"We stayed in this cave hotel for one night. It feels like something special being in that kind of hotel. The room is very big and has a nice bathroom. The breakfast was also diverse and yummy. "There are lots of features that make this hotel a great choice in Matera. First, we really enjoyed our room which had a superb view and was suitably atmospheric. We appreciated the interesting configuration of the hotel, which is really an interconnected complex of ancient buildings. There are outdoor seating areas scattered throughout for different vantage points on the spectacular views of Matera. The front desk staff was very helpful and friendly and responded instantly to WhatsApp messages. We were without dinner reservations for one night, and the restaurant they recommended was a highlight of our trip."

"The actual hotel/room didn't quite live up to the photos or descriptions; it definitely wasn't the cave-style depicted but rather quite modern. Located on a hill, the hotel is impossible to find using GPS. We had to call the front desk, and it took a long time for them to understand and send someone to collect us. Be prepared for many stairs. If you plan to stay here, I'd strongly advise against bringing much luggage. The air conditioning unit in the room was incredibly loud; at night, it sounded eerily like ongoing construction work. The view from the window was also quite plain, which might have been due to the room's orientation."

"Located outside the historic area. Room was spacious with room to layout 2 suitcases. There is a safe. Nice sized desk that has a light. Bathroom has a lighted shaving mirror but the light didn’t work and the mirror was so loose it wouldn’t stay in the position I needed. The supplied blow dryer is feeble and you have to hold the on button all the time. Combo shower/tub was slippery and the shower head was difficult to use without spraying the toilet next to the tub and the floor. The nightstands on each side of the bed had a built in USB port but they only work when the bedside lights are on; no overnight charging while you sleep unless you loosen the bulb. The room had a refrigerator/mini bar. Breakfast was very good- a very large selection of meats cheeses breads cakes cereal etc. multiple coffee options. Overall a good option for this area"

"The B&B the carrub is in an extraordinary position from an environmental point of view from the Gravina and in front of the beauty. It is open to the east, so it is also well positioned to see the dawn. It is located on the street of San Potito under the Matera Duomo reachable in a few minutes. The manager is Mr. Gianni with a great hospitality, a pleasant breakfast for the menu and for the possibility of breakfast outside, as happened to us in a beautiful sunday. The price quality ratio is in line and therefore suitable for the characteristics of the B&B. Recommended."

"Dirty rooftop terrace (bird droppings) and non-functional jacuzzi (turned into a bird bath). Room key incident: The key broke in the lock without us forcing it. The hotelier called a locksmith for a cost of 25 euros. He asked us to pay this amount, which we refused as it was a problem with the key and not damage caused by us. Unauthorized charge to our credit card: The day after our departure, 152 euros were charged to our credit card without our consent (using the imprint taken during the reservation). The hotelier did not inform us of this charge. Lack of communication and professionalism: When we contacted him to express our dissatisfaction, he stated that he was entitled to charge this amount "in accordance with Italian law." He then stopped responding to our messages when we asked him for documentation for our insurance. Comment: This event ruined our stay in Matera. We absolutely do not recommend this hotel. The lack of cleanliness, technical problems, deplorable customer service and the questionable practices of the hotelier are unacceptable."

"This is a truly tranquil hotel. The beds are extremely comfortable and the surroundings very relaxing. Breakfast is leisurely, sumptuous and exquisitely executed. "The Vatera Matera hotel was opened just over a year ago and was eight years in the making. This cave hotel does indeed have windows in the rooms unlike others in the Sassi area. Vatera Matera gets high marks from us for professional staff, decor, services, and rooms. We were very pleased with all aspects. A special note of thanks to Francesco of the Spa area for the great sports massage that helped after many flights and stairs and steps on our exploration of the unique and special city of Matera."
