Location and History: Why Chengdu's Attractions Are Unique

Chengdu Attractions

The city is perfectly situated in the heart of the fertile Sichuan Basin in southwestern China. Travel logistics for Russian tourists have become incredibly convenient: Sichuan Airlines operates regular direct flights from Moscow to Chengdu Tianfu Airport—about 8 flights per week (with a flight time of around 8 hours). This makes it easy to get up close with the pandas without any tiresome layovers. There are also plenty of connecting flight options via other Chinese cities (Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, etc.).

The city's historical foundation is truly awe-inspiring. Since ancient times, these lands have been known as "Tianfu Zhi Guo"—which translates to "Land of Abundance" or "Heavenly Abode"—thanks to their incredible fertility, mild climate, and wealth of natural resources. As you explore the sights of Chengdu, it’s easy to see how its thousand-year history seamlessly weaves into the facades of modern skyscrapers and the vibrant rhythm of this high-tech capital.

What to Prepare for a Trip to China?

  • Visa & Entry Tips Malaysians transiting through China to a third country can usually apply for a 24-hour or 240-hour visa-free transit; in addition, a 30-day visa-free period has been implemented between China and Malaysia. Learn more about China Arrival Card to land in China easily.
  • Getting Connected VPNs are vital for accessing Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, etc in China. Set one up before arriving. China eSIMs are the easiest option for data and bypassing restrictions.
  • Money Exchange & Tax Refunds Exchange money in China banks (better rates than airports). ATMs accept foreign cards, but notify your bank first. For tax refunds, spend over ¥500 at stores with a "Tax-Free" sign. Keep receipts and get forms stamped at customs before departure.

Weather and conditions description

Autumn

September – November

Great

The perfect time. Comfortable temperatures, clear skies, and very little rain. The pandas are at their most active in this cool weather.

Spring

March – May

Great

A wonderful choice. It's warm, and nature is in full bloom. It's perfect for long walks and trips to the mountains.

Summer

June – August

Average

Not for everyone. It's very hot, stuffy, and humid. The rainy season is starting, which can make trips out of town a bit difficult.

Winter

December – February

❌

Since Sichuan is a basin, there is almost no wind here in winter, which causes smog to accumulate and linger for a long time. In addition, daylight hours are short in winter, so it is not recommended to visit Chengdu during this period.

Popular Chengdu attractions: the pulse of the city center

Below are the absolute must-sees that draw millions of tourists here. All these locations are primarily within the city limits and are easily accessible by public transport. However, be mentally prepared for the fact that it will always be crowded here.

Wuhou Shrine and Jinli Street

One of the most popular spots to soak up the spirit of old China, sample some street food, and pick up souvenirs.

This is the perfect starting point for diving into the Three Kingdoms era. Wuhou Shrine impresses with its austere, classical architecture, ancient cypresses, and famous red walls framed by curved bamboo stalks—the perfect backdrop for cinematic photos. Just outside the shrine walls begins the Jinli pedestrian street. It's best to come here closer to evening, when hundreds of red paper lanterns light up and the air fills with the aromas of street food.

Jinli Street is located right next to Wuhou Temple—these two spots are often visited together, as they perfectly complement each other in spirit and atmosphere. You'll need a ticket to enter Wuhou Temple: 50 yuan for a full-price ticket, and 25 yuan for a concession ticket (for students and seniors). Please note: it's highly recommended to book your tickets in advance via the museum's official website or WeChat account (the system requires real-name registration, tickets go on sale 14 days in advance, and you can book for up to 8 people per account per day).

Jinli Street

What you'll find here:

Plenty of shops filled with souvenirs and crafts — from traditional Sichuan opera masks to bamboo goods.

Chengdu street food — spicy snacks, rice sweets, fried tofu, skewers, and the famous dandan noodles.

Tea houses and cafes — where you can sip aromatic tea and watch street life go by.

Night lights — the street is especially beautiful in the evening when the red lanterns light up and traditional music fills the air.

How to get there

Take a direct subway ride on Line 10 to Wuhou Shrine station. The station opened on September 17, 2025, as part of the third phase of Line 10, making the journey to the shrine especially convenient.

People's Park and the Wide and Narrow Alleys (Kuanzhai)

To understand the true soul of the locals, you must head to People's Park. Here, in old-fashioned teahouses, city residents gather to play mahjong, sip jasmine tea from traditional gaiwan cups, and enjoy a famous local service—professional ear cleaning with specialized metal tools.

After relaxing in the park, it's worth taking a stroll to the Wide and Narrow Alleys (Kuanzhai), where restored Qing Dynasty architecture sits side-by-side with trendy boutiques and upscale restaurants. Kuanzhai Alley in Chengdu (also known as "Wide and Narrow Alleys" or "Kuanzhai Xiangzi") is a historic pedestrian district consisting of three parallel streets: Kuan Xiangzi, Zhai Xiangzi, and Jing Xiangzi, along with a cluster of traditional Siheyuan courtyards.

People's Park of Chengdu

What to see and try

Cuisine and street food — a variety of local Sichuan snacks (dan dan noodles, “chuan chuan xiang” — hot skewers, small plates).

Tea houses — you can sit in traditional tea houses, sip some tea, and soak up the cultural atmosphere.

Various shows, such as the "face-changing" Sichuan opera, are sometimes included in tea ceremonies.

Craft shops and souvenirs — bamboo goods, silk products, decorative items, and traditional handicrafts.

Photos of old Chengdu / exhibitions — walls featuring historical photographs, graphics, photo exhibits, and information about days gone by.

How to get there

Take the metro, line 2 or 17, and get off at People's Park station.

Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding

The main attractions of Chengdu are unthinkable without China's fluffy symbols. This base is the closest spot to the city center where you can observe the lives of pandas of all ages, from pink newborns to lazy adults crunching on bamboo. The base's operating hours are seasonal: during the summer season (March–October), it opens at 7:30 AM, and in the winter (November–February), at 8:00 AM. You need to arrive right at opening time, while the animals are active and haven't yet gone to sleep in their air-conditioned enclosures.

Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding

How to get there

Take Metro Line 3 to Junqu General Hospital station. From the metro exit, you'll still have about 2 kilometers to go to reach the base entrance. Instead of tiring yourself out with a walk along the highway, we recommend grabbing a taxi or hopping on bus #409 right at Exit B—thanks to a route optimization, the bus now departs directly from the metro exit. The final stop is the base's West Gate.

Museums: where to find history

When choosing cultural attractions in Chengdu, travelers often find themselves deciding between two major exhibition complexes.

Chengdu Museum

Criterion

Chengdu Museum

Sichuan Museum

Location and transport

Perfect. Right on Tianfu Square, at the intersection of metro lines 1 and 2.

A little off the beaten path, not far from Huanhuaxi Park.

Exhibition

Incredibly rich and interactive. From ancient masks to shadow theater and the city's modern history.

Focus on art, painting, Buddhist statues, and calligraphy.

Recommendation

An absolute must-visit for your first introduction to the city.

A fantastic option for true connoisseurs of niche art.

Dujiangyan Irrigation System and Mount Qingcheng

These are more remote, yet truly magnificent locations. Dujiangyan is an engineering marvel of the world—a functioning hydraulic system built over two thousand years ago without a single dam. Mount Qingcheng is the cradle of Chinese Taoism. On a clear day, these spots offer breathtaking views of snow-capped peaks. It is the very embodiment of the famous line by the great poet Du Fu: "The window frames the eternal snows of the Western Mountains."

Dujiangyan
Mount Qingcheng

Mount Qingcheng is divided into two parts. The Front Mountain (Qianshan) is teeming with Taoist temples, cultural relics, and crowds of pilgrims. The Back Mountain (Houshan) is a paradise for lovers of wild nature, waterfalls, and long mountain treks—plus, the entrance ticket here is cheaper. An important tip: before you start your ascent, be sure to stop by a nearby mini-mart to stock up on plenty of drinking water and high-calorie snacks.

Since the climb takes a colossal amount of physical energy, it is highly recommended to book accommodation and stay here for one night to recover, enjoying the fresh mountain air before heading back to the bustling metropolis.

How to get there

High-speed trains depart from Chengdu East or Chengdu South railway stations. However, the most convenient and highly recommended option is to depart from Xipu Station, which is the terminal stop of Metro Line 2. Trains from Xipu to Dujiangyan run much more frequently. Once you reach Dujiangyan, you can get to the foot of Mount Qingcheng by local train, city bus, modern tram, or special direct tourist shuttles.

Hidden Gems of Chengdu: When You Want to Escape the Crowds

The Sichuan capital is a huge, densely populated metropolis and a very popular tourist destination. If your visit falls on a weekend or a national holiday, the central streets turn into an endless stream of people. In that case, it's worth shifting your focus to alternative Chengdu attractions that are just as beautiful. (And yes, you won't miss out on the pandas).

Huanhuaxi Park and Du Fu Thatched Cottage

A vast, peaceful green oasis right within the city limits. The Thatched Cottage is the place where the greatest Chinese poet of the Tang Dynasty lived and created his works. The site is striking with its lush bamboo groves, elegant bridges, and the atmosphere of ancient intellectual life.

Du Fu Thatched Cottage Museum

How to get there

The most convenient way to get there is via Metro Line 13 (Du Fu Thatched Cottage Station). The first phase of Line 13 opened on December 16, 2025, and includes this station, which is designed with a "Holy Land of Poetry" theme—so the route is completely up to date.

Guihu Park and Baoguang Monastery

A unique ensemble that is often overlooked by foreign tourists. In summer, Guihu Park transforms into a sea of blooming lotuses. It was these very picturesque landscapes that served as the backdrop for filming the iconic series based on the novel "Dream of the Red Chamber." The neighboring Baoguang Monastery houses hundreds of mysterious arhat statues.

Guihu

How to get there:

Take Metro Line 3 to Machao West Road or Zhonglou station (the latter is more convenient for Baoguang Monastery — a taxi from there to the gate will cost just the base fare). From the metro exit, you'll need to walk for about 20 minutes or take a cheap taxi. Also, tourist bus XL01 runs from Machao West Road station, connecting Baoguang Monastery, Guihu Park, and the Sanxingdui Museum.

Panda Valley or the Dujiangyan Panda Base

If the huge crowds at the main base are intimidating, feel free to plan a trip to these two locations instead. Both are located in the Dujiangyan area and pair perfectly with a visit to the irrigation system and Mount Qingcheng.

Panda Valley

Iconic Chengdu attractions in neighboring regions

The city is an ideal logistics hub. After exploring all the attractions within Chengdu, be sure to set aside a couple of days for trips outside the city. These locations are administratively in other districts, but getting to them is easy.

Sanxingdui Museum (Sanxingdui)

A place that completely flips your understanding of world history. Here, you'll find artifacts from the mysterious Shu civilization on display: giant bronze masks with bulging eyes, golden scepters, and incredible bronze trees. This culture vanished suddenly, leaving behind a multitude of unsolved mysteries that many still attribute to extraterrestrial intervention.

Sanxingdui Museum

How to get there

The most convenient way is to take the direct tourist bus (Scenic Area Direct Bus, Route No. 1), which departs right from the city center (the stop by IFS at Section 2, Hongxing Road, Chunxi Road area). A one-way ticket costs just 25 yuan, and you can buy it on the spot. Operating hours from Chunxi Road: 7:00–16:00.

Leshan Giant Buddha and Mount Emei

These two magnificent locations are situated in the Leshan City district.

The Buddha statue, carved directly into the red cliff above the confluence of three turbulent rivers, is breathtaking in its cyclopean scale—71 meters high. Mount Emei is one of China's four sacred Buddhist mountains, famous for its wild macaques and mystical mists.

Where to find attractions in Chengdu

There are direct high-speed trains from Chengdu to Emeishan Station, with the main departure point being Chengdu East, and the travel time is about 1–1.5 hours. However, the ideal route looks a bit different: first, take a high-speed train to the center of Leshan to see the Buddha and definitely go on a gastronomic tour. Leshan is the unofficial culinary capital of Sichuan. Fans of spicy food absolutely cannot miss the local Bobo chicken skewers and sweet-skinned duck.

After a hearty lunch, you can head to the foot of Mount Emei. We highly recommend taking the tourist bus (~2 hours) to the Leidongping area, booking accommodation there for the night, and then, early in the morning before dawn, hiking to Jieyin Hall to catch the cable car—just a 3–5 minute ride and you'll be at the Golden Summit. Watching the sunrise over a sea of clouds at an altitude of over 3,000 meters will be the most powerful experience of your entire trip.
