Visas, Entry Rules and Transit for Malaysian Travellers🛂

Good news for Malaysians travelling to China! 🎉 You do not need to apply for a tourist visa for short visits to mainland China if you hold a valid Malaysian ordinary passport. The China–Malaysia mutual visa exemption agreement took effect on 17 July 2025, allowing Malaysians to enter China visa-free for tourism, business, family visits, exchange visits, and transit purposes.

How long can Malaysians stay in China without a visa?

Malaysian travellers can stay:

Up to 30 days per entry
✅ Maximum cumulative stay of 90 days within any 180-day period

Entry requirements for Malaysians 🇲🇾➡️🇨🇳

Even though no visa is required, you should prepare:

✅ Malaysian passport valid for travel
✅ Return/onward flight ticket (recommended)
✅ Hotel booking details (recommended)
✅ Proof of travel purpose if requested by immigration officers

Your passport should be in good condition, and your personal details must match your flight booking.

Do Malaysians need to fill in an arrival card?

Yes. Travellers should check the latest China immigration requirements before departure, including any digital arrival declaration procedures that may apply at the time of travel.

What about transit through China?

For Malaysians transiting through China:

  • Short transit stays may fall under China’s transit policies depending on the airport, route, nationality, and onward destination.
  • If you are simply travelling Malaysia → Shanghai → another country, check whether you qualify for a transit exemption.
  • If Shanghai is your final destination (for example, a Shanghai–Beijing holiday), you enter China under the normal visa-free entry arrangement.

Important tips for Malaysian travellers 💡

Although China travel is now much easier, remember:

📌 Visa-free does not mean unlimited stay
📌 Overstaying the allowed period can result in penalties
📌 Work, study, or long-term residence usually requires the appropriate visa or permit
📌 Always check the latest announcements before departure, as entry rules can change

For a Shanghai to Beijing trip, Malaysians can now enjoy a much simpler travel experience — no visa application, no embassy visit, and more time to focus on planning your food, sightseeing, and high-speed rail journey. 🚄🍵

Staying at the Legendale Hotel with my children was an exceptionally pleasant experience. The location is excellent, making it very convenient for getting around and sightseeing. The hotel's European-style decor is grand and appealing, the environment is quiet and clean, and the room hygiene is impeccable. The beds were soft and comfortable. The front desk and service staff were all gentle and thoughtful, paying attention to small details. Overall, it felt luxurious yet welcoming. This stay was wonderful, and I'll definitely choose this hotel again next time I'm in Beijing.

Overall, I was very satisfied with my stay. The hotel was easy to find and conveniently located for getting around. The environment was elegantly retro, and the facilities were all-encompassing. The room was cleaned spotlessly, free of any odors, and the mattress was just right—neither too soft nor too hard—ensuring a great night's sleep. The front desk staff, Blair and Yonah, provided attentive service and promptly helped resolve any issues. It's suitable for both business trips and leisure travel. I highly recommend staying here.

Upon checking in, Miss Zoe at the front desk was incredibly enthusiastic. When I asked about upgrading my room type, she immediately and proactively helped me check and change it, quickly finding me a room with a better view. She was patient and polite throughout our conversation, very efficient, and took the initiative to explain the hotel facilities. Her attention to detail showed thoughtful service, and she was serious and responsible in addressing guest needs. She's an excellent front desk staff member! 👍

The environment is beautiful, although the swimming pool is a bit small. But it wasn't crowded, which was nice. The room was also very new, and the kids loved it. The bed was large, a 2.2m bed, and very comfortable to sleep in. It rained at night so we didn't go out and instead had the seafood buffet. We even got to scoop our own seafood, which the kids found fun and unique. For the seafood buffet, my child even said that the chocolate and ice cream cake, which came out last around 8 PM, were the best things they ate. The concierge was very thoughtful, helping to receive a delivery, even unpacking it and bringing it up, and also helping with luggage. Getting a taxi to Wangfujing took only 15 minutes, which was very convenient.

Cleanliness: The room was very clean. Amenities: They have an air purifier and a bathtub where you can enjoy a bath with a city view. At night, you can also watch movies as there are many free films available on the TV. Service: I booked a week in advance and requested a high-floor room with the front desk. When I checked in early, there wasn't an available room yet, so I left my luggage there. When I checked in later that afternoon, the front desk provided service with a smile throughout. We were three people, and I had booked two breakfasts, but the front desk kindly gave us an extra one. Surroundings: It's about a seven-minute walk from Sanyuanqiao Metro Station, so transportation is convenient. Due to a tight schedule, I didn't have time to take photos.

Our long-awaited summer family trip to Beijing, with the New Otani Hotel as our base, turned out to be a relaxed and enjoyable journey. Located in the heart of Chongwenmen, the hotel boasts an excellent prime location. This historic hotel, having weathered the years, has shed its extravagance to offer a truly solid and comfortable stay. The rooms are clean and bright, with good soundproofing, allowing us to rest peacefully at night after days of sightseeing. The girls at the front desk were exceptionally polite; seeing that we were traveling with children and seniors, they thoughtfully upgraded our room – another pleasant surprise during our trip. The staff were patient and attentive, striking just the right balance. The concierge service for luggage storage was convenient, and food delivery to the room was quick and easy, with Mr. Guan Longhai providing meticulous service. The housekeeping staff, Xiao Rui and Sister Haiyan, were also kind-hearted and down-to-earth. Checkout was swift; simply handing the room card to the front desk staff was all that was needed. We'll definitely bring our child to stay here again on our next visit to Beijing.

The room was tiny, I mean, really tiny. There was no space for luggage; if you put it on the floor, you couldn't walk. I originally booked a windowless room, and they said they upgraded me to one with a window, but it faced a wall about 50 centimeters away. So, open or closed, it was dark, and if you opened it, all you heard was the buzzing of the AC unit outside, so it was better to keep it shut. The breakfast was good, and the location was decent. I don't understand why hotel ratings are always so high nowadays. It's because after you book, the front desk chases you for a 5-star review. This practice really needs to be addressed.

I put my parents in a separate room at this hotel and they were upgraded when we checked in, which was very kind of the staff. Their room had a more classic feel compared to ours, but it was clean, quiet and the beds were comfortable. They appreciated the free mini bar (sodas and water) and the convenient location. Service was consistently good. Breakfast wasn’t anything special and could be better, but it was sufficient. Their AC turned off once in the middle of the night but they fixed it. Overall my parents were happy with the stay and the hotel treated us well.

This is my second time staying at Peace Hotel, first time was in 2017. This time we stayed at the newer West Wing. We initially had only planned to stay one night but decided to extend our stay and stayed 5 nights this visit. The hotel gave us a voucher for complimentary art workshop. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and so did my nieces. Location of the hotel is perfect, within walking distance to few subway stations and just one block away from downtown commercial shopping. Staff are friendly, great breakfast selection, rooms are, clean and spacious. The housekeeping staff are very polite and friendly, they are constantly maintaining the cleanliness and tidyness of the space. We did not get a chance to use the pool, as the day goes by it gets pretty busy with kids, swimming cap is mandatory and can be purchased from the gym trainers. The laundry room was convenient (3 washer, 3 dryer), detergent supplied, but the dryer takes a long time to fully dry so we ended up airing our clothes in our suite. If I return to Beijing again in the future, I will definitely book this hotel again.

The apex of Beijing, where the true heart of luxury beats! — A perfect stay at Kerry Hotel Beijing from July 25th-26th If Beijing is a flowing feast, then the Guomao CBD is its most dazzling stage, and Kerry Hotel Beijing sits right in the center of it. During this stay, I truly experienced what it means to “be amidst the bustle, yet privately enjoy luxury.” Arriving on the afternoon of the 25th, from the moment I stepped into the lobby, that grand sense of tranquility isolated me from the noise outside the window. The room was super spacious, and the floor-to-ceiling window offered an unparalleled city skyline view, with the CCTV Headquarters (the 'big trousers') and China Zun tower side-by-side. That feeling of having the imperial capital at your feet instantly made the room rate worthwhile! I must particularly praise the Kerry Club Lounge on the 18th floor! It was truly the highlight of my entire stay! The service from Ms. Lucy, Clara, and Seanna was simply delightful, making me feel incredibly welcome. The lounge's food, whether afternoon tea or evening happy hour, offered such a vast variety that it was hard to choose. The breakfast at 'Jia Pin Restaurant' on the morning of the 26th absolutely won me over—there were 7 ways to prepare eggs alone, plus fresh grapefruit. These kinds of details are truly a huge plus! Although I know this hotel is a representative of the 'old money' opened in 1999, the facilities are incredibly well-maintained. That sense of profound grandeur, refined by the passage of time, is a quality new hotels simply cannot replicate. The gym and heated swimming pool are top-tier for hotels in China, with huge spaces and comprehensive equipment. Even just a swim feels like a luxury. My two-day journey in the heart of luxury left me wanting more. Not only is the location unbeatable, but the service and dining are also exceptional! This is definitely the most 'aristocratic' hotel I've stayed at in Beijing, second to none! ♥️

This was my first time staying at the Park Plaza. We came because my child had an exam at the Academy of Arts and Design's attached high school. When we arrived, I didn't even realize there was a hotel next door. What drew us in was the parking lot we spotted as we drove by, and it was indeed very close to the school. The security guard at the entrance confirmed there was plenty of parking, and we were impressed to find both above-ground and underground spaces. So, we decided to book a room. The price was reasonable, not expensive at all, and the hotel had everything: a restaurant, breakfast, and a gym. Stepping into the lobby, it was bright, and a pleasant aroma filled the air, immediately giving us a holiday vibe and easing our nerves. The young lady at the front desk was incredibly warm and thorough during check-in. She double-checked our late checkout request multiple times to ensure it was fine. Knowing we were there for our child's exam, she even extended our checkout to 3 PM, which was a very rare and thoughtful gesture. Despite many students and parents checking in, it never felt crowded. The elevators were fast, room service was prompt, and the little robot delivering items was adorable and busy. The room itself was spacious and clean. The first night, the hot water in the bathroom wasn't very hot, possibly due to a high number of guests, but the bathtub was very comfortable, and the bedding was cozy. There was a slight creak when turning over, but it was acceptable. Staff were quick to respond to any extra requests. Parking was free after registering at the front desk. Overall, the value for money is good. I recommend it to anyone who needs a place to stay.

I've lost count of how many times I've stayed at NUO Hotel Beijing. We've been coming here every time we visit Beijing since my child was very young! This time, the front desk staff, Mina, upgraded our room and gave us complimentary executive breakfast on the 25th floor, which was much appreciated! The breakfast selection was small but exquisite, and the service was excellent. There are many kid-friendly attractions around NUO Hotel, and the pool is also very clean. Among hotels in Beijing at a similar price point, the location and value for money are top-notch. We booked a twin room this time, and they combined the beds into a super-king, just like at Universal NUO – a big thumbs up! One minor thing: the walls in room 2023 were a little dirty. The hotel boasts an excellent location: Xintiandi, the largest Starbucks, the Bund, and Jiefangbei are all within walking distance. The sheer scale and beauty of the lobby are immediately impressive. The breakfast spread was superb – truly enjoyable with something for everyone. The rooms are spotless and well-maintained, though the interior design feels a bit dated (for instance, it took some time to figure out how to switch the water from the faucet to the shower). My friend was only staying in Shanghai for a day, so naturally, I wanted to give her an itinerary that offered both 'old-world charm and new-age chic.' While passing Nanjing West Road recently, this InterContinental 'Luxury Collection' hotel immediately caught my eye. And just as I expected, critical as she is, she complimented my taste the moment she walked in. Its most appealing features are its convenient location and its ability to be a tranquil oasis amidst the bustle: step outside, and you're on the vibrant Nanjing Road; turn around, and you're in the quiet serenity of a residential area. My friend said the elevator decor instantly made her feel like she'd 'traveled through time,' and that unique 'Haitian style' evoked long-lost memories of Shanghai. She had originally come to sightsee but happily spent most of her day lingering at the hotel. What she loved most were the terrace and the restaurant. On a summer evening, the breeze felt just like those childhood nights spent cooling off in the alleyways – she used to live in a Shikumen house. She remarked, 'If only I could lie in a wicker chair, fan myself with a palm-leaf fan, eat watermelon, and watch an outdoor movie, that would be truly divine.' She also adored the red hanging ornament in the lobby; it was vibrantly bright, yet its glass texture gave it a lively feel, much like Shanghai's character – passionate yet steady, with a touch of lightness within its composure. The food did not disappoint either. I pushed her to try the Shiqipu Noodle Restaurant, where the owner asked in Shanghainese, 'Mi dao ai hao fa?' (Is the taste good?), and she smiled and replied, 'Authentic,' instantly tearing up. She specifically bought the sweet variety of butterfly pastries from the International Hotel – saying 'only sweet is truly Shanghai.' Her only regret was: having stayed in too many foreign-style grand hotels, this time, with Shanghai elements everywhere and Shanghai flavors in every bite, it was 'just missing the sound of Shanghai.' Perhaps the cicada chirps in the alleyways and the hawkers' cries from the Shikumen are the hometown sounds she truly yearns to hear. However, she has already declared: the next time she returns, this will be her chosen hotel, and she plans to visit all the routes I arranged. I believe the charm of Shanghai has never been in its superficial glamour but in its ability to always find the most fitting way to blend East and West, ancient and modern, living as a unique 'Haipai' (Shanghai style). This is also the root that every Shanghainese person cherishes. Below are the three half-day itinerary options I created for her, which I've also compiled here, hoping they might help someone else: Option 1 · A Stroll Through Old Shanghai Charm Start from the hotel's main entrance on Fengyang Road and turn into Huanghe Road. The Changjiang Building and Changjiang Theater were the last residences of Eileen Chang; Huanghe Road is the origin of 'Blossoms Shanghai' (Fan Hua). The International Hotel is where her mother and aunt once stayed; next to it, the Sports Museum is rumored to be where Eileen Chang used to study. Diagonally opposite is the History Museum (formerly the Racecourse); the East Wing houses the old bronze lions from the HSBC Building on the Bund, and the 'Echoes of Shanghai' exhibition in the West Wing happens to talk about the past of Fengyang Road. The ornate windows of the West Wing and the Changjiang Building, mirroring the hotel's architecture, perfectly showcase the most fashionable Art Deco style of the 1930s. Option 2 · Tracing Red Memories Walk along Chengdu North Road to the Secretariat of the China Labor Movement, to see how Shanghai workers united into a revolutionary force; then visit the former site of the Songpu Special Committee. Go to the Sihang Warehouse to hear the echoes of the Battle of Shanghai and see the bullet-riddled walls recount the tragedy of that year. At night, turn into Xiang Kang Li on Xinchang Road to find the former site of the CCP Central Committee's secret printing press; on Nanjing West Road, there is also the former site of the Soviet Liaison Office, where, amidst the flickering lights, memories of the past reside. Option 3 · Modern and Retro Collision The LV 'Big Boat' on Nanjing West Road is currently a popular spot for photos; after visiting, turn into Wujiang Road for shopping and dining, and further ahead is Zhangyuan Shikumen – where new trends emerge in old alleyways, perfect for capturing stunning photos. Food Tips · The hotel restaurant's afternoon tea set is exquisite and picture-perfect. · Shiqipu Noodle Restaurant (the owner's Shanghainese is a living signboard). · Deda Western Restaurant and Gongdelin Noodle Restaurant, each with its own charm. · Donghai Small Restaurant (authentic Ningbo cuisine). · Chongming cuisine on the second floor of the hotel, authentic local flavors. · International Hotel butterfly pastries, remember to choose the sweet ones. Though the day was short, the essence of Shanghai will give her much to savor. When she returns next time, we'll continue our journey.

The hotel is good, and getting around is convenient. The room is a bit small, but perfectly adequate. The main advantage is its excellent location for exploring. It's easy to find from Exit 7 of Yuyuan Metro Station, and very close to Yuyuan Garden and Chenghuang Temple. The Bund is just a ten-minute walk away. The only downside is the lack of a dedicated concierge service. When picking up stored luggage, there's no one specifically assigned to it, so you have to wait until someone finishes checking in other guests. I hope they can improve this, or perhaps the front desk could contact someone else to retrieve luggage, as the waiting time can be quite long. The front desk is on the 7th floor, and the elevator is also slow. Breakfast is just okay; it's better to order delivery. The Dahuchun shengjian (pan-fried buns) are good and delivered quickly.

We were on a road trip and stayed in Shanghai for two days. Parking was convenient with plenty of spots available. We spent one day exploring on foot and the other at Disneyland. The room was clean and hygienic, and the breakfast was delicious, especially the Western pastries which tasted very authentic. We signed up for a Marriott membership, which allowed one child to eat breakfast for free. The hotel is also very close to the Bund, Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street, and the Sihang Warehouse.

The hotel is well-located, right in the middle of the pedestrian street. We stayed in a standard room, but after our flight was canceled due to a typhoon, we extended our stay for another day and were moved to an upgraded room. The room was fantastic, we were probably lucky. It had two rooms: a living room with a sofa and a magnificent view of the pedestrian street. Besides a tea set, there was also a coffee machine. There was also a large, separate bathroom. It's an ideal option for a family with a child. The breakfasts are very good, with options for both children and adults. The only thing I didn't notice was an omelet station; there were fried eggs and scrambled eggs instead. But you won't go hungry; a delicious and hearty breakfast is guaranteed.

The hotel was exceptionally clean and tidy. It was recommended by my foreign colleagues for my business trip to Shanghai. The surrounding area is bustling, located in the core business district of Jing'an Temple, making it very convenient for subway travel, shopping, and sightseeing. The bedding in the room was soft and comfortable, and the soundproofing was excellent, ensuring a good night's rest for my business trip. I happened to be there during a typhoon with heavy rain in Shanghai, and I particularly appreciate the doorman who promptly helped with my luggage. The front desk and room service were professional and attentive. The executive lounge experience was outstanding, with excellent food. From the room window, I could enjoy panoramic views of the beautiful surroundings.

Decent stay, but several misses for a 5-star property My stay at the Pullman Shanghai Central was a mixed bag—nice in some areas, but disappointing in others. Check-in: The staff were very friendly and welcoming on our first day. However, I was surprised that they wouldn't let me check in until 3:00 PM. At most other hotels, I'm usually able to get an early check-in (even if I arrive at noon), so this felt a bit rigid for a property of this level. The Room: The room itself was comfortable—the bed was soft and the shower pressure was actually perfect (not too strong, not too weak, just right). Unfortunately, the room smelled strongly of cigarette smoke upon arrival. To their credit, when I called the front desk, they immediately offered to change my room, which was very professional of them. Breakfast: This was the biggest letdown. The breakfast buffet felt more like what you'd expect from a 3-star hotel rather than a 5-star Pullman. The quality and selection just weren't there for me. Overall: It was an okay stay—nothing terrible, but nothing exceptional either. I wouldn't rate it a 10/10, more like a solid 6. Good service from the staff, but the check-in policy, smoke issue, and food really held it back.

The hotel's location is excellent, making it very convenient for getting around. My room was upgraded, and the facilities are comprehensive, making it perfect for business trips. The welcome fruit was especially good, with a rich variety – 5 or 6 different kinds, I forgot to take a picture. It might be fruit season in autumn, they put a lot of thought into it. I also want to thank Ella at the front desk; her work was meticulous, and her service was professional, which left a great impression.

Our stay was incredibly pleasant, and I have to give a special shout-out to Jessica at the front desk! She was warm and attentive, handled the check-in process efficiently, and patiently answered all our questions about the room type and surrounding amenities. Her demeanor was gentle and professional, and her service throughout was meticulous and thoughtful. Any requests we had were met promptly, making us feel welcomed and comfortable from the moment we arrived. Her professional service significantly enhanced our overall stay. Many thanks to Jessica for her dedicated effort; I'll definitely be recommending this place to my friends.

This is my second time at the Ritz-Carlton Pudong, and the facilities are, as expected, top-notch. Since I have a flight to the UK in two days, I decided to spend both days fully enjoying the hotel experience. The concierge team thoughtfully prepared extra bottled water for me in advance, and also gifted me a little lion charm and a personalized room key. The handwritten card was a truly warm and sincere touch, showing they remembered details I had mentioned, and they even helped me with restaurant reservations. I also took the opportunity to experience the Ritz-Carlton spa. While the price might be a bit higher, the quality of service and the staff's attitude are absolutely impeccable.

Fantastic stay in this hotel with spectacular view! The unique cliff view is definitely worth every penny! We have chosen a room with direct view to the waterfall. As our stay was on a Friday, the waterfall was not available which is bit to our disappointment. But waking up this morning (Sat), the waterfall is on. So nice! And so lucky we can catch the chance to take some more photos! At night, there is a lighting show in the open cliff area. So we taken our dinner out the balcony to enjoy the light show. Nice activity at night! The service of this hotel tops all experiences with hotels. When I checked in, the staff asked if can add my WeChat account for instant customer service purposes. Then I received tips for the nearby travel spots, dining assistance, caring services such as asking me if needs to take my food delivery up to the room for me and asking if I need another taller pillow etc. The complementary fruit platter and dessert and some freebie at time of checkout are indeed a bonus surprise.

Every stay at Pagoda Hotel Wujiaochang has been a great experience. The location is superb, right in the Wujiaochang business district. It's within walking distance to Hopson One and Wanda Plaza, which is incredibly convenient, and also very close to Fudan University campus. The front desk staff are very welcoming, and both check-in and check-out are handled very efficiently. The room layout is well-designed, and cleanliness is excellent. The bedding is very comfortable, with just the right balance of softness and firmness. The smart room control system is very convenient, and the bathroom has a great wet/dry separation. The toiletries also have a pleasant scent. The breakfast offers a wide variety of options and tastes good. Overall, it offers great value for money, and I will definitely choose to stay here again!

The Jiayu Hotel is right next to Jiaxuan, essentially two types of accommodations under one brand. Jiayu is more like an apartment-style hotel, which is a great option if you're traveling with children or elderly family members. You can choose a suite with a kitchen, complete with an induction cooktop, range hood, and dishwasher.

The location is unbeatable. It's super convenient – just take the escalator up to the second floor from the Purple Vine Road metro station exit towards MixC, and you'll see the hotel. It would be even better if there was a convenience store nearby. The hotel environment is also excellent, with large floor-to-ceiling windows that provide amazing natural light in the morning. The room itself is very tidy. The only downside is that the hallway decor is a bit peculiar, especially the wallpaper – it actually startled me the first time I stayed here. Overall, it's great value for money, and I'll likely stay here again next year when I come to Shanghai.
