"If this was our first visit to Rawdon’s we wouldn’t be back. Whoever your chef was on Sunday lunch on the 15th March 2026 he needs to go. We specifically chose to travel from Joburg to Durban on a Sunday so we could incorporate a Rawdon’s Sunday lunch as part of our trip. The beef was way too rare. The Yorkshire pudding the stodgiest I have ever attempted to eat in my life. The vegetables were meager at best. My husband’s lamb was not great either. The table next to us was also underwhelmed by their meals. We have been coming to Rawdon’s for many many years and have always had a great experience. Today was an ultimate fail."

"We were celebrating a birthday and asked for the best rooms with a view, after being assured we would receive this. I confirmed our booking only to arrive and be given old rooms that were not upgraded. This put a damper on our entire celebration. I felt completely misled and deceived by the quality of room we received. Had I known I would’ve booked elsewhere. The first night of dinner booked, the food was inconsistent and possibly the worst pasta I have ever had. While the staff apologised, it didn’t make anyone feel more comfortable to order more food."

No other accommodation establishment in the world (and believe me, I've visited more than a thousand) can hold a candle to their sumptuous ROCKWOOD FARMHOUSE. "Travelling from the UK to Hilton to assist parents with a move, thought as a final night meal we would head to Hilton Hotel for a meal. Memories and comments on how good the food was and pre reading the menu, gave me the feeling of a good meal. This was not the case unfortunately. Food was ordered. As we had previewed the menu, expectation was high. I ordered the steak and ribs, medium rare. Received a medium rare steak but was as tough as the proverbial old boot. Had 2 minuscule ribs and 1 medium sized piece, both were luke warm at best. Ribs must have been from a miniature pig. My parents had fish and chips as well as the curry, both not worth the price we paid. I have eaten at a number of places in PMB/Hilton and all I can say is for the cost we paid, there are many other places where you could get better value food for what you paid here."

"We recently stayed at Gateside Guesthouse and wanted to share my experience. Pros: Beautiful Views: The scenery surrounding the guest house is absolutely stunning. Waking up to such breathtaking views was a highlight of our stay. Delicious Breakfast: The breakfast offered was delightful, with a variety of options that were both tasty and satisfying. It truly set a positive tone for the day. Cons: Unfriendly Welcome: Unfortunately, our welcome was not as warm as we had hoped from the manager. The initial interaction felt a bit cold and rushed, which set an awkward tone for the start of our stay. Communication Style: Throughout our visit, reminders about the house rules were delivered in a rather unfriendly manner. This could be improved by adopting a more welcoming tone for guests. Feeling Unwelcome: At times, we felt unwelcome due to the overall atmosphere and communication style. A more friendly approach from the manager would greatly enhance the guest experience. Conclusion: While there were aspects of our stay that we truly enjoyed, such as the beautiful views and delicious breakfast, the unfriendly welcome and communication style left much to be desired. With some improvements in guest relations, Gateside Guesthouse has the potential to provide a much more inviting experience."

"VERY over priced. Coffee - only 2 sachets provided. No option of tea. So either have one before bed or the morning!!! The only form of toileties, was a little round soap in a wrapper and an empty plastic bottle with a label stating "shampoo". Not even hand soap at the basin or a hand towel. Single ply toilet paper looked like rats had been at it. Mats in the bathroom had holes, as did the spare double/queen sized blanket for the single bed. No hairdryer. Electric blanket did not work and temp was around 3°. Thank goodness I had taken my hotwater bottle. Had 3 mis-matched cups, glasses, plates etc. Floor rug could do with a wash. Curtains are really thin and don't block out the lights from outside. Only 1 2-pin plug point in the room. There were various notices stuck with prestick on the walls indicating Rules, Tv guide, don't feed dogs, no smoking etc. Why not put all in a little flip file all in one place?? The single bed was comfortable and there was hot water for a shower. Location is good but needs loads of TLC. Don't think I will be going back any time soon."

"The food and dessert is overrated. The service needs a lot of work. The hotel/lodge is run down and not well maintained. Not eco friendly at all. The fireplace debris is stockpiled (now a huge heap) at the back of the hotel, separating the hotel and staff quarters. It’s a health hazard to the environment, staff, children at play, wild animals and the stray cats (not sterilised) around the premises."

"We stayed at Fordoun because of its proximity to Ardmore Cermanics. It was a pleasure to have it has our homebase for two separate weekends. A former country estate turned into a gracious Hotel & Spa. The property is rich in history as I learned from reading the "bedtime stories" placed on my nightstand. The reception staff are very welcoming, warm and helpful. As could be said for all of the employees that we interacted with at Fordoun during our 4-night stay. A favorite of mine were the heavy blankets to keep out the autumn chill. A quiet and relaxing getaway!"

"We once again spent the Easter weekend at Otters Den, and it was just as wonderful as we remembered. The self-catering cottage is well-equipped, making for a comfortable and easy stay. The surroundings are incredibly peaceful and relaxing, with beautiful views of the clean, flowing Lions River. The location is ideal—close to the Midlands Meander and perfect for sightseeing. Grenville and Christine were, as always, warm and hospitable hosts who made our visit truly enjoyable. It was also great to see the ongoing improvements, especially the addition of the new generator that now powers the entire complex—a fantastic upgrade. Thank you again for a lovely stay. "Excellent stopover just off the beaten track. Friendly hosts being Graham who owns it, and Ryan his son who runs the place. Great accomodation. It's a small establishment with only a few rooms. We were in room 2 with an in room bath and separate shower and toilet. Lovely comfortable bed and good quality linen and bath towels. Loved the honesty bar and common area downstairs, plus the friendly Jack Russel. Amos cooked a great breakfast and even although there was load shedding there was no disruption to service. Only negative being there weren't any good restaurants in the vicinity for dinner unless you drove all the way back to Nottingham Road."
