China Train Transfer Guide: Same-Station vs Different-Station Transfers

Gambar Profil Penulis

Planning two or more train journeys in China? 🚄 The most important thing is to compare the full station names on both tickets.

Do not check only the city.

If your first train arrives at Shanghai Hongqiao but the next train leaves from Shanghai Railway Station, that is a cross-station transfer. You need to leave the station and travel across the city.

If both tickets show the exact same station, an internal Transfer / 换乘 route may be available. But this is not guaranteed at every station or at every time.

For Malaysian travellers, there is one more thing to remember: keep the original Malaysian passport used for booking with you. Foreign passport users should also allow extra time in case a staffed identity-check or ticket gate is needed. Foreign passports are accepted for China Railway bookings.

Here is the quick version. 👇

Transfer type

How to identify it

What you usually do

Main risk

Same station, internal transfer available

Arrival and departure station names are identical

Follow Transfer / 换乘 signs to the waiting area

Wrong turn, closed transfer route, passport check

Same station, but no internal transfer available

Station names are identical, but staff direct you outside

Exit, re-enter, pass security and ticket checks

Underestimating the extra time

Different stations in the same city

Arrival and departure station names are different

Exit, take metro/taxi/transfer, enter the new station

Cross-border or special station

Journey involves immigration or a border process

Follow the specific cross-border procedure

12306 officially defines a connecting journey as multiple train tickets where one segment arrives at either the same railway station or another passenger railway station in the same city as the next segment departs from. That does not mean every connection is equally easy or safe.

Same Station or Different Station? Check This Before You Book 🔍

Trip.com China Train vs 12306 - Which Should You Use?

This is the first thing to check when planning a China train transfer.

Look at:

Train 1 arrival station → Train 2 departure station

Compare the complete names.

For example:

  • Beijing South ≠ Beijing West
  • Shanghai Hongqiao ≠ Shanghai Railway Station
  • Guangzhou South ≠ Guangzhou East

The city may be the same.

The station is not.

This matters because a different station means you need to:

  1. Leave the first station.
  2. Find city transport.
  3. Travel to the second station.
  4. Find the correct entrance.
  5. Pass security again.
  6. Complete identity or ticket checks.
  7. Reach the correct waiting area.
  8. Board the next train.

Suddenly, a connection that looked comfortable on the booking screen can feel very tight. 😅

12306 recognises both same-station and same-city station connections within its definition of connecting tickets. But this should not be read as a railway guarantee that a very short connection will work.

Don’t assume “available to book” means “easy to connect”

This is especially important when buying China multi-city train tickets separately.

A booking platform may show:

Train A arrives at 14:00.
Train B leaves at 14:40.

But that information alone does not tell you:

  • How large the station is
  • Where your arrival platform is
  • Whether an internal transfer route is open
  • Whether you need a staffed passport check
  • Whether you have large luggage
  • Whether you are travelling with children or elderly parents

Treat the connection as a real journey.

Not just two times on a screen.

How to Transfer Trains at the Same Station 🚄➡️🚄

A China train transfer at the same station can be quite straightforward.

The key is not to automatically follow everyone towards the exit.

After getting off your first train:

  1. Check the name of your next train.
  2. Look for Transfer, 换乘 or 便捷换乘 signs.
  3. Follow the designated transfer route.
  4. Keep your next booking and passport ready.
  5. Complete any required ticket or identity check.
  6. Go to the waiting area.
  7. Check the departure board for your next gate.
  8. Join the boarding queue when your train opens for boarding.

The exact route varies by station.

Some transfer routes may take you from the platform back to a waiting level. Others may involve stairs, escalators or lifts.

Do not assume every Chinese railway station has the same layout.

What if you cannot find the Transfer sign? 🧐

Do not wander through restricted gates.

Do not try to walk backwards through an exit barrier either.

Find a uniformed railway employee.

Show them:

  • Your passport
  • Your next train number
  • Your booking confirmation

You can also show:

换乘
Huànchéng — Transfer

This is usually much easier than trying random corridors.

What if you accidentally exit?

It is not necessarily a disaster.

But you will normally need to enter through the public entrance again.

That means another round of:

Entrance → security → identity verification → waiting area → boarding gate

All passengers and their belongings entering a railway station are subject to security screening under China Railway rules.

So if you have a short connection, avoiding an unnecessary exit can save useful time.

Do You Need to Exit and Go Through Security Again? 🛂

The answer depends on your transfer.

Situation 1: Same station + internal transfer route available

You may be able to stay inside the station and follow the internal connection route.

In this case, you may not need to return to the station’s public entrance.

However, the exact transfer route and any additional checks depend on the station.

Do not assume “same station” automatically means “no security or verification.”

Situation 2: Same station + you must exit

If the internal route is unavailable, closed or staff direct you outside, you need to re-enter.

When you enter again, you and your luggage must pass the station security process. China Railway states that passengers and their carried items must undergo security inspection before entering for travel.

Situation 3: Different station

You definitely need to leave.

Then travel to the next station and enter it as a new departure.

That includes security and ticket/identity checks.

What about Malaysian passports? 🇲🇾

China Railway accepts foreign passports for online booking.

Bring the same original passport used for your ticket.

12306 lists certain machine-readable identity documents for automatic gates. Ordinary foreign passports are not included in that standard self-service list. Malaysian travellers should therefore be prepared to use a staffed verification or ticket channel when required.

That does not mean every foreign traveller will experience exactly the same gate process at every station.

It simply means you should not plan a five-minute connection based on the assumption that every automatic gate will recognise your passport instantly.

How to Transfer Between Different Train Stations 🚕🚇

A China train transfer between different stations needs much more planning.

Think of it as two journeys:

Train station → city transfer → train station

After the first train arrives:

  1. Get off the train.
  2. Follow Exit / 出站 signs.
  3. Complete the exit process.
  4. Confirm the Chinese name of your next station.
  5. Choose your city transport.
  6. Travel to the second station.
  7. Find the correct railway entrance.
  8. Pass security.
  9. Complete identity verification.
  10. Find your waiting area and boarding gate.

Metro or taxi?

Both can work.

It depends on your family and luggage.

Transport

Advantages

Disadvantages

Metro 🚇

Usually less affected by road traffic

Stairs, walking, transfers and luggage can be tiring

Taxi / ride-hailing 🚕

Easier with children or large bags

Traffic can be unpredictable

Private transfer 🚐

Convenient for groups and large luggage

Usually more expensive

Do not use the map’s driving time as your transfer time

This is a common mistake.

If your map says:

“Taxi: 35 minutes”

Your connection does not take 35 minutes.

Your actual transfer looks more like:

Arrival platform → station exit → taxi pickup → road journey → drop-off → station entrance → security → passport check → waiting area → boarding gate

That is the time you need to plan.

A better cross-station calculation

Use this template:

Platform to station exit

  • Walking / waiting for transport
  • City transport
  • Finding the new station entrance
  • Security queue
  • Passport / ticket verification
  • Walking to the waiting area
  • Buffer before boarding closes

That gives you a much more realistic picture.

Travelling with children or older parents?

Add more buffer.

Toilet stops happen.

Lifts may be farther away than escalators.

Someone may walk slowly.

A toddler may suddenly decide that the middle of Shanghai Hongqiao is the perfect place to refuse all movement. 😂

Build the connection around your actual group.

How Much Transfer Time Should You Allow? ⏰

There is no single nationwide minimum connection time that works for every China railway station.

A small station and a giant hub are completely different.

A same-platform-style transfer and a cross-city transfer are completely different.

So instead of asking:

“Is X minutes enough?”

Ask:

“What can slow this particular connection down?”

China Railway itself advises passengers to leave sufficient time because queues may occur at security, real-name verification and ticket gates. Stations also stop ticket checking before the train’s scheduled departure time, with the exact timing communicated by the station.

Scheduled arrival is not the same as “ready to transfer”

Your first train may be scheduled to arrive at 15:00.

That does not mean that at exactly 15:00 you are already standing beside the next boarding gate.

You still need to:

  • Get off the train
  • Walk along the platform
  • Find signs
  • Use stairs or lifts
  • Reach the transfer area

Plan for the physical journey.

A simple rule for cross-station connections

If your connection only works when:

  • The first train is perfectly on time
  • You exit immediately
  • A taxi appears instantly
  • There is no traffic
  • Security has no queue
  • You never take a wrong turn

…it is probably not a good connection to book. ⚠️

Choose the later train.

A slightly longer coffee break is much nicer than sprinting through a railway station with a suitcase.

How to Book Multi-Leg China Train Tickets 🎫

When booking several rail journeys, check each segment separately.

For every ticket, verify:

  • Travel date
  • Train number
  • Departure station
  • Arrival station
  • Departure time
  • Arrival time
  • Passenger name
  • Passport number
  • Seat class

Foreign passports are accepted on 12306. Passenger details should be entered accurately using the traveller’s valid identification document.

Keep the passport details consistent

If you are travelling on a Malaysian passport, use that passport consistently for booking and travel.

Keep the original with you.

Do not bury it inside a checked suitcase or large luggage case during a transfer.

Connected journey vs separately purchased tickets

12306 recognises connecting tickets as multiple ticket segments where the transfer stations are the same station or railway passenger stations in the same city.

But do not interpret this as:

“The second train will automatically wait for me.”

It will not necessarily do so.

And do not assume two independently booked tickets have the same protection as a single through-ticket on an airline.

If your first train is late, contact railway staff immediately.

Travelling With Luggage During a Train Transfer 🧳

Luggage changes everything.

Walking ten minutes with a backpack is easy.

Walking ten minutes with:

  • Two 28-inch suitcases
  • A cabin bag
  • A stroller
  • A sleepy five-year-old

…is a different sport entirely. 😆

Keep these items in a small personal bag

During a transfer, keep these easy to reach:

  • 🛂 Passport
  • 📱 Phone
  • 🔋 Power bank
  • 🎫 Next train booking
  • 💳 Wallet
  • 🏨 Hotel information
  • 🚕 Driver or transfer contact

Do not put your passport at the bottom of your largest suitcase.

You may need it during identity verification.

Higher

Cross-station taxi with several bags

Check vehicle space.

A normal car may be fine for two travellers and two bags.

A family of five with four large suitcases may need a larger vehicle.

Plan this before arriving.

Metro with large luggage

The metro may avoid traffic.

But you may face:

  • Long walks
  • Station transfers
  • Lifts located away from the shortest route
  • Busy trains
  • Crowded platforms

Choose based on the whole journey.

Not just the fastest number shown in an app.

What to Do If You Miss Your Connecting Train 😰

First:

Do not panic and do not start randomly cancelling tickets.

Your next action depends on whether the second train has already departed.

If the next train has NOT departed

Act immediately.

Check whether you can reach the boarding gate.

If not, contact:

  • Railway station staff
  • A staffed ticket counter
  • 12306 support or the official booking channel

Ask whether the ticket can be changed to a later train.

Ticket changes depend on available seats. 12306 states that a passenger ticket can generally be changed once.

If the train HAS already departed

You may still have options.

Under the current 12306 rules, after a train departs, a ticket may generally be changed before 24:00 on that day. A same-day replacement train may be changed without a change fee, subject to availability. A later-date train within the applicable sales period may also be possible, but a change fee can apply.

This is very useful.

But it is not a guarantee of a seat.

If every later train is sold out, you cannot simply create inventory by asking for a change.

What if your first train was delayed?

Keep:

  • Both bookings
  • Your passport
  • First train details
  • Actual arrival information

Then speak to railway staff as soon as possible.

China Railway rules provide special arrangements when a passenger cannot travel as ticketed due to railway responsibility or certain exceptional events. However, how this applies to your specific onward booking depends on the ticket situation and railway handling. Do not assume a separately booked onward seat is automatically guaranteed.

Do not make unnecessary changes first

If you are unsure what has happened, talk to staff before repeatedly:

  • Cancelling
  • Refunding
  • Changing
  • Buying duplicate tickets

A ticket can generally only be changed once.

You do not want to use that option accidentally.

China Train Transfer Checklist and Common Mistakes ✅

Screenshot this before travelling.

Before booking

Before travel

During the transfer

Common mistake 1: Checking the city, not the station

“Shanghai” is not enough.

Check the full station name.

Common mistake 2: Treating Google Maps travel time as total transfer time

A 30-minute drive does not mean a 30-minute railway connection.

Add exit, waiting, security and walking time.

Common mistake 3: Automatically following everyone out

If you have a same-station connection, look for the transfer route before leaving.

Common mistake 4: Keeping your passport inside the big suitcase

Keep it accessible.

You may need it for manual verification.

Common mistake 5: Assuming the second train will wait

Do not plan around this.

Common mistake 6: Planning holiday travel like a quiet weekday

Queues can change dramatically.

Leave more buffer during busy periods.

Conclusion: Book the Connection, Not Just the Two Trains 🚄

A good China train transfer guide comes down to one simple habit:

Check the full station names first.

Then calculate the real journey between the two trains. Include walking, security, passport checks, luggage and city transport.

A same-station connection may offer an internal transfer route, but it is not guaranteed. A different-station connection needs much more buffer.

When searching for multi-leg China train tickets, choose a connection that still works when real life happens. A little extra waiting time is usually much better than watching your next train leave without you. 😅
