Zhujiajiao Ancient Town

When I visit a water town like Zhujiajiao, I'd definitely make time for a boat ride! 🛶 Sitting back as the boat glides along the canals, with traditional houses and ancient stone bridges on both sides, is such a lovely way to take in the scenery.

There are Line A and Line B options, with boarding points including 📍Kezhi Garden Pier, 📍City God Temple Pier and 📍North Street Pier. Just remember to check the route and boarding location before booking so you won't end up at the wrong pier!

🕛 Zhujiajiao Ancient Town Opening Hours

Zhujiajiao Ancient Town is open all day, so you can plan your visit around your own schedule.

⚠️ Just keep in mind that some paid attractions, such as gardens and art galleries, have their own opening hours and last admission times. If there's a particular spot you don't want to miss, check its opening hours before heading over to avoid a wasted trip!

💡 My tip: I'd recommend visiting during the day so you have enough time to explore the gardens, try local snacks, enjoy a boat ride, and snap plenty of photos.

📍 Must-Visit Attractions in Zhujiajiao Ancient Town

🌉 Fangsheng Bridge

Zhujiajiao Ancient Town

When it comes to Zhujiajiao, Fangsheng Bridge is a must-see! 🌉 This iconic five-arched stone bridge stretches across the Caogang River and is one of the town's most recognisable landmarks.

Take your time walking across the bridge and enjoy the view of traditional houses, peaceful canals, and little boats drifting along the water. It's also a lovely spot for photos if you want to capture that classic Jiangnan water town vibe.

🏮 North Street

Zhujiajiao Ancient Town

Once you're in Zhujiajiao, I'd recommend starting with a stroll along North Street. This charming old street is lined with traditional buildings, little shops, and plenty of local snacks, making it a fun place to explore at your own pace.

Don't just walk straight through! Pop into the shops that catch your eye, browse for unique souvenirs, and grab some local treats whenever something looks tempting. 😋 It's the kind of place where you can easily spend more time than planned, especially if you love food and old-town photography.

🌿 Kezhi Garden

Zhujiajiao Ancient Town

Fancy a quieter spot away from the busy streets? Head to Kezhi Garden, a traditional Chinese garden with beautiful courtyards, pavilions, and landscaped scenery. 🌿

I love how different the atmosphere is here compared with the lively shops along North Street. It's a nice place to slow down, admire the traditional architecture, and take photos with a classic Chinese-style backdrop. If you're planning to visit, remember that Kezhi Garden requires a ticket, so check whether a combo ticket is available before you go.

📮 Great Qing Post Office

Zhujiajiao Ancient Town

For something a little different, make a stop at the Great Qing Post Office. 📮 This historic site offers a glimpse into postal services during the Qing Dynasty, adding a bit of history to your water town adventure.

If you're interested in old buildings and local heritage, it's worth including in your walking route. You can explore it along the way while wandering through the nearby streets and canals, so there's no need to make a separate trip just to visit.

🏯 City God Temple

Zhujiajiao Ancient Town

Want to see another side of Zhujiajiao beyond its bridges and canals? Drop by the City God Temple to discover more about the town's traditional religious culture and local history. 🙏

It's a good stop if you enjoy exploring cultural landmarks and seeing traditional Chinese architecture up close. You can easily combine it with a walk around the nearby old streets. Just remember to respect the temple's customs and keep your voice down while visiting.

🚣 Caogang River Cruise

Zhujiajiao Ancient Town

If your feet are getting tired from walking, hop aboard a traditional-style boat and enjoy Zhujiajiao from the water. As you glide along the river, you'll get lovely views of the old houses, stone bridges, and canals from a different angle. It's a relaxing way to experience the town, especially on a pleasant day when you can snap some beautiful photos along the way. 📸

Depending on your ticket and route, boarding points may include 📍Kezhi Garden Pier, 📍City God Temple Pier, and 📍North Street Pier. Check the available routes, departure points, and ticket prices before booking so you can plan your boat ride more easily.

🍡 Must-Try Foods in Zhujiajiao Ancient Town

1. 🍙 Grandma's Zongzi (Sticky Rice Dumplings)

Zhujiajiao Ancient Town

When it comes to traditional snacks, zongzi (sticky rice dumplings) are a must-try! You'll find different fillings, including savoury pork, pork with salted egg yolk, and sweet red bean paste.

The savoury versions are especially satisfying, with soft, sticky rice packed with flavour and wrapped in fragrant bamboo leaves. If you're not sure which one to choose, I'd start with the classic fresh pork zongzi or the salted egg yolk version.

2. 🥩 Braised Pork (Zha Rou)

Zhujiajiao Ancient Town

If you love rich, savoury flavours, look out for zha rou, a traditional braised pork dish often associated with Jiangnan cuisine. The pork is slow-cooked until tender, giving it a deep reddish-brown colour and a deliciously savoury flavour.

It's a good choice if you're looking for something more filling than street snacks. I'd pair it with a bowl of rice for a satisfying meal, especially if you need a break from all that walking!

3. 🌸 Begonia Cake (Haitang Gao)

Zhujiajiao Ancient Town

Keep an eye out for Haitang Gao, a traditional Chinese pastry named after the begonia flower because of its shape. 🌸 It's commonly made with a soft, cake-like batter and a sweet filling, often red bean paste.

The outside is lightly crisp while the inside is soft and sweet, making it a lovely little treat to enjoy as you wander along the old streets. If you spot a stall making them fresh, I'd say get one while it's still warm!

4. 🥮 You Dun Zi (Deep-Fried Radish Fritters)

Zhujiajiao Ancient Town

Try you dun zi, a traditional Chinese street snack made by frying batter with shredded radish until golden brown. The outside is crispy, while the radish filling inside is soft and slightly sweet.

They're especially tempting when freshly fried, so if you see a stall preparing a fresh batch, you know what to do! 😋 Just let it cool for a bit before taking your first bite, as the filling can be very hot.

5. 🍯 Sweet Glutinous Rice Lotus Root

Zhujiajiao Ancient Town

For something sweet and chewy, look for glutinous rice-stuffed lotus root, a classic Jiangnan-style dessert. It's made by filling lotus root with glutinous rice and cooking it with sugar until tender and sweet.

Once sliced, the lotus root has a lovely chewy texture with sticky rice packed inside. If you enjoy traditional Chinese desserts, this is a nice treat to try after sampling a few savoury snacks.

6. 🫛 Smoked Green Beans

Zhujiajiao Ancient Town

Want to try something a little different? Look out for smoked green beans, a snack known for its distinctive smoky and savoury flavour.

They're a nice option if you prefer something less sweet, and some shops may sell them in packaged form, making them easy to bring home as souvenirs. My suggestion? Try a small portion first, as the seasoning and texture can vary between shops. You might just discover a new favourite snack!

🚇 How to Get to Zhujiajiao Ancient Town?

🚇 Take the Metro

If you're starting from downtown Shanghai, taking the metro is a convenient option, especially if you want to avoid traffic jams. You can travel to ✅Hongqiao Railway Station and transfer to 📍Shanghai Metro Line 17, then get off at 📍Zhujiajiao Station.

Once you arrive, you'll still need to walk or take local transport to reach the ancient town, as the metro station isn't right inside the scenic area.

💡 My tip: If you'd rather save your energy for exploring the old streets, check the latest local shuttle bus arrangements, including the 1510 bus, before setting off. Also, allow some extra time for the journey from the station to the ancient town entrance.

🚌 Take the Bus

Another option is the ✅Hu-Zhu High-Speed Express, which connects central Shanghai with the Zhujiajiao area. One suggested departure point is around Pu'an Road and Jinling Road, near People's Square, with the bus heading towards Zhujiajiao Bus Station.

This can be a good alternative if you're staying near the departure point and prefer not to make multiple metro transfers. Just remember that travel time depends on traffic, so check the latest bus schedule and boarding location before leaving. 🚌

🚗 Take a Taxi or Book a Private Transfer

Travelling with family, a group of friends, or little ones? A taxi or private transfer may be the more comfortable choice. 🚗 You won't have to worry about changing metro lines or carrying your bags between stations, and you can head straight towards Zhujiajiao.

I was drawn to the hotel's Chinese cultural design, so I specifically booked two rooms and brought my family to experience it, while also taking the opportunity to visit Zhujiajiao. Before check-in, a butler proactively contacted me to ask about our preferences and license plate information. On the day of arrival, a butler was already assigned to us – a special shout-out to Butler Cox, who waited for us in the underground parking lot, helped with our luggage, and handled the check-in process. The entire experience was thoughtful and thorough. They also stayed in touch during our stay, providing convenient services. The rooms were spacious and comfortable, featuring a garden-style courtyard and rustic, historically rich architecture. The breakfast was small yet excellent, and dinner was exquisite and delicious. It was a wonderful experience 👍

Zhujiajiao Ancient Town is perfect for a leisurely, slow-paced trip, and the Jingting Hotel perfectly embodies that relaxed lifestyle. The hotel is converted from the former Yang family residence, retaining its ancient architectural style. With three courtyards and a total of 8 guest rooms, the environment is elegant and private. The design and decor details are exquisite. The entrance hall features traditional Chinese furniture and elements like wood, bamboo, and rattan, and you can take your time to appreciate each piece of decorative calligraphy and painting. Inside the rooms, ancient charm blends harmoniously with modern touches, and the smart lighting control system is convenient to use. The hotel provides disposable bath towels, steam eye masks, facial masks, and dental kits. The toiletries are Aesop's Cedarwood scent – a great selection. Breakfast and afternoon tea are served at the 'First Tea House in Jiangnan,' and lunch and dinner vouchers can also be used there. Taking the hotel's hand-cranked boat to the tea house for a meal is a truly unique experience. The hotel staff are friendly and kind, like a neighbor's kid. The hotel also has three kittens and one dog. The kittens are super cute and well-behaved, even coming up to you for pets. At checkout, the staff also accompanied us by boat to the exit, so we didn't have to carry our luggage, which was excellent.

We chose the CITIC Pacific Zhujiajiao Jinjiang Hotel for our short weekend getaway, and our two-night stay exceeded expectations. The hotel's location is excellent, very close to Zhujiajiao Ancient Town, making it super convenient for sightseeing and dining. It's a quiet oasis amidst the hustle and bustle, with a tranquil environment perfect for escaping the city and relaxing. We booked a deluxe twin room, which was spacious and bright. The bedding was soft and comfortable, ensuring a very restful sleep. The room was clean and tidy, facilities were well-maintained, and toiletries were complete. The overall decor was simple yet elegant. Check-in and check-out processes were smooth. The staff were polite and enthusiastic, responded promptly, and provided thoughtful and detailed service. The hotel's surroundings are very pleasant, perfect for leisurely strolls. After exploring the ancient town, it was nice to return to the hotel to rest, enjoying a slow and relaxing pace that was truly stress-relieving. There are plenty of dining options nearby, and getting a taxi is also very convenient. The overall value for money is excellent, making it suitable for both friends gathering or a short leisure trip. The two-day stay was very pleasant and trouble-free. We successfully escaped the city's hustle and bustle and truly relaxed. If we visit Zhujiajiao again, we'll definitely prioritize this hotel, and I highly recommend it to friends looking for a short getaway nearby!

We stayed here for two days with our whole family and felt very comfortable; it offers great value for money. The staff were very amiable. The hotel has an older, classic decor style, and while the facilities are a bit dated, they are clean and well-maintained. The rooms aren't huge, but they have high ceilings. The hotel grounds are extensive with plenty of parking, and there's a private garden to explore. Directly opposite is a large public park complete with walking paths, sports courts, and fitness equipment. It's a pleasant 20-minute walk to the old town, which is quiet at night, making for a very enjoyable evening view. The breakfast selection isn't vast, but the quality is high – it's the best I've had among hotels in the same price range. Highlights include congee, zha rou (braised pork), and homemade pudding, all well worth the 128 CNY per person. Additionally, I have a few suggestions for the hotel to consider: 1. Install a few EV charging stations for guests; 2. Offer some simple late-night snacks, like noodles or congee. There are no dining options nearby, and the hotel's own restaurant closes at 8 PM. For a late-night bite, you either have to rely on instant noodles from a vending machine or order takeout (which requires going downstairs to pick it up, as it's not delivered to the room); 3. Take some proper photos of the room types and the hotel environment for your online platforms. The photos on Ctrip were quite sloppy and made me hesitant when booking.

Overall it's not bad, clean and hygienic But there is basically no service. The two front desk staff were chatting when checking in. But it doesn't matter, the efficiency is still very high, and it was all done in less than a minute. You need to go to the elevator to get your toothbrush and other things yourself. Although it is not very convenient, it is very environmentally friendly, which I support. When I checked in at night, I don't know what was going on in the toilet. There was a strange noise every once in a while, and it rang all night. Please check it carefully. When I checked in, there was a children's activity, and the breakfast was reserved. This hotel enjoys an excellent location – right opposite the rear entrance of Zhujiajiao Ancient Town, making it extremely convenient to access the historic area. Although it is not situated inside the old town itself, its position is arguably one of the best you could find. That said, the property feels more like a government building than a leisure hotel. The atmosphere is rather formal and lacks the charm or warmth one might expect from a holiday stay. The set-up is a little unusual too: there is only one person managing the reception, and the accommodation is in a separate building from the front desk, which makes it somewhat inconvenient. On the positive side, breakfast was quite good, with a decent number of staff attending in the dining area. The service attitude was friendly, though overall staffing felt limited, which may explain why the hotel seemed rather quiet and lacking in ambience. In summary, the location is hard to beat, and breakfast service was pleasant. However, the overall feel is more institutional than relaxing, so it may not suit those looking for a lively or cosy holiday experience.

I chose this hotel on a whim, and it turned out to be surprisingly good! It's right next to the scenic area, just a three-minute walk away. It's very quiet, with beautiful surroundings, and the decor and layout are very stylish. Outside, there are tables and chairs where you can have tea and chat, plus a swing that both kids and adults can enjoy – it's a perfect blend of lively and peaceful. The front desk lady saw that we were a family of three and kindly upgraded our room for free. The room was very clean and spacious, and the flowers by the back door were in full bloom. After a hot shower and lying down on the comfy bed, the fatigue from my rainy bike ride completely vanished. The breakfast area isn't huge, but it has everything you could want, and the food was quite tasty. It was still raining the next day, and the hotel thoughtfully provided umbrellas ☂️, which was a lovely touch. I'll definitely stay here again next time I visit – great environment, quiet, excellent location, and wonderful service.

I took my father on a three-day self-driving trip to Qingpu. I have severe潔癖 (mysophobia) and high standards for cleanliness, so typical guesthouses are unacceptable to me. I wanted to book a proper hotel, and after comparing a few, I felt that 'Ji Hotel' offered good value for money, though I didn't have high expectations. To my surprise, I was incredibly satisfied! The front desk lady was gentle and friendly, the room was simple and comfortable, and I couldn't find any fault with the sanitary facilities. We took a short trip to the surrounding area with my parents during the New Year's holiday. In this cold winter, we were filled with warmth and enthusiastic hospitality. The hotel's design style was very simple and elegant, reportedly designed by the owner himself. The rooms were clean, comfortable, and practically furnished; every detail showed the owner's thoughtfulness. The owners were incredibly friendly and approachable, personally arranging our check-in, introducing us to nearby attractions, and even showing us the way. In the evening, they recommended a delicious beef bone restaurant nearby, and the next morning they got up early to prepare a hearty breakfast for us. They were always ready to offer help and advice whenever needed. Although our stay was short, this guesthouse left a very deep impression on us. Zizai 25 was an absolute highlight of my trip. The homestay is located in a quiet, well-maintained residential area not far from the old town of Zhujiajiao – far enough away from the hustle and bustle to truly unwind, yet still easily accessible on foot or by a short taxi ride. It's ideal if you want to explore the water town during the day and return to a peaceful, stylish environment in the evening. The house itself is decorated with incredible attention to detail: modern, minimalist furnishings with warm wood tones, large windows letting in plenty of light, beautiful books, and small design elements everywhere. You can immediately tell that someone with taste and heart has furnished it. Our room was very clean, spacious, and we slept wonderfully on the comfortable mattresses. I would especially like to commend the host. Check-in was warm and welcoming; all our questions were answered patiently, and we received many helpful tips on restaurants, photo spots, and walks in Zhujiajiao. You feel more like a welcome guest among friends than in an anonymous accommodation. Breakfast was also lovely: lovingly prepared, with local specialties and a few Western options – perfect for a relaxed start to the day. The entire atmosphere in the house is quiet, relaxed, and very pleasant; you can read in the common areas, enjoy a coffee, or simply admire the view of the greenery. Overall, a wonderful place to relax and enjoy yourself – we would definitely return and highly recommend Zizai 25 to anyone looking for a stylish, clean, and warmly run homestay near Zhujiajiao Ancient Town.

The room is great, with all the facilities. We originally booked a room for two, but the beautiful person in charge, Amy, warmly upgraded us to a room after seeing that we had children. The room is spacious and has a beautiful river view. It is close to the ancient town and has both... It’s such a comfortable choice to appreciate thousands of years of history and enjoy modern facilities. The housekeeper's little sister Qingqing is also very responsible, and her family has thousands of B&Bs across the country. From now on, she will give priority to Linglong when traveling.

When I came to Zhujiajiao for a business trip, I chose a homestay to try it. I felt very good. It was newly renovated. The design was simple but not simple. The space was spacious. The deluxe double room was large. It is worth noting that the faucet in the room is very useful, you can adjust the direction at will, asked the proprietress, she said that the faucet was specially bought and replaced, and I felt the intention in the details. The details determine success or failure 👍🏽

✨ [First glance into the room] I feel that the house design is very warm, there is a fireplace, winter is very suitable, very atmospheric. 🙋 [For the landlord, I want to say] The landlord came to pick us up in person and introduced the use of housing facilities in detail. Also took us to the snack bar. 📍 [For the convenience of the surroundings, I want to say] The surroundings are very convenient, and it is very convenient to go to the ancient town. 🛏 [Housing facilities I must mention] The house is well maintained, the facilities are very clean, the bedding is clean and comfortable.

This time I went out as long as I said, and I found this homestay casually. Very neat and clean, and the bedding is snow-white. The decoration is not the kind of business decoration, it has its own style, concrete floor, a lot of wood and iron industrial decoration, the bedroom bed and hot water are very comfortable, I confirmed that it is gas hot water before moving in, and I really don’t like that kind of electricity. Yes, wash your hands and shrink your feet, and you will have to wait to wash them later. Stayed for two days, the courtyard was awesome, and the lights were beautiful at night. The weather is good these days, and outdoor barbecues and outdoor movies are very suitable. We are 7 big and 1 young, and the boss also opened a new room for us that they used to be on duty. grateful. But there are mosquitoes in the house. The electric mosquito coil hasn't been found on the first day. I woke up in the middle of the night.

I came to Zhujiajiao Ancient Town with my family and accidentally stayed at Banshe No. 1 store. She was amazed at all of a sudden. The half house stood by the water, the lake was clear and the scenery was pleasant; the interior decoration was elegant and chic, the environment was clean and tidy, and the butler service was in place; the room bedding and bathing facilities were high-end and comfortable; The breakfast provided the next day was free. I heard that it was made by the proprietress herself, which was very rich and delicious. I will definitely stay at this next time I come to the ancient town. Is a recommended quality homestay!

While visiting Zhujiajiao Ancient Town, I chose a guesthouse nearby, and it truly exceeded my expectations, offering fantastic value for money! The hostess was incredibly welcoming, and the rooms were spotlessly clean. Downstairs, there's a well-equipped gym with treadmills and other fitness equipment, along with a massage chair and a mahjong table. You can even enjoy karaoke with friends! The breakfast selection was varied and plentiful, and a wide variety of complimentary snacks and drinks were also provided. It's just a 10-minute walk to Zhujiajiao Ancient Town, making it super convenient for exploring. I highly recommend this place to everyone – my first guesthouse experience was excellent, and I'll definitely bring my friends next time!

💡 Zhujiajiao Ancient Town Travel Tips

💡 Travel Tips✅ Practical Advice

How long should you spend here?

I'd set aside half a day to a full day. That gives you enough time to explore the old streets, visit a few attractions, try local snacks, and enjoy a boat ride without rushing.

Wear comfortable shoes

There's quite a bit of walking along stone-paved streets, so sneakers or comfortable flats are your best bet. Your feet will thank you later!

Check tickets in advance

The ancient town itself is free to enter, but some attractions, such as Kezhi Garden, require separate tickets. Check the latest prices and opening hours before visiting.

Check boat ride details

Want to enjoy a cruise? Check the available routes, boarding points, ticket prices, and operating hours beforehand so you can plan your ride more easily.

Plan your transport

If you're taking Metro Line 17 to Zhujiajiao Station, remember that you'll still need to walk or arrange local transport to reach the ancient town. Leave some extra time for this part of the journey.

Visit on a weekday if possible

Weekends and public holidays can get pretty crowded. If you prefer a more relaxed stroll and want to take photos without too many people in the background, a weekday visit is worth considering.

📱 Quick Tip: Get Your China eSIM Ready Before Your Trip!

Don't forget to sort out your China eSIM before leaving! Whether you're checking maps, figuring out transport, hunting for local snacks, or sharing those pretty water town photos, having mobile data makes everything so much easier. I'd recommend getting your China eSIM on Trip.com before your trip, so you can get connected without the hassle of looking for Wi-Fi when you arrive. ✨
