"The food and bar is good"

"We met with a friend to spend time in Catemaco. The rooms were clean and spacious, with AC but with no view whatsoever as the window is a slit at the top of the wall. The hotel was a reasonable walk from the main square which was good as we could work up an appetite for breakfast, lunch and dinner and just across the road from the lake, although you could use the hotel restaurant. There's a small pool which was lovely to relax by, but could be noisy if children were using it. There was a nice place for breakfast beyond the cathedral and a nice place for dinner overlooking the cathedral. With friends staying at Hotel La Finca, we took a boat excursion from there to Reserva Ecologica across the lake. It was extremely good value - we saw spider monkeys, heard howler monkeys, heard and saw exotic birds, plants, crocodiles and turtles. Make sure you take bug spray and cover up! We were attacked and stung badly by a swarm of bees which I understand was not a regular event but brought an abrupt end to the tour. There's lots of stalls along the lakeside and the trees above are full of nesting egrets, vultures and other birds. Take care as the smell is awful on a hot day and there's lots of poop! Park under the trees at your own risk. It's fascinating!"
