Loved this place!! The host was so lovely and held conversation with us even with our broken Japanese haha, gave us maps / guides for the Dewa Sanzan and even asked us about our itinerary for the next day (as we were going to climb the other 2 mountains, he made sure we knew the bus timings). It was such a nice traditional ryokan, with comfy tatami, public ofuro (hot steaming bath that felt great after climbing Hagurosan), yukata, and even tea powder and biscuits set out in the room :”) Our room had a wash basin and sofa chairs as well, but not sure if that's for all rooms. We paid 660yen each for breakfast taken away (2 big onigiri balls!) but couldn't have dinner added on (so make sure you check beforehand, because most places in the town close by 5pm). Overall 100% recommend staying here! Loved our stay, thank you :)

山形駅から数分で着きました。アクセス抜群なのに安いんです。便利です。 朝食の申込締切りは前日夜の8時まで、880円です。朝食は朝7時から8時までで、受付と同じ3階です。 フロントは親切です。宿泊後に予約サイトを通じてメールをメッセージをいただきました。営業努力を感じました。

Best experience I could get from this place was the owner being a great cook and exceptional with her conversations and mannerisms in sending and welcoming her customers. Location is wonderful too, as it is quiet yet not far from the main areas to eat and transit in Yamagata. Honestly 1 of a hidden gem. Only drawback would probably be the hot tub as she is handling it on her own and if there are multiple people living there that night, it can get a little dirty, so I'll keep to using the showers would do. Love the place so much!

とにかく安い！入り口のあの場末感がめちゃくちゃ良い！こうでなくちゃ！最高！お部屋も綺麗でした！！！ タバコくさいって評判も全然気にならなかったですよ！ 周りにお店沢山あるし、この立地にしてこのお値段は良かったです。 一人旅で安く済ませようと思ったら最強！ 気楽に素泊まりできた！！！

Stayed for a night without having any of the hotel meals so will only comment on what I experienced. The hotel is situated in a very small town and it was decent considering Shinjo not being a rather popular destination compared to other parts of Yamagata. Free parking and the double room we stayed in was very huge for Japanese standards. Some facilities were old but still clean. WIFI was quite unstable though and some websites took very long to load. Staff at the reception were friendly and check in check out went smooth. There is practically nothing around the area so be prepared to go there with food if your meals are not included, and if you dont have a car. There is only a visible drug store walkable from the hotel, and I think a family mart convenience store some minutes away. We walked to a big supermarket, which was about 15 minutes walk from the hotel along the river.

The minor problem is that the door lock is very difficult to be unlocked. There is instruction to turn counter clockwise but it looks like sometimes work sometimes don’t work. Otherwise excellent.

My friends and I booked this hotel on the strength of the good reviews given here. However, regrettably, our experience at this hotel ended on a very bad note. On the day when we checked out from this hotel, my friends told the staff at the reception thst they would go down to tokyo for a short trip before returning to Zao, and asked whether it would be alright for them to keep some of their luggages at the hotel just for a couple of days. The reception staff said Okay. Then fast foward a few days, when my friends went to collect their luggages upon returning to Zao from their trip, this Japanese old lady, who we understand to be the owner of the hotel, suddenly insisted that my friends must PAY to stay at the hotel for one more night before she would give them back the luggages. My friends were shocked and tried to reason with her but to no avail. It was not until my friends threatened to call the police that this Japanese lady finally and reluctantly backed down. In fact, during our stay at the hotel, this same Jap lady also, without giving any proper explanation, told us that we could not use the dryer at the hotel. In the midst of that aforementioned saga, two of the hotel staff (who are much friendlier than the Jap lady i.e. their boss) approched my friends to try to defuse the situation. At one point during their conversation, my friends said to the staff ” she [i.e. the Jap lady] must be a bad boss]. That two staff grinned and did not disagree.

出羽三山巡りにあたって利用させて頂きました。当方ノープランの急な旅だった為、予約無しで伺いましたが、ご主人が快く受け入れて下さりました（宿坊では予約が無いと厳しいと断られました）。下調べが浅かったため、今回は羽黒山のみの参拝となりましたが、三山を巡ったような体験が出来る博物館を紹介してくださったり、次回の旅の参考になる情報を教えてもらいました。建物についてですが、昔ながらの旅館といった感じでとても味があって◎です。はじめて来たはずの所なのに、こんなに「居心地が良いな」と感じた事を不思議に思います。また、他の方も書かれていますが、広い旅館にも関わらず隅々まで清掃が行き届いており、「清潔感」がありました。キレイな喫煙ルームもあるので喫煙者も安心です。お料理についてですが、「すべてにおいて平均点を上回ってくる」洗練された味がしました。旅館の料理といえば大抵１つ２つはクセのあるお品が出されるイメージがありますが、ここは日本人なら誰が食べても「美味しい」と感じると思います。特に茄子の天ぷらは絶品でした（衣はサクサクっとした仕上がりで、中身は口の中で「ジュワァ～」ととろけます）。全体として、ご主人や女将さんの優しさを感じられるとても良い旅館です。こういう旅館はいつまでも日本にあり続けてほしいなと思いました（文句なしの星５です！）。
