Must-Have Apps in China

Day 1: Central Harbin and Russian Architecture

Start your harbin trip by exploring the city centre, where historic landmarks, local food and winter scenery make for an easy first day. The main attractions are close enough to combine in one itinerary, with plenty of places to stop for food and photos along the way.

Saint Sophia Cathedral

иконостас
  • Admire the iconic Russian-style architecture
  • Explore Sophia Square and take photos
  • Visit in the evening to see the cathedral illuminated

Zhonyang Street (Central Street)

  • Walk along Harbin's famous pedestrian street
  • Explore European-style buildings, shops and cafes
  • Try local snacks and buy souvenirs

Songhua River

Along the riverbank
  • Enjoy views of the frozen river in winter
  • Try seasonal activities such as ice skating and winter rides
  • Visit around sunset for scenic views

Tips: Wear thermal layers, gloves and warm shoes, as Harbin can be extremely cold in winter. Plan your route around Central Street to reduce walking time in the cold and allow extra time for photo stops.

This hotel is located in the Central Street business district, making it convenient for shopping. It has five floors, but the building is quite old, and in my opinion, it doesn't quite meet a five-diamond standard. First, the pros: The rooms in Block A are spacious and well-renovated. The hotel was proactive in addressing issues, and the service attitude was good. The location is convenient, being just over 500 meters from Central Street and the Songhua River, so it's not too far. Taxis are readily available, and there are plenty of dining options nearby. Now for the cons: The cleanliness wasn't great; I found hair in the corners of the floor after checking in. The facilities also weren't up to par; for example, the hairdryer was broken, and each room seemed to have a different brand of hairdryer. The electric kettle was hot to the touch, and the hot water temperature for showering during the day wasn't high. The restaurant had limited variety, and the food quality was average. There's basically no view from the window. Finally, a major complaint: If you've booked a room in Block B, I'd recommend not staying there. The room decor is cheap, and the view from the window is terrible, mostly power lines. Block B is separated from Block A by a central garden, and the breakfast restaurant is in Block A. Overall, I was satisfied with the hotel and Trip.com's service, as issues were actively coordinated and resolved immediately. However, I was quite dissatisfied with the hotel stay itself. I booked based on Trip.com's five-diamond rating, choosing to trust the platform, but the actual experience was significantly different from a five-diamond standard. I suggest the platform strictly vet hotels to prevent inflated reviews from affecting ratings and misleading consumers. This is a genuine stay and an objective review, hoping to help other consumers and encourage the hotel to improve its hardware facilities and operate based on real quality.

I chose the Grand Mansion 1903 for my trip to Harbin this time, and it exceeded my expectations. The hotel is right next to Central Street, making it incredibly convenient for shopping and dining. St. Sophia Cathedral is also within walking distance. The location truly is a major advantage. The building itself is a century-old Western-style mansion. The crystal chandeliers in the lobby, the carved staircase, and the oil paintings on the walls create a wonderful atmosphere. The most unique feature is the century-old elevator that's still in use; riding it gives you a real sense of history, an experience you won't find in other hotels. The room was meticulously clean. While it looked vintage, it was equipped with modern amenities like a smart toilet, humidifier, and capsule coffee machine. The bedding was comfortable, and I had a great rest after a long day of exploring. The service left a deep impression. I was offered a hot drink upon check-in, my luggage was delivered to my room, and I received a welcome fruit platter. They even gave me a small souvenir upon check-out, which was a thoughtful touch. You can also try on Russian-style costumes for free and take great photos right inside the hotel, no need to specially look for scenic spots outside. The breakfast offered a wide variety, including local specialties and Russian dishes. If you're looking for a unique experience in Harbin, this place is highly recommended. It's not just a trendy photo op; it's genuinely comfortable. I would definitely consider staying here again on my next visit.

This was a last-minute hotel change, and they upgraded me to a river view room. It's an older, quality hotel in a very central location, south of the Songhua River, with a beautiful view. The buffet was excellent, but the security guards at the entrance were a bit disappointing, as they didn't help guests with their luggage.

The hotel was just mediocre. The lobby, though, was quite luxurious and beautiful; at first glance, it seemed a bit upscale. But the actual experience was really just average. The concierge staff (a few older gentlemen) never greeted me (even after staying 5 nights and going in and out dozens of times), but I guess you can't expect too much from an independent domestic brand hotel. What was even funnier was the front desk. I handed him my ID, he typed a few things on the computer, then mysteriously leaned in and whispered that he had upgraded me. I even thanked him, but when I opened the door and walked in, I realized it was just the room type I had originally booked. It even looked smaller than the area described on Trip.com, and the sofa was awkwardly placed diagonally in the corner, making it inconvenient to move around. It's truly laughable; I didn't expect an upgrade, nor did I even ask for one. I never beg for things at the front desk during check-in, so there's no need to mislead people, okay? The second funny point was the strong smell of smoke in the room, especially in the bathroom. The moment I walked in, I smelled a strong smoke odor. But I was so tired from an early flight that day and just wanted to quickly wash up and rest. When I entered the bathroom, the smoke smell was even stronger, making me feel nauseous. At this point, I was just cursing the smokers who insist on lighting up in hotel rooms. But after I finished washing up, I saw a box of matches on the coffee table. Haha, speechless. Even more ridiculous, there was a 'No Smoking' sign on the bedside table. People who hate smoke should definitely avoid booking this hotel. Oh, and the so-called afternoon tea consisted of very cheap pastries, small tomatoes, and apricots of varying sizes and textures, some soft, some hard. Yes, the kind of 'Western pastries' you'd find at a 68-yuan buffet, utterly disgusting. The only drink was a pot of 'hot tea' that was so diluted I couldn't even tell what kind of tea it was. This 'afternoon tea' was simply pathetic; they might as well have given me two bananas. I left after 5 minutes on the first afternoon. The remaining 4 vouchers went straight into the trash. I didn't give the lowest rating because the cleaning lady had a very good attitude; otherwise, it would definitely have been a one-star rating.

Exceeded expectations, highly recommended! Next time I come to Harbin, I'll definitely stay for more nights. Before arriving in Harbin, when booking a hotel, besides location and facilities, my main concern was whether there was a pool for kids. After much deliberation among several star-rated hotels, I finally chose Shangri-La Songbei. It turned out to be the absolute best decision of our Harbin-Yichun trip. The most surprising thing? It has to be the hotel's window view! We gasped the moment we entered the room – it was simply stunning! How could there be such a large window, such a beautiful view of the Songhua River, and such a perfect hotel? This scene made us never want to leave the room; just quietly sitting by the window and enjoying the scenery was enough. Next, let's talk about the hotel's service, which was also top-notch! We had an early flight back to Beijing on our departure day. We had booked a room with breakfast, but since we had to leave by 6 AM, we wouldn't be able to enjoy it. So, when checking in, I asked the front desk if there was a solution. The hotel offered a incredibly thoughtful plan: they prepared simple packed meals for us to take away. When we checked out, I saw three bags for the three of us, and each bag contained three packed containers with fruits, pastries, eggs, sausages, and more – it was so comprehensive! Who wouldn't love such a considerate hotel? Finally, one more thing: there aren't many dining options near the hotel. There's only one dumpling restaurant across the road. We navigated there, walked around for a long time, and just as we were about to give up, we discovered a hidden gem of a restaurant nearby called 'Dufu Smoked & Sauced Dumpling Longjiang Cuisine.' I highly recommend this restaurant too! The dishes are diverse, delicious, and affordably priced. It's truly a treasure! I'm already planning to replicate this experience with Shangri-La Songbei and Dufu Restaurant on my next trip to Harbin – I'm so excited to plan my next Harbin itinerary just for them! 😘

For guests with medical needs, the hotel's proximity to the pulmonary hospital is a huge advantage. Whether it's an emergency requiring immediate attention or accompanying a friend or family member for check-ups and treatments, it saves a significant amount of travel time and cost, making it convenient and efficient. Furthermore, being near a hospital often means there are accompanying medical facilities like pharmacies, making it easier for guests to purchase medications if needed.

The room was very spacious, with a 1.8m king-size bed, a 1.2m single bed, and a chaise lounge. The handsome guy at the front desk contacted us in advance to set up a tent, which added a nice touch to the atmosphere. The facilities were also complete, including a garment steamer, a mini-fridge, and a tea bar. It would have been perfect if the curtains were blackout curtains. We stayed for two nights, and the lady at the front desk was incredibly responsive and spoke softly. She even helped me carry and freeze a 16-pound vacuum-sealed red sausage. Thumbs up to her!

Harbin in summer – you get what you pay for! The day before, I stayed near Central Street; that hotel wasn't cheap but it was small and damp, and had virtually no facilities (not throwing shade, just a comparison)... The next day, I decisively moved to Mercure! Oh my god, I felt completely relaxed and refreshed! Location: It's not far from St. Sophia Church and Central Street. Harbin Museum is right across the street, and it's close to the river, so you can walk to the Flood Control Memorial Tower or the Middle East Railway Bridge – all the must-see spots are within a leisurely stroll. Facilities: The lobby isn't huge, but it's comfortable and well-designed. The room layout is sensible, with a walk-in closet, a bathroom with separate wet and dry areas, electric curtains, and a Dyson hairdryer. The laundry room, gym, and restaurant are all on the 3rd floor. Hygienics: Perfect score. Service: Extremely satisfied. The staff are all very enthusiastic and polite. The front desk receptionists are particularly patient; besides basic check-in services, they patiently chatted with a guest who was constantly talking, engaging in genuine conversation back and forth. Double Lobby Buffet Afternoon Tea: A big plus, very popular with seniors and children. Warm Midnight Snack: Different snacks every day, highly recommended. You pick them up at the front desk based on the number of people in the room. Fingertip Fun, Creative De-stressing Perler Bead Activity: My child was obsessed with Perler beads, so I booked it without hesitation! The only minor issue was that some bead colors were out of stock; it would be best if they could be replenished promptly. Also, the space felt a bit cramped. For a hotel of this caliber, it would be more appealing to guests if they had a separate room for children's activities.

I specifically chose this place for my trip because of its location, and it really delivered! Once I checked in, I found it to be excellent. The surrounding amenities are incredibly complete – there's a convenience store and restaurants right downstairs. Getting around is super easy too; the subway station is just a few minutes' walk away, and it's only about a 10-15 minute taxi ride to various attractions. I stayed for a week and had a fantastic overall experience. Whether it was for daily meals or going out sightseeing, everything was very convenient and stress-free. I'd definitely choose this place again next time! 👍

After an unpleasant experience at my previous hotel, I was really touched by the enthusiastic staff here. They showed me a room and then helped me compare it with another family room, recommending the cheaper and more value-for-money triple family room. The hotel's breakfast is definitely the highlight; the variety is absolutely amazing! It's a fantastic blend of Chinese and Western options, catering to different dietary habits from both northern and southern regions. Staples like noodles, steamed buns, corn, pumpkin, and rice are all available. Western breakfast items like desserts, waffles, small cakes, and bread are also plentiful. Even staying for two days, the selection changed, and the juices, coffee, milk, and soy milk (original, grain) were all so complete! A wonderful Harbin trip starts with a delightful breakfast!

Let's start with the hotel's location: it's a ten-minute walk from Central Street and a five-minute walk from the Songhua River Cableway, making it super convenient for visiting all the major tourist attractions. The 'Red Brick Morning Market' is just five minutes away, and downstairs, you'll find the main branch of 'Chaihuo Laoyuan Iron Pot Stew.' The location is truly excellent. The hotel itself has a unique style, with its own Russian restaurant on the first floor, and accommodations on the second floor and above, giving it a rather chic and distinctive vibe compared to typical hotels. What really stood out was the staff's warmth and friendly attitude. I accidentally left a t-shirt behind, and they contacted me immediately after finding it, then shipped it to Beijing for free. This experience has left me with a wonderful impression of Harbin!

The location is super convenient! A ten-minute walk to the left takes you to Qiulin Company and Fendou Food Store, and another ten minutes gets you to the Provincial Museum. To the right, there are many snack bars and BBQ stalls, and if you keep walking, you'll reach the Church of the Intercession. It's also a short taxi or subway ride to Central Street or the riverside. Out of all the hotels I stayed at during my 10-day trip to Harbin, this one had the most convenient transportation. It seems they host a lot of group bookings, as there were always guests waiting to check in at the front desk every day. So, available rooms might be limited and you should book quickly. The hotel has some pros and cons. The pros: 1. The location of the hotel is superb, Right on the Northern side of zhongyangdajie. 2. The gym is adequate, it has good strength training options. Unfortunately the AC doesn't work in the room itself. 3. The staff was happy to allow us a late checkout. The cons: 1. The entrance to the hotel does not have a ramp to go up with the luggage so one must lift it over the stairs into the lobby. I didn't expect that in a 4 star hotel. 2. I've made a reservation for a non smoking room, away from the elevator but got a room with smoke smell, close to the elevator. The staff showed me 3 more rooms but the first two also had smoke smell. Finally we got a room without smell and far from the elevator. 3. The breakfast, in my humble opinion, was subpar. Not too many western options. 4. The hotel doesn't look clean. The surroundings of the elevator need more work. All in all I was a bit disappointed, considering the price.

I had a unique memory of the 'Ice City' in early September while staying at Oulugoya. The hotel is located on the north bank of the Songhua River, offering a rare sense of tranquility and leisure, away from the hustle and bustle of Central Avenue in Daoli District. The room facilities were complete, the bedding was very comfortable, and the soundproofing was excellent, making for a quiet stay. The 42nd-floor lobby bar and executive lounge offer a 270-degree panoramic view of the river and city, which was a major reason for choosing this hotel. It allowed me to avoid crowds and enjoy the northern sunset in solitude – every photo I took was incredibly therapeutic. The only minor drawbacks were the limited surrounding amenities, with most good restaurants being a 3-5 minute drive away. Also, every time I needed to go up or down, I had to go to the 42nd-floor lobby, and the card sensor for the elevator didn't always work perfectly. However, there was a girl named Shuqi outside the lounge who patiently explained things to guests with great attention to detail. During our conversation, she also introduced me to the hotel's brand philosophy and essence, which indeed aligns perfectly with my travel and vacation needs. Thanks for this time spent with Oulugoya. We'll meet again, just like mountains and rivers do. ^_^

The concierge was also exceptionally warm and meticulous. Noticing we had a child, she proactively offered kids' toothbrushes and slippers. Concerned that the children's slippers might be too small, she thoughtfully provided an extra pair of adult slippers as well – the attention to detail was outstanding. To all my fellow travelers visiting Harbin, you *must* stay here! The service attitude is absolutely fantastic. When checking in, they even contacted my parents to confirm my companion's identity and ask for their consent since I'm a minor – that's some serious responsibility! The water is free, and in the lobby, they have iodine swabs, nail clippers, and all sorts of daily necessities. Plus, lots of foreigners stay here too; I ran into so many Russians, haha. When we checked out, my friend accidentally left something behind, and the front desk actually contacted us about it – what amazing service! It was a truly satisfying stay. The only minor downside is that some water tends to flow out from the shower area, but since it's a wet/dry separation, it's really quite good overall. ❤️ (And no, I'm not an advertorial!)

I randomly picked this hotel online and ended up staying at the Yawangsi Hotel by chance, and I thought it was great. First, the hotel is huge. I only found out upon arrival that it's where the Asian Winter Games athletes stay, so the facilities are top-notch. Second, when we checked in, a group of over 200 people were checking out the day before. They didn't wait for us at all, but the front desk manager felt they had been negligent in welcoming us and apologized profusely. That evening, they even brought us a huge fruit platter, which was a pleasant surprise. Third, after skiing that evening, we went to the restaurant to order dinner, and the manager happened to be there bringing the fruit platter. After leading us to the restaurant, he noticed it was a bit empty and, worried we might be cold, offered to bring our food to our room after we ordered – very thoughtful. Fourth, we ordered a braised pork dish, a stir-fried eggplant, potatoes, and green peppers, and dumplings. The three of us were stuffed, and the food was delicious. At just over 100 yuan, I think it was a great deal for a tourist area. Fifth, the service was very attentive. The supermarket on the first floor is open until 9 PM, and prices are slightly higher than in the city center, which is understandable. The front desk staff offered recommendations and assistance with making connections for various itineraries and activities, but they weren't pushy or overly helpful, which was great. The front desk manager, in particular, was very enthusiastic; I don't even know their name, but you can figure it out yourself if you see this. We came at the end of November, which wasn't peak season, so I don't know what it's like during peak season, but for this time of year, the price and service were excellent value.

Facilities: There's a restaurant on the first floor that offers breakfast. The selection isn't huge, but it's perfectly adequate. The room was spacious and had a large window. There were no strange odors, and the bathroom was a good size with a separate wet and dry area. Ambiance: Clean and tidy, with lively decor. The signature Ibis red makes it feel warm and inviting. Service: The young lady at the front desk had a smile that could melt anyone (and I'm a woman!). She was a major highlight of the hotel – so enthusiastic and empathetic. When she saw my mom and I were sharing a bed, she proactively upgraded us to a twin room, which was also very spacious, and even gave us complimentary egg tarts upon check-in. Her proactive spirit and warm service made our stay truly enjoyable! 😀 Hygiene: The hotel maintained the usual Ibis standard of cleanliness. There was no hair on the room floor, and both the toilet and shower areas were excellent and very spacious.

Five-star review! The hygiene was excellent, and the environment was great. It's super convenient for getting around, very close to the subway. Our check-in experience was fantastic. My friend and I came for a trip and definitely didn't pick the wrong hotel. The bed was really soft, and the room was spacious and bright. There's even an amusement park within the resort, so if you get tired of staying in the hotel, you can go wander around – it's all very interesting. The entire park has a European castle architectural style, which is beautiful and perfect for photos. Plus, all the staff were wonderful, with very friendly service. There's also a shuttle bus within the park, making it easy to get around. The breakfast was incredibly rich and awesome! We even happened to catch a newly opened venue within the park and went to check it out – it was so dreamy and huge, you could even do cosplay! It was amazing. No matter where you went, the staff were always super nice. 👍

The front desk staff were really welcoming and went out of their way to help us with any issues, making us feel right at home. The sour plum soup in the lobby wasn't too sweet and was very refreshing, and the rose tea was also delicious. Our room was clean, and I have to give a special shout-out to the breakfast – even though the area was small, there was a wide variety of dishes and everything tasted great. The only downside is that many rooms don't have windows, but on the flip side, it made them incredibly quiet. It was stormy outside, but I couldn't hear a thing from my room, haha! 😄
