact wharf and terminal
- ⏰ Reporting and departure time
- 🕒 Sailing duration
- 🌬️ Outdoor-deck access
- 🛂 Passport and voucher requirements
- 💰 Final price in MYR

🤔 Is the Huangpu River Cruise worth it?
For most first-time visitors, yes—but it is not a must-do for absolutely everyone.
You can already see the famous Pudong skyline for free from The Bund, so why pay for a cruise?
Because the experience is different.
From the river, you get a moving panorama of both sides of Shanghai:
🏛️ Puxi: historic Bund buildings
🏙️ Pudong: futuristic Lujiazui skyscrapers
Instead of looking at Pudong from one fixed viewpoint, the skyline changes continuously as the boat moves.

👍 Who is the cruise especially worth it for?
- First-time Shanghai visitors
- Couples
- Photographers
- Families who want less walking
- Travellers with limited sightseeing time
- Anyone who wants both Puxi and Pudong views at once
👎 Who may want to skip it?
- Travellers on a very tight budget
- Visitors travelling during poor visibility
- Anyone already visiting several observation decks
- Travellers who only want to cross the river quickly
🚢 Huangpu River Cruise vs The Bund vs public ferry
Experience | Cost | Time on water | Best feature | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Huangpu River sightseeing cruise | Paid | Usually around 45–60 mins | Moving views of both riverbanks | First-time sightseeing, couples, photos |
The Bund walk | Free | None | Classic Pudong viewpoint | Budget travellers |
Public ferry | Very low cost | Short crossing | Quick river-level view | Transport between Puxi and Pudong |
Observation deck | Paid | None | High panoramic view | Aerial city views |
💡 Bottom line: the public ferry is a cheap river crossing. It is not the same experience as a sightseeing cruise.
If you only want to get from one riverbank to the other, take the ferry.
If you want to relax, photograph the skyline and spend meaningful time on the Huangpu River, take the cruise.
🌇 Day, Sunset or Night: What Is the Best Time for a Huangpu River Cruise?
There is no single best time for everyone.
Your ideal sailing depends on who you are travelling with, what you want to see and how important photography is to you.
☀️ Choose daytime for architecture, families and easier timing
A daytime cruise makes it easier to see details on the Bund buildings, bridges and Pudong towers.
It is a good choice for:
👨👩👧 Families with young children
👵 Travellers with older parents
📷 Architecture lovers
🕐 Travellers who prefer an earlier schedule
🥶 People who dislike cold night wind
Daytime also makes photography easier because you have fewer reflections from indoor glass.
Trade-off: you miss Shanghai’s famous illuminated night skyline.
🌅 Choose sunset for the best photography potential
Sunset can give you three visual experiences in one trip:
☀️ Daylight
🌆 Blue hour
🌃 City lights
Sounds perfect, right?
There is one catch.
⚠️ A ticket labelled “evening” or “sunset” does not necessarily mean your boat will be sailing during sunset.
Always compare:
Your actual departure time → Shanghai sunset time on your travel date
If sunset is at 6:20 PM but your departure is assigned at 7:30 PM, you are effectively taking a night cruise.
🌃 Choose night for the classic Shanghai experience
For most first-time visitors, a Huangpu River Cruise at night is the easiest recommendation.
Why?
Because Shanghai looks dramatically different after dark.
✨ The historic Bund buildings glow along Puxi.
🏙️ Lujiazui’s skyscrapers light up across Pudong.
🌊 City lights reflect across the Huangpu River.
This is the image most travellers associate with Shanghai.
However, do not assume every building will always be fully illuminated. Lighting schedules can change due to maintenance, weather, events or local policies.
📊 Which cruise time suits you?
Traveller | Best time | Why | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
First-time visitor | 🌃 Night | Classic Shanghai skyline | More crowds |
Couple | 🌃 Night / 🌅 Sunset | Romantic atmosphere | Sunset timing can be uncertain |
Photographer | 🌅 Sunset | Multiple lighting conditions | Timing must match |
Family with preschool child | ☀️ Day | Easier schedule | No full night lights |
Family with older children | ☀️ / Early night | Good balance | Evening crowds |
Older parents | ☀️ Day | Easier visibility and timing | Less dramatic |
Cold-sensitive traveller | ☀️ Day | Less night wind exposure | Weather still matters |
Short layover | ☀️ Day | Easier planning | Less atmospheric |
Poor visibility | ❌ Reconsider | Cruise value drops | Flexible booking helps |
🎟️ Which Huangpu River Cruise Ticket Should You Choose?
This is where many travellers get confused.
Two products can both be called “Huangpu River Cruise” but provide very different experiences.
A lower price does not automatically mean you found a bargain.
It may be a different:
- 🚢 Route
- ⏱️ Duration
- 🌃 Departure time
- 🛳️ Vessel
- 🌬️ Deck
- 💺 Seating arrangement
- 🍽️ Meal package
- 🎧 Guide or narration option
- ❌ Cancellation policy
🚢 Standard sightseeing cruise
This is the best starting point for most Malaysian travellers.
Standard cruises commonly focus on the central Huangpu River skyline and often last around 45–60 minutes, depending on the specific route.
Before booking, confirm:
✅ Exact route
✅ Exact terminal
✅ Sailing duration
✅ Day/night period
✅ Outdoor-deck access
✅ Cancellation terms
For a first visit, this is usually all you need.
⚡ Express or short cruise
A short or express ticket can be cheaper.
But ask why it is cheaper.
It may mean:
- Less time on the river
- A shorter route
- Different scenery
- Different sailing hours
💡 Compare the actual route and duration—not only the headline price.
⭐ Premium deck, VIP or fast-entry ticket
Words such as VIP, premium and upper deck sound attractive, but they do not always mean the same thing.
Before paying extra, ask:
🌬️ Do I get guaranteed outdoor-deck access?
💺 Do I get a reserved seat?
🚶 Do I skip any queue?
🥤 Are drinks included?
📷 Is the viewing position actually better?
If the upgrade does not give you a meaningful advantage, the standard ticket may offer better value.
🍽️ Dining cruise
A dining cruise should be treated as a different product, not simply a better version of the standard cruise.
You may get:
🍴 Buffet or set meal
⏱️ Longer sailing time
💺 Dining seating
💰 Higher ticket price
For Muslim Malaysian travellers, do not assume food is halal because it is vegetarian, seafood or pork-free.
These descriptions are not the same as halal certification.
Before booking a meal cruise, look for:
✅ Current halal certification
✅ Written confirmation of ingredients
✅ Information about kitchen preparation
✅ Cross-contact information where relevant
If halal status cannot be properly verified, the safer option is:
🚢 Book a sightseeing-only cruise + 🍴 eat at a separately verified halal restaurant.
🧑🏫 Guided or private package
A guided or private bundle can be useful if you want more support.
Possible inclusions include:
- English-speaking guide
- Hotel pickup
- Private transfer
- Shanghai city tour
- Attraction combination
- Small-group experience
Check carefully whether the actual cruise ticket is included.
Also verify the guide language, pickup location, group size and cancellation terms.
💰 How Much Does the Huangpu River Cruise Cost in RMB and MYR?
There is no single fixed Huangpu River Cruise price.
Prices can change according to:
📅 Date
☀️ Day vs night
🚢 Route
⭐ Ticket level
🍽️ Meal inclusions
🎟️ Promotion
📱 Booking platform
As a rough reference, standard products may appear around the RMB100–150 range, while upgraded, premium or dining products can cost significantly more.
At a reference exchange rate of roughly RMB1 ≈ RM0.61, examples look like this:
RMB | Approx. MYR |
|---|---|
RMB100 | RM61 |
RMB120 | RM73 |
RMB150 | RM91 |
RMB200 | RM122 |
RMB300 | RM183 |
⚠️ These are only conversion examples—not guaranteed ticket prices.
Your bank, card or booking platform may use a different exchange rate.
🚨 Be careful with very cheap “from RMXX” prices
This is one of the biggest booking traps.
You may see:
“Huangpu River Cruise from RM35”
and another ticket for:
RM80–RM100
That does not necessarily mean the second seller is overpriced.
The cheaper ticket could have:
- A shorter route
- Daytime-only access
- Limited dates
- Promotional inventory
- Different terminal
- Different deck access
- No refund
- Additional charges at checkout
💡 Compare like with like.
Before paying, compare the same:
date + sailing period + route + terminal + duration + deck + ticket type
📍 Where Do You Board the Huangpu River Cruise?
This is one of the most important things to understand.
🚢 Shiliupu Wharf is not one universal boarding door

Many visitors see the words “Shiliupu Wharf” and assume there is one entrance.
That can cause problems.
Shiliupu has different terminal areas, and individual products may specify different:
🎟️ Ticket-exchange points
🔐 Security entrances
🚢 Boarding terminals
⚓ Berths
Useful Chinese map terms include:
Shiliupu Pier: 十六铺码头
Shiliupu Pier No. 1: 十六铺游船1号码头
Shiliupu Pier No. 2: 十六铺游船2号码头
📱 These Chinese names can be useful when searching on Chinese map apps or showing your destination to a DiDi driver.
📍 What about Jinling East Road?

Some products may use Jinling East Road or other departure points rather than the Shiliupu terminal you expected.
That is why the most important rule is:
👉 Your booking voucher controls where you go.
Do not simply search “Huangpu River Cruise” and follow the first map pin.
Instead, look on your voucher for:
- 🎟️ Ticket exchange point
- 🔐 Security entrance
- 🚢 Boarding terminal
- ⚓ Boarding berth
- ⏰ Reporting time
These may not all be the same place.
🛂 How to Book Huangpu River Cruise Tickets with a Malaysian Passport
Booking is usually straightforward, but foreign visitors should pay attention to traveller details.
✅ Booking checklist
1. Choose your experience
Decide whether you want daytime, sunset, night, premium or dining.
2. Check the exact product
Compare the route, wharf, duration and deck access.
3. Enter your name carefully
Use your passport name exactly as required by the booking platform.
4. Enter passport details if requested
Some products require passport information during booking or ticket collection.
5. Check child-ticket rules
Policies may use age, height or both.
6. Check your payment currency
Confirm whether you are paying in RMB, MYR or another currency.
7. Save everything offline 📱
Keep copies of:
- Confirmation email
- QR code
- Voucher
- Booking number
- Wharf address
8. Bring your original passport 🛂
If the selected ticket requires identification, bring the original document specified in the booking terms.
9. Follow the reporting time
Do not arrive only at the scheduled sailing time.
⏰ How Early Should You Arrive, and How Long Does the Cruise Take?

Do not make this common mistake:
“The cruise is 45 minutes, so I only need 45 minutes.”
You may also need time for:
🎟️ Voucher exchange
🔐 Security
🚶 Walking to the correct berth
👥 Queuing
🚢 Boarding
🕒 Waiting for departure
🚶 Disembarkation
🚇 Walking back to transport
For a popular night sailing, reserving approximately 90 minutes or more for the overall experience can be much more practical than scheduling another attraction immediately after the advertised cruise duration.
Your ticket's official reporting time always takes priority.

We have an excellent experience here in this hotel.
Such a wonderful trip in shanghai.
We went to swimming pool, gym. All the facilities are so good.
The room is bigger than my expectations.
Also, the staff are absolutely perfect. Kindness, well attitude with excellent services.
If I have a chance next time i definitely choose this hotel again.

The hotel boasts an excellent location: Xintiandi, the largest Starbucks, the Bund, and Jiefangbei are all within walking distance. The sheer scale and beauty of the lobby are immediately impressive.
The breakfast spread was superb – truly enjoyable with something for everyone. The rooms are spotless and well-maintained, though the interior design feels a bit dated (for instance, it took some time to figure out how to switch the water from the faucet to the shower). We were also surprised by the very old model of television, which seemed quite unexpected.
Overall, we were very pleased with our stay at the hotel.DariRM522

Traveling with Marriott rarely disappoints, and our recent family trip to Shanghai was no exception. The hotel's location is excellent, right across from New World and the Radisson revolving restaurant, and next to Shanghai No.1 Department Store. There are plenty of great restaurants nearby, and Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street (Shimao Plaza) is just a 5-minute walk away, offering fantastic night views. Breakfast was also very generous, and the mini wontons were delicious! 😊DariRM690

Nestled on the bustling Huaihai Road, Garden Hotel offers a slice of old Shanghai's French romance. This century-old building, with its sprawling gardens, is a hidden gem amidst the urban buzz. As sunlight dances across the vintage corridors and you stroll through the garden lawns, time seems to slow down.
My friends from Beijing, who stayed here with their child, were absolutely delighted. The expansive garden is perfect for little ones to explore, offering a tranquil and peaceful environment. The hotel masterfully blends European charm with Japanese attentiveness. Every brick and tile tells a story, making it a uniquely elegant spot in Shanghai, and perfectly suited for family getaways.DariRM467

Jing'an District/West Nanjing Road Shanghai|0.85km dari pusat bandar
My friend was only staying in Shanghai for a day, so naturally, I wanted to give her an itinerary that offered both 'old-world charm and new-age chic.' While passing Nanjing West Road recently, this InterContinental 'Luxury Collection' hotel immediately caught my eye. And just as I expected, critical as she is, she complimented my taste the moment she walked in.
Its most appealing features are its convenient location and its ability to be a tranquil oasis amidst the bustle: step outside, and you're on the vibrant Nanjing Road; turn around, and you're in the quiet serenity of a residential area. My friend said the elevator decor instantly made her feel like she'd 'traveled through time,' and that unique 'Haitian style' evoked long-lost memories of Shanghai. She had originally come to sightsee but happily spent most of her day lingering at the hotel.
What she loved most were the terrace and the restaurant. On a summer evening, the breeze felt just like those childhood nights spent cooling off in the alleyways – she used to live in a Shikumen house. She remarked, 'If only I could lie in a wicker chair, fan myself with a palm-leaf fan, eat watermelon, and watch an outdoor movie, that would be truly divine.' She also adored the red hanging ornament in the lobby; it was vibrantly bright, yet its glass texture gave it a lively feel, much like Shanghai's character – passionate yet steady, with a touch of lightness within its composure.
The food did not disappoint either. I pushed her to try the Shiqipu Noodle Restaurant, where the owner asked in Shanghainese, 'Mi dao ai hao fa?' (Is the taste good?), and she smiled and replied, 'Authentic,' instantly tearing up. She specifically bought the sweet variety of butterfly pastries from the International Hotel – saying 'only sweet is truly Shanghai.' Her only regret was: having stayed in too many foreign-style grand hotels, this time, with Shanghai elements everywhere and Shanghai flavors in every bite, it was 'just missing the sound of Shanghai.' Perhaps the cicada chirps in the alleyways and the hawkers' cries from the Shikumen are the hometown sounds she truly yearns to hear.
However, she has already declared: the next time she returns, this will be her chosen hotel, and she plans to visit all the routes I arranged. I believe the charm of Shanghai has never been in its superficial glamour but in its ability to always find the most fitting way to blend East and West, ancient and modern, living as a unique 'Haipai' (Shanghai style). This is also the root that every Shanghainese person cherishes.
Below are the three half-day itinerary options I created for her, which I've also compiled here, hoping they might help someone else:
Option 1 · A Stroll Through Old Shanghai Charm
Start from the hotel's main entrance on Fengyang Road and turn into Huanghe Road. The Changjiang Building and Changjiang Theater were the last residences of Eileen Chang; Huanghe Road is the origin of 'Blossoms Shanghai' (Fan Hua). The International Hotel is where her mother and aunt once stayed; next to it, the Sports Museum is rumored to be where Eileen Chang used to study. Diagonally opposite is the History Museum (formerly the Racecourse); the East Wing houses the old bronze lions from the HSBC Building on the Bund, and the 'Echoes of Shanghai' exhibition in the West Wing happens to talk about the past of Fengyang Road. The ornate windows of the West Wing and the Changjiang Building, mirroring the hotel's architecture, perfectly showcase the most fashionable Art Deco style of the 1930s.
Option 2 · Tracing Red Memories
Walk along Chengdu North Road to the Secretariat of the China Labor Movement, to see how Shanghai workers united into a revolutionary force; then visit the former site of the Songpu Special Committee. Go to the Sihang Warehouse to hear the echoes of the Battle of Shanghai and see the bullet-riddled walls recount the tragedy of that year. At night, turn into Xiang Kang Li on Xinchang Road to find the former site of the CCP Central Committee's secret printing press; on Nanjing West Road, there is also the former site of the Soviet Liaison Office, where, amidst the flickering lights, memories of the past reside.
Option 3 · Modern and Retro Collision
The LV 'Big Boat' on Nanjing West Road is currently a popular spot for photos; after visiting, turn into Wujiang Road for shopping and dining, and further ahead is Zhangyuan Shikumen – where new trends emerge in old alleyways, perfect for capturing stunning photos.
Food Tips
· The hotel restaurant's afternoon tea set is exquisite and picture-perfect.
· Shiqipu Noodle Restaurant (the owner's Shanghainese is a living signboard).
· Deda Western Restaurant and Gongdelin Noodle Restaurant, each with its own charm.
· Donghai Small Restaurant (authentic Ningbo cuisine).
· Chongming cuisine on the second floor of the hotel, authentic local flavors.
· International Hotel butterfly pastries, remember to choose the sweet ones.
Though the day was short, the essence of Shanghai will give her much to savor. When she returns next time, we'll continue our journey.DariRM579

The hotel is good, and getting around is convenient. The room is a bit small, but perfectly adequate. The main advantage is its excellent location for exploring. It's easy to find from Exit 7 of Yuyuan Metro Station, and very close to Yuyuan Garden and Chenghuang Temple. The Bund is just a ten-minute walk away. The only downside is the lack of a dedicated concierge service. When picking up stored luggage, there's no one specifically assigned to it, so you have to wait until someone finishes checking in other guests. I hope they can improve this, or perhaps the front desk could contact someone else to retrieve luggage, as the waiting time can be quite long. The front desk is on the 7th floor, and the elevator is also slow. Breakfast is just okay; it's better to order delivery. The Dahuchun shengjian (pan-fried buns) are good and delivered quickly.DariRM531

The hotel is well-located, right in the middle of the pedestrian street. We stayed in a standard room, but after our flight was canceled due to a typhoon, we extended our stay for another day and were moved to an upgraded room. The room was fantastic, we were probably lucky. It had two rooms: a living room with a sofa and a magnificent view of the pedestrian street. Besides a tea set, there was also a coffee machine. There was also a large, separate bathroom. It's an ideal option for a family with a child. The breakfasts are very good, with options for both children and adults. The only thing I didn't notice was an omelet station; there were fried eggs and scrambled eggs instead. But you won't go hungry; a delicious and hearty breakfast is guaranteed.DariRM481

The hotel was exceptionally clean and tidy. It was recommended by my foreign colleagues for my business trip to Shanghai. The surrounding area is bustling, located in the core business district of Jing'an Temple, making it very convenient for subway travel, shopping, and sightseeing. The bedding in the room was soft and comfortable, and the soundproofing was excellent, ensuring a good night's rest for my business trip. I happened to be there during a typhoon with heavy rain in Shanghai, and I particularly appreciate the doorman who promptly helped with my luggage. Decent stay, but several misses for a 5-star property
My stay at the Pullman Shanghai Central was a mixed bag—nice in some areas, but disappointing in others.
Check-in: The staff were very friendly and welcoming on our first day. However, I was surprised that they wouldn't let me check in until 3:00 PM. At most other hotels, I'm usually able to get an early check-in (even if I arrive at noon), so this felt a bit rigid for a property of this level.
The Room: The room itself was comfortable—the bed was soft and the shower pressure was actually perfect (not too strong, not too weak, just right). Unfortunately, the room smelled strongly of cigarette smoke upon arrival. To their credit, when I called the front desk, they immediately offered to change my room, which was very professional of them.
Breakfast: This was the biggest letdown. The breakfast buffet felt more like what you'd expect from a 3-star hotel rather than a 5-star Pullman. The quality and selection just weren't there for me.
Overall: It was an okay stay—nothing terrible, but nothing exceptional either. I wouldn't rate it a 10/10, more like a solid 6. Good service from the staff, but the check-in policy, smoke issue, and food really held it back.DariRM431

This is my second time at the Ritz-Carlton Pudong, and the facilities are, as expected, top-notch. Since I have a flight to the UK in two days, I decided to spend both days fully enjoying the hotel experience. The concierge team thoughtfully prepared extra bottled water for me in advance, and also gifted me a little lion charm and a personalized room key. The handwritten card was a truly warm and sincere touch, showing they remembered details I had mentioned, and they even helped me with restaurant reservations. Actions speak louder than words—just look at the photos! Honestly, the pictures online didn't particularly grab me (they were just okay). I booked the hotel simply wanting a relaxing break, and it totally exceeded my expectations! The hotel environment is fantastic. Even with the rain, it didn't detract from the beauty; if anything, it enhanced the therapeutic vibe. A unique touch was using the room key to tap a jade stone by the door to enter. The hotel has so many thoughtful little service details. In the morning, they subtly leave a warm 'good morning' drink outside your door. In the evening, there's a turndown service with snacks and hot tea—very considerate! The room is gorgeous. It's a shame it was raining and a bit hot outside, so I didn't get to relax on the balcony. Otherwise, enjoying a drink out there with the view would have been lovely. The salmon and shrimp at the buffet were both fresh and delicious. The afternoon tea at the executive lounge had the same desserts as the buffet. The desserts really showed some skill, especially the Basque cheesecake, which had a wonderfully moist and smooth texture. Even though it was the Dragon Boat Festival, there were quite a few people attending classes, but most were very well-behaved, and the class atmosphere was quite immersive.DariRM774

Traveling alone with four children, I booked a tatami room at Hyakuman-goku. The room was larger than expected, and the hotel has a beautiful view. The best part, however, was the service. All the staff were incredibly gentle, attentive, warm, meticulous, and patient. They proactively and promptly met all our needs (extra yukata, extra bath towels, extra toiletries, extra slippers, even carrying my 50+ lb child upstairs...).
The hotel's shuttle bus to Disney was very comfortable, clean, and convenient.

Upon check-in, we received two bath salts and a bathtub liner. The bath salts' scent was barely noticeable due to the large size of the tub. The air conditioning in the room had a dehumidifying function, so it never felt damp after a soak.
Environment: The hotel is surrounded by several buildings, making it very quiet and private. It has its own small Japanese garden, perfect for photos and feeding fish.
Location: It's about a 15-20 minute walk from Zhenbei Road Station on Metro Line 13. It's close to Zhonghuan Bailian, so dining and ordering takeout are very convenient. There's even a Metro store right across the street!DariRM407

The hotel room facilities are good, with everything that should be there. The smoking area outside is also very beautiful. The breakfast in the morning is very good, it is self-service, and there are freshly made noodles to eat. If you are thirsty, you can go downstairs at any time to have some drinks and fruits, which are all included in the hotel package. Why the deduction? Like many reviews wrote, the water in the pool here is really too hot. It is the hottest of all the hot springs in Shanghai that I have been to. It feels too hot. I saw that several children could hardly soak in the water for a while. I don’t know why so many people complained. I saw that the management was still saying in the comments that it met the hot spring temperature requirements. What they said is that your water is too hot, and they are giving you suggestions. Everyone in the hot spring said that the water was hot, not that you violated any regulations... It takes talent to reply like thisDariRM226

Shanghai Disney Resort Shanghai|18.67km dari pusat bandar
I visited Qianyun after looking at dozens of places in the area. I wanted to be away from typical city area, have a bathtub and nice outdoor area, and with easy access to Shanghai Disneyland. Qianyun met all those requirements and more! The location was immediately very serene and surrounded by forest, but still easy to access lots of waimai food delivery options. They were also very kind and proactive about sharing information about local restaurants and activities, and provide a breakfast and evening fruit every day. They offer free car transport to Disneyland, and I was excited to use this service but I ended up enjoying my time at the hotel so much that I opted to stay and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere instead! The hotel pets are so friendly - within five minutes the little cat Banban was on my lap and purring.
The room itself is decorated very nicely with all the amenities you need. The bathtub inside is very comfortable and I loved the outdoor hot spring tub as well. The attention to hygiene is very highly emphasized and I was impressed with how clean and luxurious everything felt.
I will definitely visit again and recommend to anyone hoping to have a convenient getaway from the city, or who would like to be near to Disneyland Resort while also experiencing a more peaceful area and for a good economical value and high quality service!
Thankyou for the wonderful stay, I felt very welcome at all times.DariRM481

We chose this hotel for our couple's getaway, and we were very satisfied with the overall quality. The hotel boasts a great design, and both the public areas and guest rooms are well-maintained. Our room was comfortable and quiet, with excellent views. The breakfast was plentiful and of good quality. The service was attentive and professional, with staff responding promptly to our needs. I've always wanted to experience The Portman Ritz-Carlton, Shanghai. After all, the hotel's location is truly unbeatable, and as a fan of The Ritz-Carlton, I had certain expectations for its service.
First off, the location is truly beyond words. It's right in the heart of West Nanjing Road, with Plaza 66, the Exhibition Center, and Kerry Center just outside the door. Shopping and dining are incredibly convenient.
Secondly, I specifically booked a room with Executive Lounge benefits, and as expected, The Ritz-Carlton's executive privileges were exceptional. Besides five meals a day (the evening canapés were especially good), I also made use of the luxury car pick-up and drop-off service within a 2-kilometer radius of the hotel.
Finally, I must especially highlight the hotel's service. Although the hotel's facilities are showing their age and can't compare to many newly opened hotels, the overall service truly added a lot of value. I'd like to extend a special thanks to Audrey, the Assistant Front Office Manager, who was incredibly kind, efficient, and thoughtful. She perfectly arranged all the needs for our stay with a child. Coincidentally, it was Qixi Festival (Chinese Valentine's Day), and she thoughtfully sent flowers, which absolutely enhanced the romantic atmosphere.
In summary, great location, excellent service, and a comfortable stay. I will definitely be back!DariRM664

Whenever I'm in Shanghai for business, I always choose Citadines Hongqiao Centre on West Yan'an Road. I've gotten used to staying here. The front desk service is very attentive; they always arrange my room in advance, which saves me a lot of time. If I have returns that need to be mailed, they're happy to help, and once, when I left something behind, they even kept it safe for me – so thoughtful! The overall stay is very comfortable, just like being at home. Highly recommended!DariRM214

I've been staying at the Peace Hotel for ten years now. I've celebrated my proposal, anniversaries, and birthdays here, and now with the birth of my child, we still come back every year for birthdays or anniversaries. This year, after moving abroad, I brought my family back to visit and chose the Peace Hotel again. The service has improved even further. From the moment we entered, the bellhops and front desk staff were incredibly attentive. We arrived at 10:30 AM, and because we had two young children, one only 10 months old, the front desk allowed us to check in early to rest. They then arranged for a baby cot, bathtub, bottle warmer, children's toiletries, and baby care products. Every interaction showed incredible care and attention to detail. I'm so grateful to all the staff for helping us have a perfect holiday. Finally, a special shout-out to the greeters at the entrance. Because there are so many tourists wanting to come in and look around, they constantly have to ask if people are guests or dining. The doors were almost constantly opening and closing, and questions being asked throughout the evening. Thank you!DariRM1,371

Although the hotel has been open for a while, it's very well-maintained. The room was meticulously cleaned, with no obvious dust even in the corners. The amenities were easy to use; the shower had great water pressure, and the hot water temperature could be perfectly adjusted. The air conditioning was also individually controllable to my preferred temperature.
This time, I tried the AI smart sleep-aid bed. I was skeptical at first, but after turning it on, I really did fall into a deep sleep very quickly. There was no noise at night either (haha, the benefit of being on a high floor).
I skipped breakfast because I wanted to sleep in, but I'll definitely try it next time! 😏

An unexpectedly great stay! Since we were traveling with a small baby, the hotel upgraded us to a suite for free. It came fully equipped with a playpen and a crib. The suite itself was very spacious, and having a separate living room and bedroom was incredibly practical. We also took our baby to the hotel pool, and the water was very clean. The breakfast spread was incredibly rich, and we tried two of the hotel's restaurants, both of which were excellent. We'll definitely choose this hotel again on our next visit.DariRM1,132

Let's start with the positives: the restaurant service was excellent, and breakfast was decent. The river view from the higher floors is fantastic, definitely worth it for the price. Make sure to get a high-floor room. The lounge staff on the 32nd floor were also very good, and the room itself was spacious and bright. The housekeeping staff were pleasant too.
Now, let's talk about the other experiences: They said check-in was at 3 PM, but when I arrived at 5 PM, I still had to stand at the front desk for over ten minutes while they sorted out a room. I had booked a twin-bed room with a river view, but the first room they gave me was on a low floor, looking out onto rooftops. Did I travel all this way to stare at roofs? I insisted on a room change, and eventually, they offered a king bed with an extra bed. So, I'm not sure if that's a good or bad solution, you can judge for yourselves.DariRM697

I came to Shanghai for a weekend getaway. I originally booked a Deluxe Twin Room, but the front desk offered to upgrade me to a Club Suite since I was only staying one night, which was a pleasant surprise for my trip.
The room decor was high-quality, with a warm and comfortable color scheme. The corner sofa in the suite's living room felt just like home. Staying on the 47th floor, the view was unobstructed; Jing'an Temple's golden roof was right below, and I could even see the Suzhou IFS.
Kerry Centre, with my favorite RRL, was right downstairs. For breakfast, I went to the Club Lounge restaurant on the 55th floor. It wasn't crowded, and they offered a buffet with à la carte options – delicious!DariRM979

For our family trip, we chose the Waldorf Astoria's new building river-view room. Our dedicated concierges, Aaron and Brin, meticulously considered every detail for our family outing, providing practical suggestions for local attractions and responding to our requests efficiently and effectively. Fantastic stay in this hotel with spectacular view! The unique cliff view is definitely worth every penny! We have chosen a room with direct view to the waterfall. As our stay was on a Friday, the waterfall was not available which is bit to our disappointment. But waking up this morning (Sat), the waterfall is on. So nice! And so lucky we can catch the chance to take some more photos! At night, there is a lighting show in the open cliff area. So we taken our dinner out the balcony to enjoy the light show. Nice activity at night!
The service of this hotel tops all experiences with hotels. When I checked in, the staff asked if can add my WeChat account for instant customer service purposes. Then I received tips for the nearby travel spots, dining assistance, caring services such as asking me if needs to take my food delivery up to the room for me and asking if I need another taller pillow etc.
The complementary fruit platter and dessert and some freebie at time of checkout are indeed a bonus surprise.DariRM925

The location is unbeatable. It's super convenient – just take the escalator up to the second floor from the Purple Vine Road metro station exit towards MixC, and you'll see the hotel. It would be even better if there was a convenience store nearby. The hotel environment is also excellent, with large floor-to-ceiling windows that provide amazing natural light in the morning. 📸 Where Should You Sit or Stand for the Best Views?

There is no universal “best side” of every boat.
The vessel moves and turns, so your viewing direction changes.
Instead, focus on deck access.
🌬️ Outdoor deck
Best for:
📸 Photography
🌃 Clear night views
🎥 Video
Main disadvantages:
💨 Wind
🌧️ Rain exposure
👥 Crowds
🪟 Indoor cabin
Best for:
👵 Older travellers
👶 Young children
🥶 Cold weather
🌧️ Rain
Main disadvantage:
Night photographs through glass can suffer from strong reflections.
📱 Quick photography tips
- Clean your phone camera lens before boarding
- Avoid bright indoor lights behind you when shooting through glass
- Hold your phone steady in night mode
- Do not lean dangerously over railings
- Avoid blocking stairs and walkways
- Move around as the viewing angle changes
👨👩👧 Is the Cruise Suitable for Children and Older Parents?
Generally, a sightseeing cruise can work very well for multigenerational families.
But check the specific vessel and terminal.
👶 Travelling with children?
Check:
- Child ticket rules
- Stroller policy
- Toilet availability
- Seating
- Deck barriers
- Boarding queues
- Night departure time
An earlier cruise may be much easier with preschool children.
👵 Travelling with older parents?
Consider:
☀️ Daytime or early evening
💺 Seating availability
🚶 Walking distance to the terminal
🛗 Lift availability
🌬️ Wind exposure
🚻 Toilet access
The most beautiful night departure is not necessarily the most comfortable option for every family.
♿ What About Wheelchair Access?
Do not rely only on a general attraction label saying “wheelchair accessible”.
Accessibility can vary between:
📍 Terminal entrance
🎟️ Ticket counter
🔐 Security area
🚢 Boarding ramp
🛳️ Vessel
🌬️ Outdoor deck
If wheelchair access matters to your group, confirm the entire boarding journey with the operator or booking platform before paying.
☪️ What Muslim Travellers Should Know About Dining Cruises
This deserves special attention for Malaysian travellers.
❌ “No pork” does not automatically mean halal
Neither do:
🐟 Seafood-only
🥬 Vegetarian
🍜 Meat-free dishes
Halal suitability may depend on:
- Ingredient sourcing
- Meat certification
- Sauces
- Alcohol
- Cooking process
- Kitchen cross-contact
✅ Safest approach
If the cruise operator cannot provide reliable current halal information:
Book the sightseeing cruise without a meal.
Then eat at a separately verified halal restaurant before or after your sailing.
This gives you more control and usually more dining choices too. 🍽️
🗺️ How to Fit the Cruise into Your First Shanghai Itinerary
A good itinerary avoids unnecessary backtracking across the river.
🏮 Option 1: Yu Garden → Old City → Night Cruise
A very logical half-day plan.
Afternoon: Yu Garden and Old City
⬇️
Early dinner
⬇️
Walk / DiDi to your exact Shiliupu terminal
⬇️
🌃 Huangpu River night cruise
This works especially well because the attractions are all on the Puxi side.
🛍️ Option 2: Nanjing Road → The Bund → Night Cruise
Another excellent first-timer route.
🛍️ East Nanjing Road
➡️
🚶 Walk towards The Bund
➡️
📷 Enjoy Pudong views from land
➡️
🚶 Continue south towards your cruise terminal
➡️
🚢 Take the night cruise
You see the skyline twice—but from completely different perspectives.
🏙️ Option 3: Lujiazui observation deck + cruise
This can be impressive, but it may also feel repetitive.
An observation deck gives you:
⬆️ Height
🌆 Wide aerial panorama
A river cruise gives you:
🌊 Movement
🏙️ Close skyline views
🏛️ Both Pudong and Bund perspectives
If your budget is limited, you do not necessarily need both.
🌧️ What If It Rains or Visibility Is Poor?
Light rain does not automatically ruin the cruise.
Most sightseeing boats have indoor areas, but the experience changes if you cannot enjoy the outdoor deck.
Poor conditions may include:
🌧️ Heavy rain
🌫️ Fog
💨 Strong wind
☁️ Low visibility
Before leaving for the pier:
📱 Check messages from your booking platform
📩 Check operator notifications
🌦️ Check the weather
❌ Read cancellation conditions
⚠️ Important
Do not assume bad weather automatically gives you a free cancellation.
Your refund rights depend on the terms of your specific ticket.
If flexibility matters, a slightly more expensive refundable ticket may be better value than the cheapest non-refundable option.

✅ Final Verdict: Which Huangpu River Cruise Should Malaysian Travellers Book?
For most first-time Malaysian visitors to Shanghai, start with a standard night sightseeing cruise. 🌃🚢
It gives you the classic Shanghai combination:
🏛️ Historic Bund architecture
+
🏙️ Illuminated Lujiazui skyline
+
🌊 Huangpu River views
But do not simply book the cheapest ticket you see.
Before paying, check:
✅ Sailing period
✅ Exact wharf
✅ Route
✅ Duration
✅ Outdoor-deck access
✅ Passport requirements
✅ Cancellation policy
✅ Final MYR total
Families and older travellers may prefer daytime. ☀️
Photographers should consider sunset when the actual departure matches sunset. 🌅
Muslim travellers should choose sightseeing-only unless the dining option has properly verified halal credentials. ☪️
What to Prepare for a Trip to China?
- Visa & Entry Tips Malaysians transiting through China to a third country can usually apply for a 24-hour or 240-hour visa-free transit; in addition, a 30-day visa-free period has been implemented between China and Malaysia. Learn more about China Arrival Card to land in China easily.
- Getting Connected VPNs are vital for accessing Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, etc in China. Set one up before arriving. China eSIMs are the easiest option for data and bypassing restrictions.
- Money Exchange & Tax Refunds Exchange money in China banks (better rates than airports). ATMs accept foreign cards, but notify your bank first. For tax refunds, spend over ¥500 at stores with a "Tax-Free" sign. Keep receipts and get forms stamped at customs before departure.
Must-Have Apps in China
- China Payment Apps Forget cash. Chinese use Alipay (I like it better) or WeChat Pay to pay for everything in China. Scan a QR code at noodle stalls, metros, even temples. Link your foreign Visa/Mastercard before landing.
- China Map Apps Amap (Gaode Map) & Baidu Map (limited English) is what locals use, with real-time navigation, metro/bus routes, and traffic updates. Apple Maps does a good job too if you're already an IOS user.
- China Transport Apps Street taxis are cheap, but drivers rarely speak English. Use China Taxi App like DiDi (China’s Uber)—set your destination in English, pay by Alipay.
- China Travel Apps 15+ China trips taught me: Use Trip.com. It's the best English app for booking China trains/flights/hotels + finds Trip.com deals.
- China Dating Apps Locals use Tantan (China’s Tinder) and Momo. WeChat’s “People Nearby” works too, but expect language barriers unless your Mandarin’s decent.
- China Food App Use Meituan (also helps find nearby restaurants) or Ele.me for food delivery—both have English mode. No English menu in restaurants? Scan the QR with Alipay's translator.

The ferry is primarily transport between Puxi and Pudong.
The sightseeing cruise is designed to give you more time on the river and better skyline-viewing opportunities. -
Are premium or VIP tickets worth it?
Only when they provide a benefit you actually care about.
Look for verified:
🌬️ Outdoor-deck access
💺 Better seating

🥤 Extras
Do not pay extra for the word “VIP” alone. -
