The location is excellent, right on Nanjing Road. There's a revolving restaurant upstairs and a shopping mall on the lower floors, making dining very convenient. Oliver, who assisted us, was incredibly nice and attentive, providing a five-star service throughout our stay. Most of the guests were international tour groups. The only downside is that the rooms are a bit old, and some have average views. It would be better to choose a room type carefully when checking in at Radisson Blu Hotel Shanghai New World.

We had a fantastic stay and were made to feel welcome from the moment we arrived. The staff were exceptionally warm and attentive, always even greeting us at the door, opening doors and checking cars for belongings left behind after long shopping trips. The hotel has a beautiful, luxurious atmosphere, with excellent facilities including a very well-equipped gym and separate men’s and women’s sauna and steam rooms as well as a pool and hot tub. There is also an onsite spa opened till 2am! The ‘This Works’ bathroom toiletries in the rooms were a lovely touch and smelled wonderful. Breakfast was outstanding, with an impressive selection and freshly prepared omelettes, steamed buns and pancakes. The English-speaking staff were also incredibly helpful throughout our stay and provided great recommendations of places to see and where to eat close by. The location is excellent, within easy walking distance of Nanjing Road and the Bund. Overall, a beautifully presented hotel with genuinely excellent service — we would happily stay here again and am glad we chose to stay here as there are an overwhelming amount of choices available but we feel we made a great choice!

This hotel exudes an old-money charm. I booked a night at the Garden Hotel for a staycation, just to switch things up. It's a classic for a reason – the location is unbeatable; it's a leisurely 15-minute stroll back from the Shanghai Culture Square. Not to mention the stunning large lawn and the gorgeous Art Deco interiors. The service was excellent across the board, the pool was great for a swim, and breakfast offered the usual five-star Chinese and Western options, plus the Garden Hotel's special Japanese breakfast 😎. All in all, a very satisfying stay.

My friend was only staying in Shanghai for a day, so naturally, I wanted to give her an itinerary that offered both 'old-world charm and new-age chic.' While passing Nanjing West Road recently, this InterContinental 'Luxury Collection' hotel immediately caught my eye. And just as I expected, critical as she is, she complimented my taste the moment she walked in. Its most appealing features are its convenient location and its ability to be a tranquil oasis amidst the bustle: step outside, and you're on the vibrant Nanjing Road; turn around, and you're in the quiet serenity of a residential area. My friend said the elevator decor instantly made her feel like she'd 'traveled through time,' and that unique 'Haitian style' evoked long-lost memories of Shanghai. She had originally come to sightsee but happily spent most of her day lingering at the hotel. What she loved most were the terrace and the restaurant. On a summer evening, the breeze felt just like those childhood nights spent cooling off in the alleyways – she used to live in a Shikumen house. She remarked, 'If only I could lie in a wicker chair, fan myself with a palm-leaf fan, eat watermelon, and watch an outdoor movie, that would be truly divine.' She also adored the red hanging ornament in the lobby; it was vibrantly bright, yet its glass texture gave it a lively feel, much like Shanghai's character – passionate yet steady, with a touch of lightness within its composure. The food did not disappoint either. I pushed her to try the Shiqipu Noodle Restaurant, where the owner asked in Shanghainese, 'Mi dao ai hao fa?' (Is the taste good?), and she smiled and replied, 'Authentic,' instantly tearing up. She specifically bought the sweet variety of butterfly pastries from the International Hotel – saying 'only sweet is truly Shanghai.' Her only regret was: having stayed in too many foreign-style grand hotels, this time, with Shanghai elements everywhere and Shanghai flavors in every bite, it was 'just missing the sound of Shanghai.' Perhaps the cicada chirps in the alleyways and the hawkers' cries from the Shikumen are the hometown sounds she truly yearns to hear. However, she has already declared: the next time she returns, this will be her chosen hotel, and she plans to visit all the routes I arranged. I believe the charm of Shanghai has never been in its superficial glamour but in its ability to always find the most fitting way to blend East and West, ancient and modern, living as a unique 'Haipai' (Shanghai style). This is also the root that every Shanghainese person cherishes. Below are the three half-day itinerary options I created for her, which I've also compiled here, hoping they might help someone else: Option 1 · A Stroll Through Old Shanghai Charm Start from the hotel's main entrance on Fengyang Road and turn into Huanghe Road. The Changjiang Building and Changjiang Theater were the last residences of Eileen Chang; Huanghe Road is the origin of 'Blossoms Shanghai' (Fan Hua). The International Hotel is where her mother and aunt once stayed; next to it, the Sports Museum is rumored to be where Eileen Chang used to study. Diagonally opposite is the History Museum (formerly the Racecourse); the East Wing houses the old bronze lions from the HSBC Building on the Bund, and the 'Echoes of Shanghai' exhibition in the West Wing happens to talk about the past of Fengyang Road. The ornate windows of the West Wing and the Changjiang Building, mirroring the hotel's architecture, perfectly showcase the most fashionable Art Deco style of the 1930s. Option 2 · Tracing Red Memories Walk along Chengdu North Road to the Secretariat of the China Labor Movement, to see how Shanghai workers united into a revolutionary force; then visit the former site of the Songpu Special Committee. Go to the Sihang Warehouse to hear the echoes of the Battle of Shanghai and see the bullet-riddled walls recount the tragedy of that year. At night, turn into Xiang Kang Li on Xinchang Road to find the former site of the CCP Central Committee's secret printing press; on Nanjing West Road, there is also the former site of the Soviet Liaison Office, where, amidst the flickering lights, memories of the past reside. Option 3 · Modern and Retro Collision The LV 'Big Boat' on Nanjing West Road is currently a popular spot for photos; after visiting, turn into Wujiang Road for shopping and dining, and further ahead is Zhangyuan Shikumen – where new trends emerge in old alleyways, perfect for capturing stunning photos. Food Tips · The hotel restaurant's afternoon tea set is exquisite and picture-perfect. · Shiqipu Noodle Restaurant (the owner's Shanghainese is a living signboard). · Deda Western Restaurant and Gongdelin Noodle Restaurant, each with its own charm. · Donghai Small Restaurant (authentic Ningbo cuisine). · Chongming cuisine on the second floor of the hotel, authentic local flavors. · International Hotel butterfly pastries, remember to choose the sweet ones. Though the day was short, the essence of Shanghai will give her much to savor. When she returns next time, we'll continue our journey.

The hotel was very nice. The breakfast buffet had a mix of western food and Chinese food. The only improvement I would suggest is a more powerful toaster, but that obviously isn’t a deal breaker. We stayed in a lovely room with a balcony. The housekeeping was wonderful and came every day during our stay. The view of the Bund from the elevator waiting area/lobby was really nice, especially in the evening. Highly recommend staying at Blossom House!

I had a very satisfying stay. The lobby atmosphere and environment were excellent, and the location was superb. It's only a 15-minute walk to The Bund and Nanjing Road, making it convenient for taxis and public transport. The room was simple, clean, and well-equipped with all facilities in good working order. You could see the 'three-piece set' (referring to the three iconic skyscrapers of Shanghai) and the Oriental Pearl TV Tower from the window. The front desk service was attentive, and check-in was quick and easy, not taking much time at all. The room was very well-maintained and even had a mini-bar and complimentary snacks. Overall, I had a great experience and highly recommend it to anyone visiting Shanghai.

Facilities: This is an old-school five-star hotel. While the style has a bit of history to it, everything is impeccably clean. It truly showcases the quality of a five-star hotel and makes you feel at ease. Hygiene: Nothing to complain about, absolutely excellent! Spotless. Environment: Many foreigners stay here, making it feel like you're abroad. Of course, Shanghai is indeed an international metropolis, and you see a lot of foreigners on the streets. Service: I have to complain about the hotel's breakfast, specifically the noodle and wonton station right at the entrance. You're a five-star hotel, after all. Yet, the wontons and noodles are pre-cooked. If you want some, they just roll them around in the broth, which is incredibly perfunctory. They taste mushy. It really cheapens the experience. They even give you a tag and tell you to pick it up after three minutes. Does it really take three minutes to swish something in a pot? It's out in 20 seconds, tops. However, the egg pancakes are made fresh! An egg pancake requires tomatoes, onions, minced meat, mixing, spreading, rolling, and plating – wow, that sounds like a lot of work, right? But they make each one fresh, and you have to wait for it. If no one orders, they just leave the pan empty! You guys are truly dedicated! Perhaps wontons and Chinese noodles just don't 'agree' with hotel settings, and they have to be pre-cooked. That's a tough pill to swallow.

The hotel's location is excellent, right next to Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street. It's only a 15-20 minute walk to the Bund. This time I stayed in an executive room which included breakfast and access to the executive lounge. The breakfast spread was very generous with a wide variety of choices, and the food tasted good too. The only downside was that the room showed clear signs of wear and tear, with dark stains around the bathtub. Also, getting a taxi was a bit inconvenient as drivers often didn't know how to get to the lobby on the second floor.

This is my second time staying at this hotel. I booked an executive twin room with my child. The room was clean, and its location right in the heart of Jing'an Temple makes dining and taking the subway incredibly convenient. I first booked it because of its proximity to Eileen Chang's former residence, Changde Apartment, and I booked it again because of its excellent location and service. My child particularly loves the hot spring pool here. We also ate several meals at CP Jing'an this time, which was very convenient. However, you need to watch the time when taking a taxi. I noticed during this trip to Shanghai that Jing'an Temple is really congested. Getting to the hotel was a constant jam, and the ride to the airport was also quite slow. The hotel breakfast is excellent! There's a wide variety, and I always eat too much. Check-out time is also very flexible; my flight was at 4 PM, and the front desk staff kindly extended our check-out to 1:30 PM, which was fantastic service. I'll definitely consider staying here again on my next trip to Shanghai.

Decent stay, but several misses for a 5-star property My stay at the Pullman Shanghai Central was a mixed bag—nice in some areas, but disappointing in others. Check-in: The staff were very friendly and welcoming on our first day. However, I was surprised that they wouldn't let me check in until 3:00 PM. At most other hotels, I'm usually able to get an early check-in (even if I arrive at noon), so this felt a bit rigid for a property of this level. The Room: The room itself was comfortable—the bed was soft and the shower pressure was actually perfect (not too strong, not too weak, just right). Unfortunately, the room smelled strongly of cigarette smoke upon arrival. To their credit, when I called the front desk, they immediately offered to change my room, which was very professional of them. Breakfast: This was the biggest letdown. The breakfast buffet felt more like what you'd expect from a 3-star hotel rather than a 5-star Pullman. The quality and selection just weren't there for me. Overall: It was an okay stay—nothing terrible, but nothing exceptional either. I wouldn't rate it a 10/10, more like a solid 6. Good service from the staff, but the check-in policy, smoke issue, and food really held it back.

The room was spacious enough, and the location was absolutely superb, offering an unobstructed view of the Bund right across the street. It's right next to Binjiang Park, so you just cross the road and you're by the river. Super Brand Mall is right next door, and the Pudong Art Museum is also very close. There are plenty of dining options nearby as well. Whether you're in a car or walking, the 'Three Piece Set' (Shanghai Tower, Jin Mao Tower, and Shanghai World Financial Center) is constantly in view. The breakfast was incredibly rich and diverse. The only reason I didn't give a perfect score is because there was no bidet.

A special thanks to Rosy for her full-service assistance and to Scarlett for the carefully prepared gift and handwritten card. Also, the handsome guys and beautiful ladies at Flair were all very nice. I apologize for not remembering the name of the lovely lady who checked us in, but her recommendations for hotel benefits really saved us some money. The river view room was decent, and watching the lights of Pudong Development Bank from it was worth the price. A perfect National Day holiday experience, highly recommend Anandi Hotel Shanghai! I came for a relaxing and healing break during the National Day holiday, and the entire stay exceeded my expectations. I believe it's on par with the best ryokans in Japan. Among them, Mr. Gao's service was exceptional; he was incredibly attentive to every detail and escorted us with care throughout our stay. I stayed one night at Yuansu Hot Spring Hotel in Shanghai, and the overall experience was better than expected. The room was very clean and well-equipped, making for a comfortable stay. My favorite part was the private hot spring tub in the room. After returning in the evening, I could soak anytime without needing a reservation, which offered excellent privacy. The hotel also offers therapeutic activities like meditation. Unfortunately, I only stayed one night and didn't have much time to try them, but they seemed quite unique. Parking at the hotel is very convenient, with plenty of spaces available. If you're driving, you basically don't have to worry about parking. The hotel staff provided excellent and patient service. The hotel room facilities are good, with everything that should be there. The smoking area outside is also very beautiful. The breakfast in the morning is very good, it is self-service, and there are freshly made noodles to eat. If you are thirsty, you can go downstairs at any time to have some drinks and fruits, which are all included in the hotel package. Why the deduction? Like many reviews wrote, the water in the pool here is really too hot. It is the hottest of all the hot springs in Shanghai that I have been to. It feels too hot. I saw that several children could hardly soak in the water for a while. I don’t know why so many people complained. I saw that the management was still saying in the comments that it met the hot spring temperature requirements. What they said is that your water is too hot, and they are giving you suggestions. Everyone in the hot spring said that the water was hot, not that you violated any regulations... It takes talent to reply like this

I visited Qianyun after looking at dozens of places in the area. I wanted to be away from typical city area, have a bathtub and nice outdoor area, and with easy access to Shanghai Disneyland. Qianyun met all those requirements and more! The location was immediately very serene and surrounded by forest, but still easy to access lots of waimai food delivery options. They were also very kind and proactive about sharing information about local restaurants and activities, and provide a breakfast and evening fruit every day. They offer free car transport to Disneyland, and I was excited to use this service but I ended up enjoying my time at the hotel so much that I opted to stay and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere instead! The hotel pets are so friendly - within five minutes the little cat Banban was on my lap and purring. The room itself is decorated very nicely with all the amenities you need. The bathtub inside is very comfortable and I loved the outdoor hot spring tub as well. The attention to hygiene is very highly emphasized and I was impressed with how clean and luxurious everything felt. I will definitely visit again and recommend to anyone hoping to have a convenient getaway from the city, or who would like to be near to Disneyland Resort while also experiencing a more peaceful area and for a good economical value and high quality service! Thankyou for the wonderful stay, I felt very welcome at all times.

Our stay here truly exceeded all expectations, and I must give a huge shout-out to Sharon from the hotel! During our stay, not only was her service thoughtful and attentive, but it also happened to be the Mid-Autumn Festival. She warmly presented me with a box of exquisite and delicious mooncakes and even prepared special toiletries and slippers for the kids. Every detail showed immense sincerity. She was consistently enthusiastic and patient with guests, responding to requests efficiently and meticulously, making communication a real pleasure. The hotel's overall environment, cleanliness, and service standards were all top-notch. You can directly overlook Xintiandi, and the hotel's promotional video even features Ayanga. With such a professional and warm staff member like Sharon, the entire check-in process was incredibly comfortable. Next time I'm in the area, this will definitely be my first choice, and I'll strongly recommend it to all my friends.

I rarely review hotels, but the service at The Portman Ritz-Carlton is truly exceptional – friendly and just right. The hotel facilities are also incredibly well-maintained; the elevators and the bar on the first floor have an aesthetic that harks back to an economically prosperous era. We booked an executive room, and the ladies at the executive lounge were professional and welcoming. They even knew it was our birthday and gave us a new Ritz lion charm when we checked out – so thoughtful! The lounge's food selection isn't vast, but the ingredients are top-notch, and every dish is meticulously prepared. The hot pastries are particularly excellent – crispy and not greasy. I'll definitely be back.

I recently had to stay at Citadines for an extended period due to some personal matters. I was initially worried about potential inconveniences, but it turns out all my concerns were unnecessary. The front desk and concierge service are absolutely top-notch, five stars! I receive many deliveries daily, and the concierge always diligently brings them right to my room door, saving me the hassle of going downstairs to pick them up. I don't have to worry about packages at all. For long-term residents, this attention to detail is incredibly thoughtful and saves a lot of time and effort. The room cleanliness is also excellent. The housekeeping staff does a fantastic job; the room is always spotless and comfortable, which makes for a pleasant stay. The overall service attitude is great, and any requests are handled promptly. As a brand under Ascott, Citadines truly delivers on service quality, making for a worry-free and comfortable stay. I highly recommend it to anyone needing long-term accommodation! 👍

I specifically came here because of the TV show 'Blossoms' and I'm very satisfied. A big thank you to the lovely lady at the front desk who upgraded my room! All the staff I encountered were polite and enthusiastic, I give their service a perfect score 💯. The decor really suits my aesthetic, it's worth savoring every detail. The Peace Hotel truly lives up to its reputation as the face of Shanghai; as a Shanghainese myself, I'm so proud of it! I particularly recommend their guided tours, held daily at 10 AM and 2 PM. The half-hour explanation gives you insight into its century-long history, and there are many beautiful crafts to admire too. The breakfast selection is also very rich, and we were pleasantly surprised to find our favorites like wontons, potstickers, and soup dumplings. Just a small suggestion: it would be even better if low pillows were available. Overall, the experience was fantastic, and I'll definitely recommend it to friends. We'd love to have the chance to stay here again! 😃

The front desk staff were warm and welcoming, smiling as we arrived. Grand Hyatt Shanghai truly lives up to its flagship reputation, showcasing extremely high professional standards. The breakfast spread was extensive, a great blend of Eastern and Western cuisine. Although it's in Pudong Lujiazui, getting around by public transport, subway, and shopping are all quite convenient. We stayed on a high floor, offering a wide view of the city, including the beautiful Oriental Pearl Tower and the Huangpu River. Personally, I wholeheartedly recommend Grand Hyatt Shanghai, with its rich history and soaring height, as the top choice for anyone visiting Shanghai.

This stay was fantastic! The room was clean and tidy, and the front desk service was warm and attentive. A special thanks to the hotel for kindly arranging a late check-out for me, which made my trip much more relaxed without having to rush. The breakfast was very unique; the chef was full of energy and enthusiasm in the morning. They offered both special Shanghai delicacies and Thai-flavored breakfast, which was great! 👍 Overall, it offered excellent value for money, and I had a comfortable stay. I would definitely choose this hotel again next time.

Outstanding four-night stay – impeccable service and perfect Jing’an location I recently stayed four nights at the Jing An Shangri-La, and it was an exceptional experience from start to finish. The staff were consistently warm, professional, and attentive—nothing was too much trouble. The gym is very well equipped, and the swimming pool is lovely and relaxing, perfect after a busy day in Shanghai. The location in Jing’an is ideal, within easy walking distance to several major malls, restaurants, and transport links. What really stood out was the service after I checked out: I accidentally left an item behind, and the team quickly arranged to send it back to Hong Kong for me. I highly recommend this hotel and will definitely return

The service was good, and the environment was pleasant. My room had a river view. However, there were people smoking in the rooms or hallways, and when I opened my door, I could smell smoke. I suggest better separation between smoking and non-smoking areas. Also, breakfast wasn't great; there were very few choices, and some of the fried items were overcooked. I waited a long time for a wrap, only for it to be quite unappetizing. I noticed a staff member serving youtiao (fried dough sticks) – one hand had a glove, the other didn't, and they used their bare hand to break the youtiao to put into a wrap. At the noodle station, the noodles were placed so far back and so high up that it was really inconvenient for guests to get them. The staff standing nearby didn't offer any help. I recommend placing food items in more accessible locations. Overall, the dining options and management definitely need improvement.

The hotel boasts an excellent location, and its blend of a magnificent historic building with East-meets-West interior design imbues every detail with profound depth and elegant charm. The guest rooms are spacious and comfortable, offering superb views of both sides of the Huangpu River. All the staff I encountered were well-trained, friendly, and provided efficient and attentive service. The breakfast buffet, featuring both Western and Chinese options, was abundant and authentic in taste. The Long Bar on the ground floor of the old building is highly recommended; it has been meticulously restored to its original appearance from a century ago, exuding a vintage yet exquisite ambiance. On Friday nights, live jazz musicians enhance the already fantastic atmosphere.

Getting in and out of the car at the hotel entrance was inconvenient, with no shelter from the rain, which was a hassle on rainy days. The road was also narrow and prone to traffic jams. The smart home system needs improvement; it wasn't very responsive. Several TVs had no signal, and casting to the device ultimately failed, which felt quite inconvenient. Overall, it was decent. Location: Conveniently situated, directly accessible from Hongqiao Railway Station underground, after passing through the complex, so there's no need to go above ground to find it. Dining and other amenities are also easily accessible. Hygiene: Satisfied, quite clean. Facilities: Well-equipped, though the air conditioning was a bit difficult to adjust. Service: A big commendation to the front desk duty manager who answered the phone and handled my issue on the evening of March 13th. There was a slight problem with my room type upon check-in, and the duty manager resolved it promptly and with a sincere attitude. Very satisfied!

A true hidden gem in this modern high-rise. The hotel is in the same building as the Novotel – specifically, Citadines occupies floors 15 to 18. The check-in experience is an absolute 10/10: the team is incredibly welcoming, offering coffee, tea, and small pastries, plus there's a very pleasant coworking space. The rooms feel like compact studios with a kitchenette: microwave, washing machine, dryer, a full-sized fridge, and lots of storage. The bed and pillows are supremely cozy, and the shower… just wow! The water pressure is outstanding – truly a delight. The door goes from floor to ceiling, so steam from long, hot showers stays inside the bathroom. The sink area is a little tight, but perfectly fine for one or two people. Special shout-out: the magnifying mirror and the Japanese toilet – a real touch of luxury that I thoroughly enjoyed. This time was just a long weekend, and we had a fantastic, relaxing stay. The only small drawback: the metro is about 1 km away, maybe slightly farther. But the value for money is so excellent that what you save on the hotel more than covers a taxi ride. In fact, I had a 6:00 am train from Hongqiao and pre-ordered a Didi – it took just 15 minutes door to door, which was incredibly convenient for me. Considering how reasonable the price at Citadines already is, the Didi cost felt like nothing. That sealed the deal for me. This is my third time staying here, and it remains my go-to place in Shanghai. Highly recommended – I'll be back again soon.

How to Get to the Best Shanghai Spas: Transportation Guide

Vue

Shanghai has an extensive public transport network, making it relatively easy for Malaysian travellers to reach spas across the city. The best transport option depends on your arrival airport, the spa's location and whether you are travelling during the day or late night.

How to Buy Metro Tickets

Malaysian travellers can choose from several ticketing and payment methods:

  • Contactless bank cards: Eligible Visa, Mastercard, American Express, JCB and UnionPay cards can be tapped at supported metro gates. Check that contactless payments are enabled on your card.
  • Mobile payment apps: Use the Shanghai Metro service through Alipay or WeChat, or the Metro Daduhui app, to access QR-code ticketing.
  • Single-journey tickets: Buy tickets from vending machines at metro stations. Station service centres can also assist with ticket purchases using eligible international bank cards.
  • Travel passes: Consider a one-day or three-day pass if you expect to make several metro journeys during your stay.

These options allow visitors to travel without needing to purchase a separate paper ticket for every journey.

Best Metro Routes for Popular Shanghai Spas

Use these nearby stations as a starting point when planning your journey. The most convenient exit and final walking route may vary by entrance, so check the spa's exact address before travelling.

Spa

Suggested metro route

Young·SPACE

Take Line 2, 4, 6 or 9 to Century Avenue Station, then walk approximately 5–7 minutes to the spa.

Shuiguo Hot Spring — Hongqiao branch

Travel to Hongqiao Railway Station on Line 2, 10 or 17, then walk to the Hongqiao Tianjie area.

Shuiguo Hot Spring — Wujiaochang branch

Take Line 10 to Wujiaochang Station and continue towards Songhu Road.

Qushui Lanting

Take Line 10 to Longxi Road or Shuicheng Road Station, then walk or take a short taxi ride to the spa.

Dwenton Spa & Moxibustion

Take Line 10 to Shuicheng Road Station and follow the walking directions to the treatment centre.

MUSIJI Head Spa

Travel towards the Fuzhou Road area. Check the exact building entrance and closest station using a current map before setting off.

Sun Island Forest Spa

Take Line 17 towards Zhujiajiao, then arrange a local bus or DiDi for the final part of the journey.

Metro travel tip: A spa may operate 24 hours, but the metro does not necessarily run throughout the night. Check the last train before booking a late-night treatment or planning to stay overnight. For spas outside central Shanghai, compare the total journey time and final transport connection rather than relying on the metro alone.

Using Didi or Taxis to Reach Shanghai Spas

DiDi, China's popular ride-hailing service, is a convenient option for Malaysian travellers who prefer door-to-door transport. It is particularly useful when visiting large spa complexes, carrying suitcases, travelling with family or returning to a hotel after a late-night session. The app supports an English-language interface, and its messaging feature can automatically translate messages between passengers and drivers. Travellers can book through the DiDi app or access the service through WeChat, with payment handled through the supported payment method linked to the booking. Traditional taxis are another option, particularly at airport taxi stands. Standard Shanghai taxi fares start at CNY 14 for the first 3 km, followed by CNY 2.70 per additional kilometre. Longer journeys and late-night trips may incur surcharges.

Tips for Using DiDi and Taxis

  • Set up payment before travelling: Register for Alipay or WeChat Pay and link an eligible international bank card. Check that your chosen payment method is working before requesting a ride.
  • Save the spa's Chinese address: Copy the full address into DiDi or show it to the taxi driver. This helps avoid confusion between branches with similar names.
  • Check the vehicle details: Before entering a DiDi, confirm that the licence plate matches the information shown in the app. Use the app's communication features if you need to clarify the pickup point.
  • Use official airport taxi stands: Follow airport signs to designated pickup areas instead of accepting unsolicited offers from drivers inside the terminal.
  • Allow extra travel time: Traffic can affect journeys between the airport, city centre and suburban resorts, particularly during busy periods.

Essential Tips Before Visiting a Shanghai Spa

Sun Island Forest Spa

Visiting a spa in Shanghai can be different from visiting a conventional spa in Malaysia, particularly at large bathhouse complexes where guests can enjoy hot baths, saunas, dining areas and relaxation lounges for several hours. Before visiting, Malaysian travellers should understand the spa's dress code, payment arrangements and facility rules to avoid unexpected charges or discomfort. Preparing the necessary items and checking the booking conditions in advance will help make the experience more enjoyable.

What to Bring (and What Not to Bring) to a Shanghai Spa

泳池

Most large Shanghai spa complexes provide basic amenities, but the facilities and rules differ between venues. Some supply towels, toiletries, slippers and lounge clothing, while others may charge extra for selected items. Use this checklist to prepare for your visit.

Item

What Malaysian travellers should know

Passport or identification

Keep your passport or another accepted form of identification available in case the venue requires it for registration.

Booking confirmation

Save your ticket, QR code and reservation details on your phone for easy access at reception.

Payment cards and cash

Bring a contactless or chip-enabled international bank card and some Chinese yuan (CNY) as a backup.

Swimwear

Bring swimwear if required by the venue. Some traditional bathing areas prohibit swimsuits, so check the dress code beforehand.

Personal toiletries

Pack skincare products, hair products or other personal items if you prefer using your own rather than the spa's supplies.

Hair ties and a change of underwear

Useful after bathing, massage or hair treatments.

Phone and power bank

Keep your booking information and payment apps accessible. Observe restrictions on phones and photography in private or bathing areas.

Medication and personal essentials

Bring necessary personal medication and inform staff about relevant allergies or sensitivities before treatment.

What not to bring: Avoid bringing valuable jewellery, large amounts of cash or unnecessary luggage into bathing areas. Check the venue's policy before bringing outside food, drinks or personal towels, as restrictions may apply.

Dress code and etiquette: At traditional bathhouses, bathing areas may be separated by gender and require guests to shower before entering communal pools. Some facilities require nude bathing in these areas, while others have different rules. Wear appropriate clothing in shared lounges and dining areas, keep your voice low in relaxation zones, and never photograph other guests without permission. Follow the specific rules displayed at the spa rather than assuming every venue operates in the same way.

Payment Methods at Shanghai Spas: A Guide for International Visitors

**Shanghai Spa Pay**

China relies heavily on mobile payments, but Malaysian travellers can still use several payment methods even if they have not set up Alipay or WeChat Pay. The most practical approach is to prepare a mobile payment option before departure, carry a bank card and keep some cash for backup. Acceptance varies between spa venues, so confirm the payment methods available for admission, deposits and additional treatments.

Payment method

How it works

Advice for Malaysian travellers

Alipay

Visitors can register with an overseas mobile number and link an eligible international bank card. Payments are made by scanning a merchant's QR code or displaying a payment code.

Set up the account before travelling and test it where possible.

WeChat Pay

Eligible international bank cards can be linked to WeChat Pay for supported transactions.

Activate the wallet and complete any required identity verification before your trip.

Touch 'n Go eWallet

Can be used through Alipay+ at participating merchants in mainland China.

Check for the Alipay+ payment logo and confirm acceptance with the spa. Do not assume every spa accepts it.

International bank cards

Some spas accept Visa, Mastercard or other supported cards at their payment terminals.

Ask whether your card is accepted, especially for the final bill or deposit.

Cash in Chinese yuan

Cash can be used at merchants that accept it, and yuan can be obtained through eligible ATMs or currency-exchange services.

Carry a modest amount of cash in case mobile payments fail or a venue cannot process your card.

Understanding the Electronic Wristband System

**Bathhouse Check-In**

Many large Shanghai bathhouse complexes issue an electronic wristband when you enter. Depending on the venue, the wristband may serve as your locker key and allow you to charge purchases such as meals, drinks, massages and other activities to your account. You typically settle the outstanding balance when leaving. Before entering, confirm whether the admission fee is prepaid, whether a deposit is required and which services are included. At checkout, review the itemised bill before paying, particularly if you have used treatments or entertainment facilities that cost extra.

Important payment tip: Do not rely on a single payment method. For a smoother trip, prepare Alipay or WeChat Pay in advance, check whether Touch 'n Go eWallet is accepted at your chosen spa, and carry a bank card plus some Chinese yuan as backup. This is especially useful for late-night visits when finding alternative payment options may be more difficult.
