The Hotel has a wonderful history being built in the Arts & Crafts style by the CHA walking charity in 1914 on the site of an 18th Century Farm House. The guesthouse/ hostel welcomed guests for almost 90 years before it was closed by the first foot and mouth epidemic in 2001, only to be thankfully redeveloped by the previous owners into the hotel that you see today. We recently discovered that the house also played hosts to the Sheffield and Manchester Ramblers, who were planning the famous Mass Trespass of Kinder Scout in 1930 which dramatically laid the foundations of the creation of the national right to roam and ultimately The Peak District National Park – Britain’s first. To uncover the reason for the names of our two hills that create this beautiful valley: Lose Hill and Win Hill, you have to go much further back in time to the Saxon period of the 650s AD when the Kings of Mercia and Wessex on Losehill and Northumbria on Winhill fought a titanic battle – Northumbria won and hence the name of Win Hill and Wessex and Mercia lost – giving us the name Lose Hill and the name of the hotel. As you can now see, the hotel is set amidst beautiful walking country with the enviable location based at the foot of Losehill at the start of the ridge walk leading to Mam Tor and ultimately the Edale Horseshoe. Whether it’s Losehill to Castleton, Winhill and Ladybower or a gentle stroll by the river we can help you with your walking plans. Many of the local villages are rich in history. Castleton, just 4 miles from the hotel, with its Norman Castle, is the only place in the country to mine the famous Blue John stone, which is mostly crafted into jewellery. Castleton is also the location of the Peak Park Visitor Centre with many shops, cafés and pubs. The famous ‘plague village’ of Eyam is only 20 minutes drive away. Beautiful Derwent Valley and the Ladybower Reservoir with the Derwent and Howden Dams are only 15 minutes drive away, (or a good walk over Winhill), where Barnes-Wallis first tested the ‘bouncing bomb’ of the Dambuster’s fame. Hathersage is famous for its Bronte Heritage, and Stanage Edge has been used for film locations. Glorious Chatsworth House and Haddon Hall are both within a 30 minute drive, as are the lovely market town of Bakewell and the spa town Buxton, with its famous Opera House and Pavillion Gardens.

Our cottage comfortably sleeps 4 people.You can start many beautiful walks in the Peak District National Park literally from our doorstep via Sunny Bank Lane & onto the Limestone Way. Or alternatively you are close to one of the most beautiful places in the Peak District - the Monsal Trail which is a traffic free 8.5 mile wheelchair friendly former old railway line a favourite for cyclists too.The Horse & Jockey pub is approximately 150 steps away from our back door. The bus stop is very close to us going into Buxton/Bakewell/Castleton/ Sheffield. Cherry Tree Cafe is literally a stones throw away from us and in the village we have a CO-OP, local bakery & Post Office. We have four tea rooms all serving great food & a posh restaurant for that special occasion. The surrounding areas provide excellent walking. The picturesque Derbyshire market town of Ashbourne is just some 3 miles away; the spa town of Buxton, and the historic houses of Chatsworth, Haddon Hall, Hardwick Hall and Kedleston are all within easy access. There is a shelf and rail with hangers for your clothing but no drawers so please be mindful of this. We have tried to keep the space as open as possible. The bathroom has a bath and walk in shower, sink and toilet.The living room has a 43 inch smart tv with apps including Netflix, Disney plus and prime. Netflix account is included in your stay. There is a large 4 seater snug velvet sofa and large armchair. Towards the dining area is a kitchen island with 6 round stools, built in wine fridge and pop up speakers. Perfect area for family and friends to gather for food or games. There is also a cocktail cabinet with a ice bucket, cocktail glasses and cocktail menu. Within this is also jigsaws and games and brochures of the local area attractions. The kitchen had a huge LG instaview fridge holding enough room for a large family for 2 weeks. A water dispenser and ice machine also and great freezer space. The kitchen has a double oven, perfect for large family meals. Induction hob, microwave, kettle, toaster, slow cooker, dishwasher and cafetiere. The kitchen window looks out to the back patio where there is a hot tub and tiki bar. There are patio doors out to this Astro turf area in the dining space. The garden is enclosed with a gate at the driveway to keep pets and children safe, however it opens onto a very quiet lane. If you follow the lane up you can go into the woods and down to cromford canal. Perfect for dog walkers. The front garden has a stunning view over the pond, a dining table, sofa area and table. Gas bbq, glass balcony, egg chair and children’s playhouse. The house is less than a 5 minute walk to one of 3 pubs, restaurants, fish and chips, small village shop and chocolatier! The house is a 25-30 minute walk to Matlock bath, 10 minute walk to Arkwright mills and 15 minute drive to Matlock. There is lots to do for all the family.
