"We had seven nights B&B at this guest house. It is in a fabulous position on the cliff above Snanklin and we had reserved a sea view room. On arrival, we thought the room (16) was rather compact and the bathroom was poor for the price we were paying. However, my greatest concern was when I looked at the bed and saw the very obvious dips in the mattress. Midnight, that night, saw us trying to pad the mattress out by doubling the duvet under the bottom sheet but, even then, we could feel every button in the mattress. We knew we couldn’t spend another night in that bed. At breakfast, we asked the lovely Glennis if we could speak to the owner. After explaining our situation, she said she would sort something out. She came back to say that the owner would offer us another available room. Out of the two we were shown, neither mattress looked much better but Glennis said that they would turn the mattress, put a topper on and a duvet to pad it out. We decided to accept the offer of the suite (room 6) in the hope that it would be ok. Room 6 is a lovely room, with a separate lounge and a spacious bathroom - much more like we would have expected anyway for the price. Also, we didn’t know where else we would be able to find accommodation for a whole week with immediate effect. We just about managed but I used the complimentary hot water bottle each morning to ease the stiffness in my back. When we came to pay at the end of the week, we discovered that the owner had also reduced our bill. Accepting that this was a “pay off”, I decided that I wouldn’t write a review but instead would write a letter to the owner outlining how amazed we were at the dreadful standard of the mattresses and hoping that he could reassure me that he would be replacing them all. However, two weeks later, I have had no such reassurance so, hence this review. I feel I have a duty to warn other prospective guests that the “good beds” they are promised on the website do not exist. We travel widely and have never had a bad night’s sleep because of an old mattress. It’s a shame that the owner, who lives on the premises, couldn’t be bothered to come and talk to us personally or respond to my letter but thought giving us money would solve the problem ☹️ To end on a positive, the breakfasts are the best we have ever had and the service from all the staff was excellent."

"You might have an idea of what to expect from a hotel stay: to be greeted at the front desk, to have a bar and a breakfast service on the premises, to stay in a room which is serviced with fresh towels and clean linen... There's none of that here. We stayed for a week and some days saw no staff (there's a webcam in reception). There were tea and coffee making facilities in our room when we arrived but this was never replenished, the towels were never changed, the bed was never changed; the curtain was hanging off the rail; the bar downstairs was never opened. The website claims that breakfast can be booked for £10 per person but good luck finding anyone to book it with. There are a number of very pleasant hotels along Queens Road but sadly this isn't one of them."

"Lovely hotel, friendly staff, perfectly situated close to the beach and the Old Village. A small amount of free parking on site. Very impressed with the facilities inside the hotel - including indoor swimming pool, hot tub & sauna. Be careful with your choice of room, by selecting a non-sea view, standard room for 2 x people we were allocated an accessible room right next to reception/main entrance on ground floor, which was really noisy, with very little privacy. Such a shame as the rest of our experience there was so good."

"Very much enjoyed our stay at the Clifton Hotel. We had the Seaview suite which was lovely spacious and very well equipped. We were lucky with the weather and even sat on the balcony . Service from David and Carys was excellent, nothing too much trouble. Freshly cooked breakfast every morning which was very good. We also had dinner from their bistro menu one evening which we enjoyed .Good recommendations from David for other dinner options , Pendletons in the high street and the Fisherman's Cottage Inn on the sea front. We would definitely stay here again."

"Had a lovely stay with friends at the Snowdon for a short break. The rooms were very comfortable, clean and spacious with a comfy bed. Breakfast was cooked fresh to order each morning with lots of choice on the menu. Excellent Eggs perfectly done with the full English. The hotel is very near to the cliff top path with great view of beach below and easy access to the lift if you don’t want to walk. Sally & Mike are full of information about the island and places to visit if you ask and there are lots of information leaflets if you need inspiration. We went to Osborne house which was a great day and interesting then relaxed with a meal overlooking Shanklin beach . Thank you for a smashing stay."

"We arrived mid morning on a Sunday - on arrival I had to phone the hotel number as we stood in the empty reception area to get someone to come and give us a room key, and we left the next morning ( again no-one at reception so we just left our key on the reception desk. We stayed for just the one night. This hotel had a very strange atmosphere/vibe. A great deal of the ground floor seemed to be closed up/not I use. I saw no other guests, in fact the whole place seemed deserted. and we did not book breakfast so I can’t comment on food. There was some very unusual furniture in the foyer area. Our room was for myself, my adult daughter and grandson and I’d understood I was had booked a room with 3 single beds, however on our arrival we were told this would not be possible and we were given a room with a double bed and a single bed. The room seemed clean and was quiet, the beds were comfortable and the shower was hot and efficient. The room was quite cramped and had a ridiculously huge old wooden desk which took up an unnecessary amount of space in the room. Location was peaceful, at the top of the cliff, very near to the entrance to Shanklin Chine which was definitely worth a visit. I would never choose this hotel again - I think it had been recently taken over but I would question why it seemed like it had been abandoned."
