🚴 How Long Does It Take to Cycle Xi’an City Wall?
Planning to cycle the entire loop? Set aside around 1.5–2 hours. If you’re like me and love stopping for photos or taking in the views, give yourself a little extra time!
📍 Where’s the Best Place to Start?
For first-time visitors, I’d recommend starting at 📍Yongning Gate (South Gate). It’s a popular entrance and a convenient starting point for exploring the surrounding area.
You can find bicycle rental stations near the South, North, East and West Gates. Some rental services allow you to return your bike at a different gate, but always check the rules before setting off. You don’t want to cycle all the way across the wall only to find out you have to return to where you started! 😅
💰 What to Know Before Renting a Bike
Before renting, check whether the stall is an official or authorised rental point. Here are a few things I’d check first:
- Check the price: Find out whether you’re paying by the hour or for a full loop.
- Ask about extra charges: Confirm the rental period and any late-return fees.
- Check the return location: Make sure you know where the bike needs to be returned.
- Inspect the bike: Test the brakes, tyres and bell before riding off.
🌇 What’s the Best Time to Cycle?
If you want to enjoy the sunset and night views in one visit, I’d suggest arriving at around 5:00 PM. You can cycle while the sky turns golden, then stay a little longer to see the city wall light up after dark.

If it’s your first visit, I’d start at ✅Yongning Gate (South Gate). It’s one of the most iconic gates along Xi’an City Wall, with an impressive gate tower that makes a great photo backdrop. You can also enjoy views of the surrounding city from the wall. Planning to cycle? This is a popular starting point, but remember to check the available entrances and bike rental arrangements before you go.
🧱 City Wall Walkway and Battlements
Love photos with an ancient vibe? Don’t miss the city wall walkway! The grey brick walls and rows of battlements give your pictures that classic historical look. 📸 I’d suggest taking a few wide-angle shots to capture the long stretch of the wall. Wearing Hanfu? Even better! The traditional outfit looks beautiful against the ancient architecture.
🏯 Southwest Corner of the City Wall
The corners of the wall are worth a stop too. From here, you can see the wall stretching out in different directions, giving you a better idea of just how massive it is. When the weather is clear, you can capture both the ancient architecture and the modern city in one shot. If you’re cycling, make sure to stop somewhere safe without blocking other visitors.
🏮 Xi’an City Wall at Night
For me, the city wall is especially beautiful from evening to night. 🌙 When the gate towers light up, their warm glow creates a completely different atmosphere from daytime. Try capturing the illuminated towers against the evening sky for some lovely night shots. If you have time, take a leisurely stroll and enjoy the views after dark.
💡 Tip: Lighting times may vary by season or event, so check the latest arrangements before visiting.
🏯 Wenchang Gate Area
If you’re interested in history and culture, consider exploring the area around ✅Wenchang Gate, which is near the Xi’an Stele Forest Museum. It’s a nice addition to your itinerary if you enjoy ancient architecture and historical sites. Just remember to check the museum’s opening hours and ticket arrangements separately if you plan to visit.

The subway is my recommended option, especially during busy periods when traffic can get quite heavy. Take Xi’an Metro Line 2 and get off at Yongningmen Station. From there, follow the signs to the South Gate entrance. It’s just a short walk away!

There are three hotels inside, so it might be a bit tricky to find the exact location. Regarding the all-in-one control panel, once you press to turn everything off, it's quite fiddly to find the buttons to turn things back on. This is an older five-star hotel, located just 5 minutes from Xi'an Railway Station, making it incredibly convenient if you're arriving by train.
The location is excellent, with two different subway stations at either end of the street, so you can choose the most convenient one for your needs.
The service was outstanding. We arrived early after an overnight train journey and were able to check in early, which allowed us to freshen up before heading out. When we left, our train schedule was a bit awkward, and they graciously allowed us a late checkout. This was a huge plus. It truly shows the quality service you expect from a star-rated hotel.
The hotel facilities are a bit dated, not quite matching new chain hotels, but the rooms and bathrooms are both very spacious. It still meets star hotel standards, which I personally appreciate.
The breakfast buffet offers a wide variety of options, including both Chinese and Western dishes, and even features Shaanxi specialty snacks. It saved us the trouble of finding food outside every morning, which was a great convenience.
Room cleaning was prompt, and amenities were always fully replenished.
The only minor drawback is that the lighting in the room was a bit dim, which is understandable for an older establishment.
The price is also very reasonable, not much more expensive than other places.
If possible, I would definitely recommend it to friends or stay here again on my next visit.DariINR 3,569

This is by far the best hotel I've stayed at in recent years!
The entire hotel staff is highly professional, and their excellent service is evident at every step of your stay. While waiting for a ride-hailing car in the lobby, staff members would proactively approach me to ask about my destination and offer guidance for travel if I had questions. When I was taking photos in the lobby, staff members would also come over to help me find good angles and assist with the pictures. Whether it was checking in, having breakfast, or being at the hotel's pool or bar... in every scenario during my stay, I felt meticulous and thoughtful service, with many proactive and attentive touches that made for a very comfortable experience.
I especially want to thank Flora Qiu Jianyue from the concierge team. We had three suitcases with us, and the booked car couldn't fit all of them, so we needed to move luggage back and forth. It was the scorching midday sun in Xi'an, and I was waiting in the shade with my three children. I called her over to avoid the sun, but she insisted on staying in the scorching sun to look after our luggage, helped us move it back and forth, and arranged for a different car. This small detail was truly heartwarming.
The hotel's predecessor was the historic People's Grand Hotel, now part of the Sofitel Legend brand. The building itself boasts a rich historical heritage, but it's impeccably maintained. The furniture and public areas are kept in pristine condition, appearing new and polished, and everything is meticulously cared for, striking a perfect balance between old and new.
The breakfast selection is abundant, and the taste is excellent. The toiletries provided in the room are Maison Caulières 'L'Aube des Sens,' with a sophisticated and gentle fragrance that I really enjoyed.
Both the hardware maintenance and the service awareness of all staff members are impeccable. You definitely shouldn't miss this hotel when you come to Xi'an.DariINR 20,213

Novotel Xi'an Bell Tower is located right in the city center, right next to the Bell Tower, making getting around super convenient! There's even a direct shuttle bus right outside the hotel. This hotel is located at the northern end of Xi'an's main thoroughfare, North Street, close to the 5A-rated Xi'an City Wall scenic area. It's well-connected with many bus stops nearby, though it's about a ten-minute walk to the Anyuanmen and Beidajie subway stations. The front desk staff were very friendly and check-in was quick. A special shout-out to the security guard at the entrance – I left my keys in the car, and he not only held onto them but also left a thoughtful note for me. The hotel lobby, elevator waiting areas, and rooms all feature an antique architectural style, perfect for taking photos in Hanfu. Overall, the stay was very comfortable, and the price was reasonable. Staff were very attentive and helpful. Because it was raining when we arrived at the hotel, the hot tea and towel offered was greatly appreciated. Front desk even escorted us to the room, giving us a quick briefing of the various amenities in the room. They were very efficient in answering any queries we have. It was also very clean. A very pleasant stay.
A reminder for guests taking the metro to get to the hotel… metro exit closest to the hotel does not have escalators to ground level. Exits do not always have both up and down escalators. We struggled a bit with our luggage, even though it was not super heavy.

The hotel is incredibly close to the subway station. There's a Luckin Coffee just a floor down from the public security bureau's subway passage next door. We went to try the Stir-fried Paomo at Huimin Street, and it really lived up to its internet-famous reputation – it was delicious! 👍 The room was very clean and tidy. The front desk must have upgraded our room type because it felt newer than the pictures online. The hairdryer provided by the hotel was really compact and effective, drying hair quickly without getting too hot. 👍👍👍 All the front desk staff were very warm and helpful, offering not only masks but also band-aids. The local snacks they recommended were all great, no misses there! When we checked out, we were a little late, but they still let us take our time packing up without charging an extra hourly fee. What I found most incredible was that the bedsheet in our room that day seemed to have a hole, but someone had embroidered a really beautiful flower over it (I took a photo at the time but can't find it now). We had a wonderful stay at this hotel. The room was clean, spacious, and gave us plenty of room to move around. The toilet was also perfectly clean. The only minor downside is that the tile flooring looked a bit worn out, but it didn't impact our stay. The family room was perfect for the kids and my kidd love the bunk bed. A huge plus for Muslim travelers is the close proximity to halal food, making dining very easy and convenient.We want to give a very special mention to the hotel travel consultant, Ms. Duan. She was incredibly helpful despite the language barrier. She always gave us a very prompt reply to our questions. Her tour package arrangements were highly competitive compared to outside packages, so we decided to book with her instead. The hotel I chose for this trip is really satisfying! From booking to leaving the store, every link makes people feel very comfortable. Excellent location! Right in the heart of Xi'an city center, near the Bell Tower. There are tons of restaurants downstairs, and it's within walking distance to food streets like Muslim Quarter. Transportation is convenient, about an 8-minute walk to Beidajie subway station, and the subway takes about half an hour to Xi'an North High-Speed Rail Station, which is super handy. The hotel lobby and restaurant are on the 4th floor; the breakfast variety and quality were just average. There's a drink station on every floor with free bottled water. We got upgraded to a deluxe room, which was more spacious. While not super luxurious, it was very comfortable, and daily housekeeping was prompt and thorough. The front desk lady was gentle and efficient. On the 9th floor, the cleaning staff was quick and diligent, cleaning the fish tank until it was spotless. It's not easy to find good accommodation in Chang'an, but this place, at 100 yuan, offers a decent night's stay. The decor is similar to a budget hotel, without the greasy, grimy, old-fashioned feel of typical low-end hotels. The room was bright and tidy, and the bedding was clean. The bathroom fixtures weren't high-end but were functional, though the slightly sloped counter leaked water onto the floor, making it a bit slippery – so be careful. You can see North Street from the window, and on the ground floor of the elevator lobby is the affordable Qiulin Snack City. At night, there was a constant rumble from motorcycles and low-frequency vibrations from large vehicles. Cleanliness: The bedding is changed daily and is very comfortable.
Location: On both sides, there are fruit stands, convenience stores, and snacks galore. These aren't trendy 'influencer' spots, so you can walk into any of them and expect delicious food.
There were three of us staying, and the manager would arrange rooms on the day of arrival, even offering an upgrade if available. This was my fourth time in Xi'an, and this stay offered exceptional value for money. The excellent service significantly enhanced my overall travel mood, making this trip to Xi'an very enjoyable. I arrived at Building 3, Xian Renmin Dasha, no reception staff. I rang the desk telephone as instructed only to be instructed that I hade been moved the the Grand Mercure Hotel next door. This hotel is good with friendly staff, very clean facilities and a breakfast that is part Chinese-Western. Next door in another hotel is access to a swimming pool and gym, which I used, and had sole use at 0700hrs in the morning. The front desk permitted late check-out to 1400hrs, which was ideal to facilitate not having to carry a bag around Xian, as I then travelled direct to the airport.DariINR 5,653

My child stayed at this hotel for a study trip in 2023, and this year, they insisted on staying here again. The hotel service is excellent, and there are many local eateries nearby. It's also very close to the Bell Tower and the City Wall. The room was quite clean, and I really liked that the window could open for a natural breeze. The breakfast selection was also quite rich. In the evenings, they even called to ask if we wanted tremella soup, which was a very thoughtful touch. The only minor drawback was that the bathroom door in room 6010 didn't close perfectly, but it didn't affect our overall stay. Staying a night in Chang'an, dreaming of the Han and Tang dynasties. My recent stay at the Han and Tang Museum Resort Residence was truly the highlight of my trip.
The residence is located in the heart of the city, close to the magnificent Bell and Drum Towers, yet peacefully removed from the hustle and bustle. Upon entering, I was greeted by golden bricks paving the floor and an array of antique wooden furnishings. The exquisite carvings and thoughtful arrangement of every object evoked a sense of ancient heritage, as if I had stepped into a thousand-year-old mansion. Each step revealed a new scene, steeped in a rich, ancient charm.
The rooms were spacious and comfortable, featuring a 2.1-meter-wide bed with down bedding, ensuring an undisturbed night's sleep. The bathroom facilities were excellent, with a wet and dry separation and comprehensive smart appliances, blending modern convenience seamlessly with traditional aesthetics. The residence also boasts a tea room, calligraphy room, gym, and a children's play area. During my leisure time, I could brew tea, practice calligraphy, or work out. It offered enjoyment for every member of the family, young and old.
The hosts were incredibly sincere, treating guests like dear friends. Everything was meticulously arranged, showing thoughtful consideration in every detail. Staying here was more than just a night's rest; it was an immersive experience of slow living, steeped in the elegance of the ancient capital.

My friend and I stayed at this Hanting for New Year's Eve, and it was full of pleasant surprises from check-in to check-out – I really have to praise it! As soon as we entered, we received two bottles of Bingfeng, a local specialty from Shaanxi, instantly giving us a sense of local culture and the hotel's thoughtfulness. How clever of them! The room was impeccably clean, not a speck of dust in any corner, which made us feel very comfortable. The staff were also excellent communicators, responding promptly to any requests, making the entire stay smooth and pleasant.
I especially want to highlight a few details that really stood out! The comfort of the bed and pillows was incredible; all our travel fatigue vanished, and we fell asleep instantly, sleeping soundly until morning. The air conditioning was surprisingly powerful; despite the extremely cold New Year's Eve night, the room was toasty warm, and the temperature was just right without being dry. The most heartwarming moment was when it suddenly started snowing as we left for New Year's Eve celebrations. Without a word, the front desk handed each of us an umbrella. Celebrating New Year's Eve under an umbrella in the snow – that warmth will stay with me forever!
The value for money and overall experience were both top-notch. My friend and I have already agreed to stay here again next time we visit!
