The photos provided by the operators are extremely deceptive. The accomodation is old and run down. The shower tiles were painted at some stage, and it is now peeling off both the floor and the walls. The “updated” vanity basin and tap are poorly sizes and you are unable to fully wash your face due to the shape and size of the basin with a shorter necked faucet . There is no complete enclosure for water in the shower resulting in you flooding the bathroom each time you shower- we ended up using the common showers in the passageway to attempt keep our room dry. The toilet paper is only single ply so bring your own if you decide to stay here !! Our towels and sheets had stains on them and the pillows are flat and lumpy. I wouldn’t swim in the pool unless you’ve had your latest tetanus shots. We were followed back to the accommodation by a slightly hostile homeless person one night which was slightly unnerving for our teenage daughters. The nicest part of this accommodation is the outdoor BBQ area. The breakfast provided smelt ok, but we decided to eat at the cafe at the marina each day as we were heading out to the reef and islands anyways. We decided to stay here and save money as generally we are out during the day and only need a comfortable bed and a clean shower- next time we will be going back to our regular accommodation closer to the Esplanade. The Mantra Hotel has outstanding location. It is directly in front of the Woolworths supermarket - the best option in central Cairns. It's also virtually opposite (the esplanade side)the lagoon public beachfront swimming pool. Finally it's just a 5 minute walk from Cairns Cruise Terminal, with outstanding day trips to Green Island, Fitzroy Island and the Reef. I booked a sea view room. When you enter the room, you don't see the ocean, but a building across the road. However, the view from the balcony was amazing. The balcony overlooks the main features of lagoon on the sea front. During the day it is great view - the lagoon pools and sea in the background. At night you cannot see the sea (as to be expected) but you have the amazing lagoon lights, which makes it very desirable and even romantic. Our room was at the end of block, which overlooks a shopping mall (no car noise) - looking right from the balcony is the lagoon view and looking left is a mountain view. However, from 2:00pm to 6:00pm the sun comes directly into the balcony area, which means it unusable until sun sets. Of course if you don't mind baking in the sun on the balcony, this is not really a concern. The room itself is pretty basic. The mini fridge of OK and TV has domestic channels only - no cable TV for BBC/CNN. The bathroom is of a good size. There is combined shower & bath. However, when using the shower, it can slightly flood this bathroom. A shower curtain may be desirable because the glass panel is not sufficient enough. At $225 per night this hotel was not cheap and you can better deals by coming in the off-season OR going bit further down the esplanade, and choosing another hotel. The Mantra does have its own pool and it is wonderfully heated, with normal deck chairs you would expect at 4 star hotel. However, the pool gets very little natural sunlight, because it of its location between 2 buildings. Overall, the hotel has amazing location, and it is still recommended, despite the shortcomings mentioned. My final note: When we checked in, I was impressed with the level of service provided by the receptionist. She had a very welcome attitude and a wonderful personality.
Surfers Beach Holiday Apartments

Surfers Beach Holiday Apartments was a great place to stay for our family. The management was helpful. Rooms were of a good size. The location is quiet. It is a easy walk to catch the G:tram. This makes getting to Surfers Paradise or other locations easy. Riding the G is also much cheaper and easier than trying to find parking for the car. While we were there, there were few people using the pool. Our grandkids had a great time... and mostly had the pool to themselves. I didn't realize there wasn't an elevator.(My fault for not checking.) Being on the third floor normally wouldn't have been an issue. Because of health issues for one of our family members, it would have been easier if we had been on a lower floor. If I had contacted the management when booking they said they would have tried to give us a lower floor. It's a great place and I highly recommend it.

This hotel is stunning. The staff at check in & out were super friendly. Room was modern, very clean and the bed was huge & extremely comfortable. Close to shops, restaurants. Public transport and the city. Highly recommend this hotel. We stayed in the deluxe room on level 1. Only let down is, there is no restaurant at the hotel so no breakfast room service.

Booked a standard room with two double beds as a room for our family of 3 (2 adults and a teen), to sleep at after an event on the Gold Coast. Whilst not their issue our navigation app couldn't locate the property and when I called, I was told to use google maps. Reception was polite and on check in provided a physical room key and an electronic tag, and directions for parking. Our room was 1010, which is on the ground floor. A corridor left of the main foyer winds around, going outside and having a more motel vibe, outdoor corridors were tiled and wet and slippery. Struggled to open the door to our room with the key, unpacked and left for our function The room was very basic as expected, with shower, bath, toilet, kitchenette and tv. A sliding door to access a shared grass courtyard by the pool. We did not use any of the room or hotel facilities, beyond the bed and bathroom. After attending our event, we retuned around 9.30pm, and could not open the room door. Bar staff directed us to Mae, she was considerate, she and my husband could not get the lock to open. We ended up accessing the room via the sliding door at the rear, the screen door was unlocked (which was on us, as we opened the glass door to air the room out - it smelled stale - and assumed the screen was locked), Mae was apologetic i am thankful we returned early enough that staff were still on-site. Beds were ok, corridor was noisy especially luggage carts being wheeler through. Was fit for purpose, but the lock/security was concerning. It appeared the lock had been replaced by a handyman vs a locksmith. I wouldn't return
Daydream Island Resort

I first visited this island 8 years ago and unfortunately not much has changed. Restaurants - given there are only 2 restaurants that you can eat from outside of the breakfast buffet I would have expected the menus to have more diversity, healthier options and cater for dietaries. Only one of these restaurants is open for lunch and again the menu doesn’t change. Which means you could be eating ALOT of pizza, chips and pasta during your stay. Convenience store - there is a gift shop that sells drinks and crisps but there isn’t anywhere on the island to grab anything last minute in terms of amenities, variation of snacks or milk etc. I am really pleased that I packed daily snacks for the babies otherwise it would have made it tricky. Spa - I had booked a Mother’s Day facial and 90minute massage in. Only to be told when I asked reception where to go that the spa had shut down and isn’t looking to reopen anytime soon. This was incredibly frustrating as it was too late for us to book an excursion for the day giving the time and availability. Lovers cove - This is a beautiful spot but don’t be sucked in by the advertised sunset cocktails. They open at 5pm, only had 1 cocktail available on tap and one beer. The que was so long due to the slow service that it took 25mins to get a cocktail and then the server popped ice in my husbands beer! Live music - this was advertised 2 out of the 3 nights we were there but it didn’t happen once. Wildlife - there is a lot of this on the island, often joining you for breakfast and dinner. In many ways it is welcomed however I’m not sure the treatment of the birds/kangaroos is entirely ok by the staff. The birds are often kicked and the kangaroos are often fed serviettes to distract them out of the public spaces. Looking into hiring an expert who can safely look after them and ensure they aren’t hindering the guests too much would be a lovely thing to see here. Staff - I’m not sure we met one Australian member of staff during our trip. All of them seemed to be backpackers who were super friendly, chatty and helpful however given they turned over rather quickly they didn’t seem to know a lot about the island, why things weren’t open or what to do in terms of trips. One additional thing to note is everything on the island is pretty expensive which one would expect however the quality I’m afraid isn’t there. Most of the food they serve (wontons, spring rolls, chips, hash browns etc) are all frozen. If you are looking for a budget island stay in terms of service and amenities and are happy with limited options for food and take your own snacks but open to pay $10 for a small can of beer then this could be the right place for you. Unfortunately after given this island 2 chances I won’t be returning with my family!

Stayed recently during the week so no noise from Cali beach club next door. In fact perfectly quiet once balcony door was shut. But hey, your in Surfers Paradise so you can't expect absolute silence. Rooms were a bit in need of a paint but so what. It was immaculately clean, smelt lovely and was cheap as well. Bathroom amenities smelt beautiful. Big containers of shampoo and conditioner and body lotion and bath gel/ hand wash. I didn't have to use any of my own supplies except toothpaste and toothbrush. The girls on reception were extremely kind and welcoming. I would definitely stay again.

Whilst our stay in the Hotel X Suite was pleasant, there was nothing memorable about it. The suite was spacious, fitted with modern conveniences (ie. electric blockout curtains, Dyson hairdryer, zip tap and smart tv) and was generally comfortable. Unfortunately, the bathroom lacked privacy as it overlooked the street and directly faced another building across the road so the blinds were always drawn preventing natural light from coming in. Also, there is no separate toilet with lockable door. Although, the toiletries were nice and the shower quite spacious. Service was friendly but lacked a personal touch. Breakfast at Bisou Bisou had a limited menu but the food was overall good. The rooftop bar (Iris) had great views, a good tapas menu and relaxing vibe. The location of the hotel is convenient, within walking distance of the buzzing James Street precinct and a short car ride to the city centre.
