I had a great experience at MCB! This hostel is greatly located- a 3 minute walk from the sky bus station (which is exactly what you want coming from a flight!) and in the CBD. When I arrived I was really tired and wanted a nap straight away. My room wasn't ready as I was earlier than the check in time but the receptionist made sure to notify me as soon as the room was ready which I really appreciated. The staff were very friendly and welcoming. They offer free breakfast 07:00-11:00 I believe? I appreciated this every day. My room was clean and so were the facilities. I would definitely stay here again and recommend it!

I booked to stay with City Lifestyle with booking.com On booking it said to call the property if you were to be checking in late. I emailed them to let them know on booking, then called twice. No one answered or replied to my email. I then got to the property late at night after a flight hoping for the best. However when I got there, there were no instructions for what to do. The door was locked to the building and the hostel was on a different floor. I called the number on the door, someone did answer and said to wait for someone to let me in. After convincing someone, she did let me in, however she was on a different floor so I then had to wait for someone to actually let me onto the right level. This took quite a long time and was quite stressful. Once I finally got to the reception floor, I requested to get the keys out of the lockbox, however the man on the phone demanded a $100 deposit over the phone. I had paid in full prior to arriving and this was no where to be found on the website - I explained that I did not have a card capable of doing so, so in the morning I could pay him in cash or with my Eftpos card. He said no, that I could get cash out now. It was about 10:30pm, and if I were to get cash out it would have required me to again leave the building and try get back in. Plus - if he wasn't there, where the heck was I going to leave the cash anyway? I explained to him that I had given notice that I was going to be late and no one had gotten back to me, so if we could please just let me in my room and we can sort it out in the morning. The man refused, so I said well I guess I can't stay here because if I leave, I can't get back in. He was extremely rude about the entire situation and told me to talk with Booking.com as I requested a refund. So far, I have called Booking.com multiple times and no one has been able to get me an answer, with City Lifestyle labelling me in their system as a ”no show” therefore I'm ineligible for a refund. It's utter nonsense and lead to me being alone late at night in Melbourne with no where to stay.

This is an ideal location in the heart of Melbourne city and walking distance to Southern Cross Station as well as having a tram stop on the front door. The staff were really helpful and friendly too and the rooms were fairly clean. My only complaint was the out of service shower on our floor. We only had 2 stalls in the men’s bathroom and with one shower out of service for the duration of our 3 day stay it was inconvenient at times.

The location is great and the staff we met on check-in were lovely. We found parking in the side street which was handy for checking in and out but be mindful of the two hour limits. We booked 4 rooms in total and I stayed two nights. Unfortunately the pub accommodation isn't soundproofed so expect deafening noise Friday and Saturday nights until after midnight. The shared bathroom facilities were let down by lack of regular cleaning, pink mould and no temperature regulation in the shower. Expect cold or hot shower... no in-between. The pillows in the rooms were more like strangled socks in a pillow case and the mattress needs a topper as the springs poke into your back. There's nowhere to hang wet towels in your room and if you get hot you'll have to open a window and put on the desk fan. For $70 a night in Gertrude Street in Prahran it's super affordable... especially during the period of the Australian Open. If you're not fussy about where you sleep or shower and are planning a late night downstairs at the pub, this is your place! Better than a Bali backpackers.

There are some positives to this hostel such as the fact that you have privacy curtains which is honestly the only reason I stayed this long, why more hostels don't install this simple but deal breaking detail I don't know. The rooftop is a good thing to have in summer months and it is a fairly sociable hostel. On the downside the hostel is constantly cold due to their insistence on blasting air con on full all year round even in the peak of winter. It makes for an uncomfortable experience and as guests are forbidden from touching the air con dials with signs saying to speak to reception (who will momentarily change it for perhaps 30 mins before that cold gust of air comes back on). It is good to have separate bathrooms not just one private one for the room, or a communal set of showers like others, here you have a bunch of separate shower rooms with their own door. Unfortunately they often smell foul due to the drains. I didn't experience much of the free breakfast as the window is very early and doesn't work for those who work late. All in all a fairly average experience that could be easily made better with a bit of common sense.

I had a nice stay at this hotel over the Australian Open weekend at the end of January, using after-hours check-in. Circumstances: two women staying in a twin room Cons This place is not accessible for anyone with mobility needs. If you aren't happy to climb multiple flights of stairs, this is not the hotel for you. There is no air conditioning or screens on your windows. You can use a fan or risk being woken at a ridiculous hour of the morning if you open the soundproofed windows. The stall showers have minimal light, natural or otherwise. There are four self-contained bathrooms with toilets, two per level, that are well-lit and I recommend you consider using instead. The website says they have a carpark. They do not. However, there's decent weekend parking rates literally next door in public parking if you drive in after 5pm on a Friday (perhaps not so recommended if you plan to drive in on a weekday). Pros The communal bathrooms were cleaned at least four times over the 36 hour period I was there. There were no signs of mold or significant disrepair in the building (parts were old but nothing was falling apart). The room itself was also quite clean. The staff were friendly and accommodating for reasonable requests (eg. an additional key when a friend joined my twin room after booking). My check-in was well-managed and easy to deal with, despite it being after hours. You have a little fridge and drying racks in your room and at the very top of the building there is a laundry, kitchen and clothes line with a little eating area. The stairs to reach this point (which are the emergency exit stairs, by the way), look infrequently used but are stable. It's quite a hike, though. My room faced the outside of the building but some rooms appear to face the inner courtyard. For the sake of having fresh air (there's not much wind on the inside of the very tall courtyard walls), I recommend asking for one of the external wall rooms. The room also comes with a block-out blind. We were visiting for evening events and it felt safe to travel down that part of Little Collins Street late at night. Final comments I recommend the hotel and would go back there for short stays.

This building was cute.  There wasn’t any hairdryer. Beds weren’t fixed and it annoyed me. The exit light from the window was too bright at night.
