The good: very friendly and accommodating staff, central to sightseeing, cute animals in the lobby, local townhouse vibe The average: dated rooms with comfortable beds but uncomfortable antique accoutrements, a 10-15 minute walk to the nearest metro (but rental bikes are never far away), no desk to work at in the room but there was a table in the common area I could use (if you have to work while here) The bad: the sewage smell in the bathroom mentioned in other reviews was present during my stay too - I'm used to encountering it, but you never expect for it to be at your hotel. Fridge in my room was plugged in and generated heat on the outside, but no cold on the inside (in the hotel's defense, I didn't ask for them to fix it, I just worked around it).

Love this cosy little hotel! There’s no elevator but the staff very kindly brought our luggages up to the third floor! The room was small yet included everything we needed & the bedding/pillows were fantastic! Location was close enough to the main city sights, yet tucked away in a quiet lane to let us have a good night’s rest. There’s also a very cute dog here!! Will 100% stay here again in future! Thank you for the wonderful stay.

Love this hotel and location. Step outside the door is the city bus (no. 1). It's great to get around when the weather is hot. Everything is so local and plenty to eat. There is a fruit shop and a very good price. Housekeeping daily and friendly. Staff are very helpful and able to speak English. Night boat trip is a must. So beautiful and only cost yuan168

HHan - JunThe hotel is new and very clean. The front desk staff are friendly and always willing to help, even though I’m a foreign traveler. The location is truly excellent. The hotel is right in the Pingjiang Road area—one of the most beautiful and famous ancient streets in Suzhou. Just step outside and you can enjoy a relaxing walk along the canals, admire traditional houses, and explore charming cafés and small local shops. It’s also about 3 km from Shantang Road, around a 15-minute taxi ride. At night, the area lights up beautifully, creating a very charming atmosphere.

GGuest UserI booked Hanyuan because it is within walking distance to my folks home. And my grandma used to work at Nanjing Agricultural University, which the hotel is affiliated with. I read others’ reviews and knew it is an old facility. I did not have unrealistic expectations. We arrived late at night. Taxi driver dropped us off at the side entrance that has numerous stairs to the door. We had lots of luggage. As we got out of the cab, we saw some staff member in the lobby looking out. Instead of coming out to help us, he walked away. My husband, myself and our seven year old all carried/dragged multiple items up the stairs to get into the hotel lobby. We checked in and decided that we would need to add a bed for the kid. House keeping came quickly to set up the bed but was reluctant to provide pillows for the additional bed. I had to repeatedly ask before they agreed to bring an extra pillow. Don’t understand why there is such resistance to equip the additional bed with pillow- after all, we did pay for the additional bed. Everything else was pretty good during our first three-day-stay. We then went away to visit families elsewhere for a week before coming back to this hotel. This time, our car drove onto the ramp at the front entrance. As soon as we entered the building, lobby manager came to offer us help. He helped us deliver luggage to our room. We are very appreciative of his assistance. We ran into some issues at the front desk this time. They asked for our passports again and took our pictures for a second time. When I mentioned that we were just here a week ago and all information was taken already, we were told that all information has been erased as we checked out. When we checked in/out the first time, we informed front desk that we were making the hotel our base camp and will be coming in and out a few times. It’s strange that they would delete our information and redo everything all over again. Again we need to add a bed. House keeping brought a roller bed which has a stained mattress pad. I asked them to bring a clean one, they said they could not. They said they didn’t have any clean pads. They said the only option is to remove the pad and put the sheets directly on the mattress. They further suggested that since the sheet is clean, dirty pad doesn’t matter and that every mattress pad under bed sheets has urine stains. His words made my stomach turn but I was too tired to fight so they went ahead put sheets on top of the mattress pad that has a big yellow stain. Again I asked for pillows for the additional bed, they refused at first, upon my insistence, they agreed to bring pillows. They also took out a blanket from the cabinets under television and put it on the bed. When the seven year old was ready for bed, I opened the blanket and realized it’s cover is dirty. It’s dusty and has multiple stings of hair on it. I called house keeping, a lady quickly bought over a clean duvet cover for the blanket but refused to take away the dirty one. She insisted that we keep the dirty duvet in the closet. I did not understand her rationale but there isn’t anything I can do. So that dirty duvet cover stayed in the closet. Maybe I should not have come back to this hotel.

It seems like the door to the candy room is a little broken! Not so easy to close! Then the electric cars in the park require money to use but they are too slow! And the cost is a bit high! The service attitude at the front desk is very good! Very eager to help! The road to the swimming pool is not easy to walk! Must be very careful! It's easy to fall! The locker room environment needs cleaning! The interior of the room is clean and acceptable!

GGuest UserThe hotel is located in the old location of Suzhou so the surrounding areas are all full of cultural experiences. The location is ideal for visiting several gardens such as The Couple's Retreat Garden, Lion Grove Garden, and Humble Administrator's Garden (all within walking distance). However, it is a bit difficult to reach by car, as you would have to cross a small bridge and go over slightly rough roads (not ideal for multiple luggage, especially large ones). The hotel breakfast is soup noodles, with 8 different options, and it comes with a dessert (mung bean cake, a local specialty). It does get a bit tiring and repetitive once you eat it for a long time though. But, there are plenty of other alternative options up and down the street the hotel is located in. Various food stalls, restaurants, and even bakeries are all located within walking distance. The hotel also provides a ticketed experience to a local activity known as 评弹, a type of operatic singing famous for its soothing sound and tendency to invoke sleepiness. The hotel rooms are neat and kept clean with no odor. Throughout the hotel, a pleasing scent was smelled and it seems that one could buy the same scent from one of the various stalls open on the street. The bathroom amenities include: hair dryer, bath robes, toothbrushes, a vanity set, razor, and a comb (along with another item that slipped my mind). The toilet is automated and has a heated seat. Unfortunately, the showers are a bit difficult to use (low water pressure and difficulty in setting temperature). There are three settings for the shower: overhead, handheld, and spout. The rooms that we ordered (two single beds) included a sitting room furnished with a rocking chair and a mini fridge (drinks inside have to be paid for). The water bottles placed outside the fridge and the snacks on the table are complimentary and free of charge. The hotel also has a laundry machine that both washes and dries the clothes. Sadly, it doesn't properly dry clothes if more than 1.5 sets of clothing are placed inside. Drying racks and clothing hangers are provided for such scenarios. Laundry baskets were also provided. The hotel does not have elevators, given the antiquity of the neighborhood, so heavy luggage and suitcases have to be carried by hand up the stairs. The hotel staff were friendly and extremely helpful with anything we needed. We had a total of 8 suitcases (5 checked and 3 carry-ons) and the staff (overnight as we checked in at around 12 AM) voluntarily led us to the room and helped carry our bags up. When we ran into a problem with the laundry machine, the staff helped clear up the misunderstanding. Attached are photos of the lobby (picture of the table with the tea sets), the hotel room that was booked (the other room looked the same, just mirrored placement), the sitting room, and complimentary food that was provided.

HHuanxiziyoufeixiangThe location is incredibly convenient. Nanchang Temple is right outside, and you can take a leisurely stroll along the water's edge all the way to Nanchang Street, enjoy some delicious food, and then bike back to the hotel. It was my first time in Wuxi, and the beauty of the Jiangnan water town, its architecture, and gardens are truly nourishing for the soul.

GGuest UserFeels like home, super cozy! My stay here was incredibly satisfying! From the moment I walked in, I could feel the hotel's attention to detail; the facilities were complete and brand new. What impressed me most was the quality of sleep – the blackout curtains were excellent, and the bedding was so soft and comfortable, truly allowing for a 'good night's sleep as soon as you lie down.' There was plenty of hot water, and the toiletries were high-quality, showing that attention to detail really makes a difference. I'll definitely recommend this place to any friends visiting the area in the future.

LlschungDuring our recent stay at this wonderful hotel, we were exceptionally satisfied with every aspect of our experience. From the moment we arrived, we were greeted warmly by the hotel staff who came out to meet us at the scenic area entrance and assisted with our luggage. This level of service set the tone for our entire visit. The hotel's décor is stunning, creating a serene and visually pleasing environment. Our room was spacious and beautifully appointed, providing a restful haven where we enjoyed a comfortable night's sleep. It truly is a fantastic place to relax and unwind. One of the highlights of our stay was the delightful afternoon tea, particularly the grain snacks which were so delicious that we requested the hotel staff to help purchase and courier some to Shanghai for us to bring home. Their willingness to accommodate our request added a special touch to our experience. Breakfast at the hotel was another standout. The porridge, in particular, was so delectable that the hotel kindly gave us a pack of the rice used to prepare it. This gesture was much appreciated and spoke volumes about their commitment to guest satisfaction. Overall, our stay at this hotel was nothing short of exceptional. We wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone seeking a comfortable and pleasant retreat. If we return to this area, we will undoubtedly choose to stay here again.

GGuest Usernice big rooms which is hard to find in Nanjing. the front desk service is great they respond to your request immediately. breakfast is good, especially the noodles and wanton is delicious. Just outside the hotel there is a McDonalds and many convenience stores and also restaurants. lots of parking spaces. the bed and the pillow are very comfortable, they change the bedsheets regularly. the negative side, the sound proofing is very bad can hear people talking from another room but they provide free ear plugs, the hygiene needs to improve a lot, the first room I had have a very strong urine smell coming from the toilet but they changed my room but the next room the shower drain was not cleaned and the bathroom was clogged. i informed the front desk and they informed the house cleaning immediately but the house cleaner did nothing and i have a flooded bathroom for 2 days, this was only sorted out when i told the house cleaner myself when i saw her, disappointed with the house keeper as she told me just remove the drain cap instead of her to clean the clogged drain. the floors is also not cleaned as it’s very dirty. was cleaned only after the 6th day of my stay. supposed to be non smoking hotel but still people smoke in the rooms. there is free washing machine and dryer but the dryer takes 2 hours to dry and still will not dry completely, the washer takes 48 minutes to wash cloths and there is only 2 washing machine and 2 dryer. lucky I stayed during the off seasons so not many people. overall stay is good. for the hygiene I would suggest the management to check on the hygiene of the rooms regularly which very important . 房间宽敞舒适，这在南京很难得。前台服务很棒，能迅速响应你的请求。早餐不错，尤其是面条和馄饨，味道鲜美。酒店外面就有麦当劳、便利店和餐厅。停车位也很多。床和枕头都很舒服，床单也定期更换。不足之处在于隔音效果很差，能听到隔壁房间的谈话，不过酒店提供免费耳塞。卫生状况亟待改善，我入住的第一个房间厕所里散发着浓烈的尿骚味，虽然酒店给我换了房间，但第二个房间的淋浴地漏没有清理干净，浴室堵塞了。我向前台反映了情况，他们立即通知了清洁人员，但清洁人员却什么也没做，导致我的浴室被水淹了两天。直到我亲自见到清洁人员并说明了情况，她才解决了问题。我对这位清洁人员很失望，她竟然只是让我把地漏盖拧下来，而不是自己清理堵塞的地漏。地板也很脏，没有打扫。直到我入住的第六天才打扫房间。酒店号称禁烟，但还是有人在房间里抽烟。酒店提供免费的洗衣机和烘干机，但烘干机要两个小时才能烘干，而且衣服也干不了；洗衣机洗衣服要48分钟，而且只有两台洗衣机和两台烘干机。幸好我是在淡季入住的，所以人不多。总体来说，入住体验还不错。关于卫生问题，我建议酒店管理层定期检查房间卫生，这一点非常重要。

The hotel itself is incredibly new, and the cleanliness really stands out – the rooms are spotless, which made for a very comfortable and reassuring stay. The smart home system throughout the hotel is a major highlight. Being able to control the lights, curtains, and AC with just my voice was incredibly convenient and added a cool tech-savvy touch. I also have to commend the laundry room; not only is it well-equipped, but the service was exceptionally thoughtful. The staff proactively guided me on how to use the machines and even helped dry and fold my clothes before delivering them back to my room. This was such a thoughtful gesture for travelers. The location is fantastic, right near Shantang Street, making it super convenient for sightseeing. If you're looking for a small yet charming hotel that's clean, smart, and offers a warm, personal touch, Shantang Houju is definitely the right choice.
